It’s been a long eight years between projects – but it might be worth the “wait” for this ambitious and stacked sophomore feature. Piero Messina premiered L’attesa in 2015 at the Venice and Toronto Intl. Film Festivals, and his second film Another End has Gael Garcia Bernal, Renate Reinsve, Bérénice Bejo and Tim Daish to boot. Messina has mostly directed for television in-between. Production would have taken place in Italy at the beginning of the year. The Berlinale might attempt to lasso the film as well.

Paris-based sales agent Luxbox has acquired world sales rights to “Dos Estaciones” which will world premiere in World Cinema Dramatic Competition at this month’s Sundance Festival.
Produced by Mexico’s Sin Sitio Cine in co-production with France’s In Vivo Films and the U.S., “Dos Estaciones” marks the feature debut of Juan Pablo González, co-director of the Film Directing program at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) whose shorts have won at Slamdance and New Orleans.
Co-written with Ana Isabel Fernández and Ilana Coleman (“The Inventory”), “Dos Estaciones” pays tribute to Mexico’s artisanal tequila makers, a dying breed as they are bought up by foreign corporations.
In striking parallel and contrast, the feature underscores the meticulous craftsmanship and artistic ambition of art films emerging from Mexico and the rest of Latin America which question received wisdom and cliches, offering an alternative narrative.

Seasoned Finnish writer-director-producer Aku Louhimies is plotting multi-season TV drama “Conflict,” a near-future political action thriller that turns on a Finland threatened by an unknown military force.
Comparing the project to high-profile Norwegian TV show “Occupied,” the director said he had the idea for “Conflict” after his war epic “Unknown Soldier,” Finland’s record-breaking movie with over 1 million ticket sales. “I started thinking what if Finland was suddenly threatened by foreign forces. How would we react and how would that affect geopolitics in the Nordic region?” reflected Louhimies, who contemplates building the project as a major international TV drama.
The project is co-penned by actor Andrei Alén, novelist and officer in reserve Helena Immonen, and long-time writing partner Jari Olavi Rantala.
Set on Midsummer’s Eve, the story follows an unknown military unit, as it invades a peaceful sea-side town in Finland. All residents are taken hostage, and civilians, used...

Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas selection of documentary shorts was quite interesting in 2018, dealing with a number of significant issues all over Asia. Here are three great samples.
Waves of Transition (2017) by Jonas Scheu
In Ma Yan Chan, a district of Mandalay (Myanmar), the dockers always lived and worked in the whitish mist from the dusty banks of the river Irrawaddy. From morning to evening, the embankments for loading, the near-by shops, and the strangely shaped huts used as restaurants for workers are constantly busy and crowded. Jonas Scheu highlights this chaotic setting with artistry, particularly through cinematographer’s Catherine Georges long shots that seem to have captured the atmosphere of the area to perfection.
At the same time, he does not fail to stress the sociopolitical issues of the area and its inhabitants, whom the government considers illegal and wants to move them to some cramped apartments...

On the heels of yesterday's Toronto Film Festival announcement, this morning we get the lineup for the 2015 Venice Film Festival and, as always, there's a little crossover with some films set to premiere on the Lido ahead of their Toronto (and/or Telluride premieres). Some of the titles not screening at Toronto (at least not yet) that will premiere at Venice include Baltasar Kormakur's Everest, which is serving as the opening night film, Drake Doremus' Equals starring Kristen Stewart, A Bigger Splash from Luca Guadagnino, Go With Me directed by Daniel Alfredson, Dito Montiel's Man Down, Amy Berg's Janis as well as a new, 16-minute short film from Martin Scorsese titled The Audition and a Brian De Palma documentary directed by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow. There's also buzz building for The Childhood of a Leader directed by Brady Corbet and starring Robert Pattinson and Berenice Bejo.
