Browsing through the history of cinema, it is hard to find a director as unique as Nobuhiko Obayashi. Known for his unconventional choices even before and especially since his debut feature “House” (1977), Obayashi created movies in a variety of genres, unpredictable on every move. However, surprise was certain at his decision to remake one of the works of his ’80s Onomichi Trilogy, that too being the least acclaimed of the three. A remake of “I Are You, You Am Me” (1982), “Switching: Goodbye Me” (2007) is the director’s second attempt to bring the “Exchange Student” novel to screen.
After his parents divorce, adolescent Kazuo Saitou leaves Onomichi for Nagano, leaving his old girlfriend behind. When he appears in his new school, he meets childhood friend Kazumi, and due to Kazumi’s unreserved narration of their childhood stories, he feels embarrassed. Kazuo meets Kazumi’s philosophical boyfriend, Hiroshi, whom he deems pompous.

The beloved manga series “Fullmetal Alchemist” has had quite a life beyond the pages. Though the original series ran from 2001 through 2010, it has produced two anime series — “Fullmetal Alchemist,” the loose adaptation, and “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood,” a more faithful retelling — a series of light novels, an audio drama, five video games and soon, a live-action adaptation, featuring an all-Japanese cast.

Today more cast members were announced for the upcoming Kanjani8 movie, The Eight Rangers, directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi. Most notably, Becky will play a female detective and Noriyuki Higashiyama will play a villain for the first time in his career.
Kanjani8 is a boy band under Johnny & Associates that made their CD debut in 2004. Partly due to the numeric significance of this year marking their eighth anniversary, a movie version of the sentai parody the group performs at concerts was announced early last month.
Higashiyama will be playing the leader of a terrorist organization called “Dark Crusade”. For his first attempt at playing a villain, he reportedly drew inspiration from Gary Oldman’s character in Luc Besson’s 1994 film Léon while still trying to maintain his own style.

Takashi Shimizu, an icon of modern Japanese horror cinema thanks to his hugely successful “Ju-on” series and its Hollywood “The Grudge” remakes, returns with “Shock Labyrinth”, the country’s first full length live action digital 3D feature. The film is actually based upon ‘The Haunted Hospital’, apparently world’s largest walk-through haunted house attraction, located in the famous Fuji-q Highland theme park. Although a film inspired by a fairground funhouse may sound a little dubious, the production is filled with Shimizu’s trademark surrealism, featuring an offbeat and ambitious narrative alongside plenty of scares and visual flourishes. The film has a cast of popular Japanese stars, including Ai Maeda (“Death Note: The Last Name”), Suzuki Matsuo (“Robo-Geisha”), Misako Renbutsu (“The Battery”), Shoichiro Masumoto (“Tokyo Gore Police”) and Yuya Yagira (“Nobody Knows”). Thankfully, the film retains its gimmick on the small screen, with the DVD release through Chelsea Films coming with both 2D and 3D versions,...

Shock horror! Japanese director Takashi Shimizu's ('Ju-on', 'The Grudge') horror-thriller 'The Shock Labyrinth 3D' is finally arriving on DVD here in the UK! It hit Japanese screens over a year ago but UK distributors Artificial Eye have scored the rights and are eyeing a January 24 release date. Yuya Yagira, Ai Maeda, Suzuki Matsuo, Shoichiro Masumoto, Ryo Katsuji, Misako Renbutsu and Erina Mizuno all star and the DVD itself will come in both 2D and 3D versions along with 2 pairs of (potentially cheap and useless) 3D glasses. 'Shock Labyrinth follows a group of teenagers dealing with the disappearance of one of them, Yuki, at an amusement park s ghost house. On a rainy day 10 years later, Yuki inexplicably returns. However, no sooner is she united with her former friends than she collapses, and the group rushes Yuki to a nearby hospital. But after checking in, they...

The official website for the upcoming omnibus comedy film Sabi Otoko Sabi Onna has been updated with a low-res trailer. “Sabi” is a Japanese word for the refrain of a song, so the title refers to a theme of stories about unique men and women thrown into unconventional situations without any of the usual build up.
“Fine, Totally Fine” director Yosuke Fujita’s segment is called Hagemashi Girls and stars Nanami Sakuraba as Chiharu, a college student who lives to support others. She forms a group called “Hagemashi Girls” with classmates Mamiko (Kumiko Shiratori) and Sanae (Emiko Kawamura), and together they spend all of their time singing and dancing to encourage people. However, when they’re tapped to cheer on a slumping baseball player, their well-meaning hobby begins to backfire in unexpected ways.

Seoul -- "The Shock Labyrinth," the latest film from "The Grudge" director Takashi Shimizu, is to be a 3D live-action movie represented in international markets by Fortissimo Films.
The story takes place in a theme park near Mount Fuji and follows a group of teens dealing with the shock return of a friend they had assumed to be dead.
Produced by Japan's Asmik Ace, the film also marks Shimizu's return to genre filmmaking after a hiatus of several years.
"The production represented a great challenge in creating a brand new way of expressing fear and telling a dramatic story via the medium of 3-D film. I hope as many of you as possible will find yourselves trapped in my labyrinth and enjoy the experience," he said.
The film is in postproduction, having begun principal photography in early July.
Produced by Ogura Jimusyo's Satoru Ogura, Asmik Ace's Masayuki Tanishima and Dai Miyazaki,...

It has been three years since Takashi Shimizu stood beside a film camera and worn his directorial hat—literally. Eschewing the black leather cap that was seemingly glued to his head throughout the production of the Japanese Ju-on and American Grudge movies that made his name, Shimizu is not only sporting new headwear for his newest feature, but is also shooting with a new, custom 3-D digital system, the first for such a production in Japan.
Journeying down to the city of Tateyama, Fango paid a visit to the set of The Shock Labyrinth 3D last week to catch up with director Shimizu’s return to feature filmmaking. Within the peeling walls of a local hospital, Shimizu and his crew are hard at work on one of the final days of shooting. Seated behind a large LCD monitor, the filmmaker reaches over to a spare set of 3-D glasses and hands them to this writer.

I wasn't exactly sure about this upcoming 3d flick from Takashi Shimizu backed by Asmik Ace which stars Yuya Yagira, Misako Renbutsu, Ryo Katsuji, Ai Maeda, Erina Mizuno, and Suzuki Matsuo. Why? Well it didn't sound like much original, but after seeing these technocolor stills, I'm sold. Shock Labyrinth is being shot (mostly) on location at the inspiration for the film, the worlds largest haunted house (according to Guiness) at the Fuji-q High Land amusement park near the base of Mt. Fuji,
The film follows a group of teenagers dealing with the sudden return of a friend who went missing a decade ago. When the friend falls ill, they take her to a hospital but end up trapped in a labyrinthine haunted house.

Wonder why Takashi Shimizu isn’t directing the tenth anniversary installments of his Ju-On franchise himself? The answer is simple enough: because he’s making Japan’s first 3-D horror film instead!

Asmik Ace Entertainment has unveiled details of Japans first live-action digital 3D feature, The Shock Labyrinth, which The Grudge director Takashi Shimizu started shooting earlier this week, reports Screen Daily. Beyond the break you'll find all of the details on this new horror-thriller that finally breaks Shimizu from the curse.
