The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
Don't be fooled by the trailer
The trailer would lead you to believe this is an action movie surrounding a guy on a motorbike who robs banks.
While the first half of the movie does surround the bank robber, the actual action is few and far between. Just when it really gets going it's over.
The remainder of the film is an action free drama with predictable plot 'twists'.
Either make an action movie or make a drama. Don't try to mix the two.
The plot twist near the end had been glaringly obvious for the previous thirty minutes and you are just waiting for it to happen.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Absolute Pants
I wasn't expecting much but what I saw was less.
Impressive special effects, weak script, terrible acting... what a sad way for this franchise to end.
Let's be honest though, Star Wars the original, episode IV was THE movie, the rest were attempts to milk the cash cow. Forget the Star Wars universe, cash is king here.
Save your money and wait for the DVD if you must see this, or wait until it's on cable in a couple of years.
Given that I saw this movie at 4:30 in the afternoon and had to pay $9 for the ticket then I guess it's no surprise it made so much change in the opening weekend.
My Hero (2000)
Great harmless fun
This show is just a bit of fun. The whole premise of a superhero with an Irish accent who isn't too bright and is called Thermoman shows that the writers aren't trying to make the show anything more than that.
Sit back and relax for thirty minutes without having to think too hard.
24 (2001)
Kim must die
Great escapism, Keifer Sutherland is excellent, but please - kill off Kim. Season One she was dumb, Season Two she got worse and now, JEEZ people! She's working at CTU???????
Last time we saw Kim she was a nanny, now she's an analyst for one what is presented as the USA's first line of defense against the axis of evil? Nooooo..
I'm pretty sure they don't have Daddy and Daughter day at the FBI.
Saving Jessica Lynch (2003)
Sleeping Jessica Lynch
Hard to see what Jessica Lynch did to become a hero from this movie. She spent most of the film in a hospital bed.
The battle scene in which she was captured showed her knocked out in an accident while her fellow soldiers battled against overwhelming Iraqi forces. It would be nice to see a movie about those folks and not about a woman who was asleep the whole time.
Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003)
Fantastic
Switch off your reality chip and sit back for a movie full of great stunts and special effects that aren't believable but make for GREAT viewing.
Cameron Diaz is in full hottie mode, Barrymore, well not sure what happened there.
GREAT movie, non-stop action.
Nip/Tuck (2003)
FANTASTIC!
Love the show, nice to have something on that's not afraid to offend the sensibilities of the American audience and doesn't have to run on HBO.....
Julian McMahon is excellent - nice to see him able to get more screen time than he was allowed in his previous venture.
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
Heavy on action, light on character
I wasn't expecting this movie to change my life, I was just looking for a couple of hours in the Trek universe with the familiar TNG faces from my youth.
Nemesis delivers excellent action scenes (the dune buggy scenes serve no purpose other than eye candy) but the characters seemed flat.
The trailer for the movie is misleading and lead me to believe there would be more to this movie than it delivered. The claim that it appeals to more than just Star Trek fans is also a bit misleading.
Series 7: The Contenders (2001)
Excellent concept, poorly executed
Ok, the choices at Blockbuster were limited the night I rented this. On the one hand Spy Kids, on the other Series 7.
Series 7 had an excellent cover. The concept of a reality TV show were the boundaries had been pushed back to the point were the audience demanded death to keep watching.
Unfortunately Series 7 had little more than the concept to work with. The movie dragged on for what seemed like an eternity, whether this was an intentional ploy by the makers to encourage audience participation in wanting to see the 'contenders' killed I do not know.
Filmed in the style of Blair Witch meets The Running Man (the actors trying to act like they're not acting and killing each other) and using what looked like hi-8 as a medium, this movie did have a promising start.
In between the scenes of tension or action were several bio's of each of the contenders. While this was novel, each bio dragged on too long and did not make me empathise with the contenders or make them seem any more real and less like actors.
A shame.
The Mexican (2001)
Way off
From the trailer and the review this looked like a True Romance, the reality was a true disappointment.
The comedy was limp, the timing way off, the incessant jokes about Mexico wore very thin after twenty minutes. Julie Roberts character seemed like she would be more at home on the set of Friends, no doubt to make Brad Pitt feel more at home. However, Roberts just couldn't pull it off, lacking the tweeness of her small screen colleagues.
A disappointment, overly long and well worth missing.
