The documentary “Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution” is set to premiere globally on June 18 on Netflix. The film combines stand-up performances and talking head interviews, as well as archival materials featuring LGBTQ+ comedians, and includes Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bernhard, Wanda Sykes, Suzy Izzard, Hannah Gadsby, Tig Notaro, Rosie O’Donnell, Margaret Cho, Bob The Drag Queen and Trixie Mattel.
Historians interviewed for the documentary include Dave Holmes, Roger Mason, Shar Jossell, Susan Stryker and Kate Aurthur, Variety‘s Editor-at-Large.

Unlike a movie, a TV show is not generally meant to be consumed in a single sitting. It is, at least in theory, designed to be enjoyed episode by episode. So having already celebrated the best series of the year (and the best TV performances), we’re here now to highlight a few individual chapters that particularly stood out to us from our hundreds and hundreds of hours of viewing.
As a rule, we excluded any title that had already made either of our individual top 10s. (Sorry, Richie episode of The Bear. And “Long, Long Time” from The Last of Us. And half this season of Succession. Half this season of Reservation Dogs. And, and, and …) This was in part to save ourselves the trouble of singing praises we’ve already sung so many times before, but mostly in an effort to spread the love. For the same reasons,...

Stand-up comedian Kenny DeForest, who was a fixture of the Brooklyn comedy scene and appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Late Show with James Corden and the Pete Holmes-helmed HBO series Crashing, died on Wednesday, Dec. 13. He was 37.
On Friday, Dec. 8, DeForest was on a rented bicycle at the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Sterling Place in Prospect Park when he hit an unoccupied parked car, a New York City Police Department spokesperson told NBC News.
He was then taken to Kings County Hospital, where he underwent neurological surgery to remove a piece of his skull in order to relieve pressure from cranial bleeding.
Ryan Beck, a fellow comic and close friend of DeForest’s, organized a GoFundMe amid the late comedian’s hospitalization. In the most recent update, Beck noted that DeForest’s final moments “included some of his favorite songs, stories of his childhood,...

In the 31st century of Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's "Futurama," Christmas has evolved. Instead of fir trees, for instance, people decorate palm trees. Gift exchanges are still common, but families don't merely gather together to enjoy the warmth of the holiday season. They gather together because a rogue robotic Santa Claus, judging the entire world to be "naughty," annually flies around the Earth murdering anyone outdoors with guns and missiles. Families gather out of fear. Robot Santa was initially played by John Goodman, but the role was taken over by John Dimaggio after his first appearance.
Eventually joining Robot Santa in his holiday shenanigans was the Kwanzaa-Bot played by late rapper Coolio, and, with the release of "Bender's Big Score" in 2007, the Chanukah Zombie played by Mark Hamill. The machinations of the film's plot had all of Earth's denizens stranded at the North Pole of Neptune,...

More than 100 artists contributed to our “Our Frasier Remake,” a frame-by-frame redo of a 1994 episode of NBC sitcom “Frasier,” with the Seattle psychiatrist reimagined as a Lego figure, as Claymation and a dazzling array of other animation styles.
The trailer for the indie project, which follows similar projects “Our Robocop Remake and “Our Footloose Remake,” dropped on Wednesday. It will premiere on Oct. 11 in theaters in Los Angeles, Seattle and Austin, the day before the official reboot, which sees Kelsey Grammer returning to his Emmy-winning role, debuts on Paramount+
“Our Frasier Remake” redoes the Season 1 finale, with 185 uniquely animated segments: A different artist is responsible for each section, reimagining it in their own visual style.
Creator/director Jacob Reed said the episode is “a thinly veiled question about whether or not a spin-off of ‘Cheers’ called ‘Frasier’ was worth it.”

The chaotic adventures of Joker’s psychopathic girlfriend and partner in crime, Harley Quinn are set to come out soon, as the DC animated black comedy superhero show’s Season 4 is marked for a July release.
The last season of ‘Harley Quinn’ began going deeper into her newly branded romantic relationship with Poison Ivy. When the season ended, Harley joined the Bat-Family while Ivy was poised to lead the Legion of Doom. In a funny twist, Batgirl is now the head of the Bat-Family as Bruce Wayne ended up being arrested for tax evasion.
Talking about the upcoming season and Harley’s new heroic role in the show with TVLine, showrunner Justin Halpern said, quoted by Collider: “Things are so binary in the superhero world. Like, there’s a bad guy, there’s a good guy, and the feeling you have to be one of those things. There’s also the idea of,...

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) was the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2023 Best Character Voice-Over ballot consists of 148 performances, which is down by 74 from last year. Seeking her third victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).
Unlike the live action and fictional program nominees, which are chosen by all 20,000 plus academy members, the Best Character Voice-Over contenders are picked only by voters...

Woe betide anyone who stumbles across the Harley Quinn Valentine’s Day Special without any prior knowledge of the animated TV series, because it’s safe to say they’d be in for something of a shock. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special.”
“Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” is a lot like “When Harry Met Sally,” if “When Harry Met Sally” had prominently featured a demon who speaks in rhymes to sell sex pills or a sentient lump of clay who falls in love with his own ass.
Not every part of the special is that crass (even though most of it is): “Harley Quinn” showrunners Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern wanted to devise what Schumacker calls “a real mash-up of high-brow and low-brow, with the high-brow being Harley and Ivy’s genuine adoration of each other,” and the low-brow being … everything else.
Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) goes to dramatic lengths to plan the best Valentine’s Day of all time for Poison Ivy (Lake Bell), who just wants a quiet night in, and...

You may have heard that both HBO Max and DC’s film and television properties are in a state of major turmoil. Projects are being canceled even after they’ve completed production, other series are being dropped from the streamer altogether — the proper term for this is, I believe, “Zaslaving” — fictional universes are being revamped, and on and on. It’s a mess, though perhaps James Gunn can entangle the DC end of things.
Somehow, though, Harley Quinn has survived unscathed through all this mess. The animated series outlasted the...

This post includes spoilers for "Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special."
The "Harley Quinn" Valentine's Day special has everything: a "When Harry Met Sally"-style framing device featuring two stars from "Abbott Elementary," magical sexcapades between Harley (Kaley Cuoco) and Ivy (Lake Bell), a meet-cute at a Bdsm scene, and whatever the hell was going on with the two halves of Clayface (Alan Tudyk). But it also has something that made all of those things look like an average Tuesday in comparison: "Ted Lasso" star Brett Goldstein playing a sensual version of himself who becomes the object of super-sized Bane's (James Adomian) amorous desires.
Thanks to a report by Entertainment Weekly, we knew before this Valentine's Day special aired that Goldstein would pop up in the new "Harley Quinn" special, but fans may have expected a quick appearance akin to his post-credits role in "Thor: Love and Thunder.

Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special Trailer: Get Pumped For The 'Best V-d Ever'
It's Valentine's Day in Gotham City, which means love is in the air and people are going at it in the streets. "Harley Quinn" is back with a Valentine's Day special this year, and in typical Harley fashion, the holiday celebrations look to be as vulgar as they are adorable. HBO Max just dropped a trailer for the holiday special, and it includes a sneak peek at Ivy (Lake Bell) and Harley's (Kaley Cuoco) first "V-d" together, Darkseid's (Michael Ironside) "cold, dead" love story, and Bane's (James Adomian) quest to improve a certain part of his anatomy.
"Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special" appears to be jam-packed with stories of romance gone mostly awry, as Harley and Ivy's low-key date accidentally turns the whole city horny, but there's some cute stuff in here too. The Riddler (Jim Rash) seems to propose to Clock King (also Adomian), Batgirl (Briana Cuoco...
