The Johnny Depp film “Jeanne du Barry” from director and star (and producer and co-writer) Maïwenn will open in U.S. theaters on May 2 as part of a special engagement via Fathom Events and distributor Vertical.
The film will open exclusively in more than 500 U.S. theaters on May 2, 2024, with the possibility that the film could run longer than its “limited” engagement if it’s a success. The first big theatrical release of May 2024 is 20th Century’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which will command many more screens beginning May 10.
“Jeanne du Barry” was the opening night film at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and was a modest box office hit, grossing $13 million outside of the states. Vertical picked it up last June but has yet to release it here.
With more than 500 screens in tow, the movie will be the widest opening for Depp in the U.

“Jeanne Du Barry,” the latest film from French director Maïwenn that stars Johnny Depp, has found a North American distributor in Vertical following its Cannes debut, an individual with knowledge told IndieWire.
“Jeanne Du Barry” was the opening night film at the Cannes Film Festival last month, where it received a 7-minute standing ovation from the crowd in the Palais. But it was a controversial choice because of Depp’s continued career rehab following the highly publicized defamation trial between him and ex-wife Amber Heard, but also because of a report against Maïwenn that accused her of assaulting a journalist, an accusation she later admitted to.
The film stars Depp as the French King Louis Xv in a supporting role and primarily follows Maïwenn as Jeanne Vaubernier, an 18th Century French working class woman who became King Louis Xv’s lover. Here’s the full synopsis:

Johnny Depp’s return to acting following his defamation trial against Amber Heard is not being backed by Netflix. Bloomberg reported that the Depp-starring French movie “La Favorite” is receiving “financial backing” from Netflix, but a source close to the streaming giant told Variety this reporting is not true. Netflix is not financing the movie but has licensed the film to stream in France only after it completes the country’s 15-month theatrical window. The film is not a Netflix original.
“La Favorite” is set to star Depp as French king Louis Xv. “Mon Roi” filmmaker Maiwenn is directing the movie, which Variety reported earlier this year is filming this summer for three months at locations that include the Versailles Palace. Maiwenn is also starring in the movie as Jeanne du Barry, a countess who was Louis Xv’s last mistress.

Exclusive: Sundance Selects has acquired U.S. rights to French director Jacques Audiard’s latest, currently untitled, feature film.
The film, currently shooting, centers on a Sri-Lankan Tamil warrior who flees his war-torn country and seeks asylum in France as a political refugee, posing as a husband and father to two fellow escapees. In the suburbs of Paris, he takes up a position as caretaker of a run-down housing block. His attempt to obtain a stable life is interrupted by the violent gang of the drug dealers that rules the derelict neighborhood. Unwillingly drawn into the conflict, the former soldier must make a difficult choice whether to take a violent path once more.
Audiard’s two previous films, Un Prophete and Rust And Bone, were acquired for the U.S. by Sony Pictures Classics. Audiard, one of France’s most acclaimed filmmakers, is known for his appreciation of American cinema.

Paris -- Jacques Audiard's prison drama "A Prophet" (Un Prophete) won nine awards, including French film of the year and best director, during the 35th annual Cesar Awards ceremony.
"Prophet" star Tahar Rahim won the best actor and most promising actor prizes Saturday at the Chatelet Theatre for his role as a young Arab man sent to French prison who eventually gains power among the reigning Corsican mafia. "Long live French cinema," Rahim proclaimed as he accepted his second prize.
French actress-singer Vanessa Paradis presented the director prize to Audiard, who thanked the Academy before launching into a politically charged talk about France's immigrant population.
Niels Arestrup, no stranger to Audiard's films, was named best supporting actor for his performance in "Prophet."
