Bette Midler is finally revealing why “The First Wives Club” didn’t get a second shot.
The classic 1996 film starred Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn as a trio of jilted women who seek revenge on their respective former spouses. Midler’s “Hocus Pocus 2” co-star Sarah Jessica Parker played the mistress Midler’s husband (Dan Hedaya) was cheating with in the film.
Stockard Channing, Maggie Smith, Rob Reiner, Marcia Gay Harden, Victor Garberm Timothy Olyphant, J.K. Simmons, Jon Stewart, and Gloria Steinem also starred. Based on the 1992 novel by Olivia Goldsmith, the Hugh Wilson-directed comedy grossed 180 million at the global box office. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music.
Now, over 25 years later, Midler opened up about why the studio did not greenlight a sequel.
“I used to lobby for ‘First Wives Club 2,’ but there were political reasons they didn’t want to do that again.

Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, and Goldie Hawn all together in one movie — they just don’t make ’em like they used to. This delectable trio would have been plenty to float even a middling script, but no one does fabulous women of a certain age like “Steel Magnolias” and “Soapdish” scribe Robert Harling. Released in 1996, when mid-budget studio comedies were still commonplace, “The First Wives Club” delivered a surprise hit for Paramount while reigniting the careers of its “middle-aged” stars. Though it received mixed reviews at the time, “The First Wives Club” has found many fans over the years, and for good reason: Like its trio-of-women-led predecessor “9 to 5,” the movie delivers its message of women’s empowerment with old-school Hollywood farce and eminently quotable brash one-liners.

Another Viacom series is switching networks — First Wives Club, which was slated to debut on Paramount Network in January, will instead air on sibling Bet.
At Paramount Network, First Wives Club starring Ryan Michelle Bathe, Jill Scott and Michelle Buteau was slated to launch the network’s new Thursday dramedy night in January. It was be followed by Younger Season 6 and new series Emily in Paris, both from Darren Star, slated to debut on the same night in spring and summer, respectively.
I hear the concept for a dramedy-branded night on Paramount Network is now being reevaluated, along with the future of Younger and Emily in Paris on the network. The former had been a hit on TV Land for five seasons and, while the comedy-focused Viacom channel recently canceled its last remaining original scripted series, Teachers, it left the door open to featuring such content in the future.

Exclusive: Paramount Network has given a pilot green light to First Wives Club, a half-hour comedy from Girls Trip co-writer Tracy Oliver and Paramount Television.
The project, based on the popular 1996 film from Paramount Pictures, marks the first pilot order for Paramount Network, which launched in January, succeeding Spike. The Viacom network started off with several straight-to-series orders but its executives had stressed that they were also open to the pilot development model.
First Wives Club also marks the Paramount Network’s first collaboration with sibling production company Paramount Television, whose series portfolio includes Epix’s Berlin Station, Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, USA’s Shooter and TNT’s The Alienist. Closer ties and more cooperation among the different divisions has been a key mandate at Viacom following the company’s restructuring a year ago.

The director of Police Academy and The First Wives Club, Hugh Wilson, has died.
In a 1995 episode of The Simpsons, Homer Simpson is trying to teach his son, Bart, a lesson. Thus, when he hears of him stealing, Homer tries to get across the importance of law and order, with the classic line “why do you think I took you to see all those "Police Academy" movies, for fun? I didn't hear anyone laughing, did you?”.
It’s a sign of how the Police Academy films became a subject of ridicule themselves, which in turn overlooks just what a hit-out-of-nowhere the original movie was. Much of that was down to the work of Hugh Wilson, who died today at the age of 74.
Wilson’s background was in writing, albeit harbouring ambitions to direct. After earning his stripes with the hit sitcom Wkrp – that he created and wrote...

The original movie was released in 1996 and was directed by Hugh Wilson. It was based on the novel of the same name by Olivia Goldsmith which was published in 1992. Now that summer is here (yes, I know not technically, but as far as I'm concerned summer begins when June does), I am thinking that it would be good to have a theme for some of the Cbr posts this summer: Summer Reads. I don't know about you, but summer vacations-especially when I go to the beach-are when I have some of my best opportunities to finally make a dent in my reading list. And I often make a trip to the library before heading out on vacation. I'd like to be able to give the Pajibans a bunch of recommendations as they may be looking to add to their summer reading lists.
Of course to do this, I need your help. I would like you to send me links to any reviews you've written for...

The First Wives Club author Olivia Goldsmith has died of complications following plastic surgery. The 54-year-old - real name Justine Rendal - had been in a coma for more than eight days after she checked into a New York clinic on January 7 for elective plastic surgery. Her lawyer Steven Mintz says, "We are saddened to announce the passing of Justine Rendal. It was her wish to donate organs to provide future life and comfort to others." Problems arose when Goldsmith was administered anesthesia before the operation, and she was transferred to another hospital, where she died Thursday. Mintz continues, "She clearly died from injuries associated with the anaesthesia problem. It's very sad. The whole thing is just terrible." The First Wives Club was made into a hit 1996 movie starring Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler. Goldsmith had recently completed two new novels, Dumping Billy and Casting Off.
