Showtime has secured the right to Surge, a documentary that will play on the premium cabler’s newly established a co-branded multiplex channel SHOxBET on September 8. Co-directed by Hannah Rosenzweig and Wendy Sachs, the film details the historic 2018 midterm elections where a record number of first-time female candidates ran and won. From executive producers Alyssa Milano, Regina K. Scully, Dara, Jedd Canty, and Tanya Selvarantnam as well as advisor Katie Couric, the film sets to expose the double standards, biases and brutal realities women face running for Congress, some without the support of their own party. The doc centers on three congressional candidates in Texas, Indiana, and Illinois, who were each looking to flip their deep red districts to blue, including Lauren Underwood, the youngest Black woman ever to be elected to Congress. A registered nurse and public health expert, Underwood is now on the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic...

The burgeoning rock doc world is always crying out for weird and wonderful tales that haven’t been told before. Could Dons of Disco be the new Searching for Sugar Man? Judge for yourself on the trailer below.
The film, which is featuring at the Slamdance Film Festival next week, is about a lip-syncing scandal which pits an American singer against an Italian male model over the legacy of 1980s ‘Italo Disco’ star Den Harrow.
Steven C. Beer at Franklin, Weinrib, Rudell & Vassalo is the sales agent.
In the 1980s, Den Harrow dominated the European pop charts with hits like “Future Brain,” “Bad Boy,” and “Don’t Break My Heart.” But thirty years later, American photographer Thomas Barbèy made a startling revelation, that he was the secret voice behind the project, and Italian Stefano Zandri has allegedly been lipsyncing for decades. The film explores who is the true artist behind Den Harrow.

Our dear friend Illuminate Founder and Executive Director Danette Wolpert has such a great idea here for this new and exciting Festival in beautiful Sedona Arizona.
1st Mind-Body-Spirit Film Fest Offers World Premieres, View & Do Experiences, Healing Village, Workshops.
The inaugural Illuminate Film Festival will blend 22 transformative films, 15 enlightening speakers and workshops, a healing village and an innovative “view and do” experience for moviegoers to more deeply process and integrate what they see on screen while surrounded by Sedona’s stunning backdrop and transformative, healing qualities, May 29-June 1.

Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley star in Old 37 (which we last reported on here) as Jon Roy and Darryl, demented siblings who operate the titular ambulance, intercepting 911 calls and picking up accident victims to inflict further pain upon them. Christian Winters is directing from a script by Paul Travers, who is also producing with Carrie Alton, Dayna Ghiraldi and Evan Greenhill, with Steven Beer executive-producing and Brian Spears and Peter Gerner providing the copious makeup FX. Shooting wraps this week on Long Island locations (including a very impressive “kill room” set); look for more coverage of Old 37 soon!

This is a first-person piece from Ted Leonsis, founder and chairman of SnagFilms (and parent company of Indiewire). He asked if he could have the floor to lay out why he believes digital distribution platforms define the future for indie films. And while as a principal of SnagFilms he clearly has a horse in this race, his perspective echoes points that others have made on our site (including this week's very popular piece written by Greenburg Traurig partner Steven Beer.) How does all of this square with your thoughts on indie distribution? Tell us in the comments. -- The Editors Sunday marked the end of the Sundance Film Festival, the traditional launching point for a new year of independent films. I didn’t go to Park City this year, as I had when my films "Nanking" and "Kicking It" were in the festival, but I read the extensive coverage from Indiewire and others with interest.

Big Picture Media has officially released a promo art for their upcoming slasher film starring Kane Hodder. The film is in pre-production for director Christian Winters.
The film is about two brothers posing as paramedics, who intercept 911 calls in a retired old ambulance. Fast paced and blood soaked, ‘Old 37′ taps into the most basic human fear: vulnerability. The words ‘don’t worry, I’m a paramedic’ will make you think twice before dialing 9-1-1.

There's not much information available for Old 37 yet, but what I've seen so far looks very intriguing. We know Kane Hodder will bring his wealth of horror experience to play one of the film's killers, and Brandi Cyrus (that's Miley's big sis) will also appear in the film.
To sum up what we currently know about the story, the film is about a couple of derelict psycho brothers who spend their time eavesdropping on emergency calls and responding in their father's retired ambulance (which I can only assume is #37) to dole out their own kind of down-home, backwoods medicine. I think we can safely surmise that bad things and the red, red kroovy follow soon after.
The official Old 37 website, which is very eerie in its own right, features some additional information and cool storyboards to give you a feel for the film. Up to the minute...

Kim Basinger and Nick Stahl are set to star alongside Freddy Rodriguez in Over The Wall. The dramatic thriller is being written and directed by Christohper Young. The story takes place in the world of professional stock car racing. Jennifer Morrison is currently in talks to join the cast as well. The film will be produced by Young and Larry Meistrich, while Steven Beer and Rodriguez serve as executive producers. Indomina Production begins this summer in Ohio.
Stahl has starred in a number of indie films since Carnivale. I am interested in learning more about the film, even though I am not a fan of stock car racing. What are your thoughts on this news?

On the night the latest edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicked off, I was approached by a man in a beat-up looking bubble coat and slacks three thousand miles away in a Crown Heights, Brooklyn laundromat. He extended his hand, in which he was holding six plastic sheets with DVDs in them, and tersely said, “Movies.” I looked down at the half-a-dozen bootleg discs in his hand, most of which were sequels to “urban” thrillers I had never heard of in the first place. “I’m good,” I brusquely whispered, causing him to saunter off into the fluorescent hum and whirl of washing machines, saddling up to the people operating them and asking each if they had three dollars with which they might procure a night’s entertainment.

When writer-director Tom Kalin brought his first feature, "Swoon," to the Independent Feature Project's 1991 Independent Feature Film Market, he recalls attending "a charming, homespun affair" with his fellow producers, Christine Vachon and James Schamus. While there, a three-minute reel of "Swoon's" best images and moments at the market captured the attention of acquisitions execs from Fine Line and PBS' "American Playhouse." As a result, Kalin headed off to Sundance the following January with the film presold and on its way to being viewed as a milestone of "new queer cinema."That was then. Today, the Big Apple's Ifp market celebrates its 30th anniversary with a new name -- Independent Film Week, running Sept. 14-19 -- and is a mix of old visions and new strategies. Through the years, however, Ifp's goal has remained consistent: to open doors and create possibilities for aspiring filmmakers with plenty of talent but little money and few connections.
