You didn’t really think Toronto detectives (and BFFs) Samantha Wazowski (Meredith MacNeill) and Kelly Duff (Adrienne C. Moore) would stay apart for long, did you? When the comedic procedural Pretty Hard Cases returns with its final 10 episodes of Season 3, eight months have passed since their partnership was dissolved, and they’re missing each other big-time. “Sam and Kelly had come to rely heavily on each other both at work and as best friends,” says executive producer Sherry White, noting that much has changed since they split up. (Credit: Freevee) A disgruntled Sam has been demoted to beat cop, “which has been a big blow to her self-esteem,” says executive producer Tassie Cameron. She’s also living with and dating her ex-husband Steve (Trevor Hayes). “They’re trying to figure out how to navigate their relationship as former spouses and current partners,” Cameron adds. Meanwhile, Kelly has been busy working an undercover case,...

Former Orange Is the New Black inmate Adrienne C. Moore operates on the other side of the law in this Canadian buddy-cop treat, Pretty Hard Cases. Gruff Toronto drug squad detective Kelly Duff (Moore) and her colleague in the gang unit, rule-following optimist Samantha Wazowski (Meredith MacNeill), “are the yin to the other’s yang,” says exec producer Sherry White. (Credit: Ian Watson/IMDb TV) In this lighthearted crime series streaming on Prime’s free IMDb TV channel, they blend differing work styles to bring down a common target: a violent drug-dealing street gang. “The stakes are high,” says executive producer Tassie Cameron, “but there’s always room for fun.” Initially antagonistic, the women rub off on each other. “Sam will help Kelly learn to be more vulnerable, and Kelly will help Sam become tougher,” says Cameron, adding that the women “are better together…most of ...

IMDb TV has acquired Canadian drama series Pretty Hard Cases, setting a U.S. premiere date of September 10 for its first season.
The action-packed series from Sherry White and Tassie Cameron examines the odd couple dynamic between two radically different female detectives in their early 40s. The first is optimistic, over-achieving guns and gangs detective, Samantha Wazowski (Meredith MacNeill). The second is Kelly Duff (Adrienne C. Moore), a tough, unapologetic type from the drug squad.
It’s not until Samantha and Kelly’s chance meeting during a takedown that they realize they’re going after the same target. While they couldn’t disagree more on strategy, and pretty much everything else, they are forced to put their differences aside in their quest to dismantle the Stockwoods, a Toronto street gang dealing drugs and wreaking havoc on the community.
As the season unfolds, we see that both women are grappling with loneliness,...

Orange Is The New Black’s Adrienne C. Moore and Baroness von Sketch Show’s Meredith MacNeill are to star in detective drama Lady Dicks for Canada’s CBC and NBCUniversal International Studios.
The pair will play two radically different female detectives in their early 40s in the ten-part series co-created by Rookie Blue exec producers Tassie Cameron and Sherry White.
The action-packed series follows Guns and Gangs detective, Samantha (MacNeill) and Narcotics detective, Kelly (Moore), who by day are true action heroes in their own particular way: skilled, tough, determined, and ruthless. But by night, they’re both grappling with loneliness, dysfunctional families, screwed-up love lives, and a sense that their professional ambitions may not be totally in line with their personal needs. Their friendship could help to balance each other out, if only they didn’t drive one another utterly insane.

Biopics of visual artists are (or can be) some of the more interesting of that mode of film: it's fairly simple to show a painter creating their work, or show the inspiration for that work. Too often, artists who are depicted for the big screen tend to be of the more flamboyant sort, or ones who lives are filled with glitz, glamour, drugs, and sex. I doubt many people outside of Canada are familiar with 20th century folk artist Maud Lewis; in Maudie, director Aiisling Walsh and writer Sherry White bring to quite but riveting life the story of an artist whose seemingly quiet outer life belied the richness of her imagination, seen through her artistic expression. Maud (Sally Hawkins), whose childhood rheumatoid arthritis have...

Aisling Walsh's Maudie, screenplay by Sherry White, with a score by Michael Timmons, stars Sally Hawkins as Canadian Folk Artist Maud Lewis (as in Paul King's Paddington, she holds the world together). Ethan Hawke is her husband Everett with Gabrielle Rose as Maud's Aunt Ida, Zachary Bennett as her brother Charles, and a Katharine Hepburn sounding Kari Matchett as a Peggy Guggenheim-like character named Sandra.
At the Crosby Street Hotel in New York, Aisling and I discussed her work with production designer John Hand, costume choices with Trysha Bakker, the paintings of Maud Lewis and her relationship to Everett, their home, and her family, and what it means to be a Naïve Artist.

A tender but mawkishly simple melodrama about a handicapped painter who falls in love with a misogynistic orphan in Depression-era Nova Scotia, “Maudie” would be impossible to take seriously if not for the fact that it tells a true story. Of course, just because something actually happened doesn’t make it any easier to swallow the sight of it on screen. Despite charming performances from Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke, this saccharine romance — which pities its characters as much as they pity each other, and often veers perilously close to “The Other Sister” territory as a result — rings a bit false from start to finish.

Tonight marks the sixth season finale of Rookie Blue and it may end up being the last episode of the series as well. It's been rumored that season six would be the end of the series and ABC and Shaw Media have yet to announce a final decision.
Tassie Cameron has been Rookie Blue's showrunner from the beginning and has said that she plans step down to do other projects. Writer Sherry White is ready to take over if a seventh season is ordered.
The ratings for season six of Rookie Blue are way down -- about 30% -- when compared to the numbers from season five. It's one of ABC's lowest-rated summer series right now but the network is short on scripted programming.

No surprise, ever-spirited Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym) led her team to the win, triumphing over her recent undercover partner Nick Collins (Peter Mooney) ... which had to hurt him, his being a trained war veteran and all. Until women reach a 50-50 parity with men directors, my mission continues to count the women directors in upcoming and recent film festivals (and an occasional informal glance at what’s selling in the markets). Women’s films in Berlin reflect women’s place in the world both in content and in the numbers of women represented as directors, producers, writers, etc. John Cooper of Sundance stresses the increasing and possibly 50-50 parity of women producers, but I am looking at the directors. As March is Women’s History Month (and all the other months are Men’s History Month according to Gloria Steinem’s L.A. Times Article of March 4, 2010) this blog is in honor of all women everywhere.

The 16th annual Bradford International Film Festival, which will run March 18-28, is a total celebration of all forms of cinema, from classic films to modern world cinema to a tribute to Cinerama and more. But, most excitingly, is a bombastic collection of some of the best, most exciting underground films being made today.
From Bad Lit’s perspective, the most thrilling screening of the entire 10-day affair is the new film by British filmmaker Peter Whitehead, Terrorism Considered as One of the Fine Arts. In the U.S., Whitehead is a “lost” filmmaker from the underground’s heyday in the ’60s, being left out of most histories of the underground movement. Whitehead directed several influential films, including Wholly Communion and The Fall, before dropping out of filmmaking in the mid-’70s.
Film historian Jack Sargeant wrote extensively about and interviewed Whitehead for his wonderful book on Beat cinema, Naked Lens.

New York's Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA), in association with Telefilm Canada, will organize the seventh annual Canadian Front. This event will be held from March 17 to March 24, 2010. Moreover, New Yorkers will have the chance to see nine Canadian films.
Obviously, this event should help Canadian films to find a U.S. distributor and allow New Yorkers to see Canadian films that were completed over the last 18 months. As a matter of fact, it was the Canadian Front event that allowed Bruce McDonald's brilliant zombie film Pontypool to be distributed in the USA by IFC Films for instance.
This year, the Canadian Front has in store two comedies, two dramas, two coming-of-age stories, two documentaries and an old classic. Speaking about that classic, the film in question was directed by Allan King, a Canadian director who left us in June 2009 and whose work was the subject of a MoMA retrospective in 2007. So,...

Actors Robert Duvall and Bill Murray were both winners at the 27th Turin Film Festival Awards as they shared the Best Actor prize for their roles in Get Low.
Jurors at the event, which ran from 13 to 21 November, decided the duo should both collect the honour after putting in two moving performances in Get Low, about a man who throws his own funeral party before his death.
The Special Jury Prize was also split between two films, Sherry White's Crackie and Damien Chazelle's Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, while Catalina Saavedra was named Best Actress for her role as the title character in Sebastian Silva's La Nana.
Director Pietro Marcello scored a $37,000 (£23,000) prize as his picture La Bocca del Lupo was selected as the Best Film, marking the first time an Italian production has taken the top honour at the Italian festival, which recognises the work of young directors.

The 27th edition of the Turin Film Festival honored an Italian production with its top prize for the first time, when "La Boca del Lupo" (The Mouth of the Wolf) from Pietro Marcello won the festival's central honor.
Veteran actors Robert Duvall and Bill Murray were co-awarded the prize for best actor for their roles in "Get Low" from Aaron Schneider. The film tells the story of a 1930s Tennessee hermit who threw his own funeral party before he was dead.
Vatalina Saavedra, meanwhile, took home the award for best actress for her work as the title character in Sebastian Silva's "La Nana" (The Maid).
A pair of North American films split the special jury prize: "Crackie" from Canadaian director Sherry White and U.S. director Damien Chazella's "Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench."

The Greek film Dogtooth by director Yorgos Lanthimos won the $15,000 Louve D'Or prize [1] at the 38th Montreal Festival du Nouveau Cinema at the weekend. The seriously twisted black comedy stunned audiences world wide starting at Cannes where it picked up the Prix Un Certain Regard [2]. Always unpredictable and certainly provocative, the picture is bound to raise a few questions and eyebrows. You can read our review here or listen to it here. Just like me, were you pissed off because you had to stay in your hometown while the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) was happening? Well, it appears that the wait is over! In fact, the Festival du nouveau cinéma (Fnc) - which will be taking place in Montreal from October 7 to 18 - has revealed its line-up of Canadian films. Besides, this goes without saying that most of these films were previously shown at the Tiff.
So here's the list of feature films and (a few) documentaries. By the way, each film's description is taken directly from the media release that was sent to me.
