We have a giveaway from our partners at Syfy that could make a great gift this season (well, we would keep it for ourselves, but that’s up to you). Syfy recently released its compilation of the history of the genre that made it famous: The Science Fiction Universe… And Beyond.
This book chronicles everything from George Méliès’ iconic 1902 film, A Trip to the Moon, to one of our favorite superhero aliens, Superman. Dive into the nostalgia and excitement of classic favorites like Star Wars, Planet of the Apes and Tron, and re-familiarize yourself with newer titles The Avengers, Transformers and Avatar.
Although we only have one book to give away, you’re in luck. Syfy will be airing its 20th Anniversary Special on Monday, December 10th at 9/8c featuring many of the familiar faces, stories and sci-fi staples seen in this book.

We’re dreadfully behind in citing the overabundance of our contributors’ latest releases. There are already enough to fill three bookcases, but here are even more!
Michael Mallory mostly contributed to Comics Scene. He has Two recent books of great note: Universal Studios Monsters: A Legacy Of Horror (Universe Publishing, hc, $40). This is a sumptuous coffee table book chronicling those iconic Universal Studios versions of the various monsters: Count Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Phantom of the Opera, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and others. Chapters on each (and coverage of such Universal actors as Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr. & Sr.) offer mostly familiar stories (and rather too much plot synopsis) for those already enamored of the subject. Newcomers to the Universal arena, however, will be entranced by the text. The best part of the book is the visuals...

If you're a fan of the classic Universal Studios movie monsters, including Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Mummy, and more, then you've probably found yourself haunted by a severe lack of ginormous books that focus on your obsession. With Halloween just around the corner, Michael Mallory's Universal Studios Monsters: A Legacy of Horror arrives just in time.
It's chock full of over 300 black and white and 25 color behind-the-scenes photos, original movie posters, publicity shots, and articles from people like James Whale (director of Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and many more), makeup marvel Jack P. Piece, FX man John Fulton, and more. It's officially endorsed by the studio, so I'm not sure if this will be the Bela Lugosi tell-all expose that you're looking for. The whole package is 252 pages long, and at 9" by 12 ", it can double as a blunt object if you need to brain anyone.
