The 1967 revision of the "Star Trek" writer's guide starts by asking the reader a simple question: "Can you find the major 'Star Trek' format error in the following 'teaser' from a story outline?"
"Star Trek" is a franchise that comes with many rules and dictums, many derived from its late creator, Gene Roddenberry. Other times they came from story editors and producers across the franchise's nearly-60-year history. And all of them are fiercely debated among fans in countless fanzines, convention halls, and chat boards, as well as on social media.
But rules are made to be broken, aren't they? Or, at the very least, broadly interpreted... like Starfleet's non-interference directive by some captains. And, to paraphrase Kirk, risk was "Star Trek's" business from day one. So let's look at 13 times when the makers of "Star Trek" took a risk and broke the mold.

The "Fast and Furious" series has never shied away from using CGI, mostly because its increasingly extravagant stunts can't all be done practically. Believe it or not, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker didn't actually drive a Lykan Hypersport out the 50th-floor window of a skyscraper in "Fast and Furious 7." And if you've seen the behind-the-scenes footage from the scene in "Fast X" where Jason Momoa's Dante blows up the armored truck carrying Diesel's Dom Toretto, you'll have seen plenty of blue screens all over the place.
But that doesn't mean everything in the "Fast" franchise is a digital fabrication. In fact, the series has used practical effects whenever possible, causing a hell of a lot of damage along the way. With "Fast X," director Louis Leterrier wanted things to be relatively grounded, especially after "F9" sent Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and Tyrese Gibson into space. This is why you'll...

The "Fast and Furious" franchise is many things: A ridiculous blockbuster franchise with spectacular stunts, a big-budget soap opera where death has no meaning and anyone can be resurrected, a high-octane adventure in which cars are extensions of the characters' bodies, and more. Above all else, this is a franchise about family -- or at least it's become one in recent years.
Every heist movie and every big spy franchise has a crew, a team that grows closer together as the story goes along. But none hold a candle to Dom Toretto and his crew. This is a team that has gone through hell and back. They have lost members only to see them return from the dead, and have become international terrorists, bank robbers, super spies, borderline superheroes, and even astronauts.
Throughout the ten films (and counting) in the main saga, we...

This post contains major spoilers for "Fast X."
The Fast Saga has always played loose with continuity. Perhaps more than any other modern franchise, "Fast & Furious" knows that continuity is not nearly as important as the rule of cool. Characters can come back from the dead at any time, events from the past are recontextualized on the regular to reveal new information only relevant now. Nothing is off limits, everything can change, and mistakes or irregularities don't matter as long as the now is cool and exciting.
In typical fashion for the franchise, "Fast X" brings back people we thought were dead — physically or metaphorically. Near the end of the movie, we see none other than Gal Gadot's Gisele, back from the dead, and apparently working for Cipher on her submarine. Then there's the actual credits scene, which arguably pulls off the biggest magic trick the franchise has...

Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard not only reunited all of the Next Generation crew, but also gave them a fitting sendoff for which fans have been waiting since the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. It wasn’t easy for anyone, including composer Stephen Barton.
Barton admits, however, that he painted himself, or composed himself rather, into a corner.
“We decided we were going to try to score all of it which meant writing seven hours of music,” Barton said during a panel for the CBS/Paramount+ series at Deadline’s Sound & Screen event. “I think about four hours in I was literally dead, absolutely. I was doing seven days weeks, 16-hour days, I hadn’t seen my family. It was absolutely brutal.”
Normally TV shows can reuse pre-existing tracks. Barton’s goal to compose an all-new score for Season 3 wore him down. He credits showrunner Terry Malalas with suggesting they...

It must really feel good to be Jason Momoa. Since his memorable turn as Khal Drogo in "Game of Thrones," Momoa has gone on to join the DC Universe as Aquaman, star in his own Apple+ TV series "See," and appear as the battle-tested warrior Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune." Momoa has certainly proven that he knows how to play the hero, and now he'll get a chance to play the villain in the upcoming blockbuster, "Fast X" opposite Vin Diesel. Momoa is keeping the theme of family going strong in the ongoing action franchise, playing Dante Reyes, the son of Hernan Reyes who died during the bank heist in "Fast Five."
The swagger that Dante shows in the "Fast X" trailers and footage up to this point mirrors Momoa's own charisma on and offscreen. The role seems tailor-made for the Hawaiian heartthrob, who is definitely injecting some...

The actors in the "Fast and Furious" franchise are big stars, sure, but the cars in the long-running saga aren't very far behind. They're characters all on their own. In advance of the upcoming "Fast X," I recently got a chance to visit a garage in Los Angeles to chat with Dennis McCarthy, longtime car supervisor for all the "Fast and Furious" films starting with "Tokyo Drift." He took us on a tour of a few of the featured cars and motorcycles in the upcoming sequel, and told us a few stories about the shoot and the franchise as a whole.
Dante's Harley
First up on the tour were the cars and bikes that we'll see in the first part of the film, which is set in Rome. We were shown the Harley Davidson Pan American, which is ridden by Dante (Jason Momoa) in the film. According to McCarthy,...

While Star Trek fans might be focusing most of their attention on some of the newer series – such as Discovery, or the upcoming Picard show heading to CBS All Access – a few of the older iterations are still being enjoyed to this day. In fact, a brand new Star Trek: Deep Space Nine documentary recently made its way theaters and it’s set to be released on Blu-Ray in a few short weeks.
Having been in development for quite some time, What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine hit the big screen in May, for a special, one-night event put on by Shout Studios and Fathom Events. The doc, which got funding thanks to a successful Indiegogo campaign, focused on the edgier series that aired throughout the 90s. While classic series such as The Next Generation – and new ones, including Discovery – might be soaking up all of the limelight, recently, longtime fans have turned their attention towards the black sheep of the family. Having been in development for a couple of years, a newly released Star Trek: Deep Space Nine documentary has provided an entirely new look at the show’s production.
Playing in theaters for a special, one-night-only event, What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine hit the big screen earlier this month, thanks to a partnership between Shout! Studios and Fathom Events. The doc, which was crowdfunded on Indiegogo a few years ago, focused on the dark and edgy series that aired throughout the 90s. Directed by Ira Steven Behr (DS9’s showrunner) and David Zappone (who’s worked on a handful of Star Trek docs), the film gave fans an...

I'm not a car guy, but I love the Fast and Furious movies. The franchise has obviously shifted into a globe-trotting adventure series over the years, but for those of you who still tune in for the races and the cars, this video is for you. Wired sat down with Dennis McCarthy, the man who built all of these cars throughout the movies, and got him to go through each one of them. From the movie that started it all, all the way to The Fate of the Furious, no hood is left unopened. Enjoy:...

If you’re as pumped up for director F. Gary Gray’s Fast 8 as much as I am, you’re gonna want to check out these two new featurettes for the film. The first is called “Zombie Cars” and it features horde of cars driving off of a parking structure and landing on a bunch of other cars on the street. J.D. Schwalm, Special Effects Supervisor on the film explains:
"We have seven cars falling from the parking structure, and each one of them is aiming at a motorcade here. We have to pull these cars at an exact speed, and we're doing that using the winch on the crane. Each car comes out in succession to land on the vehicles on the road here. Obviously, there's no one in them because they're about to be impaled by 3000-pound lawn darts."
The second video gives us a 15 minute tour...

McLarens and Ferraris and Lamborghinis. Oh, my! What makes the Fast & Furious franchise go? The cars, of course. And now fans of the high-powered series can travel through the coolest garage ever courtesy of Dennis McCarthy, the vehicle coordinator for Fast 8. The tour features everything from classic Chevys to the latest hot rods as well as roadsters, motorcycles and even a couple of speedboats. “We have approximately $17 million worth of vehicles in this warehouse,” McCarthy said. “So it’s some of the finest things on earth, right here - the ultimate toy house.” The video also features a couple of guest stars, as F&F regulars Michelle Rodriguez and Ludacris stop by to stare at some cars. The action flick, which is slated for an April 2017 release features Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Luda and Rodriguez. Also joining the race are Charlize Theron and Kurt Russell. The audio on the clip posted below isn’t great, but that hardly matters as it’s just about looking and drooling.

NBA star DeAndre Jordan recently toured the Batman exhibit and was treated to an up-close look at not only the new Batmobile that Ben Affleck will be driving in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice next year, but the costumes that DC’s holy Trinity will be donning.
Thankfully, he took the tour with a camera crew and has now posted a video of what he saw. Check it out below:
Several new things stick out here. As far as the costumes go, Wonder Woman’s suit has more color than we initially thought, while Batman’s is even more detailed than comic book fans expected. Not only does the Bat’s utility belt have dark yellow accents, but his gloves have steel-plated knuckles, which should help (slightly) when he engages in fisticuffs with the Man of Steel.

The sixth installment in Universal’s blockbuster car-racing franchise isn’t looking to win any Oscars, and that’s a good thing. Though it may lack high-caliber acting and a flawless plot, Fast & Furious 6 has more to offer movie watchers simply in search of a good time than any other action extravaganza this year.
For a series to still feel fresh, exciting and innovative six movies in is a rare thing indeed, but Fast & Furious 6 exists not only as an assurance that there’s plenty of fuel left in this franchise’s tank, but also as definitive proof that big-budget, high-octane, low-iq tentpoles can be an art form unto themselves. By preserving the series’ adrenaline-junkie heart and infusing it with some well-conceived action-adventure adornments, Fast & Furious 6 takes the series in a promising new direction while never neglecting the car-porn pleasures that put it on the map. It’s a total blast.
