Great 3D dance moves, an attractive cast and the South Beach backdrop make Step Up Revolution a fun addition to the franchise Of all the movie genres embracing 3D technology, action, animation, horror, it’s dance that truly captures its razzle-dazzle potential. The veteran filmmaker Wim Wenders transforms 3D dance into film art via his recent documentary Pina. First-time feature director Scott Speer mixes a familiar, teen-friendly story of unexpected romance, a disapproving father, and friendship rivalry with a surprising shot of political activism and the sexy backdrop of Miami for the entertaining Step Up Revolution, the fourth film in the satisfying and steady Step Up franchise. Dance competition series like So You Think You Can Dance are as popular as ever but none of the TV dance shows compares to the super sized pop and 3D excitement of Step Up Revolution. Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Perry White in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. White is the old-school newsman who runs The Daily Planet. Fishburne is the first black person in any iteration of Superman that has held a position at The Daily Planet. Wait? What? Actually, strike that: The L.A. Times says he's the first black person in any role in the Superman universe, film, cartoon, or television, although the commenters here have been quick to refute that.
I think he's an excellent choice, not just because he's a good actor, but because he's bad-ass enough that, when Warner Brothers comes in and fires Zack Snyder before filming begins, Fishburne can help scoot him out the door. (La Times)
Speaking of Zack Snyder, when Warners does fire him (and they will, and if we're lucky, they'll bring in Nicolas Winding Refn to replace him and exploit the...

"Step Up 3D," the third installment in the franchise, grossed $160 million worldwide on just a $30 million budget, surpassing the previous two films. This is why it should come as no surprise that Disney is developing a fourth installment, called "Step Up 4Ever." Now comes word from choreographer Stacey Tookey that "So You Think You Can Dance" competitor Kathryn McCormick has joined the cast as the female lead. Producer Adam Shankman ("Hairspray" director), who is often a judge on the show, confirmed the news, stating: "Kathryn isn.t just in 'Step Up 4,' she's the female lead. Her audition was fantastic. A star is born." "Step Up 4Ever" is planned for 2012 and has music video director Scott Speer attached to direct from a script by newcomer Jenny Mayer.

Scott Speer has signed on to direct Step Up 4 for Summit Entertainment. Just like the third film, Step Up 4 will be done in 3D. The new film is set to take place in Miami. Speer replaces Wade Robson, who dropped the project for personal reasons that would have kept him from making the planned summer start date. Jenny Mayer is writing the script for the film that is being produced by Offspring Entertainment's Jennifer Gibgot and Adam Shankman, along with Summit's Patrick Wachsberger and Erik Feig. The last two films were directed by Jon Chu, who will serve as executive producer. Speer is best known for directing music videos and commercials. He helmed videos for Jordin Sparks, Will.I.Am, Jason Derulo and Orianthi Lacey. He also collaborated with Chu on the TV episodes The Lxd: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers.

If you've been missing sweet dance moves on the big screen complete with a weak story to tie what is essentially a batch of music videos together, then I have some good news for you. Deadline reports Summit Entertainment has hired Scott Speer, a music video and commercial director, to helm Step Up 4Ever, the fourth installment in the dance series. Originally choreographer Wade Robson was going to direct the feature, but personal reasons kept him from meeting the summer start date. The script (as if it matters) comes from new writer Jenny Mayer, but it's not clear what cheesy romance or struggles will lie between the plentiful dance sequences. And since the third installment Step Up 3D worked out so well in the third dimension, this new film will also be shot in 3D. I suppose if you take these films for the extended music videos they really are,...
