The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (2021)
My Excitement Died After a Few Episodes
I was genuinely excited about this show coming out, especially with how great Cobra Kai turned out. However, in my opinion, this show does not measure up to the first two movies. I don't know if it is supposed to though. Comparing something new to the past can sometimes be unfair.
I think the actual hockey games lack the suspense we got from the games in the movies. Maybe it's because the games weren't as meaningful in the show. Trying to prove your worth against a buffoon coach with no charisma just doesn't have the same appeal as beating Bombay's old legendary coach or an intimidating international powerhouse in the goodwill games.
The team's ascension from unskilled nobodies to a basically unbeatable cohesive unit was not very believable. Bombay coming in to help later on was nice but it never really felt like his team.
Speaking of Bombay, it was pretty disappointing how much of a low life he was first the first few episodes. That's not at all what I expected to see. Glad he eventually came around.
The Ducks coach was a total idiot. He may have built a winning program but he completely lacks character and likability. Sometimes he was funny because of how dumb he was but they should have made him more intimidating.
Some of the characters on the show were interesting though. I'd give season 2 a shot still.
6 Underground (2019)
Entertaining Action Movie
When movies are created, they typically have a goal. Is the movie going to win awards? Is it strictly a balls to the wall action film that's filled with fun?
I don't care what all the arm chair film directors on here say, the movie was fun to watch. There was lots of action, plenty of humor, and a great ending.
I didn't spit out my drink when some scene didn't flow right. I just sat back & enjoyed myself. That's why I watch movies. But anyways...
Ryan Reynolds was his usual self. Cracking some jokes but kicking ass too. I thought the cast was actually pretty good. The ending was priceless. Who wouldn't want to see a scumbag get dumped in the middle of a town he destroyed with his terrible actions? Good for those people for beating the heck out of him. Now that's what I call justice.
There was a nice blend of technology, gun fights, car chases & explosions. Like another reviewer said, it's a good Friday night film.
The Last Samurai (2003)
Pleasantly Surprised
When this movie was first released in theaters, I thought it looked interesting. Tom Cruise generally stars in pretty entertaining & quality movies, from what I have seen. I didn't see the movie until 11 years later, and I was pleasantly surprised. It is a meaningful, entertaining film. I enjoyed seeing the transition from drunken, arrogant, emotionally damaged leader, to a man at peace who found a place to call home. I don't know the true story of samurais and such, but I sympathize with the so-called "barbarians" and "savages" who were slaughtered by the big powerful governments and people because they were intimidated by them. I recommend this movie to anyone with an open mind and who likes Tom Cruise movies. I was disappointed that the main samurai whose name escapes me died though.
Homefront (2013)
Jason Statham Delivers Another Ass Kicking
Okay so I think it's been well established by other reviewers that this isn't exactly an Academy Award nominee. Most of Jason Stathams movies aren't expected to break records, they're just meant to entertain. Once again, I was not disappointed by the amount of ass kicking that took place in this movie. I love seeing Jason Statham do what he does best. Not only did he easily dispatch scum bags in one-on-one confrontations, but he took out groups of guys with ease. Don't expect very good dialog or story lines; just enjoy the action. I personally enjoyed the first fight when he beats up the guy everyone knows as the town wussy. James Franco was actually pretty good as the nasty, horrible villain. I was looking forward to Jason Statham actually dealing with the leader of that biker gang.
Commando (1985)
Arnold At His Finest
This movie is absolutely Arnold at his finest. Let's set aside the critically acclaimed Terminator 2 for a moment. This movie has it all, including hilarious one-liners, cheesy and unrealistic action, and Arnold's charisma at its best. Not only did Arnold take out an entire militia on his own, but he also got hit by a car, had no whip lash from a car accident, and he used a banner to flawlessly swing all the way from the top floor of a 2-3 story shopping mall to the bottom like Tarzan. He flips over a phone booth with someone in it, pulls a kayak onto a beach in a speedo, and somehow gets a wild deer to eat out of his hand with his daughter next to him. I'm telling you, this movie is classic. It's so cheesy but funny and entertaining. I'm surprised at how low the IMDb rating is on a scale of 1 to 10. I mean, let's be honest, it wasn't getting an Oscar nomination. The target audience is men who want to be entertained. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes Arnold and 80s action movies.
I'm ashamed to say I didn't see this movie until 2002-2003 but I've been a lifelong Arnold fan. I'm 30 years old, so I was a late starter.
Gran Torino (2008)
Memorable Performances & Interesting Story
I first watched Gran Turino just a few weeks ago. I didn't know what to expect but from the previews back in 2008, it looked interesting. I never thought it would be as funny as it was. I guess it's not supposed to be but I was laughing at least every couple minutes. Clint Eastwood's character was a crotchety, racist old war veteran who lived next to an Asian family. Throughout the duration of the movie, Mr. Eastwood must have unleashed ten different racial slurs a total of 30 times. He was just nasty in general towards a couple different races of people. It was comical to watch, not because I have a problem with other races, but because he was so grumpy and it's just a movie.
As far as the plot goes, it was actually a good movie. It was nice to see him become friends with the Asian boy and his family, and how he saved the girl from the young men who were harassing her. I would recommend this movie.
Raw Deal (1986)
One of Arnold's Forgettable Movies
I've seen pretty much all of Arnold's movies, and this is one of the more forgettable ones. It's definitely not Commando; not even close. For one thing, this movie, to me, lacks the humor of Arnold's typical movies. His funny one-liners and accidentally funny scenes are what makes many of Arnold's movies enjoyable. The plot is okay I guess, but not very good. It's alright though; every actor has some fillers on their resume just like bands have fillers on their albums. Overall, I don't think it's worth watching if you've never seen it before. I have only seen it one time and I don't need to see it again. I do give Arnold props though; he's very charismatic in the movie, and he does kick a lot of butt. He was still in his physical prime when the movie was made, so he looked fantastic. It was a joy to see his personality and the way he interacted with the other characters. His cockiness was funny.
Salt (2010)
Not Bad At All
I didn't really know what to expect from this movie but it sounded interesting, so I gave it a shot. The movie features good action, plot twists throughout and it keeps you guessing. A lot of people are talking about how unrealistic it is but that's what movies are for. I like watching people kicking butt & being heroes and that's what we get. Angelina held her on fighting & shooting people. I don't care for the ending but it left open the possibility for a sequel. The concept of kids being trained to integrate into society & eventually attack America is scary! It seems wild but realistic considering the whacko America haters out there preying on people
World War Z (2013)
Better Than I Expected
I'm not really into zombie movies and TV shows, but I actually enjoyed this one. Brad Pitt was his usual gutsy self, being the tough guy making the tough decisions. The movie wasn't real cheesy considering the zombie theme. It had good action, suspense, and kept you on the edge of your seat. It actually half seems like it could happen in real life, but not quite on the large scale it did in this movie, or as fast. What ever happened to the parents of the Mexican boy? They never really addressed that. Is it just me or were the zombies exceptionally fast and strong? They were running like twice as fast as everyone else. That makes it even more terrifying!
X: First Class (2011)
Interesting & Educational
I was never really into comic books growing up, so there is a lot I don't know about the "origins" of a lot of the characters in the super hero movies. That is, until the recent flood of Marvel & DC Comics movies and shows that have been coming out. X-Men: First Class taught me how Professor X, Magneto, Raven, etc. came to be who they are. It was interesting to see where Magneto got his helmet. I think Kevin Bacon did a good job with his character. I didn't even know he was in the movie. It was cool seeing all the different characters' abilities/powers. I didn't know what to expect from the movie but I thought it was actually pretty cool. It was worth watching. If anyone hasn't seen any of the X-Men movies, watch this one first.
Green Lantern (2011)
Not As Bad As Expected
I have put off seeing this movie for quite a while, thinking it was terrible, and because I knew nothing about Green Lantern. I read about them on Wikipedia and I guess that made me want to see it more. Overall, the movie wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. As with most movies that feature aliens, it had its cheesy parts. However, it wasn't overdone in my opinion. Ryan Reynolds was fine in the role. It was funny to see all the things he created with the ring, like a chainsaw, those big guns toward the end, and turning a helicopter into a race car. I would look forward to a sequel, as there is plenty of action I want to see out of these characters. The costume was pretty cool on Green Lantern.
Robin Hood (2010)
Acceptable New Version
When I first saw the previews for this movie when it came out, I was excited. Russell Crowe generally does not disappoint. He seems to play the same rugged, war general, tough guy roles except for when he played in A Beautiful Mind. The movie as a whole wasn't bad at all. It wasn't as great as I thought it would be, but it gives you the impression like there's more to come. Will we get a sequel? I don't know, but that seems to be their goal based on the way the movie ended. I would have liked to see Robin Hood fight more, but I understand it was more of an origins type of movie. Interesting take on the Robin Hood character. I think Russell Crowe playing in this role was a good idea. The Sheriff of Nottingham was a clown, in my opinion. He's traditionally a tough, jerk of a man but he seemed weak and passive in this movie. I loved the old man, Robin's new dad. He was good. Sad to see him die but I'm glad he made Godfrey bleed.
Battleship (2012)
Not As Bad As Expected
Let me start off by saying I'm not a huge Sci-Fi fan and I've hardly played the game Battleship in my life. Having said that, I am a big fan of movies. Going in, I expected Battleship to be cheesy and disappointing, but the action sequences in the previews had caught my interest. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. It featured good action/battle scenes, a feel-good ending, and perseverance from the human race. Yeah it was fake, some of the acting was corny, and there were aliens in the film, but it's a movie. If you have time to kill, check it out. If not, don't bother. I will say though that it was awesome when the old veterans joined forces with the Navy to operate the retired battleship.
