Former Florida governor and first-term Senator Rick Scott announced Wednesday that he is gunning to replace Mitch McConnell as Senate Republican leader after trying and failing to do so following the 2022 midterm election.
“I believe that our voters want us to use this leadership election to make a choice to upend the status quo in Washington,” Scott wrote in a letter to his Republican colleagues, the Wall Street Journal reported. “If you also believe this to be true and want a leader dedicated to that principle, I would be honored...

House Speaker Mike Johnson made headlines on Tuesday when he attended former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York. In doing so, he became the highest-ranking Republican official to offer support to Trump and endorse his criticisms of the U.S. justice system.
Johnson is the most recent GOP figure to visit the courtroom as he faces accusations that he falsified business records to conceal hush money payments directed to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. Alongside Trump at the courthouse were Gov. Doug Burgum (R-North Dakota), who has been mentioned as a potential running mate for Trump in the 2024 election, as well as Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Florida.) and Rep. Cory Mills (R-Florida.).
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), another potential vice presidential candidate, along with Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) and Rick Scott (R-Florida), had previously appeared at the trial to show their support for Trump.

Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to his criminal hush-money trial as a “witch hunt” and a “show trial,” and if the former president wanted to make a spectacle of the court’s proceeding, he now has quite the supporting cast.
In the last several days of courtroom drama, Trump has been accompanied by an entourage of prominent Republican lawmakers eager to be seen offering their public support to the indicted former president. Not only is their presence an act of theatrical solidarity, they have been acting as mouthpieces for Trump,...

If you’re a Republican politician looking to score points with Donald Trump, there’s a decent chance you’ve been spotted recently in or outside Manhattan Criminal Court. Standing outside Donald Trump’s criminal trial, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) suggested he, like Trump, was the victim of unfair political persecution — pointing to the Justice Department’s inquiry into his hospital chain, which paid $1.7 billion to resolve Medicare fraud charges.
“I’m fed up,” Scott said Thursday. “I watched what happened to me and my company. I’ve talked to businesspeople over the years [about] what’s happened to them, when you have political persecution. And now what I’ve watched with [former] President Trump with all these cases. This is...

Stunning video of the incident has circulated online, and search-and-rescue procedures are currently underway. “This is an unthinkable tragedy,” Baltimore’s Democratic mayor, Brandon Scott, said at a press conference. “We have to first and foremost pray for all of those who are impacted, those families, pray for our first responders and thank them.”

Swatting incidents seem to be on the rise this season.
A week after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Gerogia) and her family found themselves in swatting incidents, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows (D) is having her own experience.
She posted a statement on Facebook to inform others that she and her husband, Brandon, are safe.
“Many of you have asked if Brandon and I are safe,” Bellows wrote. “We are away for the holiday weekend. We were not home yesterday when threats escalated, and our home address was posted online. It was a good thing because our home was swatted last night.”
Swatting is the term used when authorities are prank-called to a certain address in an effort to have a team of police officers gather there.
On Friday night, Maine State Police said a call was made by a man who claimed that he had broken into an Augusta home.

In a post on X Thursday afternoon, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) disclosed that her two daughters were victims of swatting.
Swatting refers to the act of making false emergency claims that trigger an extensive response from law enforcement agencies, typically targeted at public figures’ residences.
Greene wrote, “Both my daughter’s houses just got swatted today. Big thanks to the police who responded! We appreciate you and support you!”
Greene added, “Whoever is doing this, you are going to get caught and it won’t be funny to you anymore,” before she tagged the FBI account.
This incident shortly follows Greene’s own swatting encounter.
I was just swatted.
This is like the 8th time.
On Christmas with my family here.
My local police are the Greatest and shouldn’t have to deal with this.

On Wednesday, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Florida) revealed that his residence in Naples was targeted in a “swatting” incident Wednesday night.
In a post on X, Scott condemned the act and expressed gratitude towards law enforcement agencies for their response.
“Last night, while at dinner with my wife, cowards ‘swatted’ my home in Naples. These criminals wasted the time & resources of our law enforcement in a sick attempt to terrorize my family.”
Swatting refers to the act of falsely reporting a crime or emergency to authorities in order to prompt a police response at a specific location.
Lt. Bryan McGinn, spokesperson for the Naples Police Department, confirmed that the department received a call about a shooting on its non-emergency line, but upon investigation, it was determined to be a swatting event. The incident is currently under active investigation.

Enrique Tarrio — the capo of the Proud Boys on Jan. 6 — has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for his part in the seditious conspiracy to block the peaceful transfer of power to President Joe Biden following the 2020 election. Tarrio’s two-decade sentence — the stiffest yet for a Jan. 6 defendant — was handed down Tuesday afternoon in a packed Washington, D.C., courtroom.
Tarrio’s prison term tops that delivered to Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the Oath Keepers, who received 18 years for leading that militia’s seditious conspiracy plot on Jan.

World No. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic’s vaccination status appears to again be causing him to miss a significant tournament, possibly two. Organizers of the Atp Indian Wells Masters event, which begins this week in California, confirmed his withdrawal late Sunday.
Djokovic, who is unable to enter the U.S. because he is not vaccinated against Covid, had petitioned authorities for special dispensation, but was evidently unsuccessful in his bid. He will be replaced in the field by Nikoloz Basilashvili.

The veneer of bipartisan civility didn’t last long tonight at Joe Biden’s second State of the Union address – – and that was all right with the president and Democrats.
Less than an hour into Biden’s speech before members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, it all turned into a screaming match after Potus accused some Republicans of wanting “Medicare and Social Security to sunset.” To a cascade of boos, and as the government faces a potential debt default, the Democrat added: ”I’m not saying it’s a majority. Anybody who doubts it, contact my office — I’ll give you a copy of the proposal.”

Updated: Joe Biden’s State of the Union included a number of gestures to Republicans, promotion of the spirit of bipartisanship and mention of a whole host of issues that garner backing from both parties.
But there were plenty of outbursts among the GOP, signaling how unlikely it probably is that this Congress will see major legislation on immigration and certainly gun violence. Republicans heckled when Biden attacked his predecessor for driving up the deficit, and some did even when the president mentioned a proposal to restrict non-compete agreements. At another point, when Biden talked of the fentanyl crisis, one Republican shouted, “It’s your fault!”

Republican lawmakers have rushed to the defense of far-right TV network Newsmax after the channel was dropped by AT&T’s DirecTV. According to the satellite television provider, the split stemmed from a carriage fee dispute that would have resulted in “significantly higher costs” and increased customer fees. New York, Dec 4 (Ians) After more than a year of intense political tangling, the US Senate has passed a bill that lifts the existing per-country cap on the number of employment based permanent-residency permits or 'Green Cards' issued to legal immigrants, potentially paving the way for Indians waiting in decades-long lines to breathe easier.
But there's a catch. Several, actually. It's the Senate vs House lawmakers versioning problem.
Aparna Bhatnagar, an Indian living in Stamford, Connecticut who's been in the "queue forever" places the developments in context.
"This version has to reconcile with the previous version that the House passed. It's still a long way to go and by that time the new ruling party will take over. Let's wait and watch," she told Ians.
The "previous version" that Bhatnagar refers to is the 'Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act' which passed the House of Representatives in 2019 in a 365 to 65 vote.

This week, Iggy Pop called for Florida Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott to co-sponsor the Big Cat Public Safety Act, proposed legislation that would protect tigers and other big cat species from animal abuse.
If passed, the bill would prohibit private ownership, direct public contact and dangerous interactions with big cats such as “cub petting,” a common practice at for-profit zoos and animal sanctuaries. The recent release of Netflix’s Tiger King, which depicts and condemns such practices, helped bolster support for the Big Cat Public Safety Act; it...

Nearly two weeks after the midterm elections, there are some final results from Florida’s Senate and governor’s races. After a hand recount, Republican Rick Scott maintained his lead by a narrow 10,000 votes, and his Democratic opponent, Senator Bill Nelson, will hold a press conference Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. to announce his concession.
Before making a public announcement, though, Nelson called his opponent. “I just spoke with Senator Bill Nelson, who graciously conceded, and I thanked him for his years of public service,” Scott said Sunday.

President Donald Trump started off the Sunday morning Twitter attack quietly, touting his interview appearance with Chris Wallace on Fox. Twice.
The Commander-in-Tweet initially sent out a blast as a heads-up. He later dialed in the time slots for those anxiously awaiting word and not near a handy reference. The segment will air twice today, allowing Twitter Trump followers no excuses for missing the interview.
Later, the President got in a little dig at one of his main Democratic rivals, Adam Schiff, and found time to talk about the “caravan” that is mounting at the border.
Interestingly, Wallace went after the President for his stances on the media.
The “Fox News Sunday” host chided Trump for calling the media “the enemy of the American people.”
“Barack Obama whined about Fox News all the time but he never said we were the enemy of the people,” Wallace said.
Trump wouldn’t back down.

Democrat Andrew Gillum posted a live video on Facebook Saturday afternoon in which he congratulated Republican Ron DeSantis for winning the Florida governorship and vowed to remain active.
Gillum initially conceded to DeSantis on election night, but retracted that when it appeared that a recount was in order in the tight race. The recount by machine showed DeSantis leading Gillum by more than 30,000 votes, an insurmountable lead.
Gillum, who received heavy celebrity support in his campaign, remains as Tallahassee mayor, and noted, “the fight for Florida continues,” but did not specify his next moves. His second concession speech was conciliatory, unlike that of fellow Democrat and Georgia governor candidate Stacey Abrams, who ended her campaign on Friday with a blistering diatribe claiming voter suppression as a possible reason for her loss in that election.

Back in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump Monday morning tweeted in defense of his weekend trip to Paris to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War II.
In a few short days, Trump wimped out of honoring fallen U.S. troops on Saturday because it was raining, showed up late to other events, tweeted insults at California wildfire victims, skipped the Paris Peace Forum to fly home, and got torched by French President Emmanuel Macron in a speech.
Trump also put on his Latin American Dictator hat for a minute, tweet- demanding an end to the Florida elections recounts. He declared Republicans Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis the winners in their races for Senate and Governor, claiming “large numbers of new ballots showed up out of nowhere, and many ballots are missing or forged.”
“An honest vote count is no longer possible-ballots massively infected. Must go with Election Night!

Florida Governor Rick Scott appeared to have won his race to replace incumbent Bill Nelson in the U.S. Senate. He gave a big victory speech on Tuesday night. President Trump even called to congratulate him. But Nelson knew not to concede. The race was close, there were still votes to be counted and, in Florida, an automatic recount is triggered if the margin of victory is half a percentage point or less. As provisional, absentee and otherwise unaccounted for votes have been tallied over the past few days, the race...

Washington — The Florida gubernatorial race isn’t over yet. On Thursday afternoon, Democrat Andrew Gillum, who conceded defeat on Tuesday night, narrowed the margin between his vote tally and that ofRepublican Ron DeSantis. As of this writing, the discrepancy sits at just over 38,000 votes out of 8.2 million cast, giving Gillum 49.15 percent of the vote to DeSantis’ 49.62 percent, according the state’s elections division.
An automatic machine recount is automatically triggered under Florida law if the margin between two candidates’ share of the vote is with 0.5 percent. If the current vote tally stands or narrows further,...

Tallahassee — At 10:50 p.m. Tuesday night outside Lee Hall on Florida A&M University’s campus, Democrat Andrew Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, stepped to the microphone. Florida’s first-ever black nominee for governor gave a gracious, hopeful concession speech to a devoted group of supporters after it became apparent that Republican former Congressman Ron DeSantis would become Florida’s 46th governor by a narrow margin.

Update, with video “Many races not been called yet, but with 100% of Fox News reporting, Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives!” Stephen Colbert said at the top of his live midterm elections night Late Show, giving viewers the good news first.
His Ed Sullivan Theater audience erupted happily.
“Sweet!” Colbert beamed, forecasting the House will now open an investigation into the President “and finally find out if Donald Trump has ever done anything unethical.”
“Everything after this is just gravy,” Colbert beamed. “Democrats have taken control of half of one of three branches of the government. All the Gop has is the other half of Congress, the Supreme Court and the President who does whatever he wants.”
Apparently voters responded more to Democrats call to fix health care than Trump’s core message, “Latinos are coming to hit you in the face with rocks,” Colbert explained.

Pete Davidson has garnered some criticism after insulting a conservative politician who lost an eye during his military service on Saturday’s episode of “SNL.”
Davidson’s segment on Weekend Update kicked off with his first impressions of several midterms candidates, though he didn’t claim to be an expert on the races.
“After I had to move back in with my mom, I started paying attention to them,” he said, likely alluding to his recent split from Ariana Grande. “I realized there are some really gross people running for office this year.”
He went through Rick Scott and Peter King before arriving at Dan Crenshaw. Crenshaw, a former Navy Seal, is running for a House seat in Texas.
“This guy’s kind of cool,” he said over laughter from himself and Weekend Update co-host Michael Che. “You may be surprised to hear he’s a congressional candidate from Texas...

Fresh off two massive Make America Great Again rallies, the endlessly energetic President Donald Trump heads to Montana and Florida today for yet more gatherings.
As Tuesday’s midterm elections loom, President Trump is mounting a furious, coast-to-coast effort to turn out the Republican vote, as conflicting polls indicate a race that can swing either way for House of Representatives seats. Today it’s Montana and Florida, following on the heels of yesterday’s Indiana and West Virginia rallies, a pace that is typically more suggestive of the final stages of a presidential campaign.
But as energetic as he is offline, the Commander-in-Tweet hasn’t forgotten his online audience, and found time today for a few broadsides and some kudos to favored friends.
Here is his Saturday morning tweetstorm so far, with more likely to come later in the day:
….Lake Okeechobee and all of the hurricane money were a passion for Rick Scott,...

President Trump wants Tuesday’s midterm elections to be about immigration. The idea of criminal brown people invading the United States is abstract enough for him to propagandize the issue to no end. An issue like health care is not, but that hasn’t stopped the president from claiming the Gop will safeguard protections for pre-existing conditions. “Republicans will totally protect people with Pre-Existing Conditions, Democrats will not! Vote Republican,” he tweeted last week. “Republicans will protect people with pre-existing conditions far better than the Dems!” he wrote on Wednesday.

The fate of Florida’s film industry, decimated two years ago by the elimination of the state’s film incentives program, might hang on the outcome of next week’s gubernatorial contest. It’s a tight race, and whoever wins – Democrat Andrew Gillum or Republican Ron DeSantis – will have to deal with a Republican-dominated Legislature that’s adamantly opposed to film incentives. But industry sources in the Sunshine State clearly are pinning their hopes on Gillum, who has declared, “When I’m governor, we’re going to bring film tax credits back.”
DeSantis, meanwhile, largely has remained mum on the issue. Last month, without quoting him directly, the Tampa Bay Times noted that when he was asked between campaign stops if he supports tax incentives to recruit businesses to Florida, including tax breaks for producers making movies in the state, he responded with a nebulous, “Maybe, but it depends on the situation.

On Friday night’s episode of “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert opened his monologue by pummeling Donald Trump and the rest of the Republicans for trying to act like they haven’t spent years trying to repeal Obamacare and ensure that health insurance providers didn’t have to provide coverage for pre-existing conditions.
“Polls indicate that health care is the number one issue for voters. That shows how hopeful Americans are. Donald Trump is president, and they still want to live,” Colbert quipped. “Good for you. Good for you.
“Americans like certain aspects of Obamacare a lot. A recent poll showed a full 90 percent of people said it was either somewhat or very important that the law protect people with pre-existing conditions. 90 percent! It’s been a busy week for President Trump, much of it filled with massive Make America Great Again rallies.
Tonight, he heads out once again, this time back to Nevada in support of Republican Sen. Dean Heller, who is in a pitched battle against Democrat Jacky Rosen, or “Wacky Jacky,” as she’s nicknamed by the president.
The rally is set for Elko, Nevada, and marks the second Nevada rally in two months for Trump, who appeared in Las Vegas in September. The Commander-in-Tweets is clearly in campaign mode, as earlier today he gave shout-outs to a handful of favorite candidates.
Deadline will cover the rally later today. For now, here is today’s tweetstorm so far:

Marc Burstein has been covering elections since 1998. Now the ABC News executive is gearing up for what he believes will be an event of seismic proportions.

Of all the Trump acolytes running for office this November, few are more loyal to the president than Ron DeSantis. The former congressman from Florida now vying to be the state’s governor has based nearly his entire campaign around his allegiance to Trump, so much so that he forgot to actually put a platform together. He even released a bizarre campaign ad in which he preached the president’s values to his toddler children while describing himself as a “pitbull Trump defender.” Trump offered his wholehearted endorsement, and DeSantis won the Republican primary handily.
