In January, AT&T announced that DirecTV’s Audience Network was shutting down, transforming itself into an HBO Max Preview Channel. While not surprising, the move threw in limbo three original series on the channel: comedy Loudermilk and dramas Condor and Mr. Mercedes.
While David E. Kelley’s Mr. Mercedes had just wrapped its Season 3 run on Audience, with its future beyond that in serious doubt, Loudermilk and Condor both had completed new seasons in the can that had not yet been scheduled by the network. As Audience ceased to exist n May 22, the rights to its original series were handed back to their producers.
The three existing seasons of Mr. Mercedes were recently acquired by NBCUniversal’s Peacock, while Netflix picked up another Audience drama, Kingdom, which aired on the network from 2014-2017.

Project Blue Book has been sealed away in the proverbial Area 51 of cancelation by cable channel History after two seasons on the air.
History’s Project Blue Book cancelation, reported via Deadline, occurs a little over a month after its March 24 airing of the show’s Season 2 finale, which ended things with the renewal-entreating device of a cliffhanger regarding the fate of one of its two main characters. However, for reasons not yet known, the network didn’t bite, instead opting not to renew the series, which was a production of A+E Studios and Compari Entertainment. The network also confirmed the long-expected news of its cancelation of medieval series Knightfall.
The aforementioned Season 2 finale, “Operation Mainbrace,” utilized the backdrop of escalating Cold War tensions to place our tenacious investigative duo—the biographically-based Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Aidan Gillen) and fictionalized fact-based representation U.S. Air Force Captain Michael Quinn (Michael Malarkey)—in a classic cliffhanger scenario,...

Project Blue Book fans will be left with a few questions after History cancelled the Aidan Gillen-fronted drama.
The second season of the UFO drama ended on March 24 with Gillen’s Dr. Allen Hynek searching for his colleague Capt. Michael Quinn, played by Michael Malarkey, who was evidently blown to bits by an underwater explosion.
However, the A+E Networks’ cable network has opted not to pursue a third season of the show.
The show was created by David O’Leary, who served as writer and executive producer alongside writer-showrunner Sean Jablonski, Zemeckis, Jackie Levine and Barry Jossen.
Produced by A+E Studios and Compari Entertainment, Project Blue Book is inspired by the personal experiences of Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Gillen), a brilliant college professor recruited by the U.S. Air Force to spearhead this clandestine operation — Project Blue Book — that researched thousands of cases, more than 700 of which remain unsolved to this day.

Project Blue Book season 2 heads to Roswell and Area 51 with some unexpected twists and turns
Project Blue Book season 2 is underway, and according to the showrunner, is doing its version of The Joker by tackling the origin stories of some of the most famous UFO cases. As seen in the first episodes of the season, the infamous alleged crash of a UFO in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 is the focus of the first arc of the season. Showrunner Sean Jablonski says this season will also feature Area 51.
UFO nerds, like me, will note that the real-life official Air Force UFO research program, Project Blue Book, did not investigate Area 51 or the Roswell UFO crash. However, Jablonski says they felt now that they had introduced their audience to the Project Blue Book program, next would be educating them on the origins of UFO conspiracies.

The inspiration for the General Harding character, Roswell, and Area 51 were topics discussed at the Sdcc Project Blue Book Panel.

Starting off the discussion were O'Leary and Jablonski who say they are looking to have more fun in the second season. This comment likely translates to exploring more fictional storylines. The duo explained they do try to make the show fact and science-based, but feels it also has to be fun.

When “The X-Files” returned for two revival seasons starting in 2016, fans of the classic ’90s series were a bit underwhelmed beyond the initial thrill of seeing Mulder and Scully back in action. Many shows on both broadcast and cable have tried to replicate the indelible success of “The X-Files” and specifically the chemistry between Mulder and Scully but few have come close. History’s “Project Blue Book” is another show drawing clear inspiration from the cult Fox series and might just be the show to scratch your “X-Files” itch.
The series is based on the real Project Blue Book study of the 1950s, which set out to examine the presence of UFOs and determine whether they were a threat to national security. Like “The X-Files,” “Project Blue Book” follows a pair of investigators, one a logically-minded ufologist, Dr. J Allen Hynek and the other an Air Force pilot who relies on gut instinct,...

Syfy has acquired A+E Networks’ sci-fi historical drama “Project Blue Book” for the U.K., it was announced Thursday by Syfy’s parent company, NBC Universal International Networks.
Executive produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, “Project Blue Book” is based on a real-life U.S. government operation of the same name and centers on the investigation by the U.S. Air Force into UFO sightings in the 1950s and ’60s. It was created by writer David O’Leary, who also serves as an executive producer.
Aiden Gillen stars as a brilliant yet underappreciated college astrophysics professor who is recruited to head the clandestine operation. Along with his Air Force captain partner (Michael Malarkey), who is assigned to debunk the stories, he is summoned to investigate UFO sightings around the country and uses science to discover what really happened. Oscar-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis has long been fascinated by the fusion of historical fact with inventive fiction — I Wanna Hold Your Hand, 1941, Back to the Future and, of course, Forrest Gump are a few of his past projects that memorably embroidered fictional characters over historical events.
“That’s one of the things that really grabs me is starting with history and extrapolating events from that history,” Zemeckis said. “It makes things interesting to me when it’s all melted together. And that is why I fell in love with the pitch for Project: Blue Book from the very start.”
That pitch led Zemeckis to his executive producer role for the new UFO-themed drama Project: Blue Book, which premieres tonight on History with a story device that puts the shadowy series in the middle-ground that lies somewhere between In Search Of...

Early in the “Project Blue Book” pilot, astrophysicist Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Aidan Gillen) is telling his wife Mimi (Laura Mennell) why he’s accepted a job debunking UFO sightings for the government. Sure, it’s an extra paycheck for their family of three, and no, he doesn’t have to give up his professorship at the Ohio State University. But the real reason he’s going to travel all over America, explaining away a different alien sighting every week, is because he wants to be recognized for disproving the existence of flying saucers.
Viewers know he failed. “Project Blue Book” is set in the 1950s and inspired by true events, and people are still prattling on about UFO sightings, so… well, you do the math. People may know Dr. Hynek’s name, but it’s clear he never achieved his goal and this show isn’t worth studying to understand why.

The most surprising thing about “Project Blue Book” is that it took so long to become a TV show in the first place. As it will tell you itself at the top of every episode, History’s new scripted drama is “based on true events,” or at least the recorded instances of possible UFO sightings and the Air Force’s subsequent investigations during the 1950’s and ’60s. Each week, a new case sparks new intrigue, both about the potential of both alien life and a government conspiracy to cover it up. All the while, the Cold War looms ominously, infusing everyone with a deep unease and paranoia they can’t shake no matter how hard they try to stave it all off.
In this way, “Project Blue Book” sets itself up to be a period piece “X Files,” a reliable formula that would be hard to fumble completely. That inspiration...

One of my most anticipated shows of 2019 is a new UFO investigation drama series Project Blue Book. This show looks awesome! I especially like that it feels like a retro 1950s version of The X-Files. I’ve got four new trailers for the series for you to watch today that offer some more new footage and teases some of the stories that it will tell.
For those of you who have watched all the UFO documentaries and series on the History Channel, I’m sure you know all about what Project Book Book is. If not:

Exclusive: Now this has a familiar ring to it: Robert Zemeckis is revisiting the 1950s to rewrite history with one new project and then he’s going back to the future to prove the power of love with a second project.
No, Zemeckis isn’t revving up the DeLorean for more Marty McFly sequels — however, the director of the Back to the Future trilogy (1985-1990) and Contact (1997) is making a relatively rare return to science fiction with the two projects. This time around, however, his foray into the genre is in a producing role. On Monday, Zemeckis talked about the two projects: Bios, the upcoming feature film; and Project Blue Book, a television series that premieres in January on History.
Bios, scheduled to start filming early next year, reunites Zemeckis with one of his most celebrated collaborators. “We’re producing a really magnificent science fiction project called Bios with Tom Hanks,...

It started with a long-ago conversation with astronomer Carl Sagan, which awoke an abiding interest in UFOs and the possibility of extraterrestrial life in Robert Zemeckis. That led in part to 1997’s “Contact,” which Zemeckis helmed, and, now, “Project Blue Book,” which he’s executive producing for A+E Studios.

Project Blue Book is inspired by the personal experiences of Dr. J. Allen Hynek (Gillen), a brilliant college professor recruited by the Air Force to spearhead the titular clandestine operation that researched thousands of cases — more than 700 of which remain unsolved to this day. We're at a transitional phase in American history, and The Man in the High Castle is following suit.
Just as it has recently been difficult to watch programs such as the recently departed, award-winning The Americans, the science-fiction alternate reality of Colony, and the world we never want to become on Emmy-winning The Handmaid's Tale. The Man in the High Castle forces viewers to think.
In the alternate aftermath of World War II in which the Axis won dividing the United States into the Japanese Pacific States, the Neutral Zone, and Nazi America, it's not easy living for those now living in the territories. Even those fully converted with their oppressors struggle to accept what was with what is.
The Man in the High Castle Season 3 continues the exploration of that conflict as the series also moved head-first into more standard science fiction fare. It's unclear how fully immersed in...

Littlefinger’s gotten himself into something a little creepy. In the first trailer for History’s Project Blue Book, Game of Thrones alum Aidan Gillen, playing astrophysicist and UFO skeptic J. Allen Hynek, is asked by Uncle Sam to disprove the existence of little green men — which turns out to be a hell of a lot easier said than done.
The 1950s-set drama, created by David O’Leary and executive-produced by Robert Zemeckis, orbits Hynek’s efforts on behalf of the Air Force to, per the show’s official logline, “spearhead [a] clandestine operation that researched thousands of cases [of UFO sightings], many of which were never solved.
