FX Boss John Landgraf said today at the network’s TCA day that Ryan Murphy’s American Story spinoff American Sports Story is “heading toward production.”
“We have a fairly complete set of scripts for American Sports Story by Stu Zicherman,” said Landgraf, “We haven’t dated that.”
Announced back in August 2021, along with another spinoff series American Love Story, American Sports Story is a scripted anthological limited series focusing on a prominent event involving a sports figure and re-examines it through the prism of today’s world, telling that story from multiple perspectives.
The first installment is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc from the Boston Globe and Wondery. The limited series charts the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez and explores the connections of the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide, and their legacy in sports and American culture.

The 18-year-old is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their...

Continuing in their thankless quest to blanket the globe with cheap, run-of-the-mill action pictures, forgotten B-movie mastermind Cannon Films released the David Bradley “Bloodsport” knock-off “American Samurai” upon the world at-large way back in the year that was 1992, roughly twelve months before the company officially ceased operation. The film concerns itself greatly with the lukewarm adventures of an American journalist (Bradley) and his slightly spiritual journey into the heart of a ruthless underground “live blade” tournament. Though it often aspires to greater planes of cinematic maturity, “American Samurai” is exactly like every other low-budget martial arts flick produced during this decidedly silly era of American action filmmaking. The performances are exceptionally foul and dramatically overblown, especially from a very young, very irritating Mark Dacascos, who uses every single line as an excuse to chew scenery like a toothless hillbilly at a big city tobacco festival. If that thorny element wasn...

American World Pictures has posted info and trailers on its website for several new films the company is handling distribution for. I expect we'll be seeing more of this in the next few days with so much wheelin' & dealin' going on at the Cannes Film Festival. Of particular interest to our readers are a new Predator clone with Kevin Sorbo and some lycan horror starring Costas Mandylor and a frequently naked Christa Campbell.
First up is Flesh Wounds with TV "Hercules" Kevin Sorbo leading a squad of soldiers being stalked by a cybernetic super soldier run amok in the woods. With Predators coming out this summer, it shouldn't come as any big surprise to see Predator knock-offs making a comeback as well - at least this one thus far.
On a remote Us Army facility that officially doesn’t exist, a top-secret group of scientists conduct weapons research when they...

After making a name for himself in big action spectacles and a few rom-coms, Gerard Butler is trying out an indie drama with "Machine Gun Preacher" reports Deadline Hollywood.
Marc Forster ("Quantum of Solace," "Monster's Ball") will direct the story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who found God and became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who've been kidnapped and pressed into duty as soldiers in the Lord’s Resistance Army.
Childers established an orphanage to house 200 children, then formed a militia to protect them, recover other kidnapped kids, and dispense outlaw justice on their captors.
Forster co-wrote the script with Jason Keller. Robbie Brenner, Brad Simpson, Deborah Girratana, Gary Safady and Craig Chapman are producing. Filming apparently kicks off later this year.
