Joanna Bruzdowicz, the Polish-French composer whose wide-reaching work included several collaborations with Agnès Varda, has died at the age of 78.
Her family confirmed to Deadline that Bruzdowicz had passed away peacefully at her music studio in the French Pyrenees.
“The shock of her departure is so great and so sudden, it seems impossible to process our loss as a family,” her son Jörg Tittel commented. “We can take some comfort in knowing that she will continue talking to us through her music. I hope that her untimely departure will lead to more people discovering her seminal work.”
Born in Warsaw, Bruzdowicz was a child prodigy and wrote her first concerto at age 6. She studied at the Warsaw Music High School, at the State Higher School of Music, and earned her M.A. in 1966.

With seven titles selected for Venice VR Expanded at this year’s film festival, Taiwan has once again demonstrated its potential as a global leader in virtual reality content production. But this time, the tech hub in Asia has more to offer: it aims higher than just flaunting its technological advancement and the quality of locally produced works. It wants to elevate itself as an international player that collaborates with creative forces from around the world.
Of the seven titles, five featured in competition and two in out-of-competition, four are co-productions with talent from other countries. Among the five titles in competition that are backed by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (Taicca), three are international co-productions. The entries for this year’s VR Expanded has set a record for the independent agency promoting the island’s creative and content industries established under the Executive Yuan and the Ministry of Culture.

"Do you smell something yucky?" Oh now this is a good one. Nyet! A Brexit UK Border Farce is a new short film made by London-based filmmakers Alex Helfrecht & Jörg Tittel. This satire mocking the crazy times in the UK is about two immigrants crossing the border who are stopped for bringing contraband over the border. But they're stopped for all the wrong reasons. The short stars Olivia Williams, Beatie Edney, Garry Mountaine, and introducing Gabriella Moran and Dimitri Gripari. For those outside of the UK who don't get this, it's about how Brexit is limiting contraband like cheese and foreign food because it's from the EU. There's a nice twist in this; it's deliciously clever short film storytelling. "Is any of this reasonable?" Thanks to Jörg for the tip on this. Original description from Vimeo: "When Boris and Olga arrive at the port of Dover with precious cargo,...

Alex Helfrecht and Jörg Tittel's new film The White King, which made its European debut at Black Nights festival last week, is an all-too-familiar look at a dystopian future, about a boy living in a totalitarian regime. In my review, I called the film an impressive debut, a fascinating adaptation of how a child would view and attempt to understand forces and an environment beyond his control. I saw down with the writer-director team (also husband and wife) to talk more about the film, their inspriation, their vision, and how they work together. The White King will be released in the UK in January 2017. You can find out more about the film on Facebook and Twitter....

Dystopian film and literature has taken a turn from science fiction to possible current affairs, in our recent political climate. With the rise of right-wing political ideology and right-wing political control of influential countries, these stories are more important than ever. And it is in this climate that The White King offers a frightening but all-too-prescient vision of the future. The feature debut of co-directors and screenwriters Alex Helfrecht and Jörg Tittel, it looks through the eyes of a young boy to envision how one could, or could not, speak against an impossible authority.30 years ago, a revolution occurred in The Homeland, which is now an authoritarian country. Djata (Lorenzo Allchurch) and his mother Hannah (Agyness Deyn) are left alone after father and husband Peter...

"Don't be scared, we're all hunters." Oiffy has debuted a trailer for a very interesting dystopian drama titled The White King, based on the novel of the same name, a reference to chess as well as the actual story. The film is about a care-free 12-year-old boy growing up in a ruthless dictatorship in a dystopian future. His father is suddenly imprisoned as a traitor, and he sets off to try and find him again. Starring Jonathan Pryce, Agyness Deyn, Ross Partridge, Fiona Shaw, and newcomer Lorenzo Allchurch as the boy - named Djata. There's certainly a bit of The Hunger Games vibe to this, but it also seems like an intriguing story of struggle in a world that purports to be perfect. There are a few really great shots in this, I am sold. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Alex Helfrecht & Jörg Tittel's The White King,...
