Jerry Seinfeld wanted Chris Rock to parody Will Smith slapping him at the 2022 Oscars for his Netflix movie Unfrosted.
While appearing on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s podcast Fly on the Wall this week, Seinfeld said he initially wanted to cast Rock in the role as the host of the Bowl & Spoon Awards, which eventually went to Cedric the Entertainer.
“We shot that right after the Will Smith slap,” Seinfeld said. “I was going to have somebody come up on the stage and have Chris punch ’em out as they got there.”
However, Rock “wasn’t up to perform” the parody of the incident. “He was a little shook from that event,” Seinfeld explained. “That was what that scene was going to be, but Cedric saved the day.”

Netflix’s Roast of Tom Brady got loads of press coverage (including several stories on this very website), but a different live special from the streamer’s Netflix Is a Joke festival racked up more views over the weekend.
Katt Williams: Woke Foke, which streamed live on Saturday, May 4, earned 4 million views (determined by total viewing time divided by running time) worldwide, according to Netflix’s internal measurement for April 29-May 5. That’s double the 2 million for the Brady roast, albeit with an extra day for users to watch as the roast streamed Sunday evening. The roast had more total viewing time at 6.2 million hours, to 4.1 million hours for Williams’ special — but it was also almost three times as long as Woke Foke.
That both specials made the global top 10, however, is testament to Netflix’s growing capacity to host live events. The streamer’s first live stand-up special,...

John Mulaney is back, and going live.
Netflix announced Monday that the comic will be rolling out his latest twist on the traditional comedy special with a multi-night streaming event, which he’s titled John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A.
The six episodes will unspool live on Netflix over as many nights during the service’s Netflix Is a Joke Fest, when, yes, everybody — or at least every major comic — is in town. The special formally launches May 3, with additional episodes debuting nightly, beginning 7 p.m. Pt, from May 6-10. Mulaney will also be performing at the Hollywood Bowl on May 4 as part of the star-studded festival.
Each of the live installments will feature Mulaney exploring the city, and will incorporate many of the famous (and not-so-famous) faces in town. As Netflix describes it, the “comically unconventional show will feature special guests and field pieces shot in Los Angeles.

Pro tip for Screen Actors Guild Awards viewers: Watch it live. That’s because even those Netflix subscribers on the cheaper advertising tier will still get a commercial-free experience when the telecast runs live on Saturday at 5 p.m. Pt/8 p.m. Et. After that initial livestream, however, commercial breaks will be inserted into replays for users on the ad tier looking to timeshift and watch the SAG Awards later.
It’s a landmark year for the SAG Awards, for a number of reasons. First off, it’s the 30th anniversary of the event, which returns to the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall — where the kudocast has spent most of its three-decade existence — after two years away.
Also, it’s the first SAG Awards following last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike and eventual new agreement with the AMPTP. And there’s a new production team behind this year’s SAG Awards: Baz Halpin,...

The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).

Updated: “Monday Night Raw” is headed to Netflix.
In a major shakeup, WWE has struck a deal with Netflix that will see its flagship weekly live pro wrestling show begin airing exclusively on the streaming giant beginning in January 2025. That will mark the first time in its three-decade history that “Raw” has not aired new episodes on a linear television network.
The deal is valued at $500 million per year for 10 years. Netflix has the option to opt out after the initial five years and to extend for an additional 10 years. By comparison, sources also say WWE’s current five-year deal for “Raw” with NBCUniversal is worth approximately $250 million-$260 million per year.
“We are excited to have WWE Raw, with its huge and passionate multigenerational fan base, on Netflix,” said Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria. “By combining our reach, recommendations and fandom with WWE, we’ll be able to deliver...

Elton John is the latest member of the Egot club, scoring his first Emmy for best variety special (live).
The 2023 Emmy Awards win for the musician’s Farewell From Dodger Stadium special, which he secured during Monday night’s telecast, joins his Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.
The Disney+ special chronicles the musician’s final North American show as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. The tour began in 2018 and was set to end in 2021 but was postponed, like many tours, by the Covid-19 pandemic.
John was recovering from a knee operation and couldn’t attend the show, so producer Ben Winston accepted the award on his behalf. “He’s absolutely fine, but he wanted to send his love and thanks to the Television Academy for this incredible award,” Winston said. “We did know this was going to be historic because it was going to win a man...

Powerhouse “Saturday Night Live” alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reunited for a revival of their “Weekend Update” co-anchor gig at Monday’s Emmy Awards on Fox and got a round of thunderous applause in the room before their bit began.
Because they were presenting the Emmy award for live variety special, they took the liberty of throwing out zingers about the noms in the “Update”-zinger style.

Sir Elton John just won his first Emmy Award on Monday night’s ceremony, making him the 19th person ever to achieve an Egot. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member has also won two Oscars for Best Original Song (“Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from “The Lion King” in 1994; and I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from “Rocketman” in 2019). Heading into Sunday’s Golden Globe ceremony, Ricky Gervais was not confident he would win the first-ever award for Best TV Stand-Up Comedy Performance. “I’m nominated for another Golden Globe tonight,” he wrote early Sunday about his “Armageddon” Netflix special. “Won’t win, but it’s nice to still be up there in the mix, flying the flag.” Well, he did end up winning, but he wasn’t in attendance to accept his prize.
Hours after the ceremony wrapped up, Gervais posted a three-word acceptance speech on social media as only he could: “I f***ing won!” The comedian accompanied the remark with a photo of him holding a Golden Globe from when he hosted the ceremony years earlier — see below.

Gervais later followed that up with some more, shall we say, heartfelt words of wisdom.

Heading into the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7, “Succession” was the show to beat as it scored a record nine nominations — more than any other television show in history. Some of the other top nominees on the TV side were “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” with five noms apiece, and “The Crown” with four bids. But which shows ended up being the big winners during the three-hour ceremony?
Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress was the first TV category handed out this year, and it went to Ali Wong (“Beef”), who is also predicted to prevail at next week’s Emmys. She beat out Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Elizabeth Olson (“Love and Death”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”) and Rachel Weisz (“Dead Ringers”).

No, you’re not going crazy: the Golden Globes will be presenting a brand new award for Best TV Stand-Up Comedy Performance during the Sunday, January 7 telecast. The six inaugural nominees are some of the funniest emcees working today, but it’s Chris Rock who is predicted to make history by becoming the category’s first-ever winner, per Gold Derby odds. He’s nominated for his buzzed-about live Netflix special, “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage,” which drew eyeballs for the way in which he addressed the infamous Will Smith slap at the Oscars.
Rock has leading 18/5 odds to prevail on Sunday night. The other nominees, in descending order, are: “Trevor Noah: Where Was I” (Netflix) at 9/2 odds, “Ricky Gervais: Armageddon” (Netflix) at 9/2 odds, “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” (Netflix) at 11/2 odds, “Sarah Silverman: Someone You Love” (HBO) at 6/1 odds, and “Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact” (Netflix) at 15/2 odds.

The prophecy may now come to pass: There’s a good chance Jeremy Allen White wins a Golden Globe Award for Season 2 of “The Bear,” a week before he wins an Emmy… for Season 1 of “The Bear.” Ditto the show’s Ayo Edibiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
And so goes the most unusual TV awards season ever, where a delayed Primetime Emmys — with its June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, eligibility window — falls smack into a Globes, Critics’ Choice and guild awards season with a January to December, 2023 time frame.
The Hollywood strikes also may have had an impact on the even more limited-than-usual showing for broadcast networks at the Globes. ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” was the sole broadcast nominee, and even it saw its fortunes drop to just two nods: Best comedy and best female actor in a comedy (Quinta Brunson).

Ted Sarandos has welcomed a resolution to the actors strike to allow his streamer, and Hollywood, to get back to work.
“We’re mostly just thrilled the strike is behind us, and getting back to what we do best and what our writers and actors do best and all of our below the line folks, which is make great stories for the world,” the Netflix co-ceo told the Ubs Global Media and Communication Conference during a session that was webcast on Monday.
Sarandos reiterated Netflix would spend around $17 billion on programming content in 2024 post-Hollywood strikes, as long as that content spend matched the company’s expansion. “You just have to stay closely aligned to that growth.
In addition to a top-to-bottom organization overall, the Golden Globes has added two new categories for its next awards, for cinematic and box office achievement and stand-up comedy performance on television.
The creation for a box office achievement award is clearly a move to attract viewers who have tuned out kudofests in recent decades because they tend to focus on little-seen movies. The category honors artistically outstanding films that have grossed more than $150 million, with at least $100 million coming from the domestic box office, or have commensurate streaming viewership confirmed by a “trusted industry source.” Films released after Nov. 22 may qualify if their projected box office or viewership meets the benchmarks.
The field of contenders is surprisingly wide, with no fewer than 20 films eligible as of November, ranging from horror films, Marvel and DC Universe movies, action spectaculars and kid-friendly titles (including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Elemental”) to...

A new report from the Wall Street Journal suggests that Netflix could be ready to expand its sports streaming portfolio beyond a golf tournament.
Walking before running is one thing, but Netflix seemingly wants to make sure it has crawling down before even attempting to stand on two legs in the live sports streaming game. The world’s largest streaming service recently announced details for itsplans to host a live golf tournament featuring celebrities from its shows “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Full Swing,” but so far that is the only sports content the service has attempted to offer.
Netflix is reportedly mulling the addition of a live boxing match featuring YouTuber Jake Paul. The proposed boxing match would be Netflix’s second live sporting event ever. Netflix executives have resisted sports streaming in the past, but these events could signal a change in company thinking. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.

Months after Chris Rock’s Chris Rock: Selective Outrage aired on Netflix, Jada Pinkett Smith is sharing her thoughts on the comedy special.
In an interview with The New York Times, published online Saturday, Pinkett Smith reacted to Rock mocking her and Will Smith during his special, which came after the infamous Oscars slap.
“I remember my heart piercing, my heart cracking, and I remember my feelings being so hurt,” she said. “And then I remember being able to smile and wish him well at the same time.”
At the time, many viewers tuned in to the special to hear Rock address the moment he was slapped by Smith at the 2022 Academy Awards. The comedian not only dragged Smith during the program but also targeted Pinkett Smith and the couple’s marital issues.

Based on Gold Derby’s odds, one of the absolute tightest 2023 Creative Arts Emmy races involves Best Variety Special Writing contenders Chris Rock and John Mulaney, both of whom have previously conquered the category and are now facing off for the first time ever. Having both pushed their comedy to new levels of boldness in their respective Netflix specials “Selective Outrage” and “Baby J,” they provide voters with a truly tough choice when it comes to honoring the most impressive writing of the year.
This contest is made even more interesting by the fact that Rock and Wanda Sykes (“I’m an Entertainer”) are competing against each other after jointly earning four writing nominations and one win for “The Chris Rock Show” over two decades ago. Also included in this lineup are the sketch comedy special “Would It Kill You to Laugh?” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love....

Five years after scoring back-to-back Emmy wins for helming the 89th and 90th Oscars, Glenn Weiss could clinch his fifth Best Variety Special Directing trophy for his work on the latest Academy Awards ceremony. Given the knowledge that Jimmy Kimmel hosted said two 2010s Oscars events as well as the one Weiss is currently nominated for, a majority of Gold Derby’s Emmy predictors expect history to simply repeat itself, and they are wise to think so.
Weiss’s most formidable challengers in this contest are producing Emmy winner Jay-Z and seven-time directing nominee Hamish Hamilton, who are recognized for conducting Rihanna’s halftime performance at the most recent Super Bowl. Also in the mix are the directors of the stand-up specials “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.”

Just four days after wrapping his record-smashing, 330-show “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, legendary musician Elton John received his very first Emmy nomination for headlining Disney+’s “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium.” Given the program’s status as the clear frontrunner in this year’s Best Live Variety Special race, its Grammy, Oscar, and Tony-winning star is well on his way to finally joining the exclusive Egot club.
In order for John to reach this massive milestone, his special will have to win against “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and the latest editions of the Oscars, Tonys, and Super Bowl Halftime Show. Since Rock and all three of said institutions have been honored by the TV academy before, every nominee in this lineup should be considered a serious threat.
To determine what advantages the other contenders might have over “Elton John Live,” let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

Does Nick Offerman have Best Drama Guest Actor on lock? Will Elton John Egot? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to make their first post-nominations Creative Arts predictions.
Offerman has been the fan-favorite pick to win Best Drama Guest Actor for “The Last of Us” ever since “Long, Long Time” aired in January, but can he pull it off? He not only faces his episode co-star Murray Bartlett as expected but two more “Last of Us” guest stars in Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Montreal Woodard, who at 10 years old is the category’s youngest nominee and is the second deaf acting nominee ever after Marlee Matlin. If the “Last of Us” guys do vote-split, James Cromwell and his fiery eulogy on “Succession” are right there waiting in the wings.

Despite appearances on television throughout the past five decades, Sir Elton John just received his first ever Emmy Awards nomination. His Disney+ program “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium” is nominated for Best Variety Special (Live). A win would elevate him into a legendary Egot champion, the 19th person to join that exclusive club.
Nominees in this category are “Super Bowl Lvii Halftime Show Starring Rihanna,” “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage,” “The Oscars” and “75th Annual Tony Awards.”
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member already has two Oscars for Best Original Song (“Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” from “The Lion King” in 1994; and I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from “Rocketman” in 2019). He won a Tony Award for the original score of “Aida” in 2000. Six months after the launch of Netflix and Disney+’s ad-supported tiers, the offerings have seen strong adoption among new subscribers to the services.
According to findings from a survey of 2,506 U.S. adults by Samba TV and HarrisX shared exclusively with TheWrap, 19% of Disney+ subscribers and 11% of Netflix subscribers took advantage of the services’ ad-supported tiers. Within these groups, only 15% of each downgraded from a previous subscription. The remaining 85% signed up after the ad-supported tier was introduced.
In comparison, 26% used Netflix’s ad-free basic tier, 29% used the standard plan and 24% used the premium plan. As for Disney+, 29% of subscribers surveyed used the premium plan, 15% used the Disney+ Trio Premium bundle, 13% used the Disney+ Trio Basic bundle and 9% used the Disney+ Duo Basic bundle. Meanwhile, 8% of Disney+ subscribers and 6% of Netflix subscribers reported using someone else’s login information.

Netflix is entering a brave new world, though it’s not exactly an unexplored frontier. That world is live sports streaming, as reports from earlier this week suggest the company is looking to offer a live celebrity golf tournament this fall, with players pulled from its unscripted shows “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” and “Full Swing.”

If the tournament goes ahead as planned, it will be Netflix’s first-ever live sporting event. The service has attempted two live broadcasts before; the stand-up comedy special “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage,” and a reunion episode of its reality TV series “Love is Blind.” The first of these specials went relatively smoothly, but the second saw widespread issues that cannot be repeated if the company wants to become known as a competent livestreaming platform.
But from a technical aspect, livestreaming is just not that complex an issue anymore. Netflix...

It’s early days, but so far Netflix’s announcement that it will livestream a celebrity golf tournament featuring players from its PGA series “Full Swing” and Formula 1 racing show “Drive to Survive” seems to be stuck in a sand trap.

According to the data solutions firm Civic Science, Netflix users are not yet wild with enthusiasm about the tournament. Civic Science conducted a survey which found that only 22% of adults in the United States are either “somewhat” or “very” likely to watch the tournament, meaning that 78% of respondents weren’t yet compelled to watch the event.
In fact, Netflix users aren’t too crazy about the idea of watching any live sports on the service, at least not yet. Civic Science found that 34% of current Netflix customers are “somewhat” or “very” likely to watch sports on the platform. People who aren’t subscribed...

Netflix is reportedly in talks to livestream a celebrity golf tournament slated to take place this fall in Las Vegas, which would be the streamer’s first foray into live sports.
The tournament will include celebrities from the Netflix Formula One series “Drive to Survive” and golfing documentary “Full Swing.” Sources told The Wall Street Journal that the talks are in the preliminary stages, and a spokesperson for Netflix declined to comment.
The potential move into live sports comes after Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos told a Ubs investor conference in December that the company had “not seen a profit path” to “renting big sports.” At the time, Sarandos said that the economics surrounding live sports are “built around the economics of pay television” and “dramatically more expensive” on streaming.

Netflix is ready to get back on the horse. After a disastrous fumble of its last livestreamed event, the world’s largest streaming service is making another foray into the world of live broadcasts. The Wall Street Journal exclusively reported that Netflix is looking to create a celebrity golf tournament that it will livestream sometime this fall, marking the first time that the service has ever hosted a live sporting event.

The golf tournament will feature stars of Netflix’s two beloved sports docuseries “Drive to Survive” — which centers on Formula 1 racing — and “Full Swing” — a similar series that follows PGA Tour players. A golf tournament that features some of the world’s most well-known professional golfers would be a nice get for Netflix, and throwing in a few popular F1 drivers will only sweeten the pot.
The tournament is still in the planning stages...

Chris Rock called the police on Sunday evening when he saw someone filming him while he was inside his apartment in New York City.
The man did not attempt to break into Rock’s house, and it seems that he was only trying to film him from the fire escape.
The NYPD did not confirm the victim’s identity, but they did say that he was a 58-year-old man.
When the police arrived at Rock’s apartment, the perpetrator had already fled the scene. There have been reports of people who saw the man jump down from the fire escape and get into a Mercedes. He was wearing pink Crocs and a dark-colored jacket.

John Mulaney’s first stand-up comedy special in five years got off to a solid start on Netflix.
The special, John Mulaney: Baby J, gathered 379 million minutes of viewing for the week of April 24-30, ranking 10th among original series (it premiered on April 25). It’s the second stand-up special to make the Nielsen streaming rankings this year, after Chris Rock: Selective Outrage. The latter, Netflix’s first live stand-up special, opened with 418 million minutes (albeit over less than 36 hours from its March 4 premiere) and grew to 798 million the following week.
The Diplomat was the No. 1 overall title for the second week in a row. The Netflix political drama starring Keri Russell grew by about 7 percent week to week, hitting 1.39 billion minutes of watch time. The back half of Firefly Lane’s second (and final) season pushed that show over the billion-minute mark as well; it recorded 1.11 billion minutes of viewing.

If you tried to tune in live to watch the “Love is Blind” reunion special that Netflix aired on Sunday, April 16, you’re already well aware that it did not go the way the company intended. Users were locked out of the livestream for more than an hour, and most did not get to enjoy it in the live format that the streamer had intended to offer it in.

Company executives addressed the issues during its first quarter earnings call on Tuesday. Netflix co-ceo Greg Peters insisted the problem was not caused by a hardware issue, but rather a software issue that didn’t become apparent until Netflix tried to roll out the livestream to its millions of global users.
