Brazilian auteur Carolina Markowicz will head to Bucharest to hone her third feature, “The Funeral.” In development, the film was selected for the 2024 Pop Up Residency, pairing Markowicz with multi-prized Romanian producer Ada Solomon for a three-week consultancy.
“It’s truly a privilege to be able to dialogue with an industry professional like Ada, a producer who has made some films I truly admire. Daring, original and different. I love the artists who still dare to take risks, this is so rare nowadays. I’m looking forward to hearing her take on my film, and very honored to have it selected by her,” Markowicz told Variety.
The residency is part of an exclusive development initiative from Projeto Paradiso, which additionally awarded Markowicz a Paradiso Scholarship this year to attend the Tfl ScriptLab for the budding concept. It’s the fifth consecutive year that the partner program has offered the residency to a Brazilian filmmaker.

Projeto Paradiso has announced in Cannes that Daniel Bandeira has won the Pop Up Film Residency Paradiso. The program is created exclusively for Brazilian professionals.
Bandeira, currently developing “Red Express,” is also behind “Property”, which premiered at the Berlinale’s Panorama back in February. Born in Pernambuco, he has been a filmmaker since 2001, making his feature debut with “Peer Pressure.”

Cannes–The Pop Up Film Residency, a mentorship program launched this year by former TorinoFilmLab artistic director Matthieu Darras and Slovak producer Juraj Krasnohorsky, has announced three new residents, four new hosts, and two new creative partners for 2019.
Based in Bratislava, the program offers a three-week residency in Slovakia each month, along with a series of international residencies throughout the year with a growing network of partners, including Cannes Critics’ Week, Eave and the Doha Film Institute.
“The big difference between this residency and other support schemes for talents is that it’s really tailor-made,” said Darras. “Once we really get an understanding of the person, the project, we actually find the good residency.”

“Firecrackers” director Jasmin Mozaffari and “Skate Kitchen” helmer Crystal Moselle, who won Stockholm Film Festival’s best film and debut, respectively, sat with Variety after the awards ceremony on Friday to discuss their next projects.
Moselle is an up-and-coming filmmaker who already boasts an impressive track record, having won Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize with her 2015 documentary “The Wolfpack,” and this year’s Sundance Audience Prize with her narrative debut “Skate Kitchen,” a vibrant, naturalistic portrait of an all-female, multiracial skater crew in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
After “The Wolfpack” which revolved around six brothers who lived confined in a New York housing project, Moselle continued to work with non-professionals for “Skate Kitchen,” leading them to deliver performances that felt completely authentic. “I’m obsessed with authentic realism and when I work with non-actors I feel that I can make them virgins of themselves,” said Moselle, who is based in New York.

Jasmin Mozaffari’s “Firecrackers” and Crystal Moselle’s “Skate Kitchen,” a pair of bold and timely North American features, won best film and best debut at the 29th edition of the Stockholm Film Festival, whose awards were almost entirely scooped by female talents.
“Firecrackers,” which world premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, marks the feature debut of Canadian helmer Mozaffari. The drama follows two best friends who plot a revenge against an abusing ex who violated one of them. But things spin out of control beyond a point of no return.
The festival praised “Firecrackers” for “its originality in portraying the love between two friends, in its urge for freedom, autonomy, loyalty in a violent world, and bringing us to situations in a way that we have never seen before.”
It’s “a perfectly directed film where all elements come together in a unique universe of its own,” the festival added.

In a screenwriting process that would end up being more informed by Beatriz Seigner‘s hands-on docu approach, Los Silencios presents the secluded, no-man’s lands border Amazonian area with a sophisticated genre touch. The Heiresses San Sebastian Film festival has announced the 12 Latin American films that will compete for its Horizontes Latinos Award this September, including films from Carlos Reygadas, Ana Katz and Beatriz Seigner.
Marcelo Martinessi's The Heiresses (Las Herederas) - which opens in UK cinemas today - will be the opening night film for the section. He and some of his cast will be in the Spanish town with the film that tells the story of a woman, who finds herself blossoming after her long-time lover is incarcerated (read what he told us about the film here.

A muddily solemn study of refugees at an Amazonian intersection of nationalities — and other existential states — turns quite literally luminous in “Los Silencios,” a sensitively observed, patience-rewarding sophomore feature from Brazilian writer-director Beatriz Seigner. Though the ongoing tragedy of the Colombian armed conflict weighs heavily on this intimate portrait of a family riven by it, Seigner’s film isn’t politically portentous. Instead, it uses topical scene-setting for a more lyrical meditation on the liminal nature of refugee identity, drifting into the supernatural to ponder the everyday struggle of living with death in more ways than one. Modest in form but enlarged with strength of feeling and increasingly striking visuals, this Cannes Directors’ Fortnight highlight isn’t an obvious commercial play, but should accumulate boutique distributor interest as it moves calmly through the festival circuit.

Cannes, France — Beatriz Seigner’s debut “Bollywood Dream” was the first Brazilian co-production with India. Her second directorial outing, “Los Silencios,” screening in the Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight, follows a widowed mother and her children trying to make a living on the Colombia-Brazil-Peru border at a place where the life live with the dead, after the family’ father has apparently been killed during the Colombian Farc conflict. Brazil’s Directors’ Fortnight entry “Los Silencios” typifies a growing breed of Brazilian films, shot in multiple locations and in co-production with one or more countries. Beatriz Seigner’s cross-border drama about a Colombian family fleeing the armed conflict in their native country was co-produced by Seigner’s Miriade Filmes and Leonardo Mecchi’s Enquadramento Prods. Following the first lineup announcement for the 71st Cannes Film Festival, yesterday Critics’ Week arrived, and now today we get two more sidebar reveals. The seventh and final selection for the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight under the aegis of artistic director Edouard Waintrop, announced today (17 April) shows a strong Latin American presence although France is also to the fore. In total there are 20 features and ten shorts.

The Latin American representation revolves around the opening film from Colombia, Pajaros De Verano by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra. Guerra was in the Fortnight in 2015 with El Abrazo De La Serpiente. Others include Comprame Un Revolver by Julio Hernandez Cordon (Mexico), El Motoarrebatador by Agustin Toscano (Argentina), and Los Silencios by Beatriz Seigner (Brazil and Colombia).

The 50th edition of Directors’ Fortnight, the section running parallel to the Cannes Film Festival, will open with Colombian directors Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego’s “Birds of Passage.”
The lavishly shot “Birds of Passage,” which marks Guerra’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated “Embrace of the Serpent,” takes place in Colombia in the 1970s, when the demand for marijuana hits Colombia, quickly turning farmers into seasoned businessmen. Unfolding in the Guajira desert, “Birds of Passage” follows a Wayuu indigenous family who take a leading role in this new drug trade and discover the perks of wealth and power but also encounter violence and tragedy.

Debra Granik, Romain Gavras, Ciro Guerra and Gaspar Noe are among the directors whose films will be included in the 50th Directors’ Fortnight, an independent sidebar that will run concurrently with the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Granik will go to Cannes with “Leave No Trace,” her first narrative film since the Oscar-nominated “Winter’s Bone” in 2010, and a film that received strong reviews when it premiered at Sundance in January.
Gavras, best known for his videos for M.I.A., Kanye West and Jay-z and others, will be there with “Le monde est a toi,” while Guerra and his co-director Cristina Gallego, who made the Oscar-nominated “Embrace of the Serpent,” will bring “Birds of Passage” to Directors’ Fortnight.

The Argentinian provocateur Noe will bring “Climax” to the festival.
Also in the selection: Panos Cosmatos’ horror film “Mandy,” which features what is reportedly another wild performance from Nicolas Cage.
Of the 20 feature films in the section, 15 are directed by men and four by women, with “Birds of Passage” a collaboration between male and female directors.

Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Realisateurs) was established in 1969, in the aftermath of a 1968 Cannes Film Festival that was canceled midway through in solidarity with the protests sweeping through France. It was set up to offer a more daring and experimental slate than the main festival, and over the years provided the first Cannes exposure for such directors as Martin Scorsese, Werner Herzog, Michael Haneke and Spike Lee.
Directors’ Fortnight will open on May 9 and run through May 19.

Update: Outgoing Directors’ Fortnight chief Edouard Waintrop revealed a 20-strong 50th anniversary lineup today that includes a return engagement for some, and a surprise inclusion for one of the most controversial filmmakers ever to hit the Croisette. Gaspar Noé will world premiere his Climax, appearing for the first time in the section after turns in Official Selection with such films as Love, Enter The Void and Irreversible. Climax has been kept close to the vest, with some conflicting information circulating (we will update when we know more).
The Fortnight will open with Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s Birds Of Passage. The 1970s-set film about the early days of the drug trade is a return to the section for Guerra whose 2015 Embrace Of The Serpent became Colombia’s first Foreign Language Oscar nominee.
Also notable on the roster are Guillaume Nicloux’s Les Confins Du Monde. His Valley Of Love...

The Sørfond Pitching Forum received a record number of applications for its fifth edition. The level of quality among the submitted projects impressed the jury and it was definitely a challenge for them to only choose eight projects.
