Netflix on Sunday went “Hasan the record” with the launch of Patriot Act, a weekly political commentary series led by former Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj. Does the show have what it’ll take to succeed on the streaming service where Chelsea Handler, Michelle Wolf and Joel McHale all have failed?
In a crowded field that includes, but is certainly not limited to, Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee and two guys named Jimmy, it’s not easy to distinguish yourself from the pack. But Minhaj has chosen wisely not to mimic the format originated by any of the aforementioned hosts or their predecessors.

Just a day after the cable network hoped to silence criticism on its Ku Klux Klan-centric docuseries “Generation Kkk” by changing the title, the network has now canceled the show all together.
In a statement, the network said it scrapped the series (which had been renamed “Escaping the Kkk”) after discovering that participants on the show, including Klan members, were paid to participate by production company This Is Just A Test.
“A&E learned last night from the third-party producers who made the documentary that cash payments — which we currently understand to be nominal — were made in the field to some participants in order to facilitate access,” the network said on Saturday. “While we stand behind the intent of the series and the seriousness of the content, these payments are a direct violation of A&E’s policies and practices for a documentary. You’ve probably heard of the public policy debate regarding if we should privatize Social Security. Less well-known is the new front of liberal vs. conservative political battles: whether to monetize public education. In the documentary Starving the Beast, which premiered earlier this year at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, filmmaker Steve Mims examines this pressing question. The end result is somewhat sprawling and uneven, though the film offers a couple of interesting learning points along way.
Any parent with young kids has undoubtedly already fretted about the rising costs of college. Mature teenagers, too, may have worried about whether they will leave school with mountains of oppressive debt. Public schooling is a critical bulwark to allay some of these concerns and, as the film begins, it is under a concerted attack by certain interest groups. Like with other areas of public life in the United States,...

Thursday night marked the first Gop debate of the official election year, and although seven candidates took the stage, all eyes were on Donald Trump and Texas senator Ted Cruz as they duked it out ahead of next month's crucial Iowa caucus. I was going to start my recap of The Voice‘s Top 11 performance night by lamenting all of the unfortunate business that played out over its first 90 minutes: The silhouetted ballet dancer shaking out her hair (inside the moon!) and upstaging hapless Evan McKeel. The Gop undercard debate on Fox Business Tuesday delivered several memorable moments, ranging from former Pennsylvania Sen. Jindal Goes on Offense Jindal, languishing in low single digits in the polls, went on the attack several times against the other candidates. This may just be the best presidential-candidate announcement yet. In one of several videos already posted to Bobby Jindal's website that show the governor of Louisiana discussing his decision to seek the Republican nomination in 2016 with his family (a key discussion he had to have, he said, before revealing his intention to the rest of the world), Jindal's three adorable kids have their talking points all ready to roll. "Mommy and Daddy have been thinking and praying about this a lot," Jindal explains as his sons and daughter listen politely, presumably because they're nice kids in general and were specifically told to sit and listen politely while they're on camera (which is apparently up...

The film industry in Louisiana, home of the box office record breaker “Jurassic World,” is gearing up to take the state to court over a recent piece of legislature governor and presidential candidate Gov. Bobby Jindal signed into law last week, which put a $180 million cap on tax credits in the state. While there’s no limit as to how many credits can be issued, the total cannot exceed the current cap. “We’ve seen it in Michigan. We’ve seen it in North Carolina,” veteran camera operator Mike Kennedy told local Eyewitness News station Wwltv. “When they take it away, jobs go away.” While the fiscal benefits and job growth directly related to the in-state film industry has yet to be determined, the Louisiana Film Entertainment Association says films and TV shows translate to tourist dollars with as much as 14.5 percent of visitors making trips because of locations they...

Louisiana's governor Bobby Jindal has received heavy criticism this week for signing a "religious freedom" executive order to protect same-sex marriage opponents in his state. Louisiana is the #1 location for major motion pictures filmed in the U.S., according to a study released last year. Could Jindal's perceived anti-gay measure affect the success of the film industry in Louisiana? New Orleans native and Gold Circle Film's Scott Niemeyer doesn't think so. Niemeyer executive produced Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2 both of which were filmed in Baton Rouge. Niemeyer, along with many other people in Louisiana, sees Jindal's executive order as a flaccid
