Though their summer film series at Hollywood Forever Cemetery may be coming to a close, Cinespia still has a few surprises left up their sleeves for this fall. Presented by Amazon MGM Studios, the Los Angeles screening organization is proud to unveil their October line-up, which includes a 50th anniversary celebration of the original 1974 version of “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” (10/5), a 15th anniversary showing of “Coraline” (10/12), and “Trick ‘r Treat” (10/19). To close out the season, Cinespia will also be having an indoor Halloween screening of the original 1977 version of “Suspiria” from Dario Argento on October 31 at The Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.
“What better way to embrace the spooky season than by watching horror classics under the stars at a cemetery?” said John Wyatt, founder of Cinespia. “We’re also thrilled to return to The Orpheum for the second consecutive year, hosting our fans on Halloween night for...

Give us a D! Give us a U! Give us an N! Give us an S! Give us a T! What’s that spell? Dunst! Dunst! Dunst! Los Angeles was out in force this past Saturday night to celebrate the Academy Award nominated actress Kirsten Dunst and two of her films celebrating 25th anniversaries next year. Every year, Cinespia hosts a slumber party at their Hollywood Forever Cemetery summer screening series and this year’s pairing had the crowd jumping, flipping, and cheering with joy and ennui. Sponsored by Amazon MGM Studios, Cinespia was proud to present the 2000 films “Bring It On” and “The Virgin Suicides.” To add to the festivities, Dunst herself made a surprise appearance to kick off the evening.
“I’m Ta-Ta-Ta-Torrance — your captain Torrance! Let’s go Toros!” Dunst said, reciting her iconic cheer from “Bring It On” as she walked out to a raucous audience.

Kirsten Dunst partied like it’s 1999 as she crashed a sleepover this weekend for a double feature of two of her most beloved movies.
The Academy Award nominee surprised fans as she appeared at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Saturday for Cinespia‘s ‘Kirsten Dunst Slumber Party’, celebrating the 25th anniversaries of Bring It On and The Virgin Suicides.
“I’m T-t-Torrance, your captain Torrance,” she told the crowd, quoting her Bring It On intro. “Let’s go, Toros!
“Oh my god, you guys. This is the craziest thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life,” added Dunst. “I am so overwhelmed. My friends and family are here, I’m gonna watch with you guys. I haven’t seen any of these movies since I was a teen myself, with an audience. I’m so honored.”
She went on to thank Cinespia and founder John Wyatt before introducing the first film.

There’s nothing quite like cinema under the stars. The Los Angeles based screening org Cinespia understands that and for the last 22 years, founder John Wyatt and his team have been bringing people together for outdoor showings of classic films every summer at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Sponsored by Amazon & Wondery, this month and next features screenings of “D.E.B.S” for L.A. Pride, “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?,” “Rocky” on July 4th with fireworks, and many more, but this past Saturday’s presentation of the 2007 Beatles musical “Across the Universe” had an extra special treat for guests. Star Evan Rachel Wood was there to introduce the film via video message and offered some fascinating tidbits on making it and the struggle getting it released, as well as the impact it had on her life and career.

There are 19,000 members of the Television Academy who vote on the Primetime Emmy Awards. Here are just a few of Los Angeles locations where, over the last few months, they might have found their votes courted by networks and studios:
The Silver Lake Dog Park A fashion show at the Grove A popular 3rd Street lunch spot A pop-up screening room hosted in an Airstream trailer Election Day polling places A cemetery
In fact, since the beginning of Emmy campaign season (an ill-defined period of time) it’s been a circus of events and stunts meant to get voters’ attention. (In fact, there was a literal carnival, courtesy of Fox, for “Grease: Live.”) Looking at the calendar of an Academy member, there was hardly a single night in May and June that didn’t include at least one “For Your Consideration” event, and sometimes multiple ones clashed for attention.

A Tangled Web: D. Dominick Lombardi, Curator Causey Contemporary Through January 29, 2015
The group show is one of those things that can either be done well or becomes an exhibition overwhelmed by variety -- or worse, a clutter of objects that don’t relate to each other without the benefit of lengthy wall texts. D. Dominick Lombardi, a veteran New York curator, has managed to pull together a visually interesting exhibition at Causey Contemporary, which was based on the simple premise of pairing the artists represented by the gallery with an outside artist of Lombardi’s choosing whom he felt complemented the work. What results is a show that is short on theory and long on visuality. He has turned the exhibit into a kind of dance, with one wondering (without looking at the cheat sheet) which artists are waltzing with each other.
To paraphrase the ninth-century Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu,...

Several institutions have developed models for retinal implants--some companies, such as California-based Second Sight, have even started developing them commercially. But, while cochlear implants, for example, can impart fairly comprehensive hearing to deaf patients, the utility of the retinal implants available today is extremely limited. Plus, the surgical procedure required to implant the retinal devices is much more dangerous than the one for cochlear implants.
Yesterday, a collaborative research team led by engineers at MIT announced that they had developed an improved retinal implant model. So far, the device has only been tested in pigs, but the researchers expect to get Fda approval to test the implants in humans soon. Unlike some of the current models, which are physically attached to patients' eyeballs, MIT's retinal implant sits on the white of the eye, making it less invasive. Similar to Second Sight's implant, the MIT device receives input from glasses that contain built-in cameras,...
