With budgets on the rise and total investments for studio pictures creeping toward the half a billion dollar mark, Hollywood needs a sure thing. So we hear terms like, “built-in audience” or “high-concept” or “ancillary revenues.” The summer movie schedule becomes a long list of sequels, prequels and remakes in the studios’ quest to recoup their investments. The success of the Transformer franchise has them scrambling. Cartoons from the 80’s are now the hot property. The studios are scouring the countryside for the next Transformers. I’m hearing names that I haven’t heard since I was eight, He-man, Thundercats, Go-Bots, Silverhawks and the Mighty Orbots. But one of the most popular cartoons from the 80’s is still out there, Voltron.
I remember the years 1984-1986 fondly as “the Voltron years.” I lived, breathed, ate and slept Voltron. I believe I was 10 when I discovered the company that owns Voltron,...

Columbia picks up 'Discontent' spec
Sony's Columbia Pictures has picked up the comedy spec script "Winter's Discontent" from scribe Paul Fruchbom.
Charles Roven and Alex Gartner will be produce for Atlas Entertainment, the film division of Mosaic Media Group. Columbia inked the deal for a low six figures.
The story follows Herb Winter, whose wife dies after 50 years of marriage. Long faithful but sexually frustrated, Winter moves with his best buddy to a retirement community, where they start living a swinging single life.
"It's rare to read a spec script with such a clear and original voice and to have it be funny ... it's the icing on the cake," Gartner said.
Sam Dickerman is overseeing for the studio. Jake Kurily is Atlas' creative executive.
The project is the latest in geriatric comedy features, following Warner Bros. success with the Jack Nicholson-Morgan Freeman starrer "The Bucket List".
"The genius of this movie is that it's going to be a hard R-rated comedy for older people -- much older people," Columbia co-president Matt Tolmach said.
