London, July 4 (Ians) Australian batter Travis Head has revealed that Jonny Bairstow almost stumped him the exact same way as Alex Carey, when he was walking out after an over in the first Test of Ashes 2023.
On the fifth day of the second Test, Bairstow left his ground, believing the ball to be dead and the over to have concluded but wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw at the stumps and the Australian was given out and the visitors eventually won by 43 runs.
Speaking on LiSTNR’s Willow Talk podcast, Head revealed he and Bairstow were involved in a conversation about a first Test moment where the English keeper almost did the exact same thing.
“Jonny wasn’t too pleased. And I sort of reminded Jonny last week I walked out of my crease at the end of an over. I quickly whipped my bat back and questioned Jonny on whether he...

Warning: This contains spoilers for Not Going Out
Back in 2015, during a BBC Breakfast interview about series seven of Not Going Out, presenter Bill Turnbull asked Lee Mack: “Did you ever imagine when you first got that pilot that you’d get seven series?”
“I didn’t think we’d even get a series,” Mack answers incredulously, explaining that even going from script to a pilot episode felt like “the biggest hurdle”.
And yet, eight years later (17 since the show began in 2006), Not Going Out has now almost doubled its series from seven to 13, still regularly pulling in audiences of over four million, with the newest series arriving on BBC One on Friday 23rd June at 9pm. As ever, the show will focus on Lee Mack as a fictionalised version of himself, alongside his landlady-turned-wife and sparring partner Lucy, and their eventful and often farcical life together.

It’s a tricky proposition to talk to director Benjamin Caron about his new movie “Sharper.” Not because it doesn’t elicit conversation — there is so much in the wickedly smart thriller to discuss, from the plot that keeps you guessing to the fantastic cast, to Caron himself, who never expected to be a film director. But the movie, opening in U.S. theaters this weekend before hitting Apple TV+ and U.K. theaters on Feb. 17, is best experienced when one goes in knowing as little as possible.

Dawn French has joked that she wants to be embalmed and buried in a perspex coffin with the word “slut” written on it.
French appeared on the premiere episode of Kathy Burke’s new podcast, Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wake, released on Tuesday (29 November). The podcast sees Burke asking celebrity guests about their imagined deaths and funerals.
The Vicar of Dibley star, 65, opened up about how she would like her corpse to be presented when she dies.
Speaking about the circumstances behind her death, French said she would like to die “Tommy Cooper-style” on stage.
In 1984, Cooper died of a heart attack in front of millions of television viewers during his act on the Royal Variety show.
French then divulged what her dream funeral procession would look like, which includes a see-through “Barbie” hearse.
She joked: “I’m humble… I’m low-key. I’d like a see-through hearse,...

Monty Norman, the composer behind the iconic James Bond theme, has died at the age of 94.
A statement posted on his official website said, “It is with sadness we share the news that Monty Norman died on 11th July 2022 after a short illness.”
Norman most famously composed the score for “Dr. No,” the 1962 James Bond film starring Sean Connery. His theme for James Bond, as arranged by fellow Englishman John Barry, would go on to become the theme for the entire franchise.
As Norman said on his site, “We recognized we needed a fresh, contemporary sound for the main theme, and in the up-and-coming young John Barry we found a wonderful arranger, so the whole thing worked very well.”
But controversy erupted decades later when Barry claimed authorship of the theme, resulting in Norman suing the Times of London for libel over a 1997 story (“Theme Tune Wrangle Has 007 Shaken and...

While many may welcome watching Russell Crowe misplace his marbles and embark on a people pummeling spree across Louisiana, one would hope such a concept is crafted with at least a dash of decorum. Sadly, Unhinged is a painfully inept and wonky display of unjustifiably wanton ultra-violence, clunky gaucheness with an awkwardly unfocused message about inner city mental health, buried beneath the bunkum.
The opening credit sequence suggests we’re in a time tinkering on civil unrest with people cracking under the weight of societal/psychological pressures, but its pertinence is lost amongst contrivances, defects and ridiculous set-pieces.
Crowe’s pill-popping, booze/person slugging psychotic “Tom Cooper” (Tommy Cooper would’ve been better) wanes from moderate miff into raging maniac pushed by society and circumstance into psychosis, with hammer and petrol canister. Cooper erupts like a Krakatoa of testosterone at single mother/hair stylist Rachel (Caren Pistorius) mid traffic while...

Talk to any performer, and they probably have a horror story about the time they died on stage. It was a bad crowd, bad night, bad material, the venue wasn’t right.
But now, there’s a book actually devoted to those who have, literally, died on stage. The Show Won’t Go On: The Most Shocking, Bizarre, and Historic Deaths of Performers Onstage (Chicago Review Press), by Jeff Abraham and Burt Kearns, is the first comprehensive study of onstage deaths. Unearthed details, little-known facts, and anecdotes reveal the truth about the final curtain call that ended many artists’ lives. The book arrives on Sept. 3.
The book chronicles Albert Brooks’s father, comedian Harry “Parkyakarkus” Einstein, to high-wire walker Karl Wallenda, rock star Dimebag Darrell Abbott, to rapper Jax the Axehandler. It also covers Tommy Cooper, who died on live television, and cult ukulele crooner Tiny Tim and J.I.

20 year old newcomer Sally Messham, a final year student at Rada, has been cast as Jane Watkins, the daughter of exorcist Merrily, in ITV Encore’s new three-part drama Midwinter of the Spirit.
Sally (represented by Curtis Brown), will leave Rada early to take up the role alongside the double BAFTA award-winning actress Anna Maxwell-Martin who leads the cast as Merrily Watkins, a single mother who isn’t your average country vicar.
Merrily’s newly acquired training has put her on the dark side of the pulpit. She’s become one of the few women priests working as an exorcist - a job increasingly mistrusted by the modern Church and rarely talked about, even though it operates in virtually every diocese in the UK.

In the '80s, we got Countdown and Channel 4. In the '90s, we got the Spice Girls and Channel 5. In the '00s, we got Dave and Top Gear repeats.
And in the whatever-we-call-this-decade, we've got ITVBe and Towie. Lots and lots of Towie.
Not content with ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4, the broadcaster launches ITVBe this evening, a home for "entertainment and lifestyle" programming. That basically means more Towie.
Who would want to miss this momentous moment in broadcasting history? All the big guns - Jamelia, Mark Wright and Denise Van Outen - are involved at some point tonight, and we'll be sticking it out for the duration.
We'll be live blogging the whole evening from the Peter Andre kick-off at 7pm to the closing of the reem Towie party at 11pm - just dipping out in time to avoid Joe Swash on Celebrity Dinner Date.

Who thought we'd ever reach the day that we'd be watching The X Factor and wonder, 'Seriously, I'd love to hear what Louis Walsh thinks.'
The X Factor's club mascot has barely been seen in the first five episodes of the new series, reduced merely to giggling and guffawing on the sidelines at every Simon Cowell one-liner, as if the high-trousered one is the lovechild of Eric Morecambe and Tommy Cooper.
If Walsh has barely been noticable, Dermot O'Leary has been like a TV version of Where's Wally. There hasn't even been room for his famous bulge to spin its way onto the screen.
On the Live Shows, he may be more slick than scintillating, but he's not even had the chance to wheel out his usual monster hugs at the auditions this year. Poor old Derm's been reduced to a role shorter than James Arthur's record career.

Given how the live shows have played out, we're thinking this series of Bgt should be renamed Britain's Got Mainly Singers And Dancers With A Hot Magician And A Crazy Violinist Thrown In.

Looks like we're gonna have to rely on the wildcard to add some variety to Simon Cowell's variety show. Will the lucky act get announced tonight? Who knows? - it's Britain's Got Talent, anything could happen! Join Digital Spy when Bgt returns at 7pm...

London, April 21: Late actor Tommy Cooper is the subject of a controversial new film "Tommy Cooper: Not Like That, Like This" that depicts him as an alcohlic wife-beater -- which his daughter Vicky says is "all lies".
The show will be aired on ITV drama, reports contactmusic.com.
Vicky said she felt shut out of discussions about the script.
"If my father were alive, he'd be disgusted people were cashing in on his memory like this. He would be utterly horrified to see how he's been portrayed as a vicious and violent alcoholic," she told Sunday Mirror.
The character of Tommy is played by "Shameless" star.

Mark Kermode reviews Under the Skin
There is something very levelling about seeing a major Hollywood star walking past Primark. And not just any Hollywood star but Scarlett Johansson, twice crowned Esquire's "Sexiest Woman Alive", three times Woody Allen muse, Bafta winner, noted beauty. Yet, there she is, in her latest film, in a pair of stonewashed jeans and a fake fur coat, walking down a busy shopping street in Glasgow and, well, blending in. She looks normal. Ordinary, even. Strip a star of their Hollywood get-up, remove them from their Bel Air mansions, and it turns out that they look just like the rest of us.

"Like a Cumberland sausage chasing the mustard." "I wish there was some jive to judge." "It was a little bit like the weather - cloudy, grey and dismal."
Dave Myers's Halloween jive didn't exactly float the Strictly Come Dancing judges' boats last weekend. Rock bottom of the leaderboard again and with many of the weakest dancers already culled from the competition, it came as a surprise to see Dave survive the dreaded Dance Off yet again.
Countdown's Rachel Riley and one of the bookies' favourites to win the series, Abbey Clancy, were the duo asked to perform again on the Results Show. For some viewers, the fact that Clancy could have been voted out of the show before the Hairy Biker is unfathomable.
Six weeks into the competition, Myers is still always at least two steps behind his pro dance partner Karen Hauer. From his funky chicken cha cha...

5. Ashley Taylor Dawson and Ola Jordan
Ashley suffered marks-wise from going first, was forced to wear a hideous pink shirt and Dave Arch's band did their best to savage the One Direction backing track in what must have been a secret attempt to subconsciously undermine Simon Cowell and The X Factor. But despite all of this, the Hollyoaks star impressed us a lot with this cheeky cha cha cha.
Bonus marks for an Ola Jordan bum wiggle.
4. Dave Myers and Karen Hauer
Have you ever drunkenly danced around a club or a bedroom and thought that you were The Man, The Dude, The Sex? Yeah, that. We love you, Dave Myers.
Bonus marks for the repeated Tommy Cooper 'just like that' hand gestures.
3. Natalie Gumede and Artem Chigvintsev
The weird Boney M/Russian vibe thing didn't generate much chemistry between Natalie and Artem, but it was about as technically...

He may be reviled, but the highest-earning comedian around is this era's Tommy Cooper or Eric Morecambe … and a class act
Title: Live and Laughing
Year: 2008
The set-up: Is it provocative to say that Michael McIntyre is a great stand-up comedian? Certainly there is a mould of greatness that he doesn't fit. The outsider, the fearless truth-teller, born brilliant, but struggling commercially and personally because he can't shake off his destiny to challenge the complacent world ... This a noble calling, but it's not his.
McIntyre is an ex-public schoolboy (albeit one who had to leave after his parents ran out of money). He is a multi-multimillionaire, now said to be the highest-earning stand-up comedian in the world. He is Mr Mainstream, famous for his (relatively) clean material, and promoted on television. This, McIntyre's first DVD, was the fastest-selling debut DVD there'd ever been. It is a rough analogy, but in...

The Girls creator hits back at a porn parody of her comedy show, Doug Stanhope wades into the Oklahoma God debate, and Dutch TV is slammed for satirising the Woolwich murder
This week's comedy news
In a week when Jerry Lewis told the world that female comedy "bothers [him]", two tales of fightback – of a sort. Girls creator Lena Dunham has criticised news of a pornographic parody movie of her hit HBO comedy. "Most TV shows have been turned into gross and weird porn parodies," the Splitsider website tells us, but Dunham isn't prepared to shrug this one off. "Girls is, at its core, a feminist action while [the XXX film's producer] Hustler is a company that markets and monetises a male's idea of female sexuality," wrote Dunham. And also, "a big reason I engage in (simulated) on-screen sex [in Girls] is to counteract a skewed idea of that act created by the proliferation of porn."

Shameless star David Threlfall will play Tommy Cooper in a single ITV drama based on the comedian's life.
The two-hour film is a Left Bank Pictures production written by Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly) and will also star Amanda Redman as Cooper's wife Dove.
Left Bank Pictures' Andy Harries said: "Few comics have had such a lasting influence on UK culture as Tommy Cooper.
"The man was a comedy giant who spent his final years juggling his hugely successful public persona with a private passion for two women. Just like that."
ITV's director of drama commissioning Steve November added: "Tommy Cooper was an ITV legend and so it feels very fitting to be telling his story on ITV.
"Left Bank have brought together wonderful talent in Simon Nye, David Threlfall and Amanda Redman to tell the story."
The film will focus on Cooper's 17-year affair with his...

Lending her time to a worthy cause, Kate Moss donned a Red Nose t-shirt Monday (February 4) in London to launch Comic Relief 2013.
Posing in black leggings and a white shirt with the image of British comedian Tommy Cooper on it, the supermodel joined other celebs in getting the word out about the charity.
An annual event in Great Britain since its inception in 1988, Red Nose Day helps raise money for those in need throughout the UK and Africa.
This year’s event will take place on March 15, with people gathering funds for the organization by doing something to make someone else laugh.

Review Jamie-Lee Nardone Jan 20, 2013
The Eighth Doctor, aka Paul McGann, tips up on Ripper Street this week. Here's Jamie-Lee's review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 The Good Of This City
Our bloody and brutal Ripper Street has made its way across the pond to BBC America, where it's been the subject of much hype and media attention. Matthew Macfadyen, who plays the lead role of Detective Inspector Reid, has been cited in the papers defending the gore and smut, while Jerome Flynn who plays his right-hand man, Detective Sergeant Drake, has come out with some prime material guaranteed to give the readers of middle-England a touch of the vapours: what was he up to for those lost eight years of his career between Badger and Tommy Cooper and before Game of Thrones and Ripper Street? Well, he was in a sort of religious cult, run by the son of the actor...

Jimmy Savile as a marriage guidance counsellor, David Cameron's texts and 'exotic' Jewishness – just some of the topics that deserve your attention
So I don't know if you've heard but apparently there has been some kind of election going on somewhere in the world. People voting on a prime minister or a prince or a president or something like that? I work in a newspaper office, so I'm pretty in-the-know about world events.
Now, because we still live in the antiquated year of 2012, I am writing this column a whole 24 hours before both the paper and the results come out (in the future, of course, such delays will be laughable and columns will be transmitted instantly from journalists' brains to retina of readers and typing on computers will seem as antiquated as calligraphy in illuminated manuscripts). So the backwards state of our current technology prevents me from sharing my election...

There’s a moment in ‘Nob and Nobility’ from Blackadder the Third in which Blackadder walks into the pantry and angrily kicks the cat. When questioned why, Blackadder remarks that “It is the way of the world, Baldrick – the abused always kick downwards. I am annoyed and so I kick the cat, the cat pounces on the mouse, and finally the mouse bites you on the behind… you are last in God’s great chain, Baldrick, unless there’s an earwig around here you’d like to victimise.”
It’s a good joke from a very good comedy series of which I am a big fan – what sensible person isn’t? But it also reflects a worrying trend which has been creeping slowly into comedy since the 1980s and is now a source of great annoyance and vexation. Put simply: why are so many modern comedies so mean-spirited? Why do...

Comedy writer and actor who starred in 70s sitcom Sykes and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has died after a short illness
From writing a film where the only word uttered is "rhubarb" to creating one of TV's most popular sitcom partnerships, Eric Sykes – who died on Wednesday aged 89 – will be remembered as one of Britain's finest comedy actors and writers.
Tributes came in thick and fast for a man who was seldom off radios, stages or screens in a career spanning 60 years that will spark different memories for different generations.
Some will know him best for writing and directing the silly slapstick film The Plank while others will remember his sitcom partnership with Hattie Jacques, who played his perpetually exasperated sister.
More recently, in the face of near total deafness and blindness, Sykes appeared in the fourth Harry Potter film and, in 2007, the British comedy Son of Rambow.
