The White House is the oldest public building in the nation’s capital — and with that comes an age-old problem: pests.
A list of White House work orders obtained by NBC Washington reveals that 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is overrun with vermin — including mice in the Situation Room and a mess hall, ants in White House Chief of Staff John Kelly’s office, and at least four reported cockroach infestations on the premises.
“They are old buildings,” former Gsa Inspector General Brian Miller explained to NBC Washington. “Any of us who have old houses know old houses need a lot of work.

Hulu is about to release its adaptation of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.
If you're unfamiliar with the story, it's set in a near-future America that has been decimated by environmental troubles, war and the onset of an infertility crisis nobody knew how to solve.
It’s a harrowing look at could happen when the rights we’ve fought for and won in a democracy are threatened and lost because of complacency.
In other words, it’s a story that could be about our society today if we not careful.
Having never imagined myself a feminist by the traditional definition of the word, but I am so incredibly proud to be a part of television today which is on the receiving end of so many talented women creating spectacular programming. This is how it should always be.
Not only did Atwood write The Handmaid’s Tale in response to...

Director Amy E. Scott is turning her longtime love of director Hal Ashby, who brought us "Harold and Maude" and "Coming Home" and a dozen other gems in the 70s and 80s, into a feature-length documentary tribute. (Videos after the jump.) Currently in the home stretch of its Indiegogo campaign, "Once I Was: The Hal Ashby Story" will cover the director's life and career from debut feature "The Landlord" (1970) through his death in 1988. It has so far raised $48,000 of its $50,000 goal. And with 11 days to go, it should cross the finish line. Exec producers (and Ashby fans) Fred Beebe and Brian Miller recently jumped aboard the project, lovingly summarized here by the director herself: I had to skip film class as a college freshman to see "Harold and Maude." As a student, we were being fed a steady diet of Stanley Kubrick, Chris Marker and Jean Luc Godard- but...

More than four decades after they first squared off on an isolated desert planet, William Shatner comes face-to-face again with the menacing Gorn species of Star Trek fame to settle a longstanding feud… but this time the battle begins on a comfy sofa with the two former foes seated in front of a video screen as they fight again in promotion for the April 23 release of Star Trek: The Video Game.
The original Kirk-Gorn duel was seen in the classic 1967 “Arena” episode of the Star Trek series. Millions of people have viewed the original on YouTube.
In the promotional video released today, Shatner and the Gorn are seen casually playing Star Trek: The Video Game when an onscreen dispute leads to a friendly fight re-enacting actual choreographed punches from the classic TV brawl blow-for-blow. This time, however, couch pillows replace the space rocks that were thrown the first time around.

It’s been a long wait for the Star Trek sequel, especially as time appears to drag as we approach the May 17th release date. To help us out, Paramount and Bandai Namco are filling some of that gap with Star Trek The Video Game.

But don’t confuse this with your standard movie tie-in schlock. It’s the kind of paradox that Mr. Spock finds fascinating — and the type of unmet challenge that Capt. James T. Kirk can’t resist: No franchise has a longer history with video game fans than Star Trek, but to today’s Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 audiences it’s a brand that might as well be lost in space.
That may change with the April 23 release of Star Trek: The Video Game (available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as well as a Microsoft Windows PC version), which seeks a new commercial frontier for a brand that is heavy on heritage but light on contemporary credibility.

I don't know how I got around to playing it, but the first (and only) "Star Trek" game I've ever had any extended period of time with was "Begin: a Tactical Starship Adventure," the space strategy game that offered something like a billion ways to be blown out of space. That game tended towards the hard sci-fi elements of the original series and less towards the high concept, action adventure stuff that's become associated with the J.J. Abrams reboot.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's just really pronounced.
Anyway, this new trailer offers yet another look at the development of Digital Extremes' "Star Trek The Video Game" with Paramount Pictures' Senior Vice President Brian Miller offering his two cents on why Kirk and Spock would make the ultimate partners in a co-op shooter.
There's a lot of leaping and exploding going on in that trailer, plus is Spock taking on stealth missions?...

The video game narrative centers on a bartender who is sent back in time to relive the fates of his ancestors, all of them assassins. - In 2011, fanatical Reddit commenter and Jeopardy winner James Erwin started an elaborate thread on whether a modern U.S. Marine infantry batallion could defeat the Roman empire. I'm always experiencing Déjà vu these days. Like the other day I visited a lovely Cornish pub for a cosy meal with my wife Ally, and yet all of a sudden I had this notable feeling that I'd been there before. No word of warning, and then Bam! It was like I'd suddenly realised that I'd been a patron of this lovely olde worlde pub in another life. Back in the 1800s, I was probably one of those poor scribes clamouring for a slice of bread, slab of cheese and lots of ale in return for a dreary recital of my latest meisterwork. The pub would have seen a mass exodus of people, leaving me to mop the floor with my upturned head.
Still, this Déjà vu can extend to the telly - the problem with modern British TV is that these days, there seems to be more repeats than...

"How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr Foster?, an admiring documentary about the British architect Norman Foster, by Norberto López Amado and Carlos Carcas, gives the viewer quite a lot to marvel at, which is, after all, the root meaning of the word 'admire,'" begins Ao Scott in the New York Times. "Hillbilly horror is nothing new," writes Cheryl Eddy in the San Francisco Bay Guardian. "Some might mark its heyday as the 1970s, a decade containing Deliverance (1972), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Hills Have Eyes (1977), and I Spit On Your Grave (1978). Others might point to Herschell Gordon Lewis's immortal Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964), probably cinema's most persuasive example of why Yankees road-tripping below the Mason-Dixon Line should never, for any reason, detour off the main highway…. But what if, asks Eli Craig's Tucker and Dale vs Evil, you were totally misjudging those sinister-seeming whiskey-tango yokels? What if, despite being a little unwashed and fond of sharp objects and power tools, they...
"Hillbilly horror is nothing new," writes Cheryl Eddy in the San Francisco Bay Guardian. "For a decade starting in the late 60s, the Kashmere Stage Band — a funk-infused outfit rooted in a poor, predominantly black neighborhood in northeast Houston — built a reputation as the most formidable high school band in the country." Scott Tobias for NPR: "Under the leadership of Conrad O Johnson Sr, a prodigious musician in his own right (he once played with Count Basie), the band zigged where others zagged, embracing the sounds (and moves) of James Brown and Otis Redding while its peers were mimicking the ossified standards of 40s big bands. In competition — and on recordings — the contrast was clear: The Kashmere Stage Band was lively, exuberant, spontaneous and contemporary, and the also-rans were square nostalgists."
"Three decades after graduation, members reunite to honor their beloved 93-year-old bandleader, teacher and role model," writes Eric Hynes in Time Out New York. "Amid its celebrations of black power, ambitious Afros and fly female trombonists,...

The unofficial trailer for the new film Things Fall Apart has making the rounds on the Internet. The film stars Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson in his “most critically acclaimed role” according to the trailer and Ray Liotta as his doctor. The film is a sports drama centered around Jackson’s budding football career and according to the trailer something goes medically wrong. Jackson wrote the film alongside Brian Miller and it is apparently based on the story of Jackson’s next door neighbor – which makes it a little harder to laugh at the trailer…but not too hard.

It's time to watch 'Things Fall Apart,' but forget Chinua Achebe. With the help of Brian Miller, 50 Cent wrote himself a sports drama that lets him bite into dramatic fare and enter the illustrious circle of actors who go skeletal for their craft. As we showed you last May, the firmly pectoraled rapper lost a whole lotta weight to play Deon, a college football star stricken with a cancerous tumor in his chest.
Now we've got a trailer to, well, experience, because just as Vulture rightly pondered, "The video quality and the musical transitions lead us to believe this was edited in somebody's basement around 2Am last night."

The movie is called Things Fall Apart and it stars 50 Cent, excuse me, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson as a cancer-stricken football player. Jackson lost 60 pounds for the roll as I'm sure you, along with everyone else, already knew.
The film co-stars Ray Liotta as 50's doctor, Lynn Whitfield as his mother and Mario Van Peebles as his friend. The official synopsis calls it a "humorous, touching story" and compares it to "the Oscar winning film The Blind Side" while the trailer sports Nelly's "Just a Dream", which must have cost them a pretty penny for the rights.
50 co-wrote the film with Brian Miller and Van Peebles directed it. There's no release date, but I wouldn't hold out hope for it arriving in theaters. Have a look at the trailer below and see what you think.
