The subject of time travel and quantum mechanics is an interesting topic for sci-fi filmmakers to munch on, and Larry Wade Carrell’s 2023 film, The Quantum Devil, is no exception. It’s a sly wink at the fact that not every quest for knowledge yields Nobel-worthy results. Sometimes, it lands you in a parallel universe where the extraordinary is the new ordinary, and danger lurks around every corner. Meet our fearless foursome: Matthews, Luke, Ivanna, and Sophie, who’re on a wild goose chase to solve a riddle that’s more mind-boggling than a Picasso painting. As they go down the rabbit hole, they come across a dimension where the rules of life and death don’t matter, old secrets pop up, and who knows what else!
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens in the Film?

Featuring: Zeph E. Daniel, Julian Sands, Brian Yuzna, Screaming Mad George, Richard Stanley | Directed by Larry Wade Carrell
It’s one of the most controversial, influential and groundbreaking horror satires of the 1980s. Brian Yuzna’s Society told a terrifying surreality of what the rich were doing to the poor in shocking, sexual detail. But did you know it was based on truth and took inspiration from the satanic ritual abuse carried out by the Beverly Hills elite Keith family? Or that son Woody Keith changed his name to Zeph E. Daniel and co-scripted Society to exorcise the demons from his violent youth? This is the full, appalling story of how Daniel’s autobiography became a classic chiller for the ages.
Have you read that official synopsis above? Does it sound bizarre? Well, this documentary is more bizarre than you can imagine!

As seems customary in film now, Marvel often lead the way, even if it’s only in its influence on the film industry. When they started the ‘Marvel Universe’ many other studios and films tried to replicate this with their own characters (and continue to do so), with mostly unsuccessful attempts. More recently, they introduced a ‘multiverse’ to expand on this, and once again that became The buzzword in the industry with more films trying to emulate it. Opening with a scene featuring a young woman strapped to a chair, legs in stirrups and screaming for her life as a man places what can only be described as a rather brutal looking corkscrew between her legs, The Next Girl sets its stall out very early.
Kidnap, torture and trauma are seemingly the name of the day in director Larry Wade Carrell’s latest feature, which sees a young woman, Lorien (Lacey Cofran), abducted by a strange group of human traffickers who use drug and trauma-based mind control to turn women into “Sofia” dolls. Trapped in a waking nightmare she fights for a way to escape, to avoid becoming the titular next girl…

Send in the dolls… Doll Factory is in the fine tradition of campy, low budget horror comedy films that leans heavily on stereotypes and wears its cheesy sensibilities on its sleeve. Baby dolls are attacking people! If you need ask “why?” this film is not for you.
We kick off with a flashback sequence, 2 cops and their ‘ethnically insensitive’ acquaintance are in an abandoned factory, ostensibly fighting for their lives but really just giving ‘banter’ and, aside from the racial stereotype situation, it is not terrible. We then flash forward to the present… Sexy teens at a Halloween house party are casually talking about sexual activities and the like (we have some terrific drunk acting) and suddenly one the girls,...

Being a huge fan of the horror genre means that I have watched many strange movies. From a killer car tyre to a zombie musical to killer sushi – I could go on and on. And She Rises, in different ways, is right up there with the strangest.
The story itself sounds simple enough, as a director and her lead actor end up staying in a cabin in the woods for a night, owned by a seemingly shy but normal woman and her not so normal Father. But that is as simple as things get. Soon their female host becomes a lot less innocent and sweet as she first seemed, while her Father might just be ready to kill someone.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the distributor. Level 33 Entertainment is an advertiser on this site. Director: Giorgio Serafini. Writer: Garry Charles. Cast: Eric Balfour, Ladon Drummond, Kristin Cochell, Joe Grisaffi and Larry Wade Carrell. 200 Degrees is a small indie production. From Smoke Hammer Media and West Arts, this film centrally stars Eric Balfour (Backcountry, 2014). He plays the ultra deceitful Ryan Hinds. Trapped in an industrial kiln, there is no way out for Ryan, unless he can face the truth. But, this very unloveable character never integrates, nor lives the truth, in any way. 200 Degrees is very much inspired by James Wan's Saw (2004), especially in setting and plot design. Almost the entire film is housed in one, small room. As well, 200 Degrees is in every way a minimalist production. Almost all interactions take place on a phone, or through a speaker. The entire film rests with Balfour,...

Exclusive: Never one to rest on his laurels, the Chilean genre filmmaker has reunited with his Downhill co-writer Barry Keating and is moving ahead with the Turkey-set horror film.
Valladares expects to commence shooting in Istanbul at the end of the month on Garip, which until this week had been known as Foe.
The story follows a group of people who uncover a tomb at Tokat Castle that according to legend was the site of Count Dracula’s incarceration.
Gianni Capaldi, Natalie Burn of The Expendables 3, Guillermo Ivan, Katrin Assi and Larry Wade Carrell star.
Barry Keating based his screenplay on a story by Loris Curci, who produces alongside Baris Abacigil and Fikret Soğanci.
Istanbul-based production and services company Fbr Productions is an investor in Garip and produces.
Valladares wrapped production on Tuesday on the micro-budget survival thriller Downhill (pictured).

A year has passed, and another Texas Frightmare Weekend has come and gone! Last year Tfw expanded dramatically with a much larger location to become the Southwest's premier horror con. This year they proved that isn't going to change anytime soon.
This con is so hot that guests have begun just showing up without an invite. Veteran character actor Glenn Morshower ("Millennium", The Crazies 2010) popped up on Friday and was set up in the lobby until Saturday, when a table was located for him in the main room. He was swamped all weekend so it's a good thing he came!
The focus of the con (which ran May 3rd-5th) was originally "The Walking Dead," but with a few cancellations (almost all replaced with other guests, some from "Twd"), the star of the Weekend became Danny "Machete" Trejo, who was mobbed every time he was at his table. The presence...

At Texas Frightmare Weekend 2012, I stumbled across a little movie called Jacob (review here), and it completely blew me away. For a completely independent picture made for extremely little money, it packed an emotional punch that few mainstream horror films can pull off.
Truth be told, I've paid to see movies in the theater that display less skill and power than Jacob, and that's a damn shame, but finally someone was wise enough to pick up this gem for distribution, and as of April 16th, Jacob is out on DVD and Blu-ray for your viewing pleasure courtesy of Kino Lorber's Horizon Movies.
Jacob had a return performance at this year's Texas Frightmare Weekend to celebrate its release, and I sat down with main man Larry Carrell to chat about writing, directing, and acting in the film.
Mr. Dark: Give us the background on yourself, and what you've done so far.

Houston, Texas is best known for oil and cowboys. Like most things, there is way more than meets the stereotype. My favorite Houston secret is Worldfest, a nine day international independent film festival held every April.
What is so great about it? It’s a point of pride for Houstonians because it is the oldest in the world. It was founded in August 1961 as Cinema Arts, and International Film Society. It became the international film festival it is today in April 1968. In all of this time it has been under the care of founder Hunter Todd. His goal was to create a quality film festival for independent filmmakers.
Meh, who cares how old it is. If it’s last power doesn’t impress you, here’s a short list of some of the filmmakers discovered at Worldfest:
Steven Spielberg George Lucas Ridley Scott The Coen Brothers Oliver Stone David Lynch

The Legend Of Darkhorse County, written and directed by Shawn Welling, is set in the titular town where a serial killer/kidnapper is hunted by Sheriff McElroy, played by veteran actor Lee Majors and Jacob’s Larry Wade Carrell at different ages. “That was so cool for me,” Carrell [pictured below at right with Majors] tells Fango, “because I was the biggest The Six Million Dollar Man fan when I was young. I used to run around, going [mimics Steve Austin’s “bionic” sound effect]. There are these murders going on in Darkhorse County, and McElroy’s on the trail, trying to catch this guy. He’s not really aware of the supernatural force that’s out there, just that these kids keep going missing. As he gets closer to tracking him down, he gets in deeper than he thought he would with the supernatural element.”

It's been a frighteningly entertaining week down in the Bayou City. SplatterFest — Houston's leading horror film festival — is in full swing, delivering eerie entertainment to an eager Southeast Texas audience. But, sadly, it all ends tonight.
Since Tuesday, hundreds of horror and genre fans have flooded the Alamo Drafthouse for a nonstop cinematic menu of horrific exploitation fare garnished with a side of special guests.
After kicking off with two straight nights of horror shorts created specifically for the event, SplatterFest presented the world premieres of the rape/revenge flick Cherry Bomb and the faux-documentary Humans vs. Zombies.
Last night belonged to legendary genre vet Michael Biehn and his lovely wife, actress/producer Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, who is Michael's partner in every sense of the word. The couple was at SplatterFest to support two special films. The evening opened with a showing of the Biehns' new badass grindhouse thriller, The Victim,...

While attending Texas Frightmare Weekend last month I had the pleasure of meeting Larry Wade Carrell, vice president of Odyssee Pictures and writer/director of the dark horror film Jacob, along with one of the films executive producers, Cynthia Ivans Lauer.
Here is a synopsis of the film…
Lonely and disturbed, Jacob Kell loved his little sister more than anything on Earth. When she is tragically murdered by their stepfather in a drunken rage, Jacob retaliates the only way he knows how… and all those who cross his path will know his brutal vengeance.
I was able to convince Larry to allow me to ask him a few questions about this very powerful and wonderfully executed film.
What inspired you to write and direct Jacob?
I would have to say the cast. Over the past couple of years I have been acting in numerous projects...
