Why buy it? Mike Mills’ (Beginners) latest is a beautiful ode to not just motherhood but family and friendships in general. Annette Bening delivers what should have been recognized as the best of last year too as she finds wit and warmth in a character trying to do right by her son. Billy Crudup is equally fantastic, and they’re joined by Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning who also deliver compelling characters. Canadian and American arthouse film fans rejoice! The UK's Arrow Films is expanding their Academy high-brow imprint to North America next March with an impressive slate of films that are sure to please. Among the first releases are Walerian Borowczyk's Story of Sin, Elio Petri's Property Is No Longer A Theft, Jasper Sharp's festival hit The Creeping Garden, Luchino Visconti's Ludwig, and Giuseppe Tornatore's Academy Award-winning paean to the glory of the moving image, Cinema Paradiso. Each of these films is a must-own, and of the lot, four are new releases for Arrow, with only Cinema Paradiso having seen a release in the UK. Exclusive: Upcoming theatrical slate includes supernatural thriller Anguish, political drama The Idealist and comedy Men And Chicken starring Mads Mikkelsen.
UK distributor Arrow Films has forged a new partnership with Munro Films to handle sales for its slate of upcoming theatrical releases.
Munro will look at further opportunities in promoting Arrow Films’ catalogue titles for bookings, including outdoor event screenings, with library titles such as Withnail & I, Bicycle Thieves, Cinema Paradiso and The Long Good Friday. Munro will also explore 35mm screenings on cult titles such as the recent Dario Argento horror re-release Deep Red
Arrow recently acquired theatrical rights to a slate of new titles including possession-thriller Anguish, Danish political thriller The Idealist and dark comedy Men and Chicken, starring Mads Mikkelsen and Søren Malling.
The distributor has also acquired the upcoming Cabin Fever remake and documentary The Creeping Garden. All titles are set to receive theatrical releases this year.

Horror film fans tend to be more interested in the how and why of their films, and now fans in London can take advantage of even more knowledge coming their way. The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, founded first in Montreal by writer and festival programmer Kier-La Janisse, is opening a branch in the UK capital. Writers, filmmakers and scholars of horror film such as Kim Newman (critic with Sight & Sound) and Jasper Sharp (co-director of The Creeping Garden), will be conducting a series of low-cost lectures and classes for the discerning genre film fan.Janisse herself will be conducting the first lecture on Wednesday January 8th, "School of Shock: Pain and Pleasure in the Classroom Safety Film". From screenings of retro favorites to anticipated new releases, from live radio horror play performance to a Gremlins 30th anniversary Q&A, the 2nd SpectreFest is looking to celebrate the Halloween season in Hollywood on an even bigger scale than it did last year. Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller’s SpectreVision will host its second annual SpectreFest, expanding the neophyte L.A. horror festival’s run from two weeks in 2013 to two months starting this September. The first annual SpectreFest was inaugurated last year as an offshoot of the then-newly launched film and music label. This year, partnered again with L.A.’s specialty theater Cinefamily, SpectreFest will screen anticipated genre titles including opening film The Guest, closing pic The Babadook, Open Windows, Tusk, and Housebound along with special events anchored by horror icons Cliver Barker presenting his Nightbreed director’s cut, Larry Fessenden, Glenn McQuaid, and Joe Dante presenting the 30th anniversary of Gremlins. We are three weeks away until Fantastic Fest. Kind of amazing to think about. This year, I am blessed to bring Mike Hassler with me. We will be seeing as many films as our eyeballs will see and writing as many reviews as our fingers will allow us. Take a look at the second wave announcement below and don’t forget to look at the first wave and my predictions of what might play at the fest (I didn’t fare well with the Second Wave). Organisers at the tenth anniversary edition have unveiled the second wave of programming at the event, set to run in Austin, Texas, from September 18-25.
The Us premiere of Nightcrawler (pictured) starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a freelance Los Angeles crime journalist will close the event.
Also set to screen is the Keanu Reeves thriller John Wick, which Lionsgate recently picked up for Us distribution.

The lineup for the second wave of films at 2014′s 10th Annual Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas has arrived, and with it a potential Oscar contender, Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler. The film, a pulpy crime film about an embedded journalist (Jake Gyllenhaal), will make its U.S. premiere at the festival with Director and Writer Gilroy in attendance.
Fantastic Fest has also released a lineup that includes John Wick, an action/thriller starring Keanu Reeves (Reeves will be in attendance), Takashi Miike’s latest Over Your Dead Body and the Studio Ghibli film The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Open Road’s Jake Gyllenhaal starrer Nightcrawler will close the 10th annual Fantastic Fest in its U.S. premiere and Keanu Reeves will drop by for a gala screening of Lionsgate’s John Wick, organizers announced today. The rising genre film fest held September 18-25 in Austin, TX will open with the previously announced Tusk from Kevin Smith.
Also unveiled today along with a second wave of programming is a centerpiece bout in the Fantastic Debates, in which filmmakers, critics, and celebs engage in discourse at a podium before taking it to the boxing ring to determine the ultimate winner. This year, BitTorrent’s Chief Content Officer Matt Mason will take on a challenger to duke it out over whether the file sharing platform is a valuable tool or an enabler of piracy.
