In 1979, Ridley Scott unleashed the science fiction classic "Alien" upon audiences and unwittingly kickstarted a lucrative franchise comprised of seven sequels and an assortment of books, comics, and video games. In August 2024, Fede Álvarez plans to release "Alien: Romulus," which will hopefully push the series in a creative new direction, delivering more Xenomorph horror action for audiences to enjoy.
The "Alien" franchise has amassed $1.6 billion at the global box office, despite more than a few bumps. Films such as David Fincher's "Alien 3" and Scott's own "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" divided audiences with their strange methodology. In contrast, the "Alien vs Predator" films never amounted to more than cynical cash grabs. These sequels/prequels also retconned important lore or added new details to the Xenomorph that do not jibe with previously established material, leaving fans scrambling to make sense of the "Alien" timeline. Some of their theories are perfectly acceptable,...

Very sad news today as it’s been reported that M. Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88. No matter the size of the role, the prolific character actor always made a unique impression throughout his long career, which spanned six decades.
M. Emmet Walsh is best known for playing Bryant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, the captain of the Los Angeles Police Department who tasks Deckard with tracking down the replicants at the beginning of the film. He told THR that the cast and crew weren’t quite sure what the make of the movie when they first saw it. “I don’t know if I really understood what in the hell it was all about,” Walsh said. “We all sat there and it ended. And nothing. We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done!

What does it take for a movie adaptation to transcend its source material? Many a filmmaker uses a book as a blueprint (whether or not they read it in its entirety) but take creative license to put their own unique stylistic and/or thematic spin on what is necessarily a much more visual story than the original one on the page. Often that’s taking a key character—whether a comic book antihero or an unnamed book protagonist—and giving them an entirely new backstory or quest. Or choosing a different point of view that opens up new storytelling avenues. In some cases, book and movie follow the same premise but diverge wildly at the end… or they do reach the same narrative conclusion, but on radically different paths that will leave you with very different emotional reactions as a viewer.

A lot of director Ridley Scott's films have had complicated productions, and his 1982 film "Blade Runner" was no exception. To this day, there's still some debate over which edition is the "correct one" for viewers to watch. Do they go with the theatrical version, where they have to listen to Harrison Ford's over-explanatory narration? Or do they go with the 1992 director's cut, which took out the voiceovers and threw in more ambiguity over the main character Deckard's human/replicant status? Most fans agree that the 2007 final cut is the best one, as that's what Ridley Scott had the most creative control over, but we can forgive newcomers for finding this all a bit confusing. Even among long-term fans, there are a lot of ongoing debates about "Blade Runner" lore that basically boil down to which versions of the movie you consider to be canon.

Over-the-top action sequences. Bone-crunching fights between titans of the action genre. A popular horror director getting his chance to make a massive-budget blockbuster. Fast & Furious 7 (watch it Here) brings all of those elements to the table. But it’s primarily remembered for being a production that was disrupted by tragedy. And we’re going to look into how it all played out in this episode of Revisited.
Universal Pictures doesn’t have a lot of major blockbuster franchises. In 2012, Jurassic Park had been dormant for a decade and the Bourne Identity movies had lost Jason Bourne. So they really only had Fast and Furious. It makes sense that while they were sending the sixth movie out into the world,...

Writer, director, and producer Ridley Scott has been making movies for decades, but one of his earliest features was also apparently one of his most difficult. The man behind "Napoleon" (read our review!) is no stranger to directing historical epics, real-world dramas, and even existential science-fiction, but in an interview with Wired in 2007, he revealed that the most difficult film to create was his 1982 science fiction classic, "Blade Runner." Loosely based on the 1968 Phillip K. Dick novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?," "Blade Runner" is a noirish sci-fi starring Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, who hunts down renegade android "replicants" in his job as a blade runner. In the course of hunting down a handful of such replicants that escaped from an off-world labor camp, he starts to question the very nature of humanity. It's heady, moody stuff, but it's also a deeply beloved film that inspired both a sequel and an animated series.

Some movies just don't seem to age, and "Blade Runner" is one of them. Aside from the fact that the film is one of the most influential sci-fi flicks in cinema history, thanks to the efforts of director Ridley Scott and his production designer Lawrence G. Paull, the 1982 classic remains one of the most stunningly realized films ever made. The immersive world of Scott's dystopian sci-fi gave the impression, as Christopher Nolan once put it, of a "whole world outside the frame of the scene." That's made even more impressive when you consider the production team had a limited VFX budget and constructed most of the sets and visual effects practically.
In other words, "Blade Runner" doesn't look a tad dated even more than 40 years after its debut. Alas, the same can't be said for the cast. The sad truth is that, despite Joe Russo celebrating the inevitable rise of...

In Greta Gerwig's hit film "Barbie," actress Alexandra Shipp plays Writer Barbie, a character who regularly wins Nobel prizes for her work. When Ken (Ryan Gosling) brings word of the patriarchy back from the real world into the Edenic, all-pink world of Barbie dolls, however, Writer Barbie's mind is curiously erased. She, like almost all of the Barbies, has no context for the patriarchy, and cannot resist confident, thick-headed, masculine bluster. She -- and many Barbies -- briefly become passive, grinning "girlfriends," eager to listen to whatever male-forward blather the Kens of Barbieland feel they need to share.
Eventually, Writer Barbie and the rest of the Barbies are "deprogrammed" by being reminded of the horrendous everyday struggles every human woman needs to survive on a daily basis. When she snaps out of it, Writer Barbie looks back on her time being brainwashed with confusion. How was it, she wonders,...

The Blade Runner franchise is continuing to expand. Harrison Ford may be hanging up the fedora and bullwhip as Indiana Jones, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to retire. Hey, as Indy once said, it’s not the years, it’s the mileage – and Ford clearly hasn’t hit his miles just yet.
Harrison Ford, who will turn 81 next month, sat down with CNN’s Chris Wallace recently, adding to their discussion that he has no intentions to retire. “I don’t do well when I don’t have work…I love to work… I love to feel useful. It’s my Jones, I want to be helpful.” He added that his working relationships are what give him much of his drive. “It is the people that you get to work with. I’m going to ask you a series of questions. Just relax and answer them as simply as you can. It’s your birthday, someone gives you a calfskin wallet. You’ve got a little boy, he shows you his butterfly collection, plus the killing jar.
For years, Ridley Scott and Harrison Ford had very different ideas about how Deckard, the character Ford played in Scott’s 1982 movie Blade Runner, would respond to those questions/statements. After all, they come from the Voight-Kampff Test, an examination of empathy used to distinguish between human beings and replicants, the artificially created organic beings that Blade Runners like Deckard hunt down and “retire.” Scott had long maintained that Deckard himself was a replicant, resulting in a delicious irony at the center of the film. However, Ford followed the version of Deckard in the source material, the 1968 Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?...

As the 2023 Cannes Film Festival hits its midway point, I have three main takeaways from its first half:
(1) None of the high-profile films that have already screened — among them Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Todd Haynes’ May December and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest — have been universally embraced.
(2) Street peddlers of umbrellas must be making a killing — the weather has been awful almost every day.
(3) The most exciting and moving event thus far happened Thursday evening, when Harrison Ford — arguably cinema’s biggest living legend — was greeted with a raucous standing ovation at the Palais, surprised with an honorary Palme d’Or and moved to tears ahead of the world premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and, allegedly, final installment in one of the most popular film franchises of all-time.

Heavy spoilers for "Fast X" to follow.
"Fast and Furious" villains are as wildly different and escalating in goofiness. The franchise has evolved from being about street racers and low-stakes crime to an epic saga about family on the world stage, with seemingly immortal heroes matched by cartoon villains with plans to control nukes and other super weapons.
While plenty of the villains in the franchise are just drug lords and megalomaniacs with control issues who are rather forgettable, the best villains are the ones who take things personally. They don't care about profit or world domination nearly as much as they care about causing the family harm. Out of these, one stands out as by far the most stylish, unhinged, and dangerous villain the franchise has ever seen, Jason Momoa's Dante Reyes.
While Reyes is new as a villain, he has been here for a long time, watching and preparing from the shadows.

The "Fast and Furious" saga is one of Hollywood's purest movie franchises, one that understands the primordial appeal of exciting spectacle, dumb plots, and larger-than-life characters, as well as earnest melodrama and a focus on family that other franchises simply can't replicate.
This is also a movie franchise unafraid to reinvent itself, to destroy its continuity for the sake of a better story and spectacle. The only rule in these movies is the rule of cool. Because of how often the franchise is retentive while also retconning itself, each movie's villain is as different as they can be from each other.
And yet, there are two clear camps when it comes to "Fast and Furious" baddies. There are the ones with a personal vendetta against Dominic Toretto or the "fambly," and then there's everyone else. The thing is, time and time again, the franchise has made it clear that the...

2017 was a time of great tumult in the world of "Fast & Furious." Paul Walker's shocking death part-way through shooting on "Furious 7" had left many fans conflicted about the franchise continuing, especially after the movie's tear-jerking ending/tribute to the late actor. Then there was the brouhaha that was the Candy Ass incident unfolding behind the scenes, with Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel on the precipice of recreating Dom and Hobbs' sweaty "Fast Five" brawl in real-life. It appeared that even The Fast Saga was no longer big enough to contain these two chrome-domed mega-stars in tight-fitting T-shirts. But what to do about it? Turn the next entry into the backdoor pilot for a Johnson-led spinoff, of course!

Perhaps the biggest mistake the “Fast and Furious” franchise ever made was in “F9: The Fast Saga,” when the characters suddenly became self-aware and realized that after all the physics-defying vehicular mayhem they’ve been through, they always miraculously emerge unscathed.
How could they have defied the odds for so long? Are they truly immortal or are they merely blessed with impenetrable plot armor? And if any of those things are true why should the audience care one whit about what happens to them? Especially when even the characters who do die usually come back after a sequel or two.
“F9” made a convincing case for letting this whole “Fast and Furious” series finally end. But just when you thought it was okay to check out, “Fast X” pulls you back in. Louis Leterrier’s installment does an impressive job of making all the old nonsense make a little bit of sense again.

Vin Diesel‘s constant activity on Instagram has yielded at least one very good result: getting Helen Mirren to join the social media platform!
During the “Fast X” junket in Rome on Thursday, the Academy Award winner spoke with Et’s Nischelle Turner and shared it was actually Dom Toretto himself who got her into Instagram nearly a decade ago.
“It was Vin and his team who sort of first introduced me to Instagram,” Mirren said. “That was, like, I don’t know how many years ago — seven years ago? — but it was a world I wasn’t really aware of and they went, ‘Oh, no, Helen, you’ve gotta do this.'”
And she did. Mirren joined Instagram in December 2016 and very quickly distinguished herself as a master of selfies, though it’s a title she may not exactly agree with.
“I’m not very good at it,” she quipped.

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 6, "Guns for Hire."
Droids took center stage on the latest episode of "The Mandalorian," at least in terms of the morality and science fiction presented on the show. Oftentimes, "Star Wars" has skirted around the issue of droid rights and the morality involved in using droids for labor, but this installment of "The Mandalorian" took it on as the undercurrent for the episode. Naturally, it borrowed from the work of Philip K. Dick, featuring touchstones from "Blade Runner" throughout the episode.
Titled "Guns for Hire," the episode sees Din Djarin and Lady Bo-Katan Kryze tasked by the elected rulers of Plazir-15 with investigating an odd rash of droid malfunctions plaguing their planet. They live in a veritable utopia where the droids handle all of the labor, leaving the organic beings to lives of art and leisure. What's causing these violent malfunctions...

In fact, Ford never misses the mark when it comes down to nailing his character. He brought things home as Han Solo in the original Star Wars Trilogy, Jack Ryan in Patriot Games, Indiana Jones, and Rick Deckard. It’s no wonder he’s had such a successful career and a huge fan base. Being a celebrated veteran actor, most things about Harrison Ford are already public knowledge. So, we should stop there...

Harrison Ford is trying new things of late, and we're all for it. After decades of sticking exclusively to movies, barring that cameo he did for "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" in the '90s, the veteran star has finally waded into the streaming waters and fully immersed himself. His role as rancher Jacob Dutton on Paramount's "Yellowstone" spin-off "1923" has seen him at his gruffest and most resolute, as his character faces the harsh realities of life in rural Montana.
But perhaps the most charmingly surprising role he's taken on is that of Dr. Paul Rhodes in Apple TV+'s "Shrinking," wherein he displays a refreshing comedic sensibility that even surprised his co-star, Jason Segel. And if you ask the 80-year-old, surprising people, including himself, is exactly how he wants to spend his twilight years. ‘Blade Runner 2099’: Amazon’s Cyberpunk Limited Series Taps ‘Station Eleven’ Director Jeremy Podeswa
Back in 2017, director Denis Villeneuve and producer Ridley Scott delivered “Blade Runner 2049,” a legacy sequel to the 1982 film that brought back Harrison Ford as the titular Blade Runner, Deckard. The events of that film left the door open for a direct sequel with a replicant uprising, however, plans for a spinoff series “Blade Runner 2099” from Alcon Entertainment and Scott Free Productions became the priority as it landed at Amazon.
