"Why are you here?" "I'm here for my fate." Whoa!! Hell yes, this is awesome. Evenveil is an incredible fantasy short film made by a company called Rainfall Films, written & directed by Sam Balcomb. A warrior in exile, bearing a fated weapon, enters the ruins of a dead city to unlock a mysterious power known as the Red Veil. It's a fantasy epic packed into 10 mins - better than most feature films released this year. "Evenveil is a proof-of-concept fantasy short from director Sam Balcomb and Rainfall Films. The conceptualization of the environments and characters began in 2020, as Rainfall started developing new techniques for world-building visual effects and implementation with live action." The short stars Alexis Peters, Aria Song, Nick Apostolina, Dawson Mullen, Gregory Lee Kenyon, & Ralph Lister. Of course, this is part of a "a larger, sprawling narrative" that they hope to develop further. I'm in!! The visual quality,...

Ahead of Horror Channel’s premiere of The Cleaning Lady on June 26th, the film’s star, writer and producer Alexis Kendra talks about playing a ‘Goddess’, coping with lockdown and why she can’t watch horror films on her own.
The Cleaning Lady is having its channel premiere on Horror Channel. Excited?
I love you guys. Always have, always will. I’m honoured.
It’s a very disturbing film, dealing with abuse, addiction and hidden rage, yet the characters are sympathetic and have real depth. It’s horror with a twisted heart. As a co-writer, alongside your director Jon Knautz, what were the main challenges in getting the balance right between acting and writing?
I compartmentalize real easy, so if I’m writing, I’m writing. If I’m acting I’m acting. I don’t really mix anything so it’s not that difficult. Keeps me in the present moment a lot.

Exploring what’s truly lurking below the surface of any person’s life or circumstances can be an equally enthralling and unnerving experience. An existence that appears to be immaculate on the surface may not be as flawless under closer examination. That’s certainly true for the seemingly successful protagonist of the new horror-thriller, ‘The Cleaning Lady,’ who’s […]

The Cleaning Lady is the latest upcoming release from director Jon Knautz (Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer). Both Knautz and central actress Alexis Kendra have worked on the previous film Goddess of Love, from 2015. Their latest collaboration involves a brutally burned and scarred woman, who struggles with life and work. Her desire for a normal life makes her turn on her beautiful employer. The film also stars: Rachel Alig (At Granny's House) and Stelio Savante (Starship Troopers 3: Marauder). As well, this title had its World Premiere, in 2018, at London's Frightfest. From Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer to The Shrine to Girl House to his latest feature, The Cleaning Lady, filmmaker Jon Knautz has always delivered an intriguing variety of genre stories. He recently celebrated the world premiere of The Cleaning Lady at the Arrow Video FrightFest UK film festival, and Daily Dead had the chance to check in with Knautz about his newest film project, with the director discussing the collaborative process with co-writer and star Alexis Kendra, the relevancy of this story to things currently happening in society, and more.
Can you talk about working on the initial short with Alexis and then the process of taking it from short form storytelling to a full-on feature film?
Jon Knautz: Alexis and I had already written the feature script for The Cleaning Lady and we wanted to shoot a small part of it to help raise financing, so that’s where the short actually came from.

From its opening moments where we watch a trapped rat get pureed to pulpy, gooey bits in a blender, it’s clear that co-writer/director Jon Knautz is not messing around with his latest feature, The Cleaning Lady, which recently enjoyed its world premiere in the UK as part of this year’s FrightFest festivities. An expanded take on his short film of the same name, Knautz consistently defies expectations with his often brutal and unforgettable tale of two very different women on a collision course that will forever change their lives in unimaginable ways. Plus, having the film’s star, Alexis Kendra, as a co-writer and a driving creative force on The Cleaning Lady truly makes all the difference here, too.

Alice, a lonely woman trying to break off a relationship with a married man, gets more than she bargained for when she enters into a self-serving friendship with her domestic help in Jon Knautz's The Cleaning Lady, part of this year's Frightfest selection. It's a film with a lot going on beneath the surface, full of sharp observations and with some nicely judged comedy alongside the horror. A few days before the première, I asked Jon how it developed.
"I’ve had the seed of this story in my head for about 15 years," he says. "I had always wanted to develop it but some other project would always end up bogging me down. About two years ago I pitched the idea to Alexis [Kendra, who co-wrote and stars as Alice] and she dug it. She started throwing in her own ideas and we ended up writing the script very.

In a genre that’s wound itself around everything from killer clowns to drippy-eyed undertakers, it seems only apt that now we find ourselves with a homicidal house cleaner. Jon Knautz’s lean, mean, Febreze-inspired thriller is a perfect study in delivering exactly what it says on the tin, for both better and worse. What starts as a surprisingly suspenseful stalker movie, with a pair of well-cast and well-written female characters at the helm, very quickly launches itself straight into the genre bargain-bin, with a third-act as generic (and disappointing) as you’d expect from such a no-frills title.
Co-written by and starring Alexis Kendra as a kind, love-addicted beautician, The Cleaning Lady builds itself up around some incredibly sturdy foundations. Kendra’s Alice befriends badly-scarred and socially-removed maintenance worker Shelly (a terrific Rachel Alig), taking her under her wing with everything from extra cleaning work, to lessons in beautification.

Jon Knautz, director of past FrightFest favourites Jack Brooks Monster Slayer and The Shrine, now invites you to feel the horrendous pain of heartbreak. Enter into a baroque vortex of madness when an emotionally unstable stripper is shattered after being dumped by her boyfriend. Brian was the love of Venus’ life and the thought of him having an affair with another woman begins her volatile descent into the dark side of psychosexual insanity. Co-writer Alexis Kendra plays Venus with startling insight in an erotic thriller that’s sexy and shocking in the super-stylish tradition of Brian De Palma and Roman Polanski.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Dalia Films Production. Tagline: "Be careful who you get close to." Director: Jon Knautz. Writers: Alexis Kendra and Jon Knautz. Cast: Alexis Kendra, Woody Naismith, Elizabeth Sandy and Monda Scott. Goddess of Love is a bit of misnomer. The film's protagonist, Venus (Alexis Kendra), is more of a black widow or a female preying mantis. She bites the heads off of those she loves, figuratively. This film, from Canadian director Jon Knautz (The Shrine), is a very fascinating look at a delusional character. She appears normal and average at first, but her mask comes off at a prominent transition point. Here, the film changes from an erotic thriller into more of a psychological one. The transition is jarring and from here on out the film is a bumpy ride. The steep ups and downs come from the protagonist, whose own perceptions cannot be trusted.

Thor: Hammer Of The Gods
Stars: Zachery Ty Bryan, Mac Brandt, Daz Crawford, Alexis Peters | Written by Steve Bevilacqua, Rafael Jordan | Directed by Todor Chapkanov
Vikings always seem to interest film makers, we’ve had the classic Kirk Douglas movie, we’ve even had the comic Erik the Viking, and we’ve had the 3D “spectacle” that was Beowulf. Now that we have moved into super hero territory with the most recent Thor film we’ll also get the smaller lower budget versions that don’t try to make Thor an alien but the God that he was in the original legends.
In Thor: Hammer of the Gods Thor is in fact a human character who along with a small group of other Vikings including his brothers invades an island looking for riches. All they find though is a group of people who are being terrorised by creatures that could...

Coverage of this year's Screamfest La Film Festival continues with Dread Central's event report for Thursday, October 20th, and Friday, October 21st, when we hit the carpet to bring you more photos and caught the premieres of Jack Heller’s feature film Enter Nowhere (Night #7) and of Ryan Schifrin’s No Rest for the Wicked, The Little Mermaid, Infected, and more. (Night #8).
(Editor's Note: In case you're wondering what happened to Night #6, the filmmakers of Livid, the major premiere of that evening, were not in attendance so we opted to give SeanD. a night off of coverage as well. Considering that he's practically been living at the Manns Chinese 6 during Screamfest La's 2011 run, we'd say he certainly deserved it!)
Those walking the black carpet on the 20th and in attendance for the seventh evening of the fest included Enter Nowhere director Heller, writers Shawn Christensen and Jason Dolan, producers Dallas Sonnier and Robert Crippen,...

See how simple that was? No police in theatres. No shutdowns. No silly controversy. Just pay for your ticket and see a movie about a swamp monster with a wireless belt sander. That's right, kids! The UK will be getting Hatchet II as it was meant to be seen when it opens there in theatres this week. Free of all the MPAA stupidity and hoopla.
According to Adam Green -- "Hatchet II has received an 18 Rating with No cuts enforced. When it opens in cinemas on Friday in the UK - you'll be getting the uncut film!"
We sure could take a page from our friends across the pond.
Below is a list courtesy of ArieScope Pictures of the first round of cinemas where UK fans can catch the film on the big screen starting April 1st. More screens will be added so check your local listings!

Here's some more Valentines Day goodness that I thought you might enjoy! This is a new short film called Damn Love, and it takes the lovable holiday down a little darker road.
The short was directed by Blake Reigle and it's a "black, and red, comedy about the lengths a shy man goes to in order to let the apple of his eye know how he truly feels about her. Horribly, his inability to look her dead in the face and communicate his feelings causes a series of unfortunate events that will keep them apart for eternity."
The short stars Ed Ackerman (Hatchet 2, Frozen), Alexis Peters (Hatchet 2, Valentine's Day), and Colton Dunn (Hatchet 2).
I hope you enjoy the video below, and remember... communication is the key to a successful relationship.

The lone survivor of the first Hatchet travels with a gypsy and a group of hunters to the same swamp where her friends and family died only to face the wraith of the exact same killer, yet again.
Pretty much a remake of the original Hatchet. This controversial sequel is surprisingly bland and uninspired. Hatchet II revisits a formula that's been done over and over and over again. While the cast lineup is impressive, the actors really don't do that much with their roles. The gore is served by the bucket loads, but for the most part the death sequences aren't all that memorable. Hatchet II isn't even really scary or suspenseful. And despite...

To help you decide if you should add Hatchet II to your DVD collection or to your Netflix queue, meaning should you buy or rent it, here's a quick nudity recap. Most of the nudity is wasted in the first few minutes of the film. Sarah Agor does a Girls Gone Wild inspired topless scene and Charlayne DeVillier is completely naked in bed (butt and boobs). You can also see Alexis Peters' breasts during a sex scene in the swamp later in the film. People over the age of 18 and not at work may click here to see uncensored vidcaps.

Despite having only several titles released this week in our beloved genre, some of them are deemed very worthy of our hard-earned dollars.
While there were strong initial feelings about a Us remake of a damn near perfect foreign film, the end result is hauntingly accessible to fans of both the book as well as its film adaptation, Let the Right One In. How will you feel about it? Decide for yourself this week. Once you're done with your decision making, raise your Hatchets high and get ready to have a bloody good time because the movie they didn't want you to see is finally here! From there after slugging it out in the swamps of Louisiana, get ready to face off against extraterrestrials in Gareth Edwards' Monsters!
So, go forth and bring home these gems. You know how we feel about them.

Filmmaker Jason Miller, one of the dudes behind-the-scenes on many Adam Green efforts, has a new flick on the way called Infected . It stars Hatchet II 's Alexis Peters and Brian Collins as the Monster. With cameos from Aj Bowen, Adam Green and David Foy. The film also calls on Hatchet vets Will Barratt (cinematographer), Andy Garfield, who did sound and score, and Robert Pendergraft and Aunt Dolly's Garage did the Creature & Make-Up FX. ArieScope alumnus Jason Richard Miller has a new horror short film on the way starring a few very familiar faces to populate his latest landscape of badassery. Get ready to be Infected!
Miller, whom you may know for his work on Adam Rifkin's "Look" The Television Series, Adam Green's Hatchet series, Frozen, Chillerama, and more, is just about ready to deliver his second short film, which you can expect to be cruising the festival circuit in early 2011.

Will Barratt is the director of photography with Andy Garfield handling sound and score and the deliciously loony Robert Pendergraft and Aunt Dolly's Garage doling out the creature F/X along with some violence. We like when Rob does that.

It's like a dream. I'm at the shore in Barcelona, Spain. The hot morning sun reflects off the ocean's blue waves—and Antonio's crystal blue eyes. His wide shoulders could throw me across the ocean. I'm sure of it. He could fight Zeus with no weapons. He was Odysseus in a past life; it's obvious. He wants to go skinny-dipping in the ocean—a very common thing in Spain, apparently. His skin literally sparkles in the sunlight. Unbelievable. Is this heaven? I close my eyes. My mind wanders. Suddenly, I am back in Los Angeles. The traffic is grinding. I'm sitting in my eight-year-old Mazda Miata on the way to an audition. The tires are getting bald, making me cautious to hit the brakes too harshly. The air-conditioning isn't working, and a few days ago it was 113 degrees in the city. I am slowly melting when... Antonio holds his gentle...
