Ancient myths, religious otherworldliness, and culturally tailored re-imaginings of classic tropes or creatures populate the landscape of Latino horror. Although genre films have been present in Latin American cinema since the 1930s, over the last two decades — with the advent of digital filmmaking and increased government investment in the art form — they have exponentially flourished in the region.
Meanwhile, in the United States, Latinx audiences are known to be enthusiastic (and paying) fans of all things horror, even if Hollywood projects rarely include Latinos on screen. There are still few genre features by or about American Latinos out there, but up-and-coming storytellers are striving to change that. As streamers and studios vow to support emerging voices in entertainment, this is a space ripe for growth.

With Madre, writer/director Aaron Burns explores the dangers of dismissing maternal instincts with a cautionary tale that’s part psychological thriller, part body horror, and 100% unnerving to watch. It’s evident that Burns’ previous experiences within the genre world have served him well, because with Madre, he does a masterful job creating a harrowing and horrifying predicament that anyone can relate to, regardless of their parental status.
Madre centers on Diana Prieto (Daniela Ramírez), who has more than she can handle on her plate. Her son, Martin (Matías Bassi), has a severe case of autism and suffers from violent outbursts, with a tendency to hurt himself and lash out his mother, who is now pregnant with her second child. Her husband, Tomás (Cristobal Tapia Montt) travels frequently to Japan for business, which leaves Diana harried and ready to throw in the towel. One day, Martin goes into a rage at a local supermarket,...

While Madre may only be his second feature film to date, writer/director Aaron Burns is no stranger to the world of horror, or indie filmmaking for that matter. His credits include providing visual effects expertise on projects like Planet Terror, Machete, and The Green Inferno (on which he also was in charge of second unit photography and even played the character of Jonah, who was eaten by cannibals in a glorious frenzy of brutality), and he has also worked as a camera operator on Aftershock and played supporting roles in both The Stranger and Knock Knock.
While at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead caught up with Burns to talk about his disturbing take on parental paranoia. The filmmaker discussed what inspired his latest project, how he wanted to tap into the true horror of Madre’s story—rather than rely on copious amounts of gore—and the importance of trusting female instincts,...

The main narrative section of the upcoming SXSW Film Festival is getting a burst of genre edginess with writer-director Aaron Burns' Madre. The first feature to come from producer Nicolas Lopez's new Purgatorio genre label this one paints a picture of family life gone very dark, indeed, and the trailer is very promising. Diana Prieto is pregnant and taking care of her first child, Martin who has a child development problem, has become overwhelming. She has no one to help her while her husband Tomas spends months working in Asia. Diana’s at her breaking point with Martin when Luz, a gifted caregiver from the Philippines, steps in to help. Martin quickly begins improving under Luz’s supervision, but Diana’s worried that he’s only being taught to...

Caged and waiting to be eaten. Visited by the dead at nightfall. Asked to climb into the oven to clean it. The characters in The Green Inferno, Sinister 2, and The Visit are faced with horror of many forms, and while their scary situations are vastly different from one another, all of their stories can now be experienced on Blu-ray.
The Green Inferno: Hopeful for change, the student activists travel to the Amazon rainforest to save a tribe threatened by deforestation, only to be captured by the natives and placed on the menu. In The Green Inferno, Eli Roth exposes viewers to a palpable sense of primal fear, realistically placing his young cast of well-meaning characters in a horrifying “what if?” situation made all the more real by the filming location: a village deep in the jungles of Peru.

“No good deed goes unpunished.” Unless of course your good deed was waiting patiently for The Green Inferno to find distribution. I cannot tell you how excited I was to attend a screening last week and I was more than ready for possibly more gore than my stomach could handle.
In the film, Lorenza Izzo plays wide-eyed college freshman Justine, the daughter of a U.N. Ambassador and a young woman trying to find her place among international issues, protests, and hunger strikes. While roommate Kaycee (Sky Ferreira) is hip to the Bs surrounding the campus’ humanitarian group, Justine feels drawn to it. After being “shamed” at a group meeting for making a joke—shame being a common tool used among slacktivists—Justine can’t help but demand to participate in the group’s trip to the Peruvian jungle to protest the de-forestation and possible extermination of a local tribe.

Eli Roth is grabbing headlines and making crimson waves this week following the release of his unsettling, visceral and long-delayed cannibal film The Green Inferno – catch Matt Donato’s thoughts on the gruesome spectacle here – though the director also has another project that is teetering on the verge of its limited release, the Keanu Reeves-led home invasion thriller, Knock Knock.

While we're all waiting for "John Wick 2," Keanu Reeves is going down another genre road with "Knock Knock," and leading him along the way is Eli Roth. Whether or not it transcends the trappings on the surface as the aforementioned action flick remains to be seen, but even if it's half as fun, it'll be worth the watch. Lorenza Izzo, Ana de Armas, Aaron Burns, Ignacia Allamand, and Colleen Camp are along for the ride in this one that follows a family man, who has an extra-marital romp with two comely young women. But things turn from sexy to sinister when his very life is put into peril. And in the Nsfw clip, the two young ladies entice Keanu and he tries to keep up the charade of being alone at home working with this wife. After that you can check out a quick new trailer for the movie as well.

We're less than one month away from the theatrical release of Eli Roth's The Green Inferno, and Crypt TV is setting the mood with a new episode of Drug Deals that gives a whole new meaning to the munchies, as well as a game of "would you rather" that forces Brittany Furlan to choose between a number of painful scenarios.
Directed by Eli Roth from a screenplay he co-wrote with Guillermo Amoedo, The Green Inferno comes out in theaters on September 25th from Bh Tilt. The Green Inferno stars Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Sky Ferreira, Daryl Sabara, and Aaron Burns.
"How far would you go for a cause you believe in? In Eli Roth’s terrifying new film, The Green Inferno, a group of college students take their humanitarian protest from New York to the Amazon jungle only to be taken prisoner by the indigenous tribe they came to save.

Keanu Reeves is held up as one of the nicest actors in Hollywood – and that makes him the perfect fit for Eli Roth’s new domestic horror, Knock Knock.
Stepping into the fuzzy slippers of a loving father and husband, Reeves is on board to play Evan Webber, a devoted architect who stays at home one weekend to focus on his craft while his family enjoy a brief holiday without him. One night, though, Evan’s life is effectively upended when two impossibly attractive young women seek shelter in his home. Lost and without a phone signal, Reeves’ protagonist allows them into his family home, leading to a passionate affair and a series of consequences that cement Genesis (Lorenza Izzo) and Bel’s (Ana de Armas) status as bona fide femme fatales.

There’s something very traditional about Eli Roth’s recent horror output, be it the score he utilises here in Knock Knock or the fact that his last few directorial efforts seem to spend half of their running time setting up the film before the true plot kicks in and everything goes to hell in a handcart.
That’s certainly the case here.
Knock Knock starts off pretty innocently enough: architect and family man Evan (Reeves) is left home alone – to work – whilst his wife and kids head off for a weekend away. His peace and quiet is disturbed by two strangers, nubile young girls (as is the wont of many a horror film cliche, looking for a party they should be at. Only they never reach the party.

The Green Inferno Movie Images Have Been Released. Eli Roth‘s The Green Inferno (2013) is closer than ever to actually being screened for audiences, as the official release of September 25th, 2015, is just around the corner. I’m extremely excited for this film, possibly overly joyous, but everything released so far has just maintained or raised my expectations. This will be so satisfying, I can taste it in my spit.
Bh Tilt, the production company behind this, has released a pair of new movie stills from the film, and as I mentioned earlier – my interest is still high, and nothing has changed.
The story revolves around idealistic young college graduates traveling to the amazon in order to ‘do good’, ‘protect the environment’, and ‘save the rainforest’. Of course, they’re welcomed a bit differently than they anticipated, and things go horribly, terrifyingly, deliciously wrong. It’s an homage to Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Eli Roth,...

The Green Inferno Trailer 3 Has Been Released. Eli Roth‘s The Green Inferno (2015) movie trailer 3 stars Lorenza Izzo and Richard Burgi. The Green Inferno‘s plot synopsis: “A group of student activists travels to the Amazon to save the rain forest and soon discover that they are not alone, and that no good deed goes unpunished.”
There’s a new trailer for Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno, which I thought of as a clip, at first. This is now the third trailer for Roth’s latest, much anticipated exploitation movie. The film has been shelved for quite a long time now, even IMDb lists this as 2013. What we do know, officially, is that this was supposed to be released last year, but studio interference/scheduling conflicts delayed this until now. This September, we’re getting Roth’s homage to Cannibal Holocaust, with some of his critique of westernized/American superiority sprinkled in.

The Stranger comes to us as the latest vampire film to never admit it’s Actually a vampire film, because labeling yourself as a “vampire movie” just isn’t cool anymore. I’m sorry – if your character hates the sun, drinks blood and is immortal, he or she is a vampire. Deal with it.
While filmmaker Guillermo Amoedo proves to have a keen cinematic eye, this nightmarish infection thriller ends up being a big ol’ bowl of Meh. Presented by horror maestro Eli Roth, this Chilean thriller does have the atmospheric chills of a good mysterious-drifter-fueled caper, but some transitional techniques struggle to make Amoedo’s work flow seamlessly for international audiences. It’s a shame when audio dubbing reflects negatively on a cinematic watch, and while it’s something we try to ignore, one can’t help but be taken out of the fantasy on screen by voices that clearly don’t belong.

Last fall, someone killed Keanu Reeves' dog in "John Wick," and the result was a lethal path of vengeance marked by a bullet-riddled pile of bodies. But for the actor's next genre outing, he won't have a special set of skills and a cache of weapons to rely on. He'll just have to hope to outsmart two sexy, dangerous girls in Eli Roth's "Knock Knock," and a brand new trailer is here. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the movie co-stars Lorenza Izzo, Ana De Armas, Aaron Burns, Ignacia Allamand and Colleen Camp, and follows a successful man whose Father's Day romp with two women who aren't his wife, turns into a nightmare when it turns out they want much, much more. We didn't get a chance to check out the movie in Park City, but with some international dates coming up, hopefully U.S.
