Jeff Tweedy never meant to be a memoirist. “I was kind of recruited to write a book based on some agent’s idea that I might be able to write something worth reading,” he says, recalling a conversation five or more years ago. “I said, ‘Sure, I guess.’ It felt accidental.” That somewhat inauspicious beginning led to Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back), the acclaimed memoir that Tweedy published in 2018. A couple of years later, he wrote a second bestseller, How to Write One Song, encouraging readers to tap into their own creativity.

Michelle Shocked, folk singer and performance artist, released an11-track LP of silent songs, titled Inaudible Women.
Inaudible Women
Shocked, already a controversial artist among critics and fans alike, named each track after a different music industry heavyweights, namely those working in digital music distribution. Each name/title is followed by their place of work. For example, track 6 is named “Chris Harrison (Pandora),” track 8 is titled “David Drummond (Google, YouTube).” Shocked is selling the album for $9.99 in the hopes of raising funds for her next tour.
Each song is around one minute long, and, in a video promoting her new album, Shocked claims that they do, in fact, contain sound. However, the sound is only audible to dogs.
“I decided that I was going to make a high album – in fact, the highest album ever made, just so that my friends Spot and Rex can hear it, not audible to human ears.

Margaret Cho has been a killer standup presence for over two decades, and today on her 45th birthday, allow us to highlight all of the qualities that make her a living legend, a dependable source of progressive thought, and the kind of performer who has never, ever shied away from discussing gay issues in her act. I’ve ranked my favorite Cho things, and the good news is there are tons more to choose from.
10. Her reconciliation with her sexuality: “I had this whole thing: Am I gay? Am I straight? Then I realized: I’m just slutty.”
9. She’s been hilarious since the second she set foot onstage.
8. Her activism and blogging, particularly her piece about the weird homophobia of Michelle Shocked.
“When someone like Michelle Shocked, formerly a beloved, alt queer muse and maker of the ’90s, decides that it is Ok to hate us and lets us know that God does too,...

How upsetting! A mother claimed that her son was harassed and attacked in a local Walmart for wearing a pink headband, and now she’s been hospitalized for stress after being inundated with thousands of threats. Kathleen blogged about her experience, but received threatening messages and emails when she made the encounter public.
Kathleen Carpenter, 31, who blogs under the name Katie Vyktoria, shared her experience with her readers on her blog, AMotherThing. The site has been temporarily taken down due to an onslaught of harsh threats! In her post, Katie explained an altercation that she claims took place in her local Clermont, Florida Walmart, where her two-year-old son Dexter was physically and verbally attacked by an unidentified man, who screamed gay slurs at the young boy for wearing a pink headband.

Michelle Shocked tries to make sense of the furor surrounding her perceived antigay speech. She doesn’t succeed.
Sadly, Michelle Shocked might be crazy enough that it’s actually Ok to listen to her music again. I mean, can any of us be held responsible if we sincerely lose the ability to think straight and make sense? All I know is “On the Greener Side” is a kickass song and I miss it, and now I’m justifying the decision to listen to it after reading the cryptically antigay Shocked‘s latest interview with The Advocate, which took place over Twitter, at Shocked’s insistence. Oh, boy.
Interviewer Matthew Breem tries his damnedest to get a clear answer from the 51-year-old singer, but she keeps throwing curveballs. In fact, she basically doesn’t answer his questions and starts asking about whether Breem is on The Advocate’s “full time staff...

No, Houston megachurch pastor Joel Osteen is not leaving the Christian faith — despite all “evidence” to the contrary.
The Internet was captivated yesterday by a message — supposedly posted by Osteen himself — in which the televangelist apparently claimed to be renouncing his religion. “Deep down in my heart, for a number of years now, I have been questioning the faith, Christianity, and whether Jesus Christ is really my, or anyone’s, ‘savior’,” the “press release” read in part. “I believe now that the Bible is a fallible, flawed, highly inconsistent history book that has been altered hundreds of times. Arrow this week decided to change things up and have the person to die in the first thirty seconds not be a victim of the Hood. Instead, it's some poor woman hopped up drugs that make her want to go and play in traffic.

Michelle Shocked’s rambling, quasi-coherent appearance on Piers Morgan Tonight this Monday wasn’t nearly as, well, shocking as Alex Jones’s — but it did inspire nearly as many furrowed brows.
The born-again alt-folk singer stopped by the show in order to apologize for and clarify anti-gay remarks she made at a concert March 17. (A sample: “When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back… You can go on Twitter and say, ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates f—s.’”) While Shocked began by unequivocally admitting that she “made a mistake,...

You would think that by now, Michelle Shocked knows how to choose her words. In an attempt to clear her name after stirring up controversy from an anti-gay rant she gave during a concert in San Francisco, the folk singer appeared on Piers Morgan Live for her first national interview since the incident to give her side of the story. But it didn't really help her cause. "I admit I made a mistake, Piers," she began, which was a good start. And this happened... "If I had the chance to go back and do it again, I don't think I would've taken the audience up on their choice. I had presented an entire performance and I framed it as truth and then I came back out for...

When we last saw Michelle Shocked, she was outside a venue that had canceled her gig, playing protest songs with a sack over her head. It was really the lowest point in what has been a series of low points that have come after Shocked went off on an anti-gay rant at a show in San Francisco. Last night, however, in her first live interview since it happened, she seemed the most clearheaded she's been. Talking on Piers Morgan Live, she apologized. As you can see below, she said she supported gay marriage and the Lgbt community. Things kind of break down toward the end, when she won't let Morgan send to commercial and she brings up her truth-versus-reality thing again. Based on the tone of her tweets and many retweets, Shocked didn't love the experience; however, at least things seem to be going in a positive direction.

My feelings about folk rocker Michelle Shocked's homophobic rant, in which she announced she "hates fags," are... layered?
I hated the awful things she said at her March 17 gig at Yoshi's in San Francisco, even though -- frankly -- I really don't understand what she said, and I suspected there was a mental illness issue at play.
I also didn't like that her horrible speech was dismissed simply because she's not famous anymore, because at one point Michelle Shocked was a cool and smart folk artist who beat the odds and emerged a mainstream star. (She was once nominated for Best Female Video against "Vogue" and "Nothing Compares 2 U" at the 1990 MTV Music Video Awards for "On The Greener Side.")
Well, Shocked just attempted to redeem herself with Piers Morgan, but I can't claim she was successful. She begins with what seems like an apology, then worms into a bizarre line of reasoning.

Alternative musician Michelle Shocked went on the defensive and claimed her recent anti-gay rant onstage was just an interpretation of "reality."
Shocked made headlines after the bizarre incident, which took place during a show in San Francisco, Calif., on March 17. The tirade included references to preachers getting "held at gunpoint and forced to marry homosexuals." Shocked even said, "God hates fags." The audience walked out and demanded refunds.
Shocked was scheduled to tour at venues across the West Coast, but many were cancelled following her rant in San Francisco. Most recently, Shocked staged a sit-in in Santa Cruz to protest a cancellation. She wore a ski mask, sunglasses and duct tape across her mouth scrawled with the words "Silenced By Fear."
On Monday, the 51-year-old born-again Christian sat down with Piers Morgan on CNN and defended herself. But even CNN questioned Shocked's lucidity, describing her appearance as "a rambling, and confusing interview,...

It was Piers Morgan who landed Michelle Shocked for a broadcast interview (set to take place live tonight at 9 p.m. Et). But it was Howard Stern who might have wanted her most. “Sounds like someone on the verge of a nervous breakdown,” Stern said March 25 as he played bizarre excerpts from a recording of the embattled folk-rock singer’s gay-themed meltdown on a San Francisco stage. “She’s a weirdo. Anyone who read her rambling, off-kilter Spin interview already knows this, but it appears that Michelle Shocked may be a little bit crazy. The recently shunned singer staged a sit-in Thursday night outside one of the many venues that cancelled her show, after the folk singer went off on a strange homophobic tangent at a San Francisco club earlier this month. In the wake of her anti-gay marriage rant at a San Francisco show, nearly a dozen venues have canceled artist Michelle Shocked's scheduled performances. As a sign of protest, Shocked appeared at the Santa Cruz nightclub where she was supposed to perform -- with tape across her mouth, according to the AP.
The tape read "Silenced By Fear" and Shocked refused to answer questions as she sat outside Moe's Alley, strumming her guitar. She had with her a Sharpie marker and a sign that asked people to write on the white safety suit she was wearing.
Moe's Alley owner Bill Welch tells the AP, "We will not be bashing Michelle Shocked. Rather we will celebrate music, diversity and send some healing Santa Cruz energy her way."
Earlier int he day, Shocked tweeted about her plans to sit outside Moe's, writing, "Its an art project 'My Summer Vacation' I want your autograph.

It's been almost two weeks since Michelle Shocked's infamous anti-gay rant. After some erratic behavior, including a bizarre interview and a bizarrely skipped interview, there's been radio silence. That changed yesterday when she tweeted: "Moe's in S Cruz tonight ok? Its an art project 'My Summer Vacation'". It appears, Shocked showed up at the venue she would've been performing at, if they hadn't canceled after her rant. Wearing all white, including a white sack she cut a hole in and put tape over the mouth, she played guitar and communicated to people on an Etch-a-Sketch. It was meant to be a protest. Watch videos of her below. It's clear that things are getting worse, and we hope she finds help and/or peace.

The indie-folk singer whose U.S. tour was canceled after she launched into an anti-gay tirade onstage is raising eyebrows yet again.
The Associated Press reports that Michelle Shocked appeared outside Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz, Calif. on March 28, wearing in a white disposable safety suit with her face covered and mouth taped shut. The tape slapped across her lips read "Silenced By Fear," according to the report.
Shocked apparently did not speak or sing at the sit-in, but nonetheless strummed her guitar and invited passers-by to write on the safety suit with a black Sharpie.
Moe's Alley was one of several venues to quickly pull the plug on a scheduled Shocked performance after the singer's anti-gay gaffe; her entire U.S. tour has reportedly since been canceled. But earlier that day, the 51-year-old Shocked hinted at plans to appear at the venue on Twitter despite the cancellation:

Good morning! Tgif!
If you're wondering why someone Lgbt on your Facebook is against marriage, maybe this Salon piece will help explain them to you. Out lesbian law professor Nancy Polikoff explains her reasoning:
My critique of marriage stems from the 1970s. As gay people began talking about this more, there were these questions about using the resources of fledgling legal groups on marriage. There was a significant contingent of people who identified as feminists who said, “This is the wrong approach, this isn’t what we should be doing.” That viewpoint carried the day for a long time. My point of view dates back to long before where we are now.
An interesting perspective! But on the other side of the coin, if you stand with Edith Windsor in her case against Doma, check out this site and add your name.

Michelle Shocked, the alternative folk singer who announced at a San Francisco gig that "God hates faggots" (Or not? She apologized? Whatever), probably hasn't gained any new fans in the past week. Still, I think her strange case warrants real attention. In today's Weeklings!, I discuss why Michelle Shocked's awful opinion matters more to me than, say, the opinion of most current Billboard hitmakers. Then for the hell of it, I talk about how other female singer-songwriters have hurt my feelings too, though not in as extreme ways. Annie Lennox, I'm taking you down, girl.

This past Sunday, at a performance in San Francisco, singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked gave what many have called a homophobic speech. (You can hear it in its entirety here.) Finally, after days of cryptic retweets and an equally cryptic statement, an actual interview with Shocked has come out. Conducted the day after the events, it's as ridiculous as you'd expect. As the writer for Spin describes, he spoke with Shocked for 45 minutes, until she realized he had been tape-recording the conversation. She then made him delete the file and they started all over again. This second 45-minute exchange is, not surprisingly, real nuts. This past Sunday, at a performance, folk singer Michelle Shocked went on a rant that many are calling anti-gay. You can listen to the whole very-all-over-the-place thing here. Since then, her statement and tweets have been fairly cryptic and very odd. She was supposed to appear on the Internet radio show "Radio or Not" this morning to clarify what happened. So when it was time for her phone interview, the call went straight to voice mail. The host, Nicole Sandler, observed that Shocked had obviously been listening to the live stream, since she was tweeting about it. So after a few unanswered phone calls, Shocked tweeted: "I'll be here on Twitter right here." What followed was a full-on Twitter battle, in which Shocked was basically heckling Sandler via Twitter and Sandler occasionally responded while continuing to host her show. Here are some choices tweets: Here is the radio show: Obviously...

No one's going to be forgetting Michelle Shocked's anti-gay tirade anytime soon, especially not now that the audio has been released. In the damning clip (provided by the San Francisco Bay Guardian Online), the self-proclaimed born-again Christian tells the crowd, "Once Prop 8 gets instated and once preachers are held at gunpoint and forced to marry the homosexuals, I'm pretty sure that that will be the signal for Jesus to come on back." "You said you wanted reality," she continued. "If someone would be so gracious as to tweet out that Michelle Shocked just said from stage, 'God hates faggots.' Would you do it now?" (Former) fans of Shocked questioned her as she...

Matt Bomer says it was fantastic to get to film the finale of White Collar on the top of the Empire State building, but there are limits. "That was a dream come true — looking over all of Manhattan and Brooklyn was unbelievable. At 5 in the morning it was brilliant; by 3 in the afternoon I was done. I’m not terribly acrophobic, but after about 10 hours up there, I was definitely ready to come down.”
Michelle Shocked has released an apology of sorts for her "God Hates Fags" rant, but mostly says everybody misunderstood what she meant. "I don't always express myself as clearly as I should. More than three days after her potentially career-crippling run-in with a deeply offended audience in San Francisco, folk singer Michelle Shocked finally got around to issuing a public apology Wednesday, saying, “I don’t always express myself as clearly as I should,” and affirming her commitment to gay rights in the wake of her allegedly homophobic comments. But the timing may not have been ideal, as within hours of her pro-gay statement reaching the media, an audio recording of her contentious San Francisco performance swept the web. And many following the controversy felt that the incendiary content

Michelle Shocked has responded with two open letters regarding reports of her anti-gay comments she made from the stage at San Francisco club Yoshi’s on Sunday night. In the wake of her comments (the audio is below), she apologizes for what fans “think they’ve heard.” She says she’s speaking for others below, but when she starts to talk about her faith and Jesus, she says. “I was in a prayer meeting yesterday. A few days after reportedly ranting against gays at her show in San Francisco, and after losing a whole bunch of work, folk singer Michelle Shocked sent a statement to Kqed, Northern California’s public radio station. Besides saying she’s “damn sorry,” it argues her comments were taken out of context. She wasn’t saying that “God hates homosexuals,” but that “some of His followers believe that.” Later she added: “If I could repeat the evening, I would make a clearer distinction between a set of beliefs I abhor, and my human sympathy for the folks who hold them.” Clearer is the important word; as you can hear in the audio from the performance below, her speech was more than a little bit all over the place. Also, you can read the full apology below and then maybe spend some time thinking about how silly the stage name “Shocked” is.

Good afternoon and happy hump day!
Happy birthday to Holly Hunter!
Remember when Hunter made out with Clea DuVall on Saving Grace? Good times.
Singer Michelle Shocked has released an open letter in response to reports that she went on an anti-gay tirade at a recent concert (resulting in a slew of upcoming shows being cancelled). In it, she writes:
I stand accused of forsaking the Lgbt community for a Christianity which is – hear me now - anathema to my understanding of faith. I will no doubt take future flack for saying so. I'm accused of believing that "God hates fags" and that the repeal of Prop 8 will usher in the End Times. Well, if I caused such an absurdity, I am damn sorry. To be clear: I am not now, nor have I ever been, a member of any so-called faith preaching intolerance of anyone.

Singer Michelle Shocked is still feeling the heat after launching into a homophobic tirade during a performance in San Francisco over the weekend.
Now, as Billboard is reporting, all but one of Shocked's upcoming tour dates has been canceled. Among the venues to nix shows were Seattle's Meander's Kitchen, where Shocked was due to perform April 26, and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado.
Meander's Kitchen even opted to replace Shocked's performance with a "Queer Burlesque and Cabaret" show, with proceeds benefiting local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. "By supporting our youth and helping to create a sense of place, community and self, we help to short circuit the cultural influences that so often leave us feeling alone, out of place, and living with self-hatred and denial," organizers wrote on Facebook.
Update as of 11:50 a.m. on March 20: John M. Becker reports that all dates on Shocked's U.

Earlier in the week, we told you about singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked, onstage in San Francisco, going on an anti-gay rant, which included lines like, "I live in fear that the world will be destroyed if gays are allowed to marry" and "Go on Twitter and say 'Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.'"
