Development continues on producer/director J.J. Abrams' live-action adaptation of the 'steam-punk' novel "Boilerplate: History's Mechanical Marvel":
The 170-page book, including 350 illustrations/photos, written by authors Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett follows the adventures of a 'combat robot', designed during the Victorian Age as a 'protype soldier', that meets up with notable historical figures over a 100-year time line.
In the book, the character was built by 'Professor Archibald Campion', who unveiled his creation at the 1893 'World's Columbian Exposition' in Chicago.
Designed for the self-proclaimed purpose of "...preventing the deaths of men in the conflicts of nations..." Boilerplate charges into combat during the 'Spanish-American War' and the 'Boxer Rebellion'.
Campion and his robot also circle the planet with the Us Navy, make silent movies and shmooze with the likes of Mark Twain and Nikola Tesla.

Whether Paramount Pictures wasn't pleased with some of the critical and fan reactions following Star Trek Into Darkness, or the studio is simply looking at a fresh approach to the Star Trek reboot franchise, there will be some new writers on the scene for Star Trek 3. THR has word that relatively unknown writing duo J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay haven been hired to script the film which J.J. Abrams will not direct, due to his schedule on Star Wars: Episode VII. However, they won't be alone, since Roberto Orci will work with them on the sequel. But this time Orci's writing/producing partner Alex Kurtzman isn't on board. Read on! Damon Lindelof won't be writing with the team either, but the new duo does have some ties to Abrams since they're adapting Boilerplate, the graphic novel by Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett, which Paramount and Bad Robot were...

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have been hired by Paramount and Skydance Productions to pen Star Trek 3. They will be joined by Roberto Orci (co-writer of the first two installments), although there's no sign of his writing partner Alex Kurtzman or Lost's Damon Lindelof. According to the site, "The next Star Trek film is untitled and unscheduled, but Paramount and Skydance are hoping to have a film in time for the franchise to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016." There's also no director in place as of right now, as J.J. Abrams will obviously be far too busy with Star Wars Episode VII. Attack the Block's Joe Cornish is still said to be the top choice to land the gig. Payne and McKay worked with Abrams on the script for an adaptation of Boilerplate, the graphic novel by Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett.

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.
10:00-11:00 Comic-Con How-To: Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Part One— Stories are about conflict, and there is no purer form of conflict than a good ol' fisticuffs-style brawl-or sword fight, laser battle, western shootout, or even two chicks pulling each other's hair. Just over a year ago, we told you about director J.J. Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot finally handling a project about a robot when Paramount Pictures secured the rights to the graphic novel Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel, and Deborah Newmyer of Outlaw Productions subsequently brought the project to Bad Robot.
Now, Deadline reports that Paramount and Bad Robot have hired John D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Goliath) to adapt the Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett graphic novel-picture book hybrid about the world’s first robot, who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia, journeyed to the South Pole and was involved in the silent movie business before disappearing on the battlefields of World War I.
The book tells Boilerplate’s story by inserting the character into pictures drawn in the style of the age (see below).

It seems like Boilerplate is finally making some production progress after all this time. We reported almost a year and half ago that J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot had, along with Paramount, obtained the rights to Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett‘s graphic novel Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel. Now, they’ve finally agreed on the screenwriters.
According to Deadline, Jd Payne and Patrick McKay have been hired to pen the adaptation. Relatively new to the Hollywood scene, Payne and McKay have begun to forge their screenwriting mark with Goliath, a 300-esque biblical epic set to be directed by Scott Derrickson. They’re also scribing the film adaptation of Deadliest Warrior, based on the Spike TV series, which Shawn Levy is producing for Paramount.
They sum up the story as centering on the titular robot, who “was built in the late 19th Century to replace men in battle.” The source...

It's the end of the week, you're tired, I'm tired, so let's see what casting news Hollywood has flung out in the last 20-odd hours. Emma Stone has signed onto yet another snarky romantic comedy, this one titled "He's Fuckin' Perfect." She'll play a "social media savvy girl who is pessimistic about love, and vets her friends' dates to find flaws. When that process leads her to uncover the perfect guy, she decides to use her Internet research skills to turn herself into his perfect match." Well, props to the rom-com genre for finally realizing Google and Facebooks were things people used! The film is being produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions, and was penned by McKay's assistant, Lauryn Kahn. [Deadline] Renaissance thespian Brian Cox is returning to comedy, and is joining the cast of Jay Roach's "Dog Fight" alongside Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis.

In July of last year, J.J. Abrams picked up the rights to “Boilerplate,” and now his company Bad Robot — along with Paramount Pictures, which is producing — has hired the necessary writers to take the next step forward.

They’re the same writers behind “Goliath,” a movie in the works that’s based on the story of David and Goliath that’s being compared to “300.” In addition to that, they’re working on a movie adaptation of Spike TV’s “Deadliest Warrior.”

Always one to employ up-and-comers, J.J. Abrams has hired Goliath scribes John D. Payne and Patrick McKay to pen Boilerplate an adaptation based on Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett's eponymous coffee table book/graphic novel Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel with Paramount Pictures and Abrams' own Bad Robot banner backing the production. The graphic novel tells the story of an early 20th century robot built as a kind of supersolider with the intention of replacing humans in battle and fighting in Wwi, the Spanish-American War, and the Boxer Rebellion before disappearing in WWII. It's History Steel! The original story, started as a bit of online fun, with Guinan and his wife Anina writing a detailed history of the robot's creation, intertwining it with real historical events, and even featuring archival photographs showing it with historical figures such as President Teddy Roosevelt (in reality, Boilerplate was a 12-inch model...

One of the latest trends in fiction is taking famous stories and giving them a genre twist. THR has more news about Jj Abrams newest project – good night, the man is sure busy!
J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot shingle are developing a thriller based on the teenage makeout game of snogging in the closet. Called 7 Minutes In Heaven, the original idea comes from Jack Bender, who most recently directed the final episode of ABC’s “Lost.” A longtime Bad Robot cohort, Bender signed a feature deal with the company in early June, and the “Heaven” project is his to helm. “Heaven” is being developed internally, but it likely will be set up at Paramount, the studio home of Bad Robot.
While plot details are being suppressed, it is known to focus on two teens who go into a closet as part of the titular game and find all their friends dead when they come back out. Bad Robot is looking for a writer to tackle the idea.

Meet Boilerplate, the world's first robot, whose story is now heading to the big screen.
Paramount has bought the film rights to the 2009 book Boilerplate: History's Mechanical Marvel, by Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett, reports HeatVision.
The illustrated book is a fictional tale of the first robot who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia and met author Mark Twain and scientist Nikola Tesla.
The character originally featured on a website which showed Boilerplate standing alongside historical figures in faked images. It was presented so convincingly that many visitors to the site believed the story was true.
In the robot's spoof history, it was built in the 1880s, accompanied an Antarctic expedition, became involved with silent movies and was active in the First World War before disappearing when the Lost Battalion was surrounded by German forces in France in 1918. Boilerplate...

J. J. Abrams and his company Bad Robot have picked up the rights to popular graphic novel Boilerplate and plan to start work into turning the story of the Victorian age robot into a major motion picture.

A couple of months back I was killing some time in the local bookstore and came across a remarkable piece of creative fiction presented as if the events documented really happened. Boilerplate was the name of the book and it told the story of a robot created in the late 19th century that went on to travel the globe, interact with many historical figures and even fight in the First World War. Throughout the book there were photos that looked like authentic snapshots of that era showing the Boilerplate robot standing alongside people. As a kid I loved stuff like this, and for years there didn't seem to be any more alternate history books made like this.
Seeing the creativity displayed in Boilerplate, it doesn't come as any surprise that the movie rights got snapped up for it. Ironically, it's J.J. Abrams company Bad Robot that did the snapping, giving...
