Huzzah! Sisters Elle Fanning and Dakota Fanning could both finally earn their inaugural Golden Globe Award nominations this year — the former in Best TV Comedy Actress for Hulu’s “The Great” and the latter in Best TV Drama Actress for TNT’s “The Alienist: Angel of Darkness.”
As of this writing, Elle sits in second place in our odds for comedy actress, which is hardly a surprise. Given the Hollywood Foreign Press Association members’ affinity for actors portraying real life people, Elle’s turn as Catherine the Great should be right up its alley. In fact, just last year, the Globes nominated Helen Mirren for playing the same role in the HBO miniseries “Catherine the Great.” And while you could argue that the HFPA might not want to recognize this role back to back, Elle’s unique spin on Russia’s longest-serving female ruler could win them over.

Two years ago, TNT’s red-hot program “The Alienist,” based on Caleb Carr‘s novel, earned a pair of Golden Globe nominations for Best Limited Series and lead actor Daniel Bruhl. “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” ended up taking home the trophies for series and lead actor Darren Criss, but now “The Alienist” has a chance to redeem itself with it second season, “Angel of Darkness.”
Of note, this time around the show will compete in the drama categories at the Golden Globes, as opposed to the limited series races where it previously found success. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association loves these kinds of lavish productions with A-list actors and film-quality crafts, so don’t count out “The Alienist” just yet, even though it faces stiff competition in Best Drama Series from “The Crown,” “The Mandalorian,” “Lovecraft Country,” “Ozark” and “Perry Mason.”

Rudy Mance received an Emmy nomination in 2018 for designing the costumes for TNT’s “The Alienist” alongside Michael Kaplan, and now he’s the man in charge for the period drama‘s second season, “Angel of Darkness.” “I was very lucky to see Michael in his process firsthand and sort of work with him to develop this world, develop the characters and sort of carve it out together with him,” Mance reveals in Gold Derby’s exclusive TV Costume Designers Panel (watch above). “To get the chance to come back two years later and sort of have the foundation laid out for each of these characters and see and know where they came from, and then to put my own spin on it and push it forward two years, it was sort of a perfect storm.”

The Alienist: Angel of Darkness Episode 7
It’s hard to believe, but we’ve already reached the penultimate hour of The Alienist: Angel of Darkness. It’s unclear as to why TNT wanted to burn through the series with two episodes a night; perhaps the network knows the show will do better on streaming platforms and is just speeding up that arrival. Regardless, we’re at the end of the line for this season and though there’s been some missteps along the way, solid performances, immaculate production design, and a dash of campiness has made Year 2 more or less on par with the series’ first season.
Though Kreizler may no longer be at the center of the story, the show has done a solid job making Sara Howard the series’ new protagonist. Her storyline this year, from launching her own...

The Alienist Season 2 Episode 5
After the best episode of the season, The Alienist: Angel of Darkness mainly plays their criminal pursuit of Libby straight, adhering close to the procedural structure that works, but doesn’t necessarily excite. Though a spooky atmosphere is built, which helps create some palpable tension, this episode mainly focuses on Sara in Super Detective mode. When “Belly of the Beast” does take some bold creative swings, digging into the character work that often elevates the show, some of the season’s cracks begin to appear.
The episode opens on Libby unsuccessfully trying to breast feed the Linares baby. Occasionally the cinematography took on a hazy quality, playing wonderfully with the candlelight, that kicked these unsettling Libby scenes up a notch. Libby ultimately gets frustrated with the child and begins ranting about how her child would never bite. It’s clear...

At the center of The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, which airs 9-11 Sunday on TNT, are two kidnapped baby girls.
One is the daughter of an indigent, single mother, and the other is the daughter of the Spanish counsel general.
The first of the infants, the poor child, turns up dead in a doll display at a ritzy department store after her mother, Martha Napp, has been executed for her murder.
Sara Howard's detective agency is hired to locate the second girl, Anna Linares.
Complicating matters is that the United States is about to go to war with Spain, with William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal fanning the flames.
One thing connecting the two children is the Lying-In Hospital, New York's maternity hospital for unwed mothers.
Martha gave birth to her daughter there, while Isabella Linares took Anna there after an accident at home.

With its gory deaths, parallels to real-life political turbulence and a new case involving — shudder — murdered babies, The Alienist’s second season isn’t exactly feel-good summer escapism.

The Alienist Season 2 Episode 1
Times have certainly changed. I’m not comparing today’s world to that of 1897; the scenes in the premiere of The Alienist: Angel of Darkness featuring police brutalizing innocent protesters highlights that society hasn’t evolved that much. No, I’m talking about the world in which The Alienist’s first “event” season arrived in compared to the TV landscape that the second outing arrives in today. The Alienist’s first good, not quite great, season was dinged for arriving in a crowded pack of shows with similar subject matter or period settings. However, The Alienist: Angel of Darkness appears to be one of the last big cable series to debut before the coronavirus and its effect on television production schedules creates a void in available new content. Ruth Ammon doesn’t normally come in on the second season of shows as a production designer, but for “The Alienist: Angel of Darkness,” set in 1897 New York, she was willing to make an exception.
Ammon picked up where Mara LePere-Schloop left off in Season 1, having turned areas in Budapest into New York’s Gilded Age for the show’s murder mystery, in which Sara (Dakota Fanning) reunites with Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl) to investigate the kidnapping of a baby.
Ammon expanded on the period-appropriate sets built by LePere-Schloop (who picked up for Ammon in the second season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”), using locations like the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library for Delmonico’s steakhouse and building a meat market to visually enhance the show’s macabre and mysterious world. Here, she highlights key locations for the TNT series, which premieres July 19.

Luke Evans has quite the jewelry collection, thanks to his career in Hollywood.

Daniel Bruhl just received his second career Golden Globe nomination, this time for his television work on the TNT limited series “The Alienist.” It’s about a team of investigators exploring a string of child prostitute murders in the late 1800s in New York. Bruhl plays Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a criminal psychologist at a time when such a field of study was often dismissed. While this is his first TV series role in English, he is well known in the world of film, collecting prior Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, BAFTA and Critics’ Choice Award nominations for the 2013 film “Rush.”

Dakota Fanning suffered for her role in “The Alienist.”
She played secretary Sara Howard in the TNT series, which was set in 1890s New York City and followed a team of investigators solving a series of murders. The period drama required her to don a corset as part of her costume, which she had to wear for seven months, she told W Magazine.

Caleb Carr’s first in his Kreizler series of novels, “The Alienist,” introduces a rich world of turn-of-the-century crime-solving. Set in 1896 on the cusp of the introduction of forensic science and psychology in investigations, the story focuses on one man’s perspective of the job in the historic New York City setting. But when Hossein Amini and E. Max Frye worked on adapting the story into a 10-episode limited series for TNT, they knew immediately they had to expand the points of view.
“One of the things that I always loved about the book was the combination of an incredibly dark world with violence and murder and corruption but with almost incredibly innocent characters at the heart of it,” Amini says. “We felt keeping the balance of those tones was important, but it leans on character a bit more than the procedural.”

Dakota Fanning has done a lot of interviews in recent months about her TNT drama “The Alienist,” and one theme keeps popping up: How sadly relevant the show’s treatment of women, immigrants and the poor in the 1890s feels to 2018.
“That comes up a lot when I discuss the series,” she told IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. “On the one hand, you want your series to be relevant and to speak to people and create conversation, and be modern. But some of the reasons this series is relevant and modern are actually why you wish that weren’t true… There are parallels, that’s a fact.”
In “The Alienist,” Fanning plays Sara Howard, an ambitious secretary determined to become the city’s first female police detective. That puts her in many ways at odds with the times, as women were not accepted in the workplace.

For Michael Kaplan, the chance to step away from costume designing “Star Wars” and work on his first period piece was a long time coming.
In fact, he’d been eyeing Caleb Carr’s “The Alienist” ever since the crime drama was published in 1994 and unsuccessfully developed as a feature by Curtis Hanson. So when Kaplan finally landed the 10-part TNT series set in 1896 New York (with the help of producer friend and J.J. Abrams collaborator Bryan Burke), it was both a welcome and fortuitous fit.
“Conveying class differences was a big part of my attraction to the project,” Kaplan said. “There are so many different strata in 1896 New York society. But it was like doing 10 movies at once. We were doing dozens of fittings a day, every day, like five days a week, sometimes seven. It was crazy. But I wanted to take the time and the care with each performer.

Dakota Fanning, who stars as a police secretary in TNT’s 1890s crime drama “The Alienist,” says her character’s storylines disappointingly reflect much of modern-day women’s experiences.
Fanning’s Sara Howard, secretary to the police commissioner, is often the butt of the mistreatment from her co-workers, but by the end of the series, she’s also the one pushing them to solve the case of a serial killer murdering young children.
“You see Sara’s involvement evolve, and we see her kind of come into her power in her position at the police department,” Fanning said in an interview with TheWrap. “We see her in this position of power, wanting to continue this case when everyone else is thinking it’s hopeless … and maybe not worth it.”

Netflix have released a short featurette about costume design for The Alienist, giving an overall glimpse at the work of Michael Kaplan and his team in putting together the era of 1896, New York. What is enticing about The Alienist, apart from the fact that it’s brilliant whodunit telly, is that it is set outside of England, which is so often the preserve of dramas such as these. This is NY style at a point in history when those with money were about to get a whole lot more. Expensive, in other words, and if you had deep enough pockets your taste in fashion would echo this.
Check out the video below:
The Alienist takes place during the Gilded Age in the U.S. that covered around thirty years toward the end of the 1800s. It was a time of significant socio-economic growth, as reflected in clothing for both men and women.

Despite having been in the industry from such a young age, Dakota Fanning is remarkably down to earth; a level-headed actress who continuously chooses interesting projects, each so different from the next. She can now be seen in Netflix’s new original series The Alienist, which is available to watch now.
To mark its launch, we had the pleasure of meeting Fanning in London, as she discusses her love for the serial killer, whodunnit narrative, which enriches this particular project. She also talks about the success rate of Netflix, and whether that attracted her to signing up to this series, and just how much of a dream it is for any actor to get their teeth stuck into a character across a series, allowing them much room to explore and develop their role.

Netflix don’t tend to put out bad series, which gives us hope for their new original production The Alienist, starring Daniel Bruhl, Dakota Fanning and Luke Evans. Launching this week, to get you excited we sat down with Welsh actor Luke Evans to discuss his role in this creative project.
We asked about the role of John Moore, and how he fits into this world. Evans also speaks about the meticulous attention to detail on the set and how he became absorbed in between takes. He also speaks about the absurd notion of an ‘Alienist’ – a term to describe those who studied, and dedicated their profession to mental health. We then went on to speak about the power of TV and how incredible an art-form it is nowadays, while back to the cinema we asked about his forthcoming collaboration with Luc Besson in Anna. Evans says that if ‘Leon and Nikita had a baby,...

The Alienist, TNT’s limited series about the search for a serial killer, is set in 19th century New York. But Dakota Fanning, who plays police department employee Sara Howard, says women back then faced similar challenges on the job as they do today.
As the only woman in the police department, Sara must deal with discrimination, and she is sexually harassed on the job in an incident that seems like it was ripped from current headlines.
“The same things were happening in 1896 that are happening in 2018,” Fanning said Sunday during a panel at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmy event.
Based on the novel by Caleb Carr, the 10-part Alienist series follows Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl), a brilliant but controversial “alienist” who uses new psychological methods. Luke Evans co-stars, while Fanning plays a key role as the secretary who secretly helps Kreizler with the search for the serial killer.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Alienist” finale “Castle in the Sky.”]
After months of research, late nights, stakeouts, and diving into dark psyches, “The Alienist” investigative team finally finds their man … and then promptly loses him when a rogue police officer shoots and kills him. It’s a frustrating outcome for all involved, but most especially Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl), whose work profiling the killer feels incomplete.
Over the course of the season, Kreizler’s attempts to profile the man he’d come to know as Japheth Dury, aka John Beecham, uncovered horrific stories of emotional abuse at the hands of his mother and sexual abuse from a trusted family friend. Although Kreizler can’t condone Dury murdering and mutilating boy prostitutes, he eventually came around to having a bit of sympathy for him. “We set out to find a monster, but all we found was a child,” Kreizler muses after the case has closed.

Sara Howard lives in the dark world of the seedier side of New York City in the late 19th century. Actress Dakota Fanning plays Sara on the TNT anthology thriller “The Alienist” and was excited to halt her film career for a short while to take on the role. In our recent interview (watch above), she reveals, “I was thrilled at the opportunity to show such a pioneer, ground-breaking character for 1896. We didn’t get to see women in those positions very often, so I loved that aspect of the story. I tend to be drawn to darker subject matter in general.”
SEEEmmy spotlight: Will ‘The Alienist’ repeat the success of Cary Joji Fukunaga’s last murder mystery ‘True Detective’?
Her character is the secretary to the police commissioner and assists new criminal psychologist Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Bruhl) who is on the hunt for a serial killer targeting street children.
