Writer/director Brooke Berman has added Alysia Reiner (Captain Marvel), Joel De La Fuente (The Man in the High Castle) and April Matthis (New Amsterdam) to the cast of the new Yvonne Woods starring comedy Ramona at Midlife.
The dark comedy follows a single mother and former literary “It Girl” who discovers that her unflattering current reality is the subject of a hot filmmaker’s newest project. As Ramona faces up to her disappointments and wrecked friendships, she finds true creative power and is finally ready to become her best self. A comedy about who we are now.
Producer Kristen Vaganos says, “In her directorial debut, Brooke brings together a stellar cast of actors and long-time collaborators hailing from her 25-year long career in theater and film to tell this female-driven tale about who gets to tell whose story – and why it matters.”

Creative effects supervisor Erik Porn is a movie blood expert. His credits include “Teen Wolf” and “The Wretched.
When Porn starts making the blood for his films, his first step is purchasing methocel, a common slime ingredient seen covering Bill Murray’s character in “Ghostbusters.”
All it takes to make movie-level fake blood are ingredients found in the baking aisle. Porn uses corn syrup, red food coloring and cocoa powder to start. Blue and green food dyes are added to “give that deep brown look to your blood,” he says.
Porn also adds corn starch to the blood to thicken it and give it the appropriate consistency — and then it’s ready to be used. With completely edible ingredients, it can even be used as “mouth blood.”
Five pumps of hand soap can also be added to help the blood “stay on your hands a little bit better [so] it goes...

IFC’s horror movie “The Wretched” passed the $1 million mark after a month of drive-in movie theater buzz.
The indie film took in $162,000 at 95 sites over the weekend. After premiering at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival, it launched on May 1 at just 11 drive-ins, including the Mission Tiki in Montclair, Calif., where it had an informal premiere.
Written and directed by Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, “The Wretched” follows a young boy who discovers an evil witch in the nearby woods. The cast includes John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Zarah Mahler, Azie Tesfai and Jamison Jones.
“Anyone who at this point disputes or discounts the power of the big screen experience need only look at the stellar ongoing drive-in performance of IFC’s ‘The Wretched,'” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
Meanwhile, Quiver’s thriller “Becky” was at the top of the small but growing U.S. box office with $178,186 at 42 locations.

While his parents work out their divorce, Ben (John-Paul Howard) is spending the summer with his dad (Jamison Jones). When Dillon (Blane Crockarell), the kid next door who he’s been looking out for at his Dad’s marina, disappears and nobody else seems to remember him, Ben becomes convinced that Dillon’s mother Abbie (Zarah Mahler) is a witch.
Writing and directing team The Pierce Brothers throw plenty of ideas and sub-genres into The Wretched. There are folk horror elements and iconography at play, suggestions of possession, a marina set teen movie with Ben connecting with local girl Mallory (Piper Curda) and even a Rear Window/Disturbia influence as Ben spies on his neighbours after becoming suspicious of them. Unfortunately, the film often ends up playing as bitty as that list of influences reads.

An ancient witch preys on the women of a seaside resort in a laborious tale that pinches from Spielberg and Stephen King
The title has been applied blankly and pretty arbitrarily to a by-the-numbers, unscary movie from Us indie film-makers, the Pierce brothers, Drew and Brett. It was originally called Hag, which would have been better.
Ben (Jean-Paul Howard) is a troubled teenager who one summer goes to stay with his divorced dad, Liam (Jamison Jones), at a coastal resort; he’s been fixed up with a job at the marina that Liam manages. Ben starts to have feelings for smart, pretty Mallory (Piper Curda), who works there, but he also becomes obsessed with the weird family who live next door to his dad, especially the mom, Abbie (Zarah Mahler), who is behaving very strangely.

As cars lined up by the dozens to get into the Mission Tiki Drive-In before dusk on Friday night, the producer of one of the films showing at the four-screen outdoor venue was holding a clipboard, manning a guest list for cast and crew members who were driving across the L.A. County line to Montclair to celebrate the opening night of their very limited theatrical run. Like any movie that has bowed on the big screen in recent weeks, “The Wretched” is playing exclusively at what the trades used to call ozoners.
“I’ve been meaning to come out here for a long time, because a bunch of my filmmaker buds come out here,” said Chang Tseng, producer of the indie horror pic, which IFC released this weekend. “I haven’t been to a drive-in since I was 15.”

C’mon film fans. let’s shake off the stuck-at-home isolation blues with this week’s new release. Yup, it’s not an “indie” full of despair and drama. So, it’s a rollicking comedy? Well..uh uh. A toe-tappin’ musical, perhaps?, Nah…it’s a horror flick. Well. at least you can feel good that all the weirdness isn’t directed at you as you stare out the window. And this is indeed an independent film, another in the subgenre of “art-house” horror led by The Witch, The Babadook, and the very recent The Other Lamb, though, in spirit, it may be closest to the retro thrills of It Follows. This one owes a lot to that 70s homage, though it has more of the 1980’s thriller vibe of the Netflix hit “Stranger Things”. So with all the real-world scares outside can The Wretched deliver the shivers?

"Listen to mommy!" IFC Midnight has debuted an official trailer for a frightening indie horror thriller titled The Wretched, which is arriving on VOD at the start of May in just a few more weeks. This premiered at Fantasia and FrightFest last year, and played at a bunch of other fests including Monsterfest Melbourne and Toronto After Dark. Chilling and suspenseful, The Wretched offers a "modern update to the retro young hero’s mission like that of The Goonies," and promises to make all viewers wary of every dark corner they encounter after witnessing its terrifying tale. A defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parent's imminent divorce, faces off with a thousand year-old witch, who is living beneath the skin of and posing as the woman next door. Starring John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Jamison Jones, Zarah Mahler, Kevin Bigley, and Blane Crockarell. Uhhh this looks seriously scary as hell! This witch ain't messing around.

Based on the Boo Hag, a witch has come to town and protagonist Ben (John-Paul Howard) has some strange, new neighbours. It’s clear, even just from The Wretched’s opening scenes, that the Pierce Brothers (Brett and Drew) have produced a film full of impeccable imagery. As neglected children’s toys lay scattered on the ground in the pouring rain, it ties to the gruesome reality of the town in which the film is set. There’s an evil lurking in the shadows ready to feast on the innocent. Straight away, the directors aren’t shy in giving a little tease of the horrors to come, as we see a woman with a child in her arms as the sound of teeth penetrating flesh and crushing bone ring in the ears. These are sounds that permeate The Wretched, a film that is bound to send shivers up your spine.
As Ben, John-Paul Howard delivers a performance in The Wretched that effectively portrays the struggle to cope with a parental divorce that looms ahead.

A witch that feeds on forgotten children has taken hold of a sleepy lakeside village in Michigan. It’s because its victims are “forgotten,” however, that nobody ever seems to notice. Not only do the adults assist it by either providing themselves as vessel (it steps into the skin of women) or servant (men are turned to drones with a whisper), they have no reason to fight back since what they would be fighting for no longer exists to them. Maybe this “dark mother” will infiltrate a target’s home and steal away control from within or perhaps it will lure in unsuspecting bystanders who still remember and thus have become liabilities. We can never know how long it’s been happening and ultimately must assume it’s never stopped.
As a result, writers/directors Brett and Drew T. Pierce don’t have to pretend this supernatural creature isn’t real.

Mick Garris, Joe Dante and David Slade are among the horror directors contributing to Nightmare Cinema, an entertaining anthology in the spirit of Garris’ Masters of Horror TV show. The stories themselves have a surprisingly high hit rate, but the film is let down by its poorly thought-out linking concept. The set-up is almost too simple, taking the title entirely literally. When random people walk past the well-lit-but-seemingly-abandoned Rialto cinema, they see their name appear on the marquee. Intrigued, they enter the cinema, where a creepy projectionist (Mickey Rourke as The Projectionist) shows them a film that features their death.

Writer, producer, director and horror mega-fan Mick Garris assembles a cadre of like minds to create “Nightmare Cinema.” This anthology feature is basically a two-hour, big-screen version of the several macabre TV anthology series he’s been involved with since the mid-’80s “Amazing Stories.” Comprising five directors’ tales linked by the inimitable Mickey Rourke as a diabolical projectionist, this feature falls short of Garris’ greatest effort in that vein: His all-star 2005-07 cable pet project “Masters of Horror.” Each segment here has strengths and weaknesses. If there are no outright duds, there’s no real triumph either. But the whole is certainly diverse, lively and reference-packed enough to please horror fans attracted to this kind of enterprise, which are so often (see last year’s “Tales From the Hood 2”) so, so much worse. Cranked Up Films is releasing to 25 U.S. screens and on demand June 21.

I enjoy a good horror anthology series and we’ve got a trailer for a new one coming called Nightmare Cinema, which looks like it will be filled with a lot of creepy fun! This is something that I know I’ll enjoy watching!
The five segments featured in Nightmare Cinema were directed by Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade (30 Days of Night), Ryuhei Kitamura and Alejandro Brugues (Juan of the Dead).
Here’s the synopsis that was shared for it:
A series of down-on-their-luck individuals enter the decrepit and spine-chilling Rialto theater, only to have their deepest and darkest fears brought to life on the silver screen by The Projectionist – a mysterious, ghostly figure who holds the nightmarish futures of all who attend his screenings. By the time our patrons realize the truth, escape is no longer an option. For once the ticket is torn, their fate is sealed at Nightmare Cinema.

Stars: Mickey Rourke, Sarah Withers, Faly Rakotohavana, Maurice Benard, Elizabeth Reaser, Zarah Mahler, Mark Grossman, Eric Nelsen, Richard Chamberlain, Adam Godley, Annabeth Gish | Written by Lawrence C. Connolly, David Slade, Alejandro Brugués, Richard Christian Matheson, Sandra Becerril, Mick Garris | Directed by Mick Garris, Alejandro Brugues, Joe Dante, Ryuhei Kitamura, David Slade

For Nightmare Cinema, five Masters of Horror have assembled to immerse fans in five tales of terror, all told within the confines of a haunted movie theatre inhabited by The Projectionist (Mickey Rourke), a mysterious entity who oversees the facility, showing those who dare enter its doors their deepest fears and darkest secrets. Nightmare Cinema directors include Mick Garris, Joe Dante, David Slade, Alejandro Brugués, and Ryûhei Kitamura, and it features performances from the likes of Richard Chamberlain, Elizabeth Reaser, Belinda Balaski, Patrick Wilson, and Annabeth Gish, to name a few.
The wraparound segment in Nightmare Cinema is called “The Projectionist,” and it acts as the glue that brings all these different stories and cinematic visions together through the Rialto Theatre. Garris provides his directorial expertise for these various interstitial segments, and he sets a nice, eerie tone for all the stories to come. Rourke pops in for a few of the wraparound scenes,...

To conclude its sixth and final season, TNT’s Major Crimes on Tuesday night brought back Phillip Stroh in full force, forcing the freshly and dearly departed Commander Raydor’s team into a battle of wits, all while emotionally taxed.

Surveying a TNT landscape that in recent weeks saw Dallas and other dramas fall by the wayside, Major Crimes creator James Duff does not take for granted the fact that The Closer‘s spin-off thus far has reaped relatively easy renewals.
“We’ve been incredibly lucky,” Duff told TVLine during a Q&a previewing the crime drama’s upcoming winter run. “Believe me when I say that we are all very aware of the rarified air in which we exist at the moment” – especially with former Fox boss Kevin Reilly about to take the reins at the cable network.

Director Joseph Albanese has come up with something sinister in his independent horror short Clemency. The independent horror review site Horror Society states of Clemency in a review "a tale of such intensity" (Horror). This tale is eighteen minutes long and introduces the "sadistic killer" Aruthur Poe to audiences, who receives a reprieve from prison after a Governor's intervention (Clemency). Shown at dozens of film festivals, Clemency's next stop is the Rainier Independent Film Festival in Washington State and from early reviews this is one show not to be missed!
The synopsis for Clemency here:
"Arthur Poe (Cris D’Annunzio) is a sadistic killer who likes to torture his victims. In 1993, he was captured and subsequently convicted by the state of Virginia for several gruesome murders. Poe received a sentence of death. Years later and days before his execution, the newly elected governor granted Poe clemency based on a...
