Variety hosted its inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast on June 5 in Los Angeles. The event included insightful conversations with Indigenous and Native creators, talent, and industry executives such as “Reservation Dogs” showrunner Sterlin Harjo, Bird Runningwater from “Fancy Dance,” Kali Reis from “True Detective” (who was joined by co-star Isabella Star Lablanc and showrunner Issa López) and many more. The program highlighted Indigenous storytelling and the achievements of Indigenous communities in film and TV and even included a surprise message from director James Cameron.
The event also explored how the industry is faring in creating opportunities for Indigenous talent on and off-screen. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Indigenous Native Americans becoming U.S. citizens, as President Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act in 1924, inspired by the high rate of American Indian enlistment during World War I.

When California State University Northridge’s head of film production Nate Thomas came to visit one of his first students, Paul Hunter, on the set of the new David Oyelowo-starring Apple TV Plus series “Government Cheese,” the Northridge alum and show co-creator could be heard boasting about his time in the program.
After learning to tell stories at Csun, Hunter spun a renowned career directing music videos for Beyonce and U2, among others, into helming Bacardi spots with Michael B. Jordan and Cannes Golden Lion-winning campaigns for Nike. Much of that has been through PrettyBird, a Hollywood commercial house he co-founded and uses in part to help foster and launch the careers of other underrepresented voices. “It all started at Northridge,” Thomas says. “We do filmmaking not just for the privileged. We make it for all people who have a story to tell.”

Lane Factor spent most of his teen years on camera, growing up on FX’s “Reservation Dogs.” The hit series premiered in 2021 and comes to an end in September after three seasons. Factor plays Cheese Williams, one of the show’s four Indigenous teenagers living on the “rez” in rural Oklahoma. The Oklahoma native, who is of Creek-Seminole and Caddo descent, talked to Variety before the SAG-AFTRA strike about learning the craft, how the cast and crew helped him overcome his anxiety and working with Steven Spielberg in “The Fabelmans.”
What has the journey been like for you, getting to grow up on TV as Cheese and taking him through this final season?
It’s been so amazing. I’ve learned so much. This was my first role. I’ve learned about starting fresh with this character. But I felt so connected to Cheese because as he was growing, so was I.

Early in the third and final season of FX/Hulu’s Reservation Dogs, Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai) finds himself peering up at a glittering night sky with Maximus (Graham Greene), the conspiracy theorist who’s temporarily taken him under his wing. “In order to observe the universe, you must put your back to the future and fix your eyes on the past,” Maximus advises him. “Celestial events that occurred long ago, we still see remnants of them. The universe knows. It always knows. We are just echoes of the things that came before.”
And though Maximus is a noted kook who spends his time growing eggplants in perpetual anticipation of alien visitors, his words in that moment ring true. Reservation Dogs has always been concerned with how histories, both personal and cultural, reverberate into the present and eventually the future. Its very premiere centered on the death a year earlier of the gang’s friend Daniel,...

Tazbah Chavez, the WGA-nominated “Reservation Dogs” writer and director, grew up attending environmental justice protests that aimed to protect Indigenous lands. As a citizen of the Bishop Paiute Tribe four hours outside of Los Angeles and daughter to a climate journalist, the creative — who helmed and co-wrote Tuesday’s episode of Fox’s “Accused” — said she wanted to bring her background as an activist fighting for Native rights to the small screen.
“’Naataanii’s Story’ is emblematic, first and foremost, of the frustration and anger that a lot of young people face when we try to protect Native homelands from being contaminated by destructive industries and unwise developments, and it’s reflecting the passion of our people to see justice,” Chavez told TheWrap in an interview. “Institutions like federal, state, local, global and corporate players ignore the needs and the rights of Native families.”

Network television has no shortage of crime shows. From “CSI” to “NCIS” and “Law & Order,” procedurals have dominated the TV landscape for quite some time, with a focus on the prosecutors and cops at the center of every show.

The anthology series, which premiered on Jan. 22, features the story of a different defendant every episode, with a new director at the helm every time. New data from Illuminative, the Native women-led social justice organization, and Nielsen’s Seen on Screen case studies reveals the number of indigenous people in lead roles across TV and streaming has expanded over the past two years, but there’s still much room for growth.
The findings claim the number of indigenous lead recurring roles increased 100 between 2021 and 2022, despite overall representation of indigenous people remaining below population parity. Only 1 of shows across all platforms feature indigenous representation as a lead or recurring character.
“Visibility is power, and we as Native peoples know firsthand the importance of being seen and shown on screen in an authentic and equitable way,” said Crystal Echo Hawk, founder and executive director of IllumiNative. “We’re so grateful for the researchers at Nielsen who helped bring this data to light and reaffirm what we’ve already known – Native representation and Native-led content is good for business.

Oscar winner Keith Carradine (The Power of the Dog), Emmy nominee Jason Ritter (Raising Dion), Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad) and Wrenn Schmidt (Nope) have joined the cast of Fox’s upcoming anthology series Accused, based on the International Emmy-winning British series. The project comes from 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa and House creator/executive producer David Shore.
Developed by Gordon and co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television, Accused is based on the BBC’s BAFTA-winning crime anthology. It opens in a courtroom on the accused, with viewers knowing nothing about their crime or how they ended up on trial. Told from the defendant’s point of view through flashbacks, Accused depicts how an ordinary person gets caught up in an extraordinary situation, ultimately revealing how one wrong turn leads to another, until it’s too late to turn back.
The series premieres Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 9 p.

Accused will arrest your attention when it premieres on Fox on January 23.
Fox says the new anthology drama is a "fast-paced provocative thriller, exploring a different crime, in a different city, with an entirely original cast."
It takes the term procedural to a new level, which might resonate with broadcast TV audiences.
It's becoming increasingly difficult to launch new series on the broadcast networks, but focusing on one story a week and completely refreshing the next is not something the broadcast networks usually air.
The cast is also excellent, including Rachel Bilson, Academy Award Nominee Abigail Breslin, Emmy Winner Michael Chiklis, Whitney Cummings, Jack Davenport, Emmy Winner Margo Martindale, Emmy Nominee Molly Parker, Emmy Winner Rhea Perlman, Wendell Pierce, and Emmy Nominee Malcolm-Jamal Warner.
Fox promises there are many more big names attached to the series, so we'll need to tune in when it airs.

"Reservation Dogs" is must-see TV, the kind of series that offers so much more than what anyone could expect from its marketing. The FX series follows the titular Reservation Dogs, a crew of four Indigenous teenagers living on a reservation in rural Oklahoma, as they try to navigate growing up Native in the wake of losing their fifth member, Daniel (Dalton Cramer), to suicide. The series, created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, is equal turns hilarious and heartwarming, eye-opening and gut-busting. "Reservation Dogs" finds universal truths in its very specific viewpoints, helping viewers empathize with characters that American pop culture has all too often ignored.
One thing that "Reservation Dogs" does brilliantly is create a fully lived-in world for its characters, and the direction can change quite a bit from episode to episode based on the perspective characters. In an interview with /Film's Jack Giroux, writer, director, and executive...

When "Reservation Dogs" debuted under FX's banner on Hulu in 2021, fans couldn't say enough good things about this hilarious and emotional coming-of-age story from co-creators Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi. Viewers were ready to jump in the car with Elora (Devery Jacobs), Bear (D'Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor) as they planned to leave their Native American community in Oklahoma in favor of a new life in California.
As the show progressed through its first and second season, it became about more than these four teenagers. The scope expanded to include the eccentric yet well-meaning people around them like Officer Big and Uncle Brownie. But at the same time, the second season was sure to focus more on all of these characters as individuals to build a much richer world for them to inhabit. The season 2 episodes that put the aunties and Big in the...

Tazbah Chavez is one of the voices behind "Reservation Dogs." The writer, executive producer, and director first met the show's creator, Sterlin Harjo, when she was a teenager attending film festivals. Harjo was one of the many artists, including Taika Waititi, who responded to Chavez's writing. Almost a decade later, they're all now working together on the acclaimed FX show.
Presently, Chavez is in the writers' room for the next chapter in the series. For season 2, she directed "Decolonativization" and "Wide Net." Outside of "Reservation Dogs," Chavez directed "Your Name Isn't English" and wrote for "Resident Alien" and "Rutherford Falls." She is a a poet, as well, with a knack for atmosphere and feeling she always tries to bring to "Reservation Dogs." During a recent Zoom call, the artist talked us through writing and directing on the series, as well as what to expect from "Reservation Dogs" season 3.

Producers have to fight for a lot on behalf of everyone on their sets. They’re battling for the creative vision of the directors and writers, they’re dedicated to building sets free of harassment, abuse or Covid-19, they fight for diversity both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, and the latest challenge in a post-Roe v. Wade world involves making sure everyone has access to abortions and reproductive healthcare.
But as the panel of TheGrill’s Producers Roundtable presented by Gracenote on Wednesday explained, the fight between being inclusive and making sure people have access to reproductive healthcare are more intertwined than you might expect.
Tazbah Chavez, a producer on FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” explained that in order for her show to give opportunities and visibility to the indigenous tribes in Oklahoma, they need to film on location in a place that today does have a strict ban on abortions.

"Reservation Dogs" isn't a show that can be put in a box. There's no ceiling to the creativity. It can go to many places and explore many emotions, but actor Sarah Podemski sums it up rather well when she says co-creator Sterlin Harjo's work is a "conversation." He's making a show people not only want to watch, but also talk about, which is a hard TV series to find in a world of "content."
Harjo and all involved aren't making "content," though. They're telling stories that need to be told. One of Podemski and Harjo's previous collaborations, "Mekko," even tackles similar themes and questions found in the riveting FX series. The freshman season set a high bar, but Podemski believes season 2 surpasses it.

Schur, creator/executive producer of The Good Place, co-creator/exec producer of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Parks and Recreation and executive producer of Hacks, is one of the biggest...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “Wide Net,” Episode 5 of FX’s “Reservation Dogs” Season 2, now streaming on Hulu.
FX’s “Reservation Dogs” continues to be one of the funniest shows on TV, breaking storytelling ground with its largely Indigenous cast and crew.
It is representation that both Native Americans and non-Natives alike have been craving to see on TV — multi-dimensional roles within the Indigenous community.
This week’s episode, “Wide Net,” is written and directed by Indigenous director Tazbah Rose Chavez. It follows Sarah Podemski’s Rita, who takes a girls’ trip with Bev (Jana Schmieding), Teenie (Tamara Podemski) and Natalie (Nathalie Standingcloud) to the Indian Health Services Conference, and their attempts to snag men and bust moves at the conference dance floor.
The episode is a game-changer for audiences in terms of how it spotlights its female cast, with Schmieding calling it a celebration...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “Wide Net,” Episode 5 of FX’s “Reservation Dogs” Season 2, now streaming on Hulu.
After filming the fifth episode of “Reservation Dogs'” second season, Sarah Podemski went out and got matching Navajo floral tattoos with four of her co-stars. The quartet — who include her sister Tamara, “Rutherford Falls” star Jana Schmieding and Nathalie Standingcloud — took the lead on the episode “Wide Net,” which focuses on Podemski’s character Rita as she takes a girl’s trip with her longtime childhood friends to the Indian Health Services conference. It’s a bawdy and terrifically fun episode, but also quietly radical — the episode was written and directed by Indigenous director Tazbah Rose Chavez, and follows four Native women in their attempts to snag men and bust moves at the conference dance floor.

Sarah Podemski is a treasure.
She's also doing double duty playing two incredible characters on both the acclaimed Reservation Dogs and the nothing remotely guilty about its pleasure, Resident Alien.
Both series are returning this month, and TV Fanatic caught up with Podemski to chat about Reservation Dogs' success, what to expect from Resident Alien's Kayla in the second half of the season, and keeping the momentum going with Indigenous representation in the industry, so check it out!
Jumping right in. Hopefully, I'm not being too presumptuous here, but it feels like a much-needed surge of mainstream Indigenous representation on screen right now, which is awesome. How does it feel for you to be at the forefront of that?
Yeah, I think that's what it's proven to be.
Over the last 30 or 40 years, there have been some incredibly successful Indigenous-led projects. But it seems that we haven't been able to sustain that energy.

Right before the pandemic shut everything down, longtime friends and actors Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten met at a bar in Los Angeles. As the pair drank, “I was like ‘Kiowa, wouldn’t it be cool to work on a show together?'” Matten told IndieWire via Zoom. The pair decided to “manifest it,” taking a photo to commemorate the occasion.
That manifestation has come to pass, with the pair working together on AMC’s new murder mystery series, “Dark Winds,” focused on two Navajo detectives (Zahn McClarnon and Gordon) trying to solve a double homicide. Gordon, McClarnon, and Matten are all Hollywood veterans and see the series as more than a vehicle for a leading role; it’s a chance to let their Indigenous communities see themselves outside the frame of trauma.

Peacock has released the official trailer for Season 2 of Rutherford Falls, the comedy series from Sierra Teller Ornelas, Ed Helms and Mike Schur, ahead of its release later this month.
In the first season, we meet lifelong best friends, Nathan Rutherford (Helms) and Reagan Wells (Jana Schmieding), who find themselves at a crossroads – quite literally – when their sleepy town gets an unexpected wakeup call. After the mayor decides to move a statue of Nathan’s ancestor because car drivers keep crashing into it, Nathan embarks on a mission to keep the statue in place. That causes Reagan to juggle loyalty to her friend and to her people, the Minishonka Nation.
In Season 2, Nathan and Reagan help each other tackle work, romance, and major changes to their small town and the Native American reservation it borders, initiated by Tribal Casino C.E.O. Terry Thomas (Michael Greyeyes). Jesse Leigh and Dustin Milligan also star.

Terry Thomas (Michael Geyeyes). The acclaimed comedy continues to represent a breakthrough moment in Native representation in comedy both in front of and behind the camera as Rutherford Falls employs one of the largest Indigenous writer’s rooms on TV. Among the show’s talented Native writers are Ornelas, Schmieding, Tai Leclaire, Tazbah Chavez, Dash Turner, and Azie Dungey. (Credit: Tyler Golden/Peacock) “Rutherford Falls is back!
