Production continues on DC Studios' Superman, and just days after sharing that widely discussed first look at David Corenswet's Man of Steel, director James Gunn has now shared a new behind-the-scenes photo.
This one highlights comic book luminaries invited to set by the filmmaker and executive, including current Superman writers Jason Aaron and Joshua Williamson, along with legends like Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway.
Justice League International's Kevin Maguire was also on hand, as was Mister Terrific's co-creator John Ostrander and DC Comics heavyweights Jim Lee and Scott Snyder. You'll also spot All-Star Superman artist Frank Quitely (that comic has seemingly been a key source of inspiration for the DC Studios co-ceo).
"Great day with some comic book titans visiting the [Superman] set," Gunn said on Instagram. "So many of my heroes all at once it was really overwhelming."

This Batman article contains spoilers.
Joker continuity is a bit messy by design. Ever since the Clown Prince of Crime declared that he “preferred multiple choice” in Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s seminal 1988 comic Batman: The Killing Joke, it’s been very tough to nail down just what is true and what isn’t about the villain’s origin story. Was the Joker once a failed comedian who went mad after criminals murdered his family and he fell into a vat of chemicals? Maybe. Or was he originally a crime boss known as the Red Hood? Is his real name actually Jack?
Multiple choice has mostly worked well for the Joker, who is meant to be Gotham’s embodiment of true evil. The fact that his story is indecipherable and ultimately unknowable makes him that much scarier of a threat for Batman. But things are getting a little too convoluted now.

Dstlry Launches Spectregraph, James Tynion IV and Christian Ward’s Psychedelic Haunted-House Descent into Hell: "Dstlry, the next-generation publisher redefining creator-owned comic books and collectibles, is proud to announce Spectregraph, a cerebral horror masterpiece crafted by multiple Eisner-award-winners James Tynion IV and Christian Ward, with stunning cover art from Ward and Martin Simmonds (The Department of Truth). The first issue will launch in comic books stores in April 2024.
Spectregraph revolves around an isolated mansion nestled into the coastline, a short drive north of Los Angeles. Rumors have haunted the place for years—its owner a titan of American industry, with a strange fascination in the occult and the paranormal. The richest men and women in the country have whispered to each other, trying to understand what he was building alone in that mansion for all those years. And now finally, with his death, and his estate open for sale…...

At the end of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 one-shot Batman: The Killing Joke, the Joker lays out his worldview in plain terms. After testing his theory that “one bad day” could make even the most decent person into a madman like himself, the Joker tells his nemesis, “It’s all a joke! Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for… it’s all a monstrous, demented gag!”
Even more than the grisly sights of The Killing Joke—in which the Clown Prince of Crime sets out to prove his theory by brutalizing Batgirl Barbara Gordon and tormenting her father Commissioner Gordon—that line has set the course of Joker stories of the past several decades. Fans and creators alike try to push the Joker to edgier extremes, forgetting how Batman answers when his nemesis asks why he isn’t laughing. “Because I’ve heard it before,” he responds. “And...

Comics Author James Tynion IV, Artist Christian Ward Team for Ghost Story ‘Spectregraph’ (Exclusive)
Modern horror comics master James Tynion IV has some new scare fare for 2024, this time a series for upstart publisher Dstlry.
The creator of acclaimed and best-selling comics Something Is Killing the Children and The Nice House on the Lake is teaming with Christian Ward, the writer-artist behind the current Batman miniseries Batman: City of Madness for Spectregraph, described as a ghost story steeped in the decay of a century of capitalism.
The logline is thus: For years, the mansion has sat strangely, nestled into the coastline just a short drive north of Los Angeles. Rumors have haunted the place for years, its owner a titan of American industry, with a strange fascination in the occult and the paranormal. For decades, the richest men and women in the country have whispered to each other, trying to understand what he was building alone in that mansion for all those years. And now finally,...

The old DC Universe is dead, long live the DC Universe. As we get closer and closer to the rebirth of James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC hierarchy of power, there is plenty to be excited about, from new takes on iconic characters and also fresh new faces making the leap to the big screen.
One of the most exciting aspects of the new universe is the opportunity to get deeply weird, and no project feels as full of potential for weirdness as "Swamp Thing." We don't know much about the movie just yet, but it is a sign of confidence, Swamp Thing was the first upcoming DC movie to get a director announcement (other than James Gunn tackling "Superman: Legacy"), so it is clear DC's resident green monster will be an important part of the new universe.

Beloved limited horror comic series Wytches, written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Jock, is finally set to get an adaptation.
Variety reports that Amazon ordered an animated series based on the six-issue comics published from October 2014 through March 2015.
The Image Comic series tells of 17-year-old Sailor Rook and the Rook family as they moved to a small New Hampshire town following a tragic incident. They want to start over but realize there’s an evil lying in wait in the woods just outside of town. Ancient creatures that feed on our deepest fears and hopes.
As the title indicates, it’s a horror series whose lurking evil is witches. These witches aren’t your average run-of-the-mill witches but petrifying creatures made even more nightmarish thanks to vivid art and coloring. A somewhat bleak but compelling family drama merged with a horror story that declares its brutality in issue one,...

Happy New Year, Daily Dead readers! Today, I'm kicking off our annual "Favorites" series with my 2022 picks and you'll see favorites from other Daily Dead team members throughout the week. On this week's episode of Corpse Club, we'll also be discussing 2022 favorites and what we're looking forward to in the new year. Our favorites are a little different from a traditional "Best Of" list and our lists can include anything from movies and streaming shows to collectibles and events. In short, we’re sharing with you a list of our favorite horror experiences from 2022.
This year was interesting for me in that I truly felt I hit that tipping point where more was being released than I could possibly keep up on. If you stick to just watching movies, it's not impossible to check out every horror release, but when you add TV series, video games, and graphic novels, it becomes challenging.

Forest Inman is a horror film obsessive who digitizes old films for the famed Aurora movie studio. When Forest stumbles across a seemingly forgotten canister of footage, he just might have discovered the remnants of the lost classic Night of the Ghoul.

Even the most diehard Flash fan has to admit that evil speedsters are a dime a dozen. For every Barry Allen or Wally West who enters the Speed Force, there’s a Reverse Flash or Black Flash, who use their superspeed to do horrendous harm to reality. So it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to learn that in the 9th and final season of The Flash on The CW, Barry will be facing off against yet another evil speedster: the Red Death.
Say what you will about the saturation of speedsters in the world of The Flash, the origin of the Red Death in more recent DC comics does set the character apart, as does the actor playing Red Death for The CW version: Javicia Leslie, who most recently portrayed the title character on Batwoman. This makes A Lot of sense.

There’s something charmingly accessible about Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo. Talking to them, you never get the feeling that you’re talking to a multimedia titan of geek culture or one of the most beloved Batman artists of all time, respectively. It feels more like running into two guys tailgating outside an Ozzy Osborne show, inviting you to geek out with them about their comic art collection, shooting the breeze about the car they’re working on together, and periodically dropping preternatural draftsmanship wisdom sprinkled with comic art history. And then McFarlane will say something like, “I’m in the business of cool. Period,” and you suddenly remember that you’re talking to two of the biggest names to ever create comics and that they’re teaming up for a fresh Batman Spawn crossover that is likely to be one of the biggest books of the decade.

Exclusive: Comic book and graphic novel publisher Idw has unveiled nine new original comic book projects set for release beginning in July as part of a new initiative. While the focus is on creating new comic book IP, following publishing of the comics, the Idw Entertainment Group will work to potentially develop the IP for film, television and other entertainment mediums the way the company has done in the past with such titles as Wynonna Earp and Locke & Key.
Reflecting genres including crime thriller, supernatural horror, science fiction and epic fantasy, the projects hail from New York Times bestselling authors, top industry artists and writers, as well as newcomers, including Scott Snyder, G. Willow Wilson and Stephen Graham Jones, among others. Additionally, Idw has additional projects underway for 2023 and beyond, including a comic book series by Academy Award–winning director, screenwriter, novelist, and showrunner John Ridley and several original graphic novels aimed at middle grade and YA audiences.
Beginning with Scott Snyder’s Dark Spaces: Wildfire in July (see details below), Idw will be publishing the projects monthly.
“A year ago we gave ourselves a mission: to make Idw the destination for premier talent and rising stars,” says Mark Doyle, editorial director of Originals. “This is an unprecedented moment in Idw’s history, and there’s been a tremendous team effort from our creative and editorial teams and everyone at the company to develop a stellar slate of original stories—and we’re having a blast doing it!”
Here is a trailer for Idw’s new initiative:
“Throughout our history, Idw has provided a supportive environment for passionate creators to pursue their artistic vision, taking form as such beloved titles as 30 Days of Night, Locke & Key, V Wars, Canto, October Faction, and Wynonna Earp, just to name a few,” says publisher Nachie Marsham. “Our new Originals editorial division, spearheaded by Mark Doyle, reflects our commitment to building upon that legacy. More than ever before, we are reaching out to the creative community, welcoming fresh ideas that span a diverse range of genres, and offering audiences wild new worlds to explore.”
The first nine projects are:
Dark Spaces: Wildfire, a thriller series written by Scott Snyder with art by Hayden Sherman, follows a group of female inmate firefighters deep into the smoldering California hills, where their desperate heist of a burning mansion will lead them to the score of a lifetime…or a deadly trap!
Trve Kvlt, a five-issue miniseries written by Scott Bryan Wilson with art by Liana Kangas, introduces Marty Tarantella, a down-on-his-luck loser whose last-ditch scheme to escape a lifetime of fast-food service sets him on a collision course with a cult of violent, Devil-worshiping lunatics!
Crashing, a five-issue miniseries written by Matthew Klein with art by Morgan Beem, throws open the doors of an emergency room filled with casualties of a superhuman war, where Rose Osler, a doctor on her own path of addiction and recovery, faces the most dangerous day of her medical career.
Earthdivers, an ongoing series written by Stephen Graham Jones with art by Davide Gianfelice, unites four Indigenous survivors in an apocalyptic near future as they embark on a bloody, one-way mission to save the world by traveling back in time to kill Christopher Columbus and prevent the creation of America.
Dead Seas, a six-issue miniseries written by Cavan Scott with art by Nick Brokenshire, transforms a cynical convict into a reluctant hero when he’s trapped on a sinking prison ship swarming with ghosts. Can he unite desperate criminals, pirates, and brutal guards as they try to escape a watery grave?
Golgotha Motor Mountain, a five-issue miniseries written by Matthew Erman and Lonnie Nadler with art by Ryan Lee, is a high-octane, redneck motor massacre about two meth-cooking brothers and their attempt to make it home in one piece as all manner of cosmic alien horrors are hot on their trail.
Arca, an original graphic novel written by Van Jensen with art by Jesse Lonergan, leaves a dying Earth behind as billionaires establish a luxurious new society out among the stars, tended to by teenage indentured servants. But one girl discovers that the good life promised for their years of servitude was a lie…
The Sin Bin, a six-issue miniseries written by Robbie Thompson with art by Molly Murakami, hits the road with washed-up hockey player Dale “Dukes” Duquesne, who moonlights as a monster hunter during away games with his daughter, Cat, in tow, hoping to find her mother’s killer.
The Hunger and the Dusk, a twelve-issue storyline written by G. Willow Wilson with art by Chris Wildgoose, upends an age-old conflict between humans and orcs by introducing a new, deadlier species. Fragile alliances form—and unexpected romances blossom—as former enemies wade into battle together to save their two races.

L.A. rock band Starcrawler have released a surreal video for their new single “Goodtime Girl,” featuring cameos from Danny Trejo and David Hasselhoff. It takes place in an urban hellscape reminiscent of The Purge and The Warriors where masked gangs battle in the streets. In the end, Trejo and Hasselhoff are revealed as two of the masked fighters.

It's safe to say that horror is alive and well at DC Comics. In addition to the spooky stories creeping across the paneled pages in the DC Black Label and Hill House Comics, DC has launched a new horror imprint today with the release of The Conjuring: The Lover #1.
A prelude to The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (which is being released in theaters and on HBO Max on June 4th—read Heather Wixson's review here), The Conjuring: The Lover is written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Rex Ogle and features eerily atmospheric artwork by Garry Brown, and with the first issue out now, Daily Dead had the pleasure of taking part in a virtual roundtable interview with David, Rex, and DC Comics Editor Katie Kubert to discuss expanding The Conjuring cinematic universe in comic book form, an ambitious idea that Katie helped make a reality.

DC comics fans are in for a real treat with Dark Knights: Metal, a once in a lifetime comic event written by Scott Snyder, penciled by Greg Capullo, inked by Jonathon Glapion, and colored by Fco Plascencia. Metal was published starting in 2017 spanning from June all the way until March, 2018 with a total of 6 issues released on a monthly basis. Metal brought Snyder and Capullo together again after their acclaimed New 52 Batman series, which is a culmination of The Court of Owls, Death of the Family, Zero Year, and Endgame. Later this month, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is hitting HBO Max. Despite the anticipation and a near-guaranteed positive reception from the vocal #ReleaseTheSnyderCut fan contingent, this will likely be Snyder’s last foray in the DC Universe. Indeed, one of the studio’s chief complaints with Snyder’s vision, which they believe impacted box office receipts, was his darker tone when compared with the quippier MCU. However, Snyder’s approach only mirrored many of DC’s most popular storylines, from Frank Miller’s violent The Dark Knight Returns to the on-screen The Dark Knight Trilogy from director Christopher Nolan. Snyder can hardly be blamed for expanding on what audiences were already responding to when it came to DC characters on film.
Less than a decade ago, Warner Brothers was hot off of the success of Nolan’s trio of films that no one would describe as light-hearted or quippy.

Today sees the release of Nocterra issue #1, the brand new series from Scott Snyder and Tony S. Daniel, where the world is plunged into everlasting darkness that turns the living into monsters. With pockets of survivors having to stay close to artificial light, the story follows Val, a "ferryman" that transports people and goods through darkness to take them to safety.
Having read the first issue, I highly recommend it to our readers, I'm really excited to see where the story goes in future issues, and I had a chance to catch up with Scott Snyder, who talked about the successful Kickstarter campaign, the state of indie comics, and what to expect from his new series and imprint:
When we last talked, you had just launched the Kickstarter campaign for Nocterra. Having significantly exceeded the campaign goal, can you talk about your experience and learnings going through the whole process?...

James Tynion IV has been writing Batman in some form or another for his entire career. He began his time at DC Comics by writing backup stories for Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman during the New 52 era, fleshing out the history of the villainous Court of Owls before landing his first owl-centric series titled Talon. Tynion was one of the lead writers on Batman Eternal and Batman & Robin Eternal, two weekly series that mainlined years of Batman continuity back into the New 52. And following the Rebirth reset, he got a long run with the Bat family on Detective Comics.
With all that time on the Bat-books, it’s a little surprising to see the deluge of ideas still pouring out of the writer now that he’s got the flagship title all to himself. Tynion took over after Tom King’s 85-issue mega run, and proceeded to pit...

The end of Dark Nights: Death Metal #7 is the last stop of more than a decade of Scott Snyder driving the DC metaverse’s bus. The conclusion to the Dark Nights saga, which started in 2017 with Dark Nights: Metal and ran through an entire Justice League series before concluding here, closes off storylines Snyder and his creative partner Greg Capullo seeded as far back as their first issue of Batman when the New 52 launched.
And with Infinite Frontier and Future State, DC’s next publishing initiatives, on deck, it’s worth taking a look at what Death Metal did so we can try and understand how the pieces fit together. Because if there’s one thing to take away from Death Metal, it’s that everything fits together. Even if you really gotta stomp on the pieces to get them to stick.

It’s time for something new for DC.
For the last few weeks, the publisher has been teasing what that something new will look like, announcing new creative teams for titles like Superman, Action Comics, Wonder Woman and Nightwing, as well as new series for characters and concepts such as Swamp Thing, The Joker, Teen Titans and Suicide Squad.
The Hollywood Reporter can now reveal that the new beginning has its own beginning — an extra-length special issue featuring multiple stories by various creative teams, titled Infinite Frontier No. 0.
