Grasshopper Film has picked up North American distribution rights to Paul Felten and Joe DeNardo’s “Slow Machine,” ahead of the film’s premiere at the 58th annual New York Film Festival this week.
Set to release theatrically next year, the film is billed as a “miniature epic” of paranoia, espionage, subterfuge, music and performance on 16mm. It first bowed at January’s International Film Festival Rotterdam, one of the few physical film fests to take place ahead of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Slow Machine” follows Stephanie, a restless and vibrant actor, who meets a troubled counter-terrorism specialist who’s also an aficionado of experimental theater. Their relationship ends disastrously, and forces Stephanie to the ramshackle home of musician Eleanor Friedberger, where she’s haunted by violent memories of her past life.

“La La Land” (Lionsgate) more than met its high-end expectations. It scored $855,000 in five theaters with an astounding per theater average of $171,000: beat only by “Grand Budapest Hotel,” opening against far less competition early in the year.
The critically hailed Hollywood musical already won Best Film from the New York Film Critics, and is primed to shine during the ongoing awards season. But part of any major Oscar contender’s profile is its popular reception. And it scored a huge initial audience response this weekend in New York and Los Angeles. Likely to factor in both Sunday’s Critics’ Choice Awards and Monday’s Golden Globes nominations Monday, “La La Land”‘s Oscar momentum just got stronger.
This early December weekend is a dead zone except for just this type of top-of-the-line awards entry. “The Big Short” opened this weekend in 2015 in eight multi-city initial dates and grossed $705,000. “La...

Burn Country opens with a scene so deliberately disorienting that people who see it at a multiplex may briefly wonder whether they’ve accidentally wandered into the wrong theater. This is an American movie featuring an Afghan protagonist, but the first thing we see is a woman onstage, yelling in unsubtitled Polish for several minutes. No context whatsoever has been established, and there’s no way for anyone who doesn’t speak the language to know what she’s saying, though it’s obvious that she’s angry and repeating certain phrases over and over. Only in hindsight does it become clear that our befuddlement at this theater piece is meant to provide a window into the turbulent mindset of Osman (Dominic Rains), who’s just arrived in Northern California from Afghanistan and who experiences, over the course of Burn Country, a crash course on the ways in which parts...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

What begins as an innocent venture into the town’s subculture turns into something much, much darker. Formerly titled The Fixer, documentarian Ian Olds is the filmmaker behind the lens.

"You got a scoop?" Samuel Goldwyn has debuted a trailer for an indie drama titled Burn Country, which premiered at Tribeca earlier this year. The film is a fictional feature version of a real-life story of a "fixer" journalist from Afghanistan who decides to move to a town on the coast in Northern California. However, once he begins working at a newspaper there he gets drawn into the strange "backwoods of this small town", stumbling into local corruption and other dangers. Iranian actor Dominic Rains stars as Osman, and the cast includes Melissa Leo, James Franco, Rachel Brosnahan, Thomas Jay Ryan, Tim Kniffin, and James Oliver Wheatley. This looks damn good, like it offers a unique perspective not often seen on film. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Ian Olds' Burn Country, originally from EW.com: After being exiled from Afghanistan, a former war journalist (Dominic Rains) who...

The Toronto International Film Festival is mere weeks from kicking off, yet the annual fall fest is showing zero sign of slowing down when it comes to announcing the titles that will round out this year’s event. Today’s announcement brings with it a number of Cannes favorites, including Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or-winning “I, Daniel Blake,” Olivier Assayas’ divisive Kristen Stewart-starring “Personal Shopper” and Pedro Almodovar’s “Julieta.”

Confession: I normally remember actresses names with their faces straightaway even if they've only had a bit role that impressed me. Sometimes actors take a few roles to reel me in as if I'm face blind. And so it was at Tribeca where Dominic Rains took the Best Actor prize for his strong sympathetic work as Osman, an Afghani journalist transplanted to rural California in Ian Old's The Fixer (2016). All throughout the picture I was like "who is this guy?" like I'd never seen him before only to discover thereafter that I'd already seen him And loved him in two other movies. In my defense the Iranian-American actor, born in Tehran and raised in Texas, looks different in each of his key roles. But still! I'd never let this talent slip by me with an actress no matter what they did with their hair and costumes.

Actors and their stories fared well at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Demetri Martin’s “Dean” took home the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature, receiving $20,000. The stand-up comedian wrote, directed, and starred in the comedy about one man’s uncertain future following a recent break-up and the sale of his childhood home. Mackenzie Davis (“Always Shine”) received the Actress prize in a U.S. Narrative Feature for her turn in a thriller about two female actors in different places in their careers and the jealous rage that it sparks. Director Sophia Takal was one female director of the 40 percent that made up this year’s directorial slate. Meanwhile, Michael Ragen (“Kicks”) won a prize for cinematography, and “F to 7th” Web series creator Ingrid Jungermann’s “Women Who Kill” earned kudos for her screenplay about two women who create a female serial killer podcast and become paranoid after...

One of the final films that I got to see last week at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival was also ironically the best of the bunch. That film was Dean, the cinematic writing and directorial debut of actor/comedian Demetri Martin. Not only was it absolutely fantastic, it was also declared an award winner at the festival, taking home the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature. That’s a big feather in this one’s cap as it begins to plan for a release in theaters, presumably later on this year. I know I can’t wait for you to see it, though I’ll have more on it later. For the moment, this will also be a piece highlighting all of the award winners, so let’s do that now! Quickly though, a bit on the film itself. As mentioned, Martin writes, directs, and stars in this dramedy about grief.

The slow-burning indie thriller The Fixer opens on a woman speaking intense Polish, while a naked man strapped to a wheel rolls slowly away behind her. As the camera rises, we realize that this is a play being performed for a tiny audience in a small-town theatre – most of them obviously perplexed by what’s happening in front of them. Then the camera hones in on the face of Osman (Dominic Rains), his face gradually splitting into an ecstatic, fascinated grin. Such is the tone of The Fixer, a movie that uses a thriller’s mechanisms to examine American culture and society through the eyes of an outsider.
Osman is an Afghani journalist who used to work as a “fixer” for Western journalists, guiding them through the complex society of Afghanistan in pursuit of their stories. Now he’s immigrated to a small Californian town with the help of his friend Gabe,...

Jason from Mnpp here, reporting for "Beauty vs Beast" duty from the middle of the Tribeca Film Festival -- I mean that literally; I am in between screenings right this very minute. (Sidenote: and since I'm not on my usual computer and don't have access to Photoshop, this week's edition is more lo-fi than usual, but we'll make due.) Anyway you know who else is here with me at the festival? James Franco. James Franco is everywhere, in every movie.
Okay okay maybe he's just in two movies - The Fixer and King Cobra - but on top of those I just finished watching 11.22.63 the other day plus it's his birthday on Tuesday, so he certainly feels omnipresent in my life at the moment. So for this week's competition let's look back at one of his finest moments -- David Gordon Green's 4-20-Perfect-10 Pineapple Express, opposite the Bacall to his Don't-Bogart-That-j Mr.

While the Spotlight, Midnight, and Special Sections programs won’t drop until March 8, the Us Narrative, International Narrative, and World Documentary Competitions, and Viewpoints showcase hit the internet today and there’s plenty to buzz about. Eight filmmaking teams receive the grants to push their projects into the next stage of their creative process, from screenwriting to production.
