I find it so hard to get into a movie where every character is a despicable monster. '12 Hour Shift' has this problem. I think we are asked to side with the lead character 'Mandy', but when you stop and think about it, why should we? She's a terrible person. Is she less terrible than all the other characters in the movie? Maybe. But that still isn't something that's fun to root for. And it takes away all the stakes from the movie. If I don't like any of the characters, why should I care what happens to them?
The film has a lot going on and does its best to ensure we are never bored. It is also very short at only 87 minutes. It knows not to outstay and its welcome and that is a relief. I'm not quite sure exactly what they were going for in this one. Were they going for extremely dark humour? That'd be my guess, and it is occasionally funny, but not enough to work on its own. The problem with the horror/thriller side of things is that its way too over the top and unrealistic to be taken seriously.
I wanted to get into '12 Hour Shift' but I just couldn't find a way to hook myself in. It's not a bad film. It's passable as a quick little horror flick, but I do suspect it will be forgotten pretty quickly. 6/10.
