Tom Morello, Amanda Palmer, Speedy Ortiz, Kimya Dawson, and more have signed an open letter calling for the restoration of net neutrality, stressing the benefits of an open internet for artists.
Net neutrality, as initially codified during the Obama administration in 2015, broadly established regulations for a more open, accessible internet: The rules ensured that internet providers couldn’t do things like restrict access to certain content, slow or accelerate connection speeds, or hamstring connectivity for customers who didn’t pay a premium fee.

Adam Green will be honored with a new tribute album, dubbed Moping in Style, that features renditions of his solo music from artists including Regina Spektor, Father John Misty, and Jenny Lewis. The project arrives in full December 1st, and as a preview, Org Music and Capitane Records have shared Sean Ono Lennon’s cover of “That Fucking Feeling.”
Best known as one-half of The Moldy Peaches, Green has released 11 solo albums over the past twenty years. The impressive roster on Moping in Style speaks to his influence in the indie rock community: in addition to those aforementioned artists, it boasts The Lemon Twigs, Frankie Cosmos, Lou Barlow, The Lemonheads, The Libertines, and Ben Kweller among its contributors. Pre-orders for the tribute album, which arrives on double LP gatefold and CD, are ongoing.

Was the last rock renaissance really in New York City in the aughts? That’s the claim filmmakers Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace make with their documentary adaptation of music journalist Lizzie Goodman’s book “Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City 2001-2011.”
This scuzzy, dreamy nonfiction greatest hits compilation prefers lyricism to reportage, with testimony told entirely in voiceover instead of talking heads. It’s also entirely a montage of on-the-fly found footage — of concerts, early interviews, Courtney Love flashing her boobs to a crowd of frothing onlookers during her 24-hour MTV takeover — and . The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Moldy Peaches, James Murphy, and Interpol all get significant play here, with the film going back to their DIY roots in Lower Manhattan — but leaves us hanging from there. In other ones, “Meet Me” is music to the ears of their...

The Strokes find themselves in the midst of a hurricane of hype in a new clip from the upcoming documentary, Meet Me in the Bathroom.
Inspired by Lizzy Goodman’s 2017 book of the same name, the film chronicles New York City’s early-2000s indie rock boom, of which the Strokes were a central part. Set to the band’s 2001 staple, “Last Nite,” the new clip features an array of footage from the Strokes’ breakthrough moment, with some wild shows and plenty of intriguing archival bits of the band touring the U.

Three years ago, Bea Kristi uploaded a low-fi love song called “Coffee” to YouTube. Little did most listeners know it was the first song she’d written, ever. “I came home from school one day, and I think my dad had noticed that I was getting depressed and kind of bored, so he bought me a secondhand guitar,” recalls the 20-year-old London singer-songwriter. She wrote “Coffee” on her new guitar without giving it much thought — “The tempo changes halfway through, it’s dumb as fuck,” she says now — and though...

Alana Chenevert never really liked her given name. So around 2010, she started calling herself “Dodgr,” in tribute to Oliver Twist and her hometown L.A. baseball team.
“I decided I was just gonna go for it,” she says, calling from Portland, Oregon, where she’s staying with her girlfriend. The year Chenevert took on the name Dodgr was transformative in other ways, too: It’s also when she began getting serious about making music while wrapping up her undergrad degree in anthropology at Humboldt State University in Northern, California.

Fifteen years ago, Frances Quinlan was a first-year art student in Maryland who listened to a lot of strange, singular folk songwriters like Joanna Newsom, Jeff Mangum, and Kimya Dawson. Unlike most people her age with the same artists on the playlists in their heads, she was also writing memorable songs of her own. In time she moved to Philadelphia and formed a blazingly intense indie rock band, Hop Along, which worked its way up to national acclaim and a devoted live audience with 2015’s Painted Shut and 2018’s Bark Your Head Off,...

This weekend marks the limited and VOD release of God Help the Girl, a musical from Stuart Murdoch, best known as the lead singer of Belle and Sebastian. God Help the Girl, which emerged out of a musical side project for Murdoch, follows three friends who start a band during a summer in Glasgow. It has, yes, been described as “twee,” a word now practically synonymous with Belle and Sebastian.

Evangeline Lilly has said that she was initially promised that there would be no "love triangle" in the Hobbit films.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug sees Tauriel (Lilly) being wooed by both Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Kili (Aidan Turner).

Lilly told Access Hollywood that her Lost character Kate Austen's love triangle made her reluctant to shoot The Hobbit's romantic storyline.
"For the record, when I took this job, in 2011, I made one stipulation. That's it," she joked. "I just said… I swear to God, I said, 'I will not do this film if you will not guarantee me one thing. You have to guarantee me there will be no love triangle'."
She continued: "And there wasn't. For the whole time I shot. For a year of shooting there was no love triangle… And then, I came back for re-shoots in 2012 and they were like,...

It seems the old school, formulaic rom-com, fodder for many a Saturday afternoon watching cable on the couch, is becoming a thing of the past. The latest crop of romantic comedies have more than a meet cute and a big kiss at the end – they’re more honest, more crass, and more serious than ever before. Case in point: Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s porn addiction saga Don Jon, which opens today, and follows a recent trend in the rom-com genre – a protagonist with a very serious problem.

As I compiled this list of musical scenes written or improvised by the actors who performed them, I quickly realized that I could never cover everything. The amount of music written by the actors in Christopher Guest films alone would more than double the size of this article. So I tried to limit myself to scenes and movies that I'd be able to give some fun insight on.
I literally got goosebumps rewatching some of these musical scenes. I hope you're inspired to give some of these movies a whirl in the DVD/Blu-ray player afterwards with a new sense of appreciation for the work that went into these musical moments.

Aesop Rock hasn't produced a full-length solo album since 2007's None Shall Pass. In the years since, kids started and graduated high school, Rebecca Black swiftly rose and fell, and a new guy who calls himself A$AP Rocky became the person everyone thinks you're talking about when you say Aesop Rock. But that's all about to change, because the chain-smoking prophet has a 6th studio album coming out July 10, Skelethon, featuring guest spots by Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz from Hail Mary Mallon, and Kimya Dawson, who he's working on a separate project with as well. From what we can tell from the album's first single, "Zero Dark Thirty," there's been no spitting speed lost in the intervening years. Check the single out below, and head to Aesop Rock's official site to preview the album's trippy artwork by Spanish painter Aryz.

Kimya Dawson, the puff-haired doyenne of the antifolk scene, projects a sort of den mother image. Her music, with its lo-fi confessionals and goofy wordplay, prompts fans to confide in her online and at shows. On her new album “Thunder Thighs,” she sings, “to your most desperate emails I’d say this is what I do,” offering advice in the title of the song “Walk Like Thunder,” which chronicles the aftermath of an overdose 10 years ago.

A month after his shocking death, the Ramsey County, Minnesota, medical examiner's office has reported that indie rapper Mike "Eyedea" Larsen died of a drug overdose.
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the cause of death for St. Paul native Larsen was "opiate toxicity," with no specific drugs mentioned as contributing factors. The overdose was ruled accidental.
The day after her son's death, Larsen's mother, Kathy Averill, said Eyedea did not suffer from any addictions.
Eyedea, half of the popular underground hip-hop duo Eyedea & Abilities, was remembered at a public service in St. Paul on October 28 that was attended by more than 2,000 people. The Youth In Revolt soundtrack. You know, Michael Cera is becoming a pretty trustworthy star. Seems odd to use that word, the S word, for a young weedy guy who’s carved a niche for himself playing young weedy guys, but his ironic deadpan humour and his tendency to pick pretty solid projects (Year One certainly should have been funny) mean he’s actually quite an attractive box office draw, like an uncool Michael J Fox. Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is exactly the kind of film you should be making if your face, voice and persona mean you’re going to be frolicking in the youth market for a few years to come. He doesn’t tend to make by-the-numbers crap is what I’m saying, which those of you who are under 21 should all thank him for, because it is on your behalf that he foregoes the crap.

We here at Quick Stop Entertainment are true lovers of music, in all its forms. We’re also quite keen on the spirit of competition, and of spurring creativity through said competition.
To that end, we launched a unique form of creative combat here at the Stop.
In this age of manufactured and painfully earnest talent contests, we’ve decided to instead shine a light on the quirky, quixotic underworld of musicians that don’t get nearly the attention they deserve.
Ah, but I did mention that there was a competition involved…
Like a songwriting version of Iron Chef, the competitors will be presented with a very specific songwriting challenge. They’ll be given one week to complete their songs - however they see fit, within the parameters set forth - after which time the entries will be uploaded to Quick Stop to be voted on by you, the audience.

To that end, we launched a unique form of creative combat here at the Stop.
In this age of manufactured and painfully earnest talent contests, we’ve decided to instead shine a light on the quirky, quixotic underworld of musicians that don’t get nearly the attention they deserve.

This week we’ve delving into the dusty depths of our music collections to muse on how movies have affected them. Music is an integral and downright essential ingredient in the cinematic recipe, whether it be a haunting score or a pulsing soundtrack crammed full of recognizable chart-toppers, and as such we’re doffing our cap to these tuneful treasures by asking everyone at Team Boxwish: “Have you ever been inspired by a movie to buy an artist’s music?”
Tim: “Definitely, I’m a soundtrack obsessive. I became a big fan of Hans Zimmer because of his tracks on Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, and the whole soundtrack he did for The Last Samurai was amazing. I got introduced to Eddie Vedder because of Into the Wild (I was online buying the soundtrack before I’d even finished watching the movie!) Last, but certainly not least, I know I...

Acm@Uco So you wanna be a rock 'n' roll star? Well, built on the whole School of Rock phenomenon that has become many musically talented kids' new right of passage, there may now be a logical next step that comes with a college diploma. Starting August 12th at the University of Central Oklahoma, a new music division will open its doors, focusing on the study of all facets of popular music such as performance, production and business affairs. Considering the difficulties awaiting most music students and with an eye on the current state of a downsizing business environment, The Academy of Contemporary Music -- the concept and successful, award-winning British program founded in 1995 -- comes with a reality-based approach, presenting the music student with a well-rounded, practical education in all areas of the field as well as helping to supply...

Tiny Masters Of Today are poster children for the glories of precocious youth. The Brooklyn siblings—Ivan, 15, and Ada, 13—have benefited from a series of absurd opportunities and encounters: guest appearances from Karen O and Kimya Dawson on their debut album, tour backing from Blues Explosion drummer Russell Simins, effusive praise from David Bowie. All of that has transformed the band into a vehicle for indie luminaries in search of childhood innocence, and Skeletons, Tiny Masters’ second album, provides a more comprehensive explanation why. It’s short (11 songs in 26 minutes), produced on Garageband, and endlessly earnest ...

Former The Moldy Peaches star Kimya Dawson is set to write music for legendary children's TV show Sesame Street.
Dawson, whose music with The Moldy Peaches has received a lot of attention following its use on the soundtrack of recent Oscar winner Juno, is in talks with TV bosses to compose and record songs for Sesame Street.
She tells Billboard.com, "I might do some music work with (Sesame Street), which is like my dream. I'm a kid of the '70s, and I definitely grew up with Sesame Street - the old Sesame Street. I'm just a huge, huge fan."
And Dawson insists she is the perfect candidate for Sesame Street as she's just finished recording a new album of children's music, Alphabutt.
Describing that disc, Dawson adds, "I think the songs are really free, which is a little different from a lot of other kids music I've heard. And I think kids will connect with it, musically, because it's actually kids playing. It's really free and kind of wild."...
