For four straight years now, After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For has been unleashed. Eight original horror films to quench your thirst for blood and gore and screams galore. Last year I was able to check out and review their third collection of horrors (Read: DVD Review: After Dark Horrorfest III: 8 Films To Die For), and was rather excited to check out their new slate this year! Instead of cramming every review into one mammoth review, this year we'll take it one flick at a time, with this little opener stuck at the top of each one.
Within the realms of the horror genre, some of the scariest movies are those that are set in reality. Movies that involve situations and people that you could brush shoulders with every single day,...

Chicago – We’ve spent the last few weeks working our way through the fourth collection of the series subtitled “8 Films to Die For” and found a few highlights and lowlights of the fourth annual “After Dark Horrorfest” that we would are now unafraid to share. With two entries that are much more accomplished than last year’s thoroughly mediocre octet, this year featured some quality and some, well, not-so-quality. Let us break it down from best to worst.

Now in it's fourth year, Horrorfest, the annual cinematic showcase for After Dark Films, has established something of a reputation as a platform for fresh, daring filmmakers to get themselves noticed. More than just a simple market for nasties, the After Dark label stands for quality by way of authenticity, delivering horror films by genre lovers for genre lovers. In addition to this yearly frightfest, After Dark recently announced a new venture to develop their own projects, in partnership with SyFy, NBC, and Lionsgate, titled After Dark Originals. Aiming to do for horror what the Sundance Institute did for the American indie, the eight slate series will begin production next month with a view towards theatrical release later this fall.
Titles featured in this year's Horrorfest include:
The Reeds
Starring: Anna Brewster, O-t Fagbenle, Will Mellor, Danny Caltagirone, Scarlett Johnson, Emma Catherwood, Geoff Bell

English novelist, filmmaker and visual artist Clive Barker deserves the right to be hailed a bona fide icon of horror and fantasy, having conceived the Hellraiser and Candyman series, written and directed such films as Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions, and literally fleshed out his oeuvre in mediums as disparate as video games, opera and Halloween costumes.
Produced by Barker and adapted from a short story from his Books of Blood collection, writer-director Anthony Diblasi's new thriller Dread (a headliner in the 4th annual After Dark Horrorfest, and out this week on DVD) explores a psychological curiosity: are we better off confronting our traumas, or is repression a healthy form of self-preservation? While making a doc about what others fear, college students Stephen (Jackson Rathbone) and Cheryl (Hanne Steen) get sucked into a more dangerous project when their creative partner Quaid (Shaun Evans)—who witnessed his own parents brutally...

On balance, the entries in the 2010 Horrorfest were not quite as good as the past couple of years, but Dread stood out as the best. Based on a short story by horror author Clive Barker, Dread contains all the evil, horror and splatter we have come to expect from adaptations of his work, but it’s not really a horror movie in the traditional sense. Dread walks a fine line between a psychological thriller and a visceral horror film. It’s solid and engaging with an interesting premise that leads to a gut-wrenching conclusion that might just turn even the most jaded viewer into a vegetarian.
Dread is the tale of two college students, Quaid (Shaun Evans) and Steve (Jackson Rathbone) who team up to create a documentary about the innermost fears of their fellow students for a class project. With the help of Abby (Laura Donnely), they put out...

The 2009 Twilight fever hit hard this fall and left many victims behind; however, it seems that the fever has passed, and like the bears, the Twilight (2008) fans have gone into hibernation. Mid-January, major news hit the Twilight world, but so many fans were in hibernation, few got fired up when they heard The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) DVD release date was slated for March 20, 2010. Twilight fever began last August, when the cast and the crew returned to Vancouver to film The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010). The constant news, rumors, and celebrity spotting didn't let up until well after the November 20th, 2009 premiere. With New Moon gone from many theaters, Twilight fans have had no choice but to curl up for the long winter and wait patiently for the symptoms of the fever to resurface. While the vampires and werewolves prepare for the battle of a lifetime in Eclipse, fans are treated...

It’s one of the more complicated scenes to capture in the new Clive Barker film Dread. Actors Jackson (Twilight) Rathbone and Hanne Steen must play slightly drunk while getting hot and heavy during a romantic date in the countryside. At one point, they climb onto the hood of their car and release back into the wild a once-injured crow Rathbone’s character has rescued. Except the crow isn’t playing ball.
Director of photography Sam McCurdy (of the Descent duo) is perched on a crane, ready to move upward with the bird as it hopefully flies toward the camera. The crow wrangler has assured everyone this will happen. But it persistently doesn’t, and continually resetting the shot is getting very time-consuming and patience-testing—especially as writer/director Anthony Diblasi only has 28 days to shoot this adaptation of Barker’s acclaimed Books Of Blood short story during a cold November.

Anthony Diblasi’s Clive Barker’s Dread has a fascinating premise: it centers on a group of college students who engage in a project on fear, interviewing subjects who delve into their very worst fears in great detail and with transparent emotional vulnerability. The film, however, spends very little time on its central premise, focusing more on the changing relationships between the characters as the story progresses. This would be fine, however, if Dread contained a full cast of compelling characters. Unfortunately, the film tries to sustain itself on the weight of its weakest aspect. Based on one of Barker’s short stories, "Dread" (which has gone by either the single-name title or as titled with Barker’s ownership) concerns loner film student Stephen Grace (Jackson Rathbone) convinced by eccentric philosophy student Quaid (Shaun Evans), who is obsessed with the topic of fear and its causes, to engage in the previously mentioned project with Stephen’s collaborator...

Clive Barker's Books of Blood is a masterpiece of horror writing, an extensive collection of short, sharp, intelligent and above all scary stories that have already given us the classic horror film Candyman. The author himself wrote and directed Hellraiser, one of the best horror films of the eighties. His work comes with some pedigree then, and the promise of another adaptation from the Books of Blood, in this case Dread, one of few stories in the collection to follow a thriller rather than fantasy format, was a tantalising one. But director Anthony Diblasi struggles to make the story work on the big screen, confounded by the brevity and simplicity that makes it work so well on the page.

After taking a never-ending train ride from Croton-on-the-Hudson, NY, my buddy and I finally arrived in Montreal, rushed back to his place via the metro to drop off our bags at his apartment and sped off to Théàtre Hall Concordia just in time to catch Fantasia’s 9:45 p.m. screening of Dread, the latest film adaptation from Clive Barker’s Books Of Blood. Coincidentally, I had just recently reread my three-volume American collection of Barker’s excellent and groundbreaking short stories, and so I entered the theater with “Dread” fresh in my mind.

The first full week of Fantasia kicked off with two highly anticipated Clive Barker adaptations, Book of Blood, directed by John Harrison, and Dread, directed by Anthony Diblasi.
Both directors were on hand for their packed screenings and afterward answered questions both from the crowd and from Fantasia programmer and Fangoria editor Tony Timpone. As reported earlier, we learned during the Q&A that John Harrison has been tapped to direct a mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell. Given how faithful his interpretation of Book of Blood (review here) turned out to be, Harrison’s not likely to phone this one in!

Last summer's Montreal cinephiles were treated to the world premiere of Clive Barker's Midnight Meat Train at the Fantasia Film Festival. This July Fantasia will follow up on this by launching the hotly anticipated adaptations of the celebrated author's work: Anthony Diblasi's Dread (World Premiere), and John Harrison's Book Of Blood (North American Premiere). If that's not enough, both filmmakers will be in town to host their respective screenings. Book Of Blood UK Dir: John Harrison "The dead pass on their stories carved in flesh to our world". This decidedly adult Clive Barker adaptation merges two short stories from the author's groundbreaking Books Of Blood collection - On Jerusalem Street and The Book Of Blood - into a single feature-length narrative. Regular George A. Romero collaborator, occasional composer of immortal film scores (Day Of The Dead, Creepshow and Tales From The Darkside), John Harrison brings big screen life to Barker's morbid,...

So, the new Clive Barker movie Dread? It’s good. It’s definitely worth checking out. For those of you who missed The Midnight Meat Train because of its short stint in the theaters due to some unlucky studio politics can bask in the glory of Anthony Diblasi’s adaptation of Barker’s short story of the same title – Dread is a seriously effed up and intelligent film with some impressive direction by newcomer Diblasi. With a cohesive directing style that evidently took into consideration the preservation of the tone of the original story and the artistic expressiveness possible in editing, it’s technically impressive and manages to not insult the audience’s intelligence. Dread isn’t a stupid horror film for teenagers. In fact, this is probably way too intense for Twilighters and Predators-ers…...
