For those unfamiliar with Tubi, they are a completely free streaming service which has an absolutely ridiculous selection of films, many of which offered in high quality high-definition transfers. For those not in the know, they are also one of the services that pays filmmakers the best and are very open to smaller budget films. They do present the films with ads, but that is a small price to pay for a great selection of fun films. Scrolling their offerings by genre is also the closest one can get to the video store experience of yesteryears. Here’s a list of five fun action movies on Tubi, kind of like a “Staff Suggestions” section at your local Mom & Pop video store.

The lackluster reception of Yûji Shimomura’s Crazy Samurai Musashi at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival suggests that what sounded great on paper failed spectacularly in execution. Marketed with the tagline “400 vs. 1 in a single take,” the film commits to its premise with gusto: a brief intro and outro aside, the bulk of the runtime comprises a showdown between Japanese folk icon Miyamoto Musashi (Tak Sakaguchi) and an army of mercenaries and samurai, all filmed using a single unbroken shot. Save for a couple moments in which cuts may have been artfully masked, the one-take effect is, for better or worse, staunchly sustained for upwards of 70 (!) minutes (00:08:27-01:23:10 in the film). Given that narrative immersion tends to remain a priority even for the most action-oriented films, Crazy Samurai Musashi registers on some level as a grand failure, dissipating the “magic” of storytelling through a scarcity...

After an announcement video and a follow up teaser showing some behind the scenes work, we finally have some proper footage of Versus star Sakaguchi Tak's reunion with his Death Trance director Shimomura Yuji in the form of the first proper teaser for upcoming Japanese action film Re:Born. The fight choreography here is all based around fight choreographer Inagawa Yoshitaka's zero range combat system and it looks plenty kinetic to keep the action fans happy. This is very much just a teaser and to these eyes it looks as though the footage is still raw and unfinished - so I'd expect a boost in picture quality as things get through color correction, etc, in post - but still quite promising. Check it out below....

South Korea’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan), Asia’s largest genre film fest, has announced 21 titles from 12 countries to be presented during the Network of Asian Fantastic Films (Naff) genre film project market.
Dubbed It Project, the market has in past years showcased films such as Arvin Chen’s Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? and Lisa Takeba’s Haruko’s Paranormal Laboratory, which have screened at festivals including Tribeca, Berlin and Rotterdam.
Naff will run July 19-22 during BiFan, which will run July 16-26. Previously known as PiFan, the fest changed its name earlier this year in belated accordance with the current system of Romanizing Korean names. Thus it now uses ‘Bucheon’ instead of ‘Puchon’ to indicate the pronunciation of the name of the satellite city of Seoul that hosts this fest.
Aside from arranging business meetings, Naff will hand out post-production awards and a total of KW66m ($59,300) in cash prizes.

Sakaguchi's comeback comes with the appropriately titled Re:Born, a film that will reunite him with his Death Trance director and frequent fight choreographer / collaborator Shimomura Yuji. Scheduled for production in 2015 no plot details have been released thus far but Sakaguchi will be auditioning actors and fighters for the project in mid August and has just released the video below to spread the word. While much of Sakaguchi's work has been in the ultra low budget realm where he doesn't get to really compete...
