The punk horror of Talk to Me, the beauty of Shayda and the heartbreak of Man on Earth – it has been a cracker year
The best Australian children’s books of 2023: Alice Pung, Davina Bell, Sean Avery and more
In these lists of the best Australian films of the year, I keep my eyes out for any patterns or trends. For example, three of 2022’s best titles were about rivers; half of 2021’s were documentaries; 2019 saw a sharp disconnect between the best versus the most popular Aussie films; and 2018 brought a batch of particularly bold and uncompromising works.
Perhaps this year, you, dear reader, can have a crack at discerning a pattern for yourselves. The 10 films below are a rather eclectic batch, spanning a wide range of genres – from dystopian drama to heartbreaking documentary, romance, outback noir, horror and more. To qualify for this list, films needed to have...

Sean Avery is still under a restraining order. Earlier this month, a court ruled that Hilary Rhoda‘s temporary restraining order against her 43-year-old husband will remain in effect, Et confirms.
Rhoda, 36, filed for divorce from Avery, a former NHL player, in July 2022. The model’s temporary restraining order against Avery, which prevents the Oppenheimer actor from coming in contact with her and their nearly 3-year-old son, Nash, was first granted last October.
It will now remain in effect until the next hearing in their court case, which is scheduled for Sept. 11.
Et has reached out to Avery and Rhoda’s lawyers for comment.
In the 2022 court docs, which were obtained by Et, Rhoda accused her husband, whom she wed in 2015, of both domestic and child abuse.
Rhoda began by detailing an alleged September 2022 incident when Avery was arrested for domestic battery. She alleges that Avery “entered my house (even...

A star-studded new historical comedy that’s amusing at best, noxious at worst, and frantically self-insistent upon its own negligible entertainment value at all times as it strains to find the beauty in the mad tapestry of life? That’s right: David O. Russell is back. And while the volatile director’s recent work has been damning enough to dampen enthusiasm for this comeback on its own — even without Russell’s various personal controversies — it doesn’t exactly help matters that his first movie in seven years is

It’s been quite a while since audiences have been graced with the release of a David O’ Russell picture. From 2010 to 2015, a David O’ Russell film had been almost a yearly event with an accompanying cascade of awards to supplement the mass acclaim his movies received.
Russell has taken extra time to work on his next project and with the forced delays of the Covid pandemic, audiences have been left wondering when they’d ever see his next movie. At long last, the wait is over. Amsterdam has been announced as the next film by David O’ Russell and a release date is looming on the horizon.

John David Washington trains to prevent World War III in the latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s time-bending thriller, Tenet. The new trailer debuted on online video game Fortnite.

Main character Washington navigates foreboding warnings to use the word tenet — which can open both the right and wrong doors — “carefully,” and to be aware of dubious interests from other countries. “Tenet” and “Fortnite” became an unlikely duo Thursday night.
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming thriller teased more action and time-bending mystery in a new trailer released in the hugely popular battle royale video game.
Not much is known about the film, which is Nolan’s first since 2017’s “Dunkirk.” It follows a group of secret agents who are working to prevent World War III and appear to utilize time-bending abilities in their mission.
The trailer showed big action setpieces in several countries, including a Boeing 747 driving through a building in a fiery crash. Another brand new scene showed an intense shootout in a concert hall full of people who appeared knocked out or asleep. A couple characters also mentioned saving “people in the future who need us” and how they’ll need to “reverse the flow of time.”

Far and away the worst summer movie of 2018, “Mile 22” represents a bold new low for modern Hollywood’s most patriotic duo, as Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg’s dick-swinging brand of American exceptionalism is starting to feel more than a little forced in these unexceptional times.
While “Lone Survivor” was basically a recruitment film, “Patriot’s Day” was an all-too-engaging dramatization of the Boston Bombing, and “Deepwater Horizon” was a scorching pyrotechnics display that paled next to Margaret Brown’s documentary about the same disaster, the very fictional “Mile 22” is almost bad enough to make you wish Berg hadn’t run out of terrible events that could be turned into popcorn entertainment. Without a bloody foundation of truth to ground their swagger in reality or give it some kind of moral purpose, these two certified alpha males are completely lost; it’s like they were given all the...

Swimsuit model Hilary Rhoda is embroiled in civil litigation with her mother and former manager over claims that Marianne Rhoda stole millions from her daughter's personal accounts, court documents obtained by People confirm. The Sports Illustrated model filed a federal lawsuit against her mother in 2014, prompting a newly filed counterclaim by Marianne, documents reveal. In her suit, Rhoda, who is married to former New York Ranger Sean Avery, alleges her mother "manipulated her familial role to improperly seize - and then abuse - enormous power over Hilary's finances." The legal filing further alleges Rhoda's mother forged her signature on bank...

Sean Avery, the ex-nfl player who competed on season 18 of Dancing with the Stars, quit his off-Broadway play in dramatic fashion Tuesday night.
Sean Avery's Broadway Tantrum
Avery, 34, made a hasty exit on Tuesday from Negative Is Positive after proving to be a volatile person to work with. On Monday, he stormed out of rehearsals, and by the next day he had a full-on meltdown and walked away from the off-Broadway show. “He’s a playwright’s worst nightmare,” Negative writer Christy Smith-Sloman told Page Six.
What set Avery off on Tuesday? An offer of pizza. A stage manager named Natalie asked the former athlete if he wanted a slice of pizza. He said no, and then after mistakenly hearing Natalie call him an a--hole, proceeded to flip out, according to Smith-Sloman.
Natalie added, “He said I was ‘talking s--t‘ and said I was ‘so full of s--t...

As a professional dancer on Dancing With the Stars, Karina Smirnoff knows all the right moves to look great while working hard. Since spending hours upon end in the studio can wreak havoc on skin, the professional dancer has learned how to break a sweat without breaking out. Dancing with the Stars returned Monday night with the celebrities back with their original professional partners following the Switch-Up. This week, they were tasked with taking on Disney-themed routines set to songs from the classic movie musicals.
Dancing With the Stars Recap
First to hit the dance floor was Drew Carey and his pro partner Cheryl Burke, who choreographed an Aladdin-themed quickstep. Even though they threw the Genie into the dance that was set to the tune of “Friend Like Me,” the judges couldn’t be distracted from Carey’s lack of technique. Scores: 7+7+7+7=28
Next up was ice dancer Charlie White and Sharna Burgess. For their jazz routine, they channeled Mary Poppins, dancing to "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." The routine included a cane for White and the iconic dancing penguins. Though white dropped the cane, the cheeriness of the performance along with his technical skill impressed the panel of judges. Dancing With the Stars returned on Monday with special guest judge, DWTS alum Julianne Hough, seated between Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli for the dancing competition’s “Switch-Up” week in which no one faced elimination.
Dancing With the Stars Recap
Candace Cameron Bure, now paired up with Tony Dovolani, took on a quickstep. Bure’s experience as an actress definitely allowed her to really play up the character in the routine. However, she’s looked better in past weeks with Mark Ballas. Her poor footwork in the ballroom dance was glaring. Score: 7+7+7+7 = 28
James Maslow, separated from Peta Murgatroyd, danced a tango with Cheryl Burke. Maslow wasn’t set back at all by the switch-up, giving another solid performance in the Latin dance routine in which he played a suitor to Burke’s queen. All of the judges – save Goodman – gave him a 9. Score: 9+8+9+9=35

Dancing with the Stars picked up this week following last week’s double elimination of athletes Diana Nyad and Sean Avery with its seasonal “The Most Memorable Year” episode, featuring Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts as a guest judge.
Dancing With the Stars Recap
The first to take the dance floor were Big Time Rush singer James Maslow and his professional partner Peta Murgatroyd. Maslow had chosen to represent the year 2007 – when he finally stopped getting bullied for being overweight growing up. In the high school-themed jive, Maslow showcased his athleticism with flips and kicks that duly impressed the judges’ panel. Score: 36
Dancing the rumba were NeNe Leakes and Tony Dovolani for the year Leakes got remarried to her ex-husband (2013). The dance was all about the passion and even included a bed for a prop. Leakes’ performance was an overall improvement, though Dovolani definitely stole the spotlight. Score: 31

Billy Dee Williams's luck is about to run out. According to our predictions, he'll be the next sent home on "Dancing With the Stars," getting overwhelming 3/10 odds to be eliminated, followed by NeNe Leakes with 7/2 odds and, surprisingly, James Maslow, one of last week's top scorers, who gets odds of 18/1. -Break- Did James Maslow deserve his high scores for showing skin? Williams has posted the lowest judges' score for the first two weeks in a row: 15 out of 30 for both dances. He was spared elimination last week, however, thanks to ample fan support, which was bad news for the next two lowest week-one dancers: swimmer Diana Nyad and hockey player Sean Avery. But with those two now out of contention there may not be enough fan support to overcome his low marks. The 76-year-old actor is also expected to receive the lowest scores for the third week in a row,...

On "Dancing with the Stars" Season 18, week 2, Sean Avery and Karina Smirnoff were eliminated from the competition. It couldn't have been much of a surprise to "DWTS" fans, and it wasn't a shock to Avery either.
But Avery's reasons for the elimination, which he laid out on "Good Morning America" Tuesday (March 25), might not be quite accurate. Instead, he was eliminated because he didn't work as a "Dancing with the Stars" contestant.
Like many eliminated "DWTS" contestants, Avery appeared on "Gma" the morning after his loss. Unlike most of them, the hockey star was actively angry about the situation. "I think we knew as of Monday last week that our fate was sealed," Avery says in his interview. "I was upset with the package they had run the week previous ... When "Dancing with the Stars" came to an end Monday night (March 24), two pairings were shown the door following a surprise double elimination. One of the eliminated celebs, Sean Avery, suspects a bit of foul play.
During an appearance on "Good Morning America" Tuesday, Avery blamed a disagreement he had with producers of the show for his elimination. "I think we knew as of Monday last week that our fate was sealed," he says. "I had a conversation with [executive producer] Conrad Green ... I was upset with the package they had run the week previous. It was a very tacky attempt to show me as the bad boy of 'Dancing with the Stars.'
"I think that in reality TV, or some sort of competition, if you have a disagreement with producers, then generally that seals your fate quite early," he adds. Still, the former hockey player says he had the...

Dancing with the Stars continued with season 18 Monday night with a surprise double-elimination and the stars taking on their preferred dance styles.
Dancing With The Stars Recap
First up on the dance floor and first to know they were safe was Drew Carey and Cheryl Burke dancing a jive. Drew certainly isn’t a natural in dancing shoes, but his effort is apparent to the judges. Len Goodman was pleased to see that Cheryl challenged her partner with a series of true Jive steps. Score: 21
The next safe couple to dance was Wonder Years’ Danica McKellar and Val Chmerkovskiy. Dancing the samba, the pair pushed the sexy angle to get the judges' attention – and to best rival Candice Cameron Bure. Bruno Tonioli says that she’s “beautiful to look at, but not quite tame yet,” while Carrie Ann Inaba said she “dominated.” Score: 24

Week two of "Dancing With the Stars" brought the season's first elimination, but two celebs were sent home instead of just one. Sent packing were two of last week's three lowest scorers: swimmer Diana Nyad and Henry Byalikov, and hockey player Sean Avery and Karina Smirnoff. Nyad earned a combined score of 18 from judges last week and ranked second in our users' predictions for elimination. Her ouster was revealed mid-show, but judges still gave her the chance to perform the cha-cha she had prepared for the evening. -Break- Avery's elimination was announced at the end of the show, after he received a respectable 21 from judges for his salsa, up from the 20 he earned last week. Our users' had ranked him third among stars likeliest to be eliminated. Our best bet for elimination -- 76-year-old "Star Wars" star Billy Dee Williams -- got a stay of execution thanks to support from fans.

Monday night's Dancing with the Stars kicked off with a selection of surprises.
Not only did contestants learn right at the beginning that there was a double elimination to take place during the show, but the leader board's lowest scorer Billy Dee Williams – whose face expressed fear of being sent home – was saved almost immediately, and went on to dance a 15-point tango with Emma Slater that judge Len Goodman said "didn't have enough attack."
Before getting to the unfortunate two who were forced to bid adieu, here's a recap of how the night went overall:

"Dancing with the Stars" Season 18 was pretty brutal in week 2 of the competition. Not only was there a double elimination -- which took out Diana Nyad and Henry Byalikov, then Sean Avery and Karina Smirnoff -- but the stars had to hear they were eliminated before getting a chance to dance a performance worked on for a week.
Were Diana and Sean even the right choices?
Related: All of the week 2 scores and dances.
In terms of actual dance abilities, the obvious pick for elimination would be Billy Dee Williams. He isn't dancing well, even with partner Emma Slater doing an impressive job of putting on a show. But who could eliminate Lando Calrissian in the first week? We might get more Ewoks, after all!
Who do you think should have gone home? Vote in the poll below!
Who should have gone home in 'DWTS' week 2?...

Dancing With the Stars has lost its first two stars. In the first elimination show of the season, the ABC reality hit pulled a double elimination: Diana Nyad, the world record-breaking swimmer, and former NHL star Sean Avery were the first celebrities to find themselves ousted from the ballroom on Monday, March 24. Kind of shocked that Star Wars' Billy Dee Williams managed to avoid elimination? Us, too! And in what we think is a kind of mean twist, Nyad was forced to perform the dances they had been rehearsing for all week immediately after learning they were eliminated from the competition. Avery, meanwhile, learned of his ousting after performing a salsa, which scored him 21 points. As...

"Dancing with the Stars" Season 18, week 2 double elimination: Scores and dances
In week 2 of "Dancing with the Stars" Season 18, the pressure hits for the first time -- two couple begin and dance through the show, already the victims of the first elimination. Here are all of the scores and dances for the March 24 episode.
Drew and Cheryl are declared safe at the beginning of the episode, before their dance.
Drew Carey and Cheryl Burke
Dancing the jive
Drew is very into this competition. He's far from the best competitor, but he may be the most committed to his performances.
Bruno: "You're so in tune with what the public wants!"
Scores: 7+7+7 = 21
Billy Dee and Emma are safe. (Apparently, this makes Diana Nyad angry) So are Meryl and Maks. Danica and Val also are in the safe club.
This must be awful for the remaining dancers.
Danica McKellar and Val Chmerkovskiy
Dancing the samba
Yellow.

Dancing With the Stars kicked off its 18th season Monday night, introducing the 12 new partnerships, Brooke Burke replacement Erin Andrews and a number of other changes designed to keep the dancing show fresh.
Dancing With The Stars Recap
First to hit the dance floor was Real Housewives of Atlanta star, actress and author NeNe Leakes and her pro partner Tony Dovolani. Leakes and Dovolani danced a cha cha in which the former’s vivacious personality was front and center. “You have so much to give; we’re just scratching the surface,” said judge Carrie Ann Inaba after the routine. Score: 21
Next up to make his Dancing With the Stars debut was Big Time Rush singer James Maslow. When he entered the rehearsal studio, he was met with a surprised Peeta Murgatroyd, with whom he appears to have gone on a date back in February. Dancing the foxtrot, the twosome showed...

Battling harsh weather conditions and wading through flooded streets, filmmaker Casey Neistat risked a lot to immortalize the devastation of Superstorm Sandy on camera.
But thanks to his efforts, Neistat has managed to not only bring a level of intimacy to this horrific disaster, but he has also used the powerful footage he captured to raise awareness and encourage relief efforts for survivors.

I was unable to even comprehend the magnitude of the storm, but mainly because I had the resources to get out there and capture it all, I went out with my camera."
