“Meet the incredible icon-packed cast of Netflix’s The Prom,” wrote Murphy, who directs. “A group of true troopers who buckled up and finished shooting during Covid so we could give everybody an inspirational aspirational story that we all need right now. Christmas is right around the corner…”
The photo depicts the starry cast headed by Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman in costume as the characters from the film adaptation of the 2018 Broadway production. A premiere date hasn’t been set, but Murphy’s Instagram post suggests a holiday debut.

Broadway stars, celebrities and journalists are among those rebuking “Good Morning America” host Lara Spencer for laughing during a Thursday segment describing Prince George’s ballet classes.
“Lara, really?” asked Tony-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell in a video posted to Instagram Friday to address Spencer’s segment, during which she paused for laughter after announcing the prince was enrolled in ballet, then advised Prince William to “see how long that lasts.”
Mitchell continued, “Some of us take ballet. Some of us win Tony Awards ’cause we took ballet. Miss thing, it’s 2019. Get a life!”
Tony-nominated Tony Yazbeck tweeted, “Wait, @LaraSpencer said what about ballet? I missed it but I can’t wait to hear. Grrrrrr.”
TV personality Scott Nevins noted, “I don’t think Lara meant it maliciously, but casual homophobia and bullying are just as inexcusable. Shaming a boy for dancing is tired, and laughing at him...

It might be a bit much to say that Beth Leavel’s roster of Broadway credits – The Drowsy Chaperone, Elf, Young Frankenstein, among many others – has been leading inexorably to the show for which she’s again been Tony nominated, but neither could anyone doubt that the The Prom is anything but a big, fluffy corsage gifted at just the right moment, perfectly chosen. In a part literally written for her, Leavel plays Broadway diva Dee Dee Allen, a showstealer from way back.
By now, you probably know the story. A gang of Broadway veterans, looking for a little good press after a big flop, invade smalltown USA to speak out for a high school girl who has been banned from taking her girlfriend to the high school prom. Not even Santa Claus or gusty winds could compete. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade yesterday drew the kind of post-parade buzz usually reserved for balloon blunders or temperature woes. This year, Broadway stole the show, with the parade’s first-ever same-sex kiss capping a performance from The Prom, the charming musical from director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw. Based loosely on a real-life incident, The Prom follows a troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars of a certain age who swarm into a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom.
The musical’s big finale, bringing together the entire cast in song and dance, hits its high note when the girls (played by Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla) embrace and kiss, a bit of tenderness captured on live TV that immediately became a social media “Did you see that?” moment.

Alyssa Milano is pushing back against irritated conservatives complaining about the first-ever same-sex kiss at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday.
The actress and activist retweeted a post from For America — a group that describes itself as the “new champion of conservatism” on its website — saying millions of kids “had their innocence broken” after seeing two young actresses kiss during one of the parade’s musical numbers. Milano didn’t see it that way.
“My small children’s innocence was broken by active shooting drills in school,” Milano said atop her retweet. “Seeing two girls kissing just solidifies what they already innately know. Love is love.”

There was something worth braving the cold weather to see earlier today in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Josh Lamon, co-star of the Broadway musical The Prom, has tweeted about what he said was the first Lgbtq kiss during the processional parade. The lip lock took place between the show’s leads, Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabella McCalla. The smooch took place on live television, a nice break from the branded floats and lip syncing that dominates the venerable parade.

Though the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade is a yearly tradition, this year’s made history after broadcasting the parade's first Lgbtq kiss during a musical performance.
During the parade, the cast of the Broadway musical The Prom closed their number with female leads Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla sharing a kiss on live television, the first same-sex kiss ever shown in the parade’s history.
Cast member Josh Lamon took to Twitter to celebrate the monumental moment. "The first #Lgbtq kiss in the Parade’s history," he tweeted. "We here at @ThePromMusical have never ...

Your prom probably didn’t have a glorious gaggle of Broadway troupers and their trunk loads of self-regard and narcissism gumming things up for your rite of passage – more’s the pity – but in some ways I’d guess Broadway’s musical The Prom isn’t so unlike the one you lived through way back when. The build-up was more fun than the event, right?
Inspired by an actual event – and the inspired is apt – The Prom is the latest razzle-dazzle show-biz love fest from director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw, who applied the same glitz and show-biz glitter to Mean Girls, Aladdin and, more to the point here, Something Rotten!, that great mash-up of the Bard and Broadway. Comparisons won’t do The Prom much good – Something Rotten it isn’t, but it tries.

A new Broadway season is gearing up, and there are currently three productions of musicals (all new) set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast and creative types and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“King Kong” (previews begin October 5; opens November 8)
In this musical adaptation of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s classic 1933 film of the same name, an ambitious young actress and a maverick filmmaker voyage from the bustling streets of 1930s New York to an uncharted island to capture the greatest wonder the world has ever seen. At the center of this 21st-century reimagining: a 2,000-pound, 20-story gorilla, and the woman who risks everything to help him.
