As the recent kerfuffle involving a producer of Apple TV+’s Emancipation bringing an 1863 photograph of a horrifyingly abused slave to a red-carpet premiere reminded us, trauma is not a thing to be treated glibly, regardless of intent.
Using unfathomable horrors from the real world as a grounded backdrop for occasionally fantastical genre pieces is a well-established minefield. Remember a few years ago when a pair of alternate histories based on the Civil War were announced and then disappeared, one amid immediate criticism (HBO’s Confederate) and the other amid general curiosity (Amazon’s Black America, from Aaron McGruder)? Yet we’ve still seen the Holocaust play a key role in series built around time travel (Russian Doll), vampires (The Strain), serial killers (The Patient) and action-driven revenge (Hunters), while more viewers likely learned about the Tulsa Massacre through superhero (Watchmen) and horror...

Huey and Riley Freeman will not make their return to screen. The Boondocks reboot series is no longer a go at HBO Max, Deadline can confirm.
In 2019, HBO Max had given a two-season, 24-episode order to the beloved satire animated series from creator Aaron McGruder and Sony Pictures Animation. The series was set to launch in fall 2020 with a 50-minute special.
HBO Max’s new Boondocks would have followed the adventures of self-proclaimed “Civil Rights Legend” Robert “Granddad” Freeman, and his two rambunctious grandsons Huey and Riley. The family has recently moved to an idyllic community in suburban Maryland only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime. Life under Ruckus turns out to be an everyday struggle to survive.
Sony is currently evaluating other options for the project, sources said.

Hip-hip radio icon Charlamagne Tha God, real name Lenard McKelvey, is getting his own weekly late-night show on Comedy Central — and Stephen Colbert is returning to his old stomping grounds to executive produce the series the two South Carolinians co-created.
Yeah, this news is the payoff to that whole Colbert comeback tease.
Colbert, now the host of CBS’ “The Late Show,” has not worked with Comedy Central since “The Colbert Report” ended in 2014. Since Viacom and CBS remerged in 2019, however, he’s been back in the same (extended) family.
“Tha God’s Honest Truth” will be a half-hour program featuring “Charlamagne’s culturally fluent take on social issues in a variety of deep dives, sketches and social experiments that deftly unpacks the most pressing topics permeating politics and culture,” according to Comedy Central. The show aims to be “redemptively comedic, refreshingly unfiltered, and unapologetically Black.”

Adult Swim has “permanently retired” an episode of “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” and an episode of “The Boondocks,” making them unavailable for streaming on the Adult Swim site and WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, “due to cultural sensitivities,” a representative for the cable channel told TheWrap Tuesday.
“The Boondocks” installment in question is Season 3’s “The Story of Jimmy Rebel,” which focuses on Uncle Ruckus’ relationship with a country singer whose albums have titles like “Real N****** Never Die, They Just Smell That Way.”
The “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” episode that was removed is Season 6’s “Shake Like Me,” which is titled in reference to John Howard Griffin’s “Black Like Me,” and sees Shake become “stereotypically” Black in his behavior and physical appearance after being bitten by a Black man infected with toxic waste.

The rage currently aimed at police violence and systemic racism is centuries in the making. The goal of any new streaming service worth its salt is consolidation. We’ve got a lot of major entertainment conglomerates now and each one of them needs a streaming home to consolidate its content on. With that in mind, WarnerMedia’s HBO Max is undoubtedly the biggest streaming release since Disney+ last year.
When AT&T acquired Time Warner and all its holdings in 2016, the newly-branded WarnerMedia subsidiary needed a place to house thousands of Warner movies, and other series, films, and documentaries from Warner-branded studios like CNN, TNT, TBS, The CW, Adult Swim, and much more. Enter HBO Max. Though HBO Max is named after Warner’s original premier streaming and cable entity in HBO, this is much more than just an “upgraded” version of HBO. HBO Max is the juggernaut WarnerMedia streaming service AT&T promised.

Sony Animation unveiled an ambitious collection of new projects at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on Wednesday, including a revival of one the 21st century’s most acclaimed animated series.
While the presentation featured some of the studio’s established titles, the slate involves new projects from a number of notable creators and source material, spanning film and TV aims. Since Albert and Allen Hughes — known professionally as the Hughes brothers — split up around 2004 to direct solo projects, individual output has been uneven in terms of volume, acclaim and box office. Veteran Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. has signed a first-look development deal with Comedy Central that covers content for television and new media. Under the pact, Woods will headline his third one-hour stand-up special for the network and will also write and star in an original digital series titled The Night Pigeon.
Separate from the new pact, Comedy Central has given a pilot green light to Wood’s Jefferson County: Probation, from Trevor Noah & Aaron McGruder. The project, which had been in the works at Comedy Central for a year, will film in Wood’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama this May.
Written by Wood and Aaron McGruder (Boondocks), Jefferson County: Probation is based on Wood’s early life. It stars him as a probation officer willing to bend the rules to help the clients he monitors, much to the chagrin of his partner and everyone else in his life.

Comedy Central struck a new development deal with comedian and actor Roy Wood Jr. that encompasses a “first-look” relationship as well as a few other projects at the Viacom-owned media outlet.

Aaron McGruder has returned to the world of “The Boondocks” for the first time since wrapping the initial run of his Adult Swim series in June 2014. The creator originated “The Boondocks” as a comic strip that launched in 1996 before creating the hugely popular Adult Swim series in 2005. McGruder’s “Boondocks” revival arrives in the form of six brand new comic strips that find the characters taking on current events, from Donald Trump to the recent sexual abuse allegations against music stars R. Kelly and Michael Jackson.
“Did these for fun and to see if I still could,” McGruder wrote in a caption accompanying the comic strips, which were released on Charlemagne tha God’s Instagram account. “More to come…exactly how much more is tough to say. These strips were only possible due to the enormous talent of my good friend Seung Kim, who did the animation for the old...

“Surviving R. Kelly,” the six-part Lifetime documentary series detailing sexual abuse allegations against the R&B singer, has caused the music industry and the nation at large to reexamine R. Kelly’s career on and off stage. The series includes interviews with survivors of R. Kelly’s alleged abuse, and has led to a newly opened criminal investigation against Kelly in Georgia. As shockwaves continue to ripple through the media industry, a 2005 episode of the adult animated series “The Boondocks” has attracted thousands of eyeballs on Reddit for a scene in which the character Huey slams people for celebrating the extremely problematic R. Kelly.
The episode, “The Trial of R. Kelly,” was the second episode of the first season of “The Boondocks” and was written by series creator Aaron McGruder and Rodney Barnes. The plot dreamt up what the trail might’ve looked like where R. Kelly was charged with urinating on an underage girl.

You might say that that the writings and drawings of Aaron McGruder are a bit controversial. In fact if you did you probably wouldn’t be alone and would have plenty of people agreeing with you that his primary show, Boondocks, is in fact something of a major controversy that was allowed to run for a solid decade before it finally went off the air. If you’ve ever watched the show then you know very well that he’s good at satire, but he’s also good at provoking emotions in more than a few people. His character and his writings seem to

Will Packer and Aaron McGruder developing series that envisions new nation created by freed African Americans.
On the heels of HBO’s fumbled announcement of its upcoming alternate history drama Confederate, Amazon is joining forces with prolific producer Will Packer for its own alternate history series.
Amazon is developing Black America, which presents an alternate history where newly freed African-Americans have secured the Southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama post-Reconstruction as reparations for slavery, and with that land, the freedom to shape their own destiny.
The sovereign nation they form, New Colonia, has endured a tumultuous and sometimes violent relationship with its looming “Big Neighbor,” both ally and foe, the United States. The past 150 years have been witness to military incursions, assassinations, regime change, and coups.
