European production-distribution giant Studiocanal is teaming with Spain’s Mr. Fields and Friends and Bambú, both led by producer Ramón Campos, on dramatic comedy “Rondallas,” written-directed by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo.
Sánchez Arévalo, one of Spain’s foremost crossover filmmakers, is coming back with “Rondallas” to a movie project oriented to classic cinema theater exhibition and distribution, after creating and directing a feature film and a TV series for Netflix.
Studiocanal will handle worldwide sales on “Rondallas,” scheduled to roll from March in Galicia, Northern Spain, with a still undisclosed cast.
“Rondallas” is produced by Campos, creator and executive producer of flagship Spanish TV dramas such as “Gran Hotel,” “Velvet,” “Cable Girls” and “Fariña,” all set up at his Madrid-based Bambú, one of the most game-changing of TV production companies in Spain, and partially owned by Studiocanal.

Any belief that the Oscars award the right films, directors and performances has faded over the years.
While every ceremony has a smattering of correct decisions – trophies handed to the right people for the right films – more often than not, the pervading feeling is one of pessimism caused by a deluge of undeserving recipients.
The Oscars are a far cry from what they claim to be – a celebration of the previous year’s cinematic offerings. But his does not stop people from trawling the internet the following morning in the hope that maybe, just maybe, the winners list impresses rather than disappoints.
With the 2023 ceremony taking place in March, we have highlighted 17 films that really should not have been awarded Oscars.

“Los pequeños amores,” the latest film from Celia Rico who made a splash at the 2018 San Sebastian Festival with “Journey to a Mother’s Room,” has been acquired for international sales by Spain-based Latido Films.
Produced by Barcelona-based Arcadia Motion Pictures, which co-produced Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s 2023 Goya winner and box office breakout “The Beasts, and France’s Noodles Production, Rico’s second feature is set in a bucolic countryside. It weighs in as a mother-daughter two-hander sparked after strongly independent mother Ani falls over walking the dog and is forced to use a wheelchair to get around.
Daughter Teresa cuts short a vacation to come to her side, their co-habitation grating and revealing multiple – sometime generational – differences as the film peels back the layers of their relation, exposing both women’s ambitions and fears.
Adriana Azores plays Ani, María Vázquez is Teresa.

What do “The Broadway Melody” (1929), “Grand Hotel” (1932) and “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1935) all have in common? In Oscar history, they are the only films to have won the Academy’s most coveted award — and nothing else. Could Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” join that select group this year, despite being the second-most-nominated movie of the lot?
Of the dark comedy’s nine noms, only three have a viable path to glory: Colin Farrell for actor, McDonagh for original screenplay and best picture. The other mentions — director, supporting actress and the double-dipping (and vote-splitting) supporting actors among them — face hurdles too high to clear.
Farrell is walking steadily with a Golden Globe for lead actor (comedy), but the film was shut out at the Critics Choice Awards. With Austin Butler (“Elvis”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) equally building on their movies’ buzz, all eyes are on BAFTA and SAG...

Universal International Studios and Jenna Bush Hager’s Thousand Voices are teaming with author Jessica George to develop a series adaptation of her keenly anticipated debut novel “Maame.”
The book rights to “Maame” were acquired in a competitive deal and auction by St Martin’s Press in the U.S. and Hodder & Stoughton in the U.K. German rights were pre-empted in a two-book deal by Sarah Leibl at btb, with translation rights handled by David Higham Associates.
Released on Jan. 31 in the U.S. and on Feb. 14 in the U.K. “Maame,” which has many meanings in Ghana’s Twi language, means woman in the context of the novel. It revolves around London-based Maddie, who is the primary caretaker for her father, who suffers from advanced stage Parkinson’s. When her mother returns from a sojourn in Ghana, Maddie, a self-acknowledged late bloomer, leaps at the chance to get out...

Lionsgate+, formerly known as Starzplay, has set March 3 as the premiere date of its darkly comic original series ‘Nacho’ across all Latin America.
The news comes as Atresplayer Premium in Spain has announced that “Nacho” will bow on its service on March 5 as an Atresplayer Premium Original, in other words an exclusive in Spain on the adventurous service whose recent Originals include “Cardo,” produced by Los Javis.
Bowing its international trailer exclusively on Variety, the eight-episode series stars Martiño Rivas (“Cable Girls”) who plays the legendary Nacho Vidal whose notable physique makes him a star in Spain’s incipient porn industry in the ‘90s.
“Proving his talents reach far beyond his most infamous 25 cm [9.8 inches], Nacho changed the rules of the game in the 1990s when he became an international superstar,” the synopsis goes.

Last awards season, Apple’s heartwarming family drama “Coda” became just the seventh Best Picture recipient in history to pull off a clean sweep at the Oscars. That is, it not only claimed the top prize — it won every category in which it was nominated. Can A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” now pull off a similar feat at the 2023 Oscars?
Here’s a quick review of the previous seven clean sweepers:
“Wings,” 1927-28 (2/2)
“Grand Hotel,” 1931-32 (1/1)
“It Happened One Night” 1934 (5/5)
“Gigi,” 1958 (9/9)
“The Last Emperor,” 1987 (9/9)
“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” 2003 (11/11)
“Coda,” 2021 (3/3)
The return of the Oscar clean sweep delivered by “Coda” (which also won Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur and Best Adapted Screenplay for Sian Heder) actually follows a pattern set forth by “Wings” almost a century ago. That is, home runs don’t happen every Oscar night. They’re more of a once every-few-decades phenomenon.

After having its world premiere at the 2017 Venice International Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro‘s “The Shape of Water” was awarded the coveted Golden Lion. From that moment on experts penciled it into their predictions as a front-runner going into the Oscars. Although at that stage in the race, there was still quite a long road ahead. Now that del Toro’s new animated film “Pinocchio” has made its Netflix streaming debut, let’s take a look back at how his “Shape of Water” Oscars windfall took shape.

There is no bigger swing this year from HBO Max in Spain than its original series “Garcia!” Produced by Madrid’s Zeta Studios, the company behind Netflix’s uber hit “Elite,” it also marks a push by HBO Max in Europe into series of broader appeal than the traditional HBO brand.
Dropping worldwide its first two episodes on HBO Max from Oct. 28, the six-part thriller played to applause at its world premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest where the series’ Spanish director, Eugenio Mira, is a firm favourite, winning best director in 2005 for his feature debut, “The Birthday,” and screening there in 2013 “Grand Piano,” starring Elijah Wood and John Cusack.
“One of our obsessions, and mine in particular, is trying to do things which have not been done before,” Miguel Salvat, VP commissioning editor Spain for HBO Max, explained to Variety at San Sebastian last year at a presentation which included “Garcia!

Famed for its premium series, European production-distribution giant Studiocanal and Spanish partner Bambu Producciones are now driving ever deeper into premium daily dramas, first with “Two Lives” and now with “The Vow,” which Studiocanal is bringing onto the market at Mipcom.
The show is produced by Studiocanal-owned Bambú Producciones, led by Ramón Campos and Teresa Fernández Valdés, and the creator of successful daily shows, Josep Cister.
Spanish public broadcaster Rtve, which co-produces with Studiocanal and Bambu, retains rights to Latin America and the U.S.
Created by Cister, “The Vow,” which went into production in Spain this September, weighs in at 122 one-hour episodes.
Unspooling across the stunning landscape of Southern Spain, “The Vow” begins in 1913 as Jana, a maid at the declining but still ruthless house of Luján seeks revenge for the death of her mother, while she searches for her brother, abducted at birth, most likely by the Lujans.

It took a global pandemic to get Interpol frontman Paul Banks to speak at a reasonable volume. For two decades, the singer and multi-instrumentalist has done a fairly good impression of a fire searcher, shouting through post-punk smoke at survivors. But because the band wrote its seventh full-length remotely, he mostly abandoned the known pleasures of Ian Curtis worship for a more nuanced approach. Banks’ version of keening (which is still pretty full-throated) kicked over a chain of dominos, which allow Interpol to make more introspective, textured, and altogether breathable...

From there, the narrative flows in reverse, as the couple party in their room and stumble back to the hotel from a night on the town. It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Munich-based production and distribution house Beta Film has created a Spanish scripted division, with former Atresmedia exec Mercedes Gamero and Warner Bros. Pictures International España’s Pablo Nogueroles tapped to lead it.
Beta Fiction Spain will produce TV series and feature films, offer production services and act as a theatrical distributor in Spain.
The launch pushes Beta further into Iberia following the launch of Javier Pérez de Silva’s formats-focused Beta Entertainment Spain. The company has been a consistent investor in Spanish content over the years, selling several high-profile dramas such as Gran Hotel — often dubbed the Spanish Downton Abbey — and tying with likes of Atresmedia and Movistar+.
Gamero worked in acquisitions at Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia for 18 years, and worked as a producer on Academy Award-nominee Klaus and Goya Award Best Picture winners Futbolin and Marshland.

Any belief that the Oscars award the right films, directors and performances has faded over the years.
While every ceremony has a smattering of correct decisions – trophies handed to the right people for the right films – more often than not, the pervading feeling is one of pessimism caused by a deluge of undeserving recipients.
Despite the recent victories of Parasite and Nomadland, the Oscars are a far cry from what they claim to be – a celebration of the previous year’s cinematic offerings. But his does not stop people from trawling the internet the following morning in the hope that maybe, just maybe, the winners list impresses rather than disappoints.
With the 2022 ceremony arriving this weekend, we have highlighted 17 films that really should not have been awarded Oscars.

A weekend trio of big wins for Netflix at the DGA, BAFTA and Critics Choice awards has given Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” the gas required to make it over the finish line. That’s if it can keep its closest competitors — “Belfast” from Kenneth Branagh and “Coda” from Siân Heder — at bay.

Rising Australian star Lincoln Younes has been cast as the lead of “Last King of the Cross,” a biographical series about a notorious night club owner and gangster being produced for Paramount Plus.
Told in ten episodes, the series is an operatic story of two brothers, Sam and John Ibrahim who organize the street but lose each other in their ascent to power.
Kieran Darcy-Smith has writing credits and is set as the director. Production in Sydney, New South Wales, is due to begin at the weekend, according to local reports.
Based on John Ibrahim’s autobiography of the same name, the series tracks Ibrahim’s rise from a poverty-stricken Lebanese immigrant with no education, no money, and no prospects, to Australia’s most infamous nightclub mogul in Sydney’s Kings Cross. The district is a mini-Atlantic City, barely half a mile long with every form of criminality on display.

Netflix has the right to flex after this weekend’s trio of big wins from the Directors Guild of America (DGA), BAFTA and Critics Choice Awards, where it won the top prizes with Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog.” With its mighty 12 nomination haul, and the criticism from Oscar-nominee Sam Elliott over the movie’s homosexual themes, arguably helping it along, the film could be headed for B-e-s-t-p-i-c-t-u-r-e (so to speak). However, with two 50/50 screenplay categories up for grabs — “Belfast” and “Licorice Pizza” battling for original, and “Coda” and “The Power of the Dog” angling for adapted — the answer to which film wins the Academy’s top prize is within those races.

Ever since “Coda’s” victory for best ensemble cast at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Oscar pundits have been reconsidering it as a possible dark horse to win Best Picture at the Oscars. But can a film win top honors with only three total nominations, especially when none of those nominations are for directing or editing? Well, the three nominations the film did get line up perfectly with the Oscar wins for other recent Best Picture champs.
“Coda” is nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Sian Heder). If it wins all of those it would join three other films in the past 10 years that won the same trifecta of Picture, supporting acting, and writing. First came “12 Years a Slave” (2013), which won Picture, Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o), and Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley). “Grand Hotel” (1932) holds a special place in Oscar pundits’ hearts. To date, it’s the only film to win Best Picture without receiving any other nominations. Because of that unique stat, “Grand Hotel” is often cited as an example when trying to make the case for a movie winning Best Picture without having a corresponding such-and-such nomination. How is that relevant to this year’s Academy Awards? Let me introduce you to “Coda.”

” I never could understand why it has to be just even, male and female. They’re invited for dinner, not for mating.”
Jean Harlow and John Barrymore in Dinner At Eight (1935) will be available on Blu-ray October 26th from Warner Archive
Dinner at Eight, a vastly entertaining behind-closed-doors glimpse into the lives of the troubled and troublemaking who’s who of people invited to a posh Manhattan party, is served with ample helpings of humor and melodrama. Buoyed by the success of the studio’s multistarred, multistoried Grand Hotel the year before, producer David O. Selznick aspired to something grander – and found it in this George Cukor-directed adaptation of the George S. Kaufman/Edna Ferber stage hit. Highlights include Jean Harlow and Wallace Beery’s bitter battle of the sexes, hostess Billie Burke’s hissy fit and Marie Dressler’s grande dame worldliness. Of course, there’s only one...
