When you wish upon a star, it doesn’t matter how original you are. That’s certainly Disney’s hope at the beginning of the new, Robert Zemeckis-directed Pinocchio. The film marks the latest “live-action” remake of a classic from the Walt Disney Animation Studios catalog. And in this case, it’s pulling from one of the oldest.
Walt Disney’s original Pinocchio was only the second feature-length film made by his animation house after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from three years earlier. Pinocchio is also where the Walt Disney Company got its unofficial theme song, “When You Wish Upon a Star.” To this day, you usually hear an orchestral version of the tune every time you see a new Disney movie that gets the banner logo title card at the beginning. But in the case of Zemeckis’ Pinocchio, the traditional fanfare is interrupted when a digitally...

Director Michael Matthews and writer Sean Drummond were drawn to the landscapes of South Africa’s Eastern Cape while traveling their homeland, especially the echoes of classic cinematic western environments. Learning about how its current towns arose — from the ashes of Apartheid-era cities mimicking European capitals by name — only cemented the comparison, each a product of the locals taking control once their oppressors left after their government changed hands and the train lines shutdown. This new frontier became the pair’s setting, their story gelling after seven years of research and development to do right by the inhabitants’ history and struggles. Sprinkle in a bit of legend and lore to create an antihero hidden beneath rage and Five Fingers for Marseilles was born.
The title describes a quintet of childhood friends caught within Apartheid’s grip. Too young to feel the effects as greatly as their defeated parents, they’re...

Given how revered Disney's "Pinocchio" is today, it's hard to believe it was a flop when it was first released exactly three quarters of a century ago. Upon its New York City premiere, on February 7, 1940, critics hailed the film as a masterpiece, and even to this day, many prefer it to Disney's pioneering first animated feature, 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Yet it took the film many years and multiple re-releases to make a profit.
Today, of course, the legacy of "Pinocchio" is inescapable. Everyone's image of the puppet-boy with the nose that grows when he lies comes not from Carlo Collodi's original novel but from the kid with the Tyrolean hat and the Mickey Mouse gloves, as drawn by Disney animators. And the opening tune, Jiminy Cricket's "When You Wish Upon a Star," is ubiquitous as the theme music played before every Walt Disney movie and home video release.

12 Years a Slave movie math: Django Unchained minus… wait, that’s not right. Gone With the Wind plus… nope, won’t do it either. Huh. Maybe (Roots + Honest John’s scene in Pinocchio) - 540 minutes?

At this point — after 12 Years a Slave wowed audiences and critics at the Toronto Film Festival and some Oscar handicappers have pronounced the Best Picture race all but over — it does Steve McQueen’s film no good to pile on additional adulation, which will only raise expectations even higher. Put simply: Based on the 1853 memoir of Solomon Northup, a New York man (Chiwetel Ejiofor) kidnapped and smuggled into Southern slavery, 12 Years is a powerful viewing experience that not only demonstrates the brutality of American slavery like no other Hollywood movie before, but also presents a panorama of the moral tapestry...

Being a professional obsessive might make me a social pariah, but it does offer me the opportunity to trawl the internet looking for my worldly fix with relative impunity – “what! This is work!” And even more importantly, it introduces me to some extremely cool stuff. Stuff that I will invariably buy on my own recommendation, or at least leave major hints to loved ones that I need them for Christmas of my birthday. Both of which are coming up, just in case you’re reading this, Mum… Anyway, a wise man once said that the important things in life aren’t things, but I would put it to him that he obviously hadn’t seen Disney’s Villain Vinylmations, or Sideshow Toys’ Batman busts, or Derek Deal’s posters, the big idiot. Luckily, no one here shares his false philosophies, so here are all of those lovely things below… 1. Disney Vinylmation Villains Series 2 Vinylmations. Just...

Pinocchio is now the oldest movie I own on Blu-ray with Casablanca being the second oldest by two years. However, watching the film you would never assume it was 69-years-old (for some reason this is called the 70th Anniversary edition though). It is a testament to Disney's storage and restoration process considering I have films on DVD from the '50s that don't look half as good. Disney has followed up on the terrific transfer of last year's Sleeping Beauty on Blu-ray with another gem in Pinocchio and it makes me look forward that much more to reviewing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when it debuts on Blu-ray this Fall. Owning these films on high-definition Blu-ray makes you feel like you are taking part in preserving film history and I am not sure these films will ever look better. I don't see how they could. This was the first...

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0 Chicago – The Blu-Ray revolution seems stuck in neutral. It’s going to take a major title to push it over the edge as a must-have technology. Some of us thought it would be “The Dark Knight,” “Iron Man,” or “The Godfather,” but the worsening economic times seem to have put the HD switch on hold. The first title of 2009 that could be at least part of the Blu-Ray tipping point is Disney’s amazing 70th Anniversary Edition release of “Pinocchio”.
Walt Disney Home Video has long-produced great DVDs, but what they’ve been doing in the world of Blu-Ray is truly remarkable. Their release of “Sleeping Beauty” was undeniably one of the best of 2008 and they have an early frontrunner for top ten lists at the end of 2009 in the nearly-as-good “Pinocchio”.
Pinocchio will be released on Blu-Ray on March 10th, 2009.
