Actor Alex Wolff – whose credits include The Naked Brothers Band, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, Patriots Day, My Friend Dahmer, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level, Hereditary, Pig, Old, and Oppenheimer – made his feature writing and directing debut with the 2019 drama The Cat and the Moon. Now he’s set to follow that up with the “dark and sexy” psychological thriller If She Burns, and The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the film is going to star Victoria Pedretti (You), Asa Butterfield (Sex Education), and Justice Smith (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves). Wolff has also reserved a role in the film for himself.
If She Burns will follow a fiery young woman (Pedretti) who travels to Europe with her dysfunctional family after a traumatic incident. There she finds refuge and danger in a turbulent affair with her enigmatic neighbor (Wolff), which, along with increasing family tensions and mysterious wildfires,...

Though you probably only know Alex Wolff from his performances in films such as “Oppenheimer,” “Pig,” and “Hereditary,” the actor also dabbles in a bit of filmmaking. He already has one feature under his belt, the 2019 drama “The Cat and the Moon,” and now, it appears he’s ready to sit in the director’s chair once more for the upcoming film, “If She Burns.”

Music has always played an important role in Tolkien adaptations. J.A. Bayona, producer and director on Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, told Den of Geek last year that he played music on set for the actors to help them get “the right tone” for their characters, and that “there’s an… obvious sense of musicality when you read the books” which is “all about language and the beauty of language.” The show’s season one finale even featured a new musical setting for Tolkien’s “Rhyme of the Rings,” written by Bear McCreary and performed by Fiona Apple, which was generally well-received by fans.
Anyone who has read The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings knows that the books are full of songs. Aragorn sings old Elvish ballads, Bilbo is quite the composer, the Dwarves have songs about their ancient mines, the Rohirrim love melancholic battle epics,...

Exclusive: Alex Wolff has signed on to star opposite the previously announced Kiersey Clemons in Sophie Kargman’s thriller, Susie Searches.
Kargman’s feature directorial debut is based on her 2020 short of the same name, in which she starred alongside Delon de Metz, Sam Lerner, Gabriel Notarangelo and Alison Rich. The darkly comic thriller follows Susie (Clemons), an awkward college student who seizes the opportunity to bolster her popularity—and her overlooked true-crime podcast—by solving the disappearance of a classmate. But as her investigation proceeds, we realize that the truth and Susie aren’t at all what they seem.
Wolff will play Jesse, the charismatic college kid whose disappearance sparks Susie’s investigation. While Jesse has become a campus celebrity thanks to his positivity-themed social media platform, it turns out his private life is much more complicated than his online persona suggests.
Kargman wrote the script with William Day Frank.

Alex Wolff has never been unacquainted with fame. After starring in Nickelodeon’s “The Naked Brothers Band” movie and series when he was a kid alongside his older brother Nat, he quickly rose to stardom as a young actor and musician.
More than 15 years later, Wolff has appeared in a wide array of feature films, from Ad Aster’s unsettling horror film “Hereditary” to the hit “Jumanji” sequels. He now stars alongside Nicolas Cage in “Pig” as a young man named Amir who runs a truffle resale business in Portland. While preparing for the movie, Wolff came to realize how much he had in common with the character he was playing.
“For this role, I rediscovered this part of myself that maybe I was embarrassed about,” Wolff told Variety.
Amir buys truffles from Rob (Cage), a melancholic truffle hunter who lives alone in a cabin in the Oregon wilderness with his beloved pig.

From his supernatural horror hit, Hereditary, to his expanding role in the Jumanji franchise, Wolff has even written and directed his own film, The Cat and the Moon. Wolff’s latest role as Henry in Castle in the Ground checks another box that is consistent with most acclaimed actors as his grieving, opioid-addicted character required dramatic weight loss. Working on “Human Capital” was a reunion for Alex Wolff and Maya Hawke.
The two play love interests in the indie thriller about a horrific accident that causes two families to fracture as secrets are uncovered and threatened to be exposed.
It turns out that Wolff and Hawke went to pre-school together in New York City. They even dressed as Power Rangers together for Halloween, Wolff, 22, tells me on this week’s episode of “The Big Ticket,” Variety and iHeart’s weekly podcast. “I feel like Maya’s going to deny that she dressed as a Power Ranger for Halloween, and I just want to go on record, she’s lying,” Wolff cracked.
In the movie, Wolff plays a loner with anger issues. He’s very similar to the high schooler he plays in “The Cat and the Moon,” which also marked his feature film writing and directing debut.

In show business, some child actors don’t make the jump, with the industry stalling their careers by adulthood.
But not Alex Wolff.

Does an actor who writes a part for himself, then directs himself in that part, become a trio of collaborators or an unruly split personality? Not that either scenario can’t make for an interesting film, but outside of a handful of rock-star examples, usually starting with that “Citizen Kane” dude, it’s the kind of ambition that rarely reveals mastery of all three disciplines.
Twenty-one-year-old Alex Wolff, an ex-Nickelodeon star who lay to rest plenty of child-actor baggage last year with his searing turn as Toni Collette’s teenage son in “Hereditary,” hasn’t always been just a performer, having written music for the kid series he headlined with brother Nat (“The Naked Brothers Band”) and even a play that his actor-director mother Polly Draper staged at a small theater in New York. “The Cat and the Moon” is the sort of first-feature project likely to make your average aspiring young filmmaker roll their eyes in exasperation. A showbiz professional since age 6, child of an actor and a jazz pianist, approaching big-screen stardom in recent hits “Hereditary” and “Jumanji,” actor/writer/musician Alex Wolff naturally steps into the director’s chair at age 21 with resources few wannabes will ever access. What’s more, “The Cat and the Moon” shows all external signs of being a little too indulgently “write what you know,” as it involves a teen (played by guess-who) dealing with jazz-musician father figures in the multihyphenate’s native New York City.
It’s impossible to keep harrumphing once “Cat” actually starts, however: Wolff has made a debut feature as impressive in its deliberate modesty and unpretentiousness as it is in matters of psychological nuance and technical skill. Lacking the kind of...
