Indie science fiction with a rare humanism, a scientific and emotional mystery with a solution Hollywood wouldn’t dare go anywhere near. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a big sci-fi geek
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I needed a really good science fiction flick to wipe away the couple of bad ones I’ve had to endure in the past week or so, and Continuum — aka I’ll Follow You Down in the U.S. and Canada — did the trick beautifully. This is almost the movie that Project Almanac wanted to be — kinda maybe, if it could have broken out of the cheap Hollywood trope in which FX trump emotion — an exploration of the human impact that time-travel could potentially have. There are next to no FX here, and not even any new SFnal ideas. What there is...

‘RoboCop’ 2014 movie: Full-fledged flop at domestic box office (photo: Joel Kinnaman in ‘RoboCop’ 2014) Directed by José Padilha, and starring Joel Kinnaman and Abbie Cornish, Sony Pictures’ $100 million-budgeted RoboCop 2014 remake opened with disappointing numbers on Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Things improved a bit over the weekend, but there’s no denying that RoboCop 2014 will become a major domestic box office bomb. (See also: José Padilha hates ‘RoboCop’ 2014 filmmaking process.) According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, Padilha’s remake of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 "classic" (as mentioned elsewhere on this site, just about anything made before 2003 is considered a classic these days) landed in third place this extended Presidents Day Weekend, February 14-17, trailing both Warner Bros.’ overwhelmingly well-received The Lego Movie and Sony Pictures / ScreenGems’ low-budget romantic comedy About Last Night. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street), and featuring the voices of Chris Pratt,...

RoboCop
Written by Joshua Zetumer & Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner
Directed by José Padilha
USA, 2014
Paul Verhoeven’s science-fiction films RoboCop and Total Recall take place in different environments and eras, but share a similarly raucous, ramshackle, satiric attitude. These films are products of their time, filled with garishly practical effects and grimy, tactile sets, costumes, and character designs; you could reach out and touch his visions of futuristic Detroit or Mars, even though you probably wouldn’t want to spend much time in either locale. The recent Total Recall remake from director Len Wiseman was lifeless and devoid of personality; it assembled a decent ensemble including Colin Farrell and Bryan Cranston, and proceeded to waste them entirely in a world that was intentionally fake and shiny, a green-screen facsimile. So it is faint, if not inaccurate, praise indeed to say that the RoboCop remake, which also boasts a stellar line of performers,...

We’re in a bit of a lull as far as movie releases are concerned right now, as we wait for the award season films to start rolling in. Of course, this also means we’ll start getting trailers for the movies coming out in 2014. In this week’s installment of Trailer Trashin’, I take aim at the first trailer for next year’s remake of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven masterpiece RoboCop.

Given that she spent a healthy chunk of her early career hunting down supernatural and other mysteries, we imagine Gillian Anderson will feel right at home joining the cast of Richie Mehta’s new film I’ll Follow You Down. The movie, which already features Haley Joel Osment, Rufus Sewell and Victor Garber, concerns a scientist (Sewell) who vanishes without trace during a business trip. The incident leaves his wife (Anderson) and his son shocked and saddened. But then, years later, the son (now played by Osment) and his grandfather (Garber) make a startling discovery. They invent New Coke! No, they actually just find information that points to Sewell still being among the living.Mehta wrote the script and is currently cranking the cameras in Toronto with a cast that also features Catherine Bruhier, John Paul Ruttan, Sarah Manninen and Rupinder Nagra, who starred in Mehta’s first film, Amal.

This is the Pure Movies review of This Means War, directed by McG and starring Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger, Chelsea Handler, John Paul Ruttan and Abigail Spencer. Written my Michael Holder for Pure Movies (@puremovies). Perhaps it started with George Clooney and Brad Pitt trying to out-cool each other in Ocean’s Eleven, or with the improvisation in Curb Your Enthusiasm, but there now seems a glut of films that attempt to employ quick-witted, seemingly off-the-cuff dialogue – and it’s beginning to grate. An idea has surely gone full-circle into self-parody by the time Sylvester Stallone has had a go (as he did to unintentionally hilarious effect in The Expendables).
