The Academy’s Board of Governors has approved the new awards rules and campaign regulations for the 97th Oscars ceremony to be held on March 2.
Significant changes have been made in the original score category. Now, up to three composers can receive individual Oscar statuettes if they all significantly contribute to a film’s music. This marks a departure from previous rules that required composers to submit as a group, such as the band Son Lux for the nomination for the best picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, winners for the animated film “Soul” (2020), also received a single statuette. The definition of a group has been specified to include a recognized band. Additionally, the shortlist in this category has been expanded from 15 to 20 titles, which will be announced in late December before the official nomination voting period begins in January.

On Monday, some sharp-eyed members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences were surprised by a small but perhaps significant twist in an invitation to recommend recipients for the next round of honorary Oscars.
That is, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, historically given to those whose “humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry,” is now described as recognizing those whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit “by promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities.”
An Academy spokesperson declined comment on the change, and it wasn’t immediately clear how “inequities” or their rectification would be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors, which periodically grants the award at the annual Governors Awards banquet.
The next Governors Awards is set for Sunday, November 17, and members are invited to recommend possible recipients by April 19. The most recent Hersholt winner was Michelle Satter, who was recognized for her work with the Sundance Institute.

One of the biggest challenges of the Sundance Film Festival is trying to fit it all in and be everywhere all at once in Park City. On Sunday morning at The Park, a group of festival insiders stayed in one place for about two hours to take in a keynote from Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Oscar-winning producer Jonathan Wang and witness two producers being singled out with awards and $10,000 grants.
It all went down as part of a producers award collaboration between the Sundance Institute and Amazon MGM Studios. The prizes — one for fiction, one for nonfiction — were awarded to producers Brad Becker-Parton of Stress Positions and Toni Kamau of The Battle for Laikipia, two films that premiered in this year’s lineup.

On Sunday, January 21, festival attendees gathered to celebrate the unique triumphs and struggles of independent film producers at the Sundance Producers Celebration. In addition to honoring the producers of the films in this year’s festival, the event featured a keynote address from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” producer and frequent Daniels collaborator Jonathan Wang and presented the 2024 Sundance Institute | Amazon Studios Producers Awards.
Brad Becker-Parton (“Stress Positions”) received the Amazon Studios Fiction Producers Award, while Toni Kamau (“The Battle for Laikipia”) received the Amazon Studios Nonfiction Producers Award. IndieWire shares Wang’s keynote exclusively below.
Jonathan Wang: In 2015, I attended Sundance for the first time with an interactive short film called “Possibilia.” It was made by some unknown music-video nerds working under the pretentious pseudonym ‘Daniels.’ All of three people watched the film, two were Daniel Scheinert’s parents, and the third was probably a glitch in the tech.

Last Sundance was marked by a number of new official cultural affinity “houses” at the festival, and they will all be back.
Sunrise Collective, comprised of Daniel Dae Kim’s production banner 3Ad, Gold House and The Asian American Foundation, will again host its Sunrise House for the greater Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community, taking over the restaurant Riverhorse on Main Street during Sundance’s opening weekend, Jan. 19 to 21.
“By creating spaces that cultivate Aanhpi artists, we are building strong conduits for our stories to not only be told, but celebrated,” Taaf CEO Norman Chen said in a statement. “This year we are grateful to work with our special advisors, award-winning filmmakers and Sundance alumni Tanya Selvaratnam and Shruti Ganguly, to develop programming that elevates our collective and diverse voices.”

Michelle Satter, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, has been called “the fairy godmother of independent cinema.” In 1981, she went to work for Robert Redford as the founding director of the Sundance Institute, the labs of which have, in the words of the Associated Press, “helped to launch the first films of many of Hollywood’s top filmmakers,” and, as the Los Angeles Times put it, served as “the premier incubator of indie talent.” She, meanwhile, has been described by our own publication as “a uniquely nurturing presence in an industry that more often than not mocks creativity and trivializes risk-taking.” And Interview magazine declared, “As a film fan, you might not know her name, but if you’re a filmmaker, you certainly do.”
To that point, consider what some alumni of the Sundance labs have said about her…

Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton received honorary Oscars, while the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter was bestowed with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
In addition to honoring legends, the Governors Awards are an opportunity for contenders to make an impression ahead of voting with the Board of Governors and other AMPAS members in attendance. It was back to business as usual at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood, as this year’s strike-postponed Governors Awards finally unfolded January 9. With preparations for the March 10 Oscars under way with a new set of producers (and an hour earlier start time), the Governors Awards honored Mel Brooks, Angela Bassett, editor Carol Littleton, and Sundance veteran Michelle Satter while giving Oscar contenders a chance to work a room packed with AMPAS voters.
These awards used to be presented at the Oscars ceremony, but they demanded 45 minutes of screen time. Now it makes do with a montage of the Governors Awards presentation.
The Governors Awards usually take place in November and function as a black-tie starting gun to Oscar season. It also provides the Academy with a revenue-generating event as studios buy tables and pack them with that year’s Oscar-bound talent. The delay didn’t impact that energy.

The Governors Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is always one of the annual Hollywood nights I look forward to, one that delivers Honorary Oscars in a non-televised but always warm, fun, and inspiring evening. I have attended every single one of them, and even wrote the 2nd Governors Awards, but I have to say Tuesday night’s 14th annual ceremony had an extra personal and devastatingly heartfelt kick to it, quite unforeseen when the Academy’s Board Of Governors announced their honorees – 97-year-old Mel Brooks, Film Editor Carol Littleton, Angela Bassett, and Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter – way back on June 26.
The ceremony as it usually is, was set for a mid-November date, the 18th but due to the unpredictability of the writers and actors strikes was moved to January 9. Sadly life intervened in the meantime. Littleton’s husband and former AMPAS President, cinematographer John Bailey...

Jameelah Michl, a 36-year-old woman who appeared as an extra in Focus Features’ “A Thousand and One,” Rockwell’s directorial debut that won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, has been charged with breaking into Latt’s home and shooting him.
A press release from the prosecution accused her of targeting Latt, the son of longtime Sundance Institute director Michelle Satter, “for being friends with a woman she had been stalking.”
Latt publicly linked himself to Rockwell when he posted on his personal Instagram account about attending the Sundance premiere of “A Thousand and One.”

The woman charged in the death of Hollywood marketing consultant Michael Latt also stalked a film director and repeatedly threatened suicide, according to a court filing.
Jameelah Michl, 36, has been charged with murder and burglary for allegedly breaking into Latt’s home on Monday and shooting him. Prosecutors stated in a press release on Thursday that she targeted Latt “for being friends with a woman she had been stalking.”
The D.A.’s office did not identify the woman. But according to court records, director A.V. Rockwell obtained a restraining order against Michl after receiving a series of disturbing emails and handwritten messages from her earlier this year.
The Los Angeles Times first reported on the restraining order.
According to the records, Michl worked as a stand-in and a background actor on Rockwell’s feature debut, “A Thousand and One,” which won the grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

The suspect in the killing of former Netflix staffer and Array consultant Michael Latt this week has been revealed by the LAPD, as has the victim himself.
The police say Jameelah Elena Michl was arrested on Latt’s doorstep soon after the fatal shooting of the veteran studio operative and activist at his mid-Wilshire home at 6 p.m. November 27. Apparently living nearby in her car, the homeless woman had seemingly invaded the residence of Latt and his girlfriend on Monday evening. She did not make any effort to leave the scene of the crime, law enforcement officials confirmed.
Latt died soon afterwards at nearby hospital.
Still investigating the killing of Latt, 33, the LAPD tells Deadline no motive has emerged yet. Michl was arrested by officers from Wilshire Division and remained in custody on $3 million bail.

America Ferrera thinks the future is bright for women filmmakers despite the uphill challenges they face in Hollywood.
Recapturing the magic of her viral monologue in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” film, Ferrera delivered a moving speech as the keynote presenter during the Academy’s annual women’s luncheon presented by Chanel on Thursday that prompted a minutes-long standing ovation. Ferrera’s remarks focused on the importance of fellowship and how the impact of a union of voices can make waves within the industry.
“Community is not something that we can or should take for granted — and I would like us to consider that growing and strengthening this community might be the key to moving this industry,” she told the crowd.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors awards are moving from Nov. 18 to Jan. 9 amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, editor Carol Littleton and the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter are set to be honored at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. The Tuesday ceremony will take place two days after the Golden Globes.
The Governors awards is a union production, so the Academy is working with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA to monitor the situation.
The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”
Satter is receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an Oscar statuette, which is given “to an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.

In what is clearly a strike-related delay, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has moved the 14th Annual Governors Awards forward two months to Tuesday, January 9, 2024, still to be held at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The Academy’s official press release made no mention of a reason for the delay, but sources have been telling me discussions have been in the works and it is clearly due to the strike situation which continues to wreak havoc to many aspects of the industry and its events.
The ceremony, presenting honorary Oscars to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, editor Carol Littleton, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter, had originally been set for Saturday, November 18 where it would have been in its usual position to also serve as a prime kickoff for the campaign season, as studios and distributors buy tables and fill them with their Oscar contenders.

The Academy’s 14th Governors Awards, at which Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton are set to receive honorary Oscars and Michelle Satter the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, has been pushed from its previously announced date of Nov. 18, 2023, to Jan. 9, 2024, in the hope that the ongoing actors and writers strikes will be resolved by then.
Though the Governors Awards is a non-televised gala dinner that is put together by a union crew and probably would not have been picketed by the striking guilds if it moved forward in November, it likely would have run into other issues.
The Governors Awards are held in the thick of Oscar season because the Academy calculated — rather brilliantly, it turned out — that scheduling it for then would make it a hot spot for big names currently in Oscar contention to be seen/photographed/mingle with Academy members. For years, much of the film industry has considered Sundance as a ’90s legacy, one most famous for launching the festival that cemented a market for American independent film. However, the seeds for that phenomenon were sown in the previous decade.
Hollywood raced into the ’80s with its blockbuster juices flowing, as the box-office sensations of “Jaws” and then “Star Wars” rejuvenated the studio confidence in mass-market commercial storytelling, and the prospects of small-scale independent filmmaking seemed more marginalized than ever. Enter Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute, which launched its first feature film lab in 1981, and created a seminal resource for working outside the system still unparalleled in the U.S. today.
In the midst of the studios getting a second wind, Redford felt unnerved. Though the movie star made a successful pivot to directing with “Ordinary People” in 1980, he had long felt that Hollywood underserved movies made with an economy of means.

Few things in Hollywood haven’t been impacted by the first simultaneous strikes of writers and actors in more than 60 years — indeed, much of the town has come to a complete standstill. With speculation that the work stoppage could go on for the rest of 2023, organizers of many upcoming industry events are being forced to consider how, or even if, they can proceed.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is no exception. It is the organization behind not only the annual Academy Awards, but also numerous other major events at which, in normal times, writers and actors cross paths with executives. Two — the Academy’s Museum Gala and the Governors Awards — historically have taken place in the fall, but this year are very much in jeopardy.

Two decades after winning the 1981 Best Director Oscar for “Ordinary People,” Robert Redford was given an honorary Academy Award for being an “inspiration to independent and innovative filmmakers everywhere.” He was partly chosen for this tribute because of his work as the founder and president of the Sundance Institute, which has fostered the growth of emerging creatives for over 40 years. Now, one of his original Sundance colleagues, founding senior director Michelle Satter, has been named the next recipient of the academy’s prestigious Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Angela Bassett will receive an Oscar this year, after all.
