After four successful movies starring one of Hollywood’s most universally adored leading men, the “John Wick” franchise is heading to TV with a far more controversial star. “The Continental,” a three-part miniseries set in the “John Wick” universe and starring Mel Gibson, will release on Peacock this September, the streamer announced Wednesday. A short teaser for the show was also released, which can be watched below.
Named after its central hero, the “John Wick” franchise revolves around a complex criminal underworld populated by colorful and deadly assassins. In the film’s universe, all assassins abide by a code in which the Continental hotel chain serves as a neutral ground for all factions. “The Continental” show is a ’70s-set prequel that tells the story of how the the Continental system was established, from the viewpoint of Winston Scott (played in the films by Ian McShane), the eventual New York City Continental owner.

There was much rejoicing in 2009 when George Miller announced that the long-anticipated "Mad Max: Fury Road," which had been languishing in development hell for over a decade, would at last commence principal photography in 2011. But there was some consternation amongst the franchise's fans in 2010 when Miller disclosed that Tom Hardy would be replacing Mel Gibson, who'd shot to superstardom in the series' title role. A Mad Max movie without Gibson? Could you believe it?
Well, yeah, most people who kept abreast of current events could. Gibson had spent the better part of the 2000s spiraling. He'd been accused of battering his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, caught on tape firing off racist and sexist slurs, and making all kinds of anti-semitic comments. To the extent that he was inebriated in these moments, and, subsequently, sought forgiveness for his behavior and treatment for his addictions, some might've held that he deserved the opportunity to resume his filmmaking career.

Mel Gibson battled coronavirus in April, coming down with a case severe enough to require the 64-year old actor and director to be hospitalized. The “Braveheart” star is the latest celebrity to go public with a positive Covid-19 diagnosis, joining a list that includes Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Pink, and Daniel Dae Kim.
“He tested positive in April and spent a week in the hospital,” a spokesperson for Gibson said in a statement to People magazine. “He was treated with the drug Remdesivir while in the hospital, and has tested negative numerous times since then, as well as positive for the antibodies.”
Gibson was reportedly treated in Los Angeles. The Oscar-winning actor and director recently made headlines after Winona Ryder accused Gibson of making anti-Semitic and homophobic comments in a June interview with The Sunday Times. Gibson called her allegations “100% untrue” and accused Ryder of lying about his remarks.

In 2016, Mel Gibson received a 10-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival where he premiered “Hacksaw Ridge,” which, propelled by a rapturous reception in Italy, went on to receive six Oscar nominations. That included a nod for Gibson for best director. The World War II drama was the first film Gibson had directed in more than a decade.
The hiatus was largely due to being virtually shut out from Hollywood, an expulsion prompted by the infamous Malibu DUI arrest in 2006 during which he unleashed an anti-Semitic rant. That was followed by leaked tapes in 2010 where Gibson screamed racist remarks, including using the n-word, at his then-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of one of his nine children. She later alleged Gibson was physically abusive. Even before his fall from grace, Gibson had routinely been in trouble for homophobic comments.

Winona Ryder offered new details about an encounter with Mel Gibson in which she alleges that the “Braveheart” star made homophobic and anti-Semitic remarks, claiming that he made the comments at a party in the 1990s.
The actress has accused Gibson of making bigoted comments in her presence for years, but those allegations resurfaced in a recent interview with the Sunday Times. Gibson, through a representative, hit back at those charges, calling them “100% untrue” and saying that Ryder was lying and had lied about their encounter for decades. Now, Ryder is sticking by her story and providing more context for the alleged encounter.
“I believe in redemption and forgiveness and hope that Mr. Gibson has found a healthy way to deal with his demons, but I am not one of them,” she said in a statement to Variety. “Around 1996, my friend Kevyn Aucoin and I were on the receiving end of his hateful words.

Mel Gibson is hitting back at explosive claims by Winona Ryder that the Oscar-winning actor and director made anti-Semitic and bigoted remarks and accusing the “Stranger Things” star of lying about their interactions.
“This is 100% untrue,” a representative for Gibson said in a statement to Variety. “She lied about it over a decade ago, when she talked to the press, and she’s lying about it now.”
Ryder accused Gibson of making anti-Semitic and anti-gay comments in a recent interview with the Sunday Times. She has told similar stories in the past, including in a 2010 GQ profile.

Even Mel Gibson wasn’t initially sold on his latest filmmaking project. Late last month, the “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Passion of the Christ” filmmaker was confirmed to direct and co-write a remake of the 1969 Western “The Wild Bunch,” originally directed by Sam Peckinpah, but at a recent event, he admitted that his take on the classic film originally sprung from “a bad idea.” Gibson will handle screenplay duties with Bryan Bagby and also executive produce the film, which is set up at Warner Bros.
On Tuesday evening, Gibson made a surprise appearance at the U.S. premiere of S. Craig Zahler’s film “Dragged Across Concrete,” in which Gibson stars alongside Vince Vaughn as a pair of crooked cops planning a major heist. Deadline reports that Gibson, Zahler, and the rest of the cast sat for a “lengthy post-screening stage interview,” during which talk inevitably turned to Gibson’s imminent remake.

Sarah Silverman Reacts Against Mel Gibson’s ‘Wild Bunch’ Remake by Calling Out His Anti-Semitic Past
Warner Bros. has hired Mel Gibson to co-write and direct its upcoming remake of Sam Peckinpah’s 1969 Western “The Wild Bunch,” but the news wasn’t exactly met with cheers on social media. Gibson has a history of controversial behavior, ranging from making anti-Semitic comments to being convicted of battering his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. The director’s past reemerged on social media in reaction to his high profile new directing gig.
Sarah Silverman took to Twitter to call out Gibson’s anti-Semitic past, sharing an article about Gibson’s “Wild Bunch” remake with a caption that read, “Fucking Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” The words are Gibson’s own from when he was pulled over in 2006 for speeding and drunk driving. Silverman was joined by numerous film writers in rallying against the news of Gibson’s latest directing project.

After Chris Hardwick and James Franco faced accusations of sexual improprieties, they each contended with a raft of dismayed think pieces, social-media brickbats, and a backlash of public opinion; anyone who suggested the possibility of a comeback was immediately upbraided. Some months later, it’s clear that just not the case.
AMC announced the end of Chris Hardwick’s suspension after investigating an abuse claim from his former girlfriend. Collider reported that James Franco is circling his first directing project since five women accused him of sexual harassment. (Franco had already been granted reentry to HBO’s second season of “The Deuce”). Meanwhile, Johnny Depp — accused of physically and verbally abusing ex-wife Amber Heard — was the biggest attraction at last week’s Comic-Con.
As the movement continues, different post-scandal fates have started to emerge. As a Vox headline noted this week, “Mel Gibson has set the blueprint for a #MeToo comeback.

Remember that time when Mel Gibson unleashed all that racist, sexist, anti-Semitic hate speech? And those other times he was openly homophobic? Well, Hollywood has forgotten and forgiven, and so too have moviegoers. The actor and filmmaker returned to the mainstream this month with “Daddy’s Home 2,” a box office success that marks his best opening in front of the camera since “Signs.” Now, Gibson — who was once investigated for domestic violence and admitted hitting his former partner Oksana Grigorieva — has deemed it necessary to weigh in on the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

Mel Gibson has a few choice words for Mel Gibson.
The actor appeared on The Late Show Tuesday to promote his new movie, the gritty World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge, and hunkered down with host Stephen Colbert to answer a bunch of random questions while chilling out on a blanket atop faux grass.
When the host asked about the actor’s biggest snafus, Gibson got both candid and comedic.
“Hey Mel-Mels, when you look back on your life, do you think you’ll have any regrets?” Colbert wondered.
“No, no not one. They tend to come in clusters,” the filmmaker cracked.

The saga of Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva's turbulent separation came to a surprising end this week, when a court ruled that the singer-songwriter must forfeit $500,000 worth of settlement money for violating a confidentiality agreement. The actor/director, 60, and Russian songstress, 46, went through an acrimonious split six years ago that resulted in a settlement offer at one point reportedly worth $15 million. But the release of secretly recorded audio tapes featuring private conversations between the former couple - and later Grigorieva's decision to address domestic violence allegations against Gibson on The Howard Stern Show - has left the singer entitled...

I just picked up on this Business Insider interview with Shane Black, during which the Nice Guys director discussed Mel Gibson's fall from grace (Gibson of course starred in Lethal Weapon, the film that launched Black's screenwriting career) by stating that the actor has "essentially been blacklisted in the industry," before continuing: "I think people don't want to work with him." As Business Insider notes, Gibson has appeared in only six films since the notorious 2006 drunk driving arrest that saw him engaging in an anti-Semitic rant -- none of which were particularly successful either critically or commercially (with the possible exception of the ensemble action sequel The Expendables 3). It's a number that certainly backs up Black's "blacklisting" claim, though it isn't as if anyone needs the help of statistics to know that Gibson has fallen from grace in a big way over the last decade, during which he...

A photographer working for the Daily Telegraph has accused Mel Gibson of pushing her after she took a photograph of him with his girlfriend Rosalind Ross outside a cinema in Sydney. The altercation occurred last night when the star emerged from a screening of David Oelhoffen’s Far From Men, which tells the story of two Algerian men who go on the run in the Atlas Mountains after one of them is accused of murder.
Photographer Kristi Miller says that Gibson pushed her hard in the back, after which Ross stepped in to apologise and calm him down.

Mel Gibson spoke out about Shia Labeouf’s public struggles with celebrity, saying he pities the young actor.
Mel Gibson On His Troubled Past
Labeouf has been plagued by bad press in recent years, culminating in his June arrest and treatment for alcohol addiction. Gibson, of course, can relate. In 2006 Gibson went on an anti-Semitic rant when he was arrested for a DUI, and his career suffered greatly. Later, in 2010, a tape of Gibson’s angry tirade aimed at his estranged girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva was leaked, again damaging his career for years.
“You’re a target. And you have to be really adept at tap dancing and dodging the bullets. And sometimes you get hit. Sometimes mortally,” Gibson told IndieWire.
