It’s an unlikely trio, but Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), Hana (Ally Maki), and Nat (Mary Holland) are so much fun in The Big Door Prize Season 2, and no more so than in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the May 8 episode. In “Night Under the Stars,” the three have a night out at the casino and adopt new personas for the occasion—or rather, some of them do, at least. Cass is doing well, but not when it comes to maintaining her persona. Yes, she has a daughter, she says. “Do you have a problem with that?” she asks the casino worker. “Just because Britt parties hearty, honey, doesn’t mean that she can’t have her own baby girls. I mean, I have so many baby girls. In fact, I can’t even keep track. I’ve got a baby girl in every port.” Hana tells her, “I...

Based on what I can gather about her new film, At the Sea, Amy Adams needs a pair of sandals and a stiff drink. Adams is teaming up with Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber – the director and writer of Pieces of a Woman and White God – for a new drama about rejuvenation and adjusting to a life you had not planned to live.
According to Deadline, At the Sea finds Adams’s Laura returning to her family at their holiday beach house after a long rehabilitation. Once there, Laura must readjust to her new lot in life, still haunted by aspects she tried to leave behind. Staring down the barrel of a new chapter of her life, Laura must cope without her fame, fortune, and, of all things, her identity.
Adams, a six-time Academy Award-nominated actress, recently wrapped production on the sci-fi drama Klara and the Sun, which Taika Waititi directs.

The residents of Deerfield are moving on to the “next stage” with the mysterious Morpho machine, which appeared in the town and told them their “potentials,” in The Big Door Prize Season 2 (premiering with the first three episodes on April 24 on Apple TV+). But are they ready? “No, I don’t think he’s really ready for any of it. He’s just being dragged along by a current of madness, so he’s trying to react and swim gamely to the side and catching on to whatever crossing log might bring him to safety,” Chris O’Dowd (who plays Dusty) tells TV Insider. “So I don’t know if he’s ready, but he’s willing, I suppose.” On the other hand, Giorgio is “definitely ready,” according to Josh Segarra. “He’s always been ready, and now he finally has somebody to accept his ready. It’s been a year and a half since Nightbitch, a project that has been described as being a darkly comic “neo-horror” movie, went into production with Amy Adams (American Hustle) in the lead role, and now we finally have an update to share: Searchlight Pictures has announced that they will be giving the film a theatrical release on December 6, 2024. This is an upgrade in the release plans, as Nightbitch was originally meant to be released through the Hulu streaming service.
Written and directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Nightbitch is based on a novel by Rachel Yoder. The film will tell the story of a suburban mom thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler. As she embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a dog.
Adams plays that possibly canine housewife.

Kristen Stewart, star of Love Lies Bleeding, wasn’t too happy with 2020’s Happiest Season, which is widely deemed the first lesbian Christmas rom-com produced by an eminent Hollywood studio. With openly out Clea DuVall as its director and Stewart as a starring talent attached to it, the outing was deemed a benchmark in the history of mainstream queer Hollywood films.

Some film festivals take themselves entirely too seriously. Not South by Southwest, the Austin-based multidisciplinary mega-event where amped-up crowds welcome comedies with open arms — the raunchier the better. This year, one logline stood out as especially promising: “A 30-year-old Indian American virgin gets a job teaching high school Sex Ed.” Alas, “Doin’ It” doesn’t cut it (it’s basically 2014 Haley Joel Osment comedy “Sex Ed” with a cultural spin). The concept is funny, but the execution feels forced, in part because the substitute in question (played by Lilly Singh) is supposed to be following an abstinence-based curriculum. In theory, her deep-seated celibacy should make her perfect for the job.
The movie aims to combat the shame around all aspects of human sexuality, which seems like an admirable but inevitably controversial goal. But “Doin’ It” goes too far straight out of the gate, opening with an embarrassment no teenager can...

Sex is a lot like filmmaking. You dive in when you’re ready, trust your companions, and learn from experience. Few people start out as experts, but there’s beauty in being allowed to try and fail in different environments over the years.
In her first feature film lead, comedian and former late night host Lilly Singh plays Maya, a computer engineer who takes a part-time job teaching sex education. After an incident in her teens led to her mother moving them back to India, Maya not only repressed her sexuality but grew to actively fear it — and now she’s teaching teens about sex despite having never done it herself. Singh, Neel Patel, and director Sara Zandieh co-wrote the film, which premiered at SXSW on March 12.
Sonia Dhillon Tully plays Maya’s hyperconservative single mother Veena, a role that has unfortunately been tread and retread in the South Asian-American film ouevre.

After teenage Maya is caught in a sexually compromising position, her mom moves the family back to India so Maya can learn proper discipline. Years later, she returns to the US to find funding for her teen-focused app, and gets a job as a substitute high school teacher so she can research her target demo. But when the principal assigns her to teach sex ed, Maya — who’s still a virgin— sets out on a quest with her best friend to make up for the high school experience she lost out on.

Plot: When Tommy Walcott is invited into a limo by famous actor Andy Samberg, his dull life takes a thrilling turn. Tommy is offered a chance to win a million dollars in a dark web reality TV show, where assassins from all over the world attempt to kill him for 30 days. The catch? He can’t be killed if he’s not entirely alone, leading him to recruit an unlikely team to help him survive.
Review: Jake Johnson is hilarious. After his breakout role as Nick Miller on Fox sitcom New Girl, Johnson has appeared alongside Tom Cruise in The Mummy, Chris Pratt in the Jurassic World franchise, and voicing Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. While Johnson has written several films, including Digging for Fire, Win It All, and Ride the Eagle, he makes his directorial debut with the new film Self Reliance.

The Sony animated films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have both received immense praise from audiences and critics. The last film ended on a cliffhanger and promised an epic conclusion to the trilogy, but Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which was supposed to come out this March, was delayed a few months ago. Phil Lord and Chris Miller explained that they delayed the film in order to maintain the same high-quality bar they set with the other movies. Although Lord and Miller are hard at work on the third film, Jake Johnson, who voices Peter Parker, says he’s yet to start recording dialogue for the film, making it seem as though the delay will be longer than expected.

He’s a man crying out for someone to inject some intrigue into his life, and one day that cry is answered. By Andy Samberg.

A third season of Starz’s period erotic comedy Minx isn’t likely in the cards, according to co-ep and star Jake Johnson.
In a recent Zoom chat with Deadline, the actor shared that he hasn’t heard anything about a final decision. “But by evidence of me cutting my hair short,” he said, “I don’t [expect a renewal].”
“I think the move to Starz, I think HBO kind of doing their HBO thing, or HBO Max, whatever it’s called now, I think that was brutal for [the show],” Johnson reflected. “Then, I think the strike coming out right as we were trying to promote it…My guess is you can’t beat something up that many times and keep going.”
Johnson called the hampering of the show’s success, simply as a result of the turbulent Hollywood moment in which it debuted, “unfortunate,” given his feeling that “there was a lot to that show.

From Searchlight Pictures, Amy Adams is set to star in hot horror project Nightbitch, and this month the upcoming film has received its official “R” rating from the MPA.

The “darkly comic horror film” is being directed by Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), and we’ve heard that it’s planned to be a Hulu Original release.
Scoot McNairy (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Mary Holland (Happiest Season) also star.

The movie is based on Rachel Yoder’s novel, and Yoder penned the screenplay.

What better way to beat the summer heat than with a long, pitch-black comedy from one of Hollywood’s indie superstars? If you, like a lot of people, missed this week’s streaming pick when it was in theaters, now is your chance to rectify that.
The contender to watch this week: “Beau Is Afraid“
The latest from A24 prince Ari Aster is too out-there to register with Oscar voters, even though it boasts an impressively literary screenplay and stunning production design. Aster’s three-hour Homeric freakout starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man-child journeying home for his mother’s funeral is the artiest and most divisive of his movies thus far, but it’s well worth the VOD price tag to hitch your own ride on this rambling odyssey. Beware penis monsters and Patti LuPone‘s wrath.
Other contenders:
“Chevalier”: Kelvin Harrison Jr. is going to get an Oscar nomination one of these days.

On paper, the concept of Maggie Moore(s), which premiered this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, is incredibly fascinating: a darkly comedic murder mystery about a bumbling police chief (Jon Hamm) and his wisecracking deputy (Nick Mohammed) trying to solve the mystery involving the deaths of two women who have the same name and were killed around the same time. Add in the fact that it is loosely based on a true story, and you have all the proper ingredients to make the next Coen Brothers masterpiece, and it seems like the film’s director, John Slattery, thought so as well as he takes the Coen Brothers influence and runs with it. I just wished that he ran in a different direction though because the end result is a tonally dissonant, poorly shot and overall underwhelming film.

It is always an occasion for celebration when Jon Hamm and Tina Fey are back together on screen — big or small — having shared credits on various 30 Rock and SNL episodes (and the upcoming film version of Fey’s Mean Girls). But their latest collaboration is a clear departure, as well as a rare chance to see Fey out of her comedic zone.

There are actors who direct films, and there are those who establish themselves as real-deal filmmakers. In the first category we find John Slattery, a fine actor who, after a respectable career as “that guy,” reached a new level at age 45 thanks to Mad Men. The AMC series was still on the air when Slattery directed his first film, God’s Pocket, in 2014, and he returns now, nearly 10 years on, with the dark comedy Maggie Moore(s). Following his on-screen reunion with Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm in last year’s Confess, Fletch, Slattery here casts the actor in the lead role as Jordan Sanders, a lonely police chief investigating the connection between the murders of two women, each named Maggie Moore.

Apple TV+”s The Big Door Prize comes armed with a deceptively simple elevator pitch. Based on a book of the same name by M.O. Walsh, this 10 episode series ponders “if a nondescript machine in a corner store promised to tell you your ultimate destiny, would you want to know it?”
At first, you might be thinking “sure, why not?” That concept is not markedly different from what a psychic or boardwalk fortune teller might guarantee. And in the case of the butterfly-branded “Morpho machine,” receiving your reading would actually be far cheaper at only $2. It’s all just fun and games, now who has four quarters?
But what if seemingly everyone in your small American town who utilized the Morpho machine appeared to be fundamentally changed by the experience? What if dozens of your peers completely rearranged the details of their lives to better fit its ultimate vision for them?...

Written, produced, directed by and starring Jake Johnson, Self Reliance follows Tommy (Jake Johnson), a man accomplishing nothing else in life except to exist, and attempts to spice up his life lead to some near-death encounters. Along with Johnson, the film stars Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales and Emily Hampshire.
Tommy is a lonely man coasting through life because he’s afraid to confront his failures, and hides behind his mom (who he lives with). While walking home from work one day he meets Andy Samberg, who invites the wayward man into his limo for a ride to a mysterious location. The actor tells Tommy that he’s been selected to participate in something, but Samberg can’t recall any other details. Once they arrive at the destination (an old abandoned warehouse of some sort), Tommy walks through a red door to a desk where two men sit, waiting to explain what he’s gotten into.

Jake Johnson describes his new film “Self Reliance,” which he wrote and directed, as “‘Jacob’s Ladder’ with some laughs.” The film is a comedy with real stakes: Johnson stars as a man who winds up in a game where he’s trying to win a million dollars while hunters try to kill him. The twist is he discovers that the hunters can only attack him when he’s alone. But when none of his friends or family believe the game is real, Johnson’s character must figure out how to survive on his own.
There are scary moments, but more often it’s also really funny. And the audience screening it on Saturday night at the South by Southwest festival in Austin rocked the Paramount Theatre with big laughs throughout the film’s tight 85 minutes.
“I love ‘Jacob’s Ladder.’ I love it so much. I do get some laughs,” Johnson said after the screening.

There are movies made during the pandemic, and movies made because the pandemic, and though debuting director Jake Johnson had been kicking around the idea for “Self Reliance” for years, it took Covid to motivate him to make it. Why? Because the “New Girl” actor’s absurdist concept — about a sad-sack bored enough with his life that he agrees to risk it in a “Most Dangerous Game”-style reality show — assumed both profundity and relevance as soon as the species went into lockdown. Coming up for connection, Johnson delivers a silly and frequently surprising why-we-need-people parable that leans on laughs in lieu of peril.
The helmer plays Tommy, who’s been a passive bystander in his own life for as long as he can remember, until one day famous dude Andy Samberg (also among the film’s producers) randomly pulls up in a stretch limo and offers Tommy a ride.
