‘You’re the Worst’ Boss on Season 4: Incremental Growth and Friends with Benefits

‘You’re the Worst’ Boss on Season 4: Incremental Growth and Friends with Benefits
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “It’s Been,” the Sept. 6 two-part premiere of “You’re The Worst.”

Fxx comedy “You’re The Worst” has returned with a two-part season premiere that saw its core characters separated. The first half-hour was focused on Jimmy (Chris Geere), who had run away (literally!) from his problems after realizing he wasn’t ready for longtime girlfriend Gretchen (Aya Cash) to become his “family.” The second half-hour focused on where the three month time jump found Gretchen, as well as her best friend Lindsay (Kether Donohue) and Jimmy’s best friend Edgar (Desmin Borges).

“It felt like we wanted to deal with the aftermath of the event, of the betrayal, but it felt like if you wanted to do that properly, you needed time to marinate,” showrunner Stephen Falk tells Variety. “If you did something so horrible, you would need time to run and hide from it

‘You’re The Worst’ Cast Previews Season 4: New Confidences, Curveballs, and Post-Proposal Fallout

‘You’re The Worst’ Cast Previews Season 4: New Confidences, Curveballs, and Post-Proposal Fallout
Fxx comedy “You’re The Worst” has broken traditional storytelling format before, namely in the fifth episode of its third season (“Twenty-Two”), where Edgar (Desmin Borges) took center stage and proved the show is truly an ensemble. But the fourth season premiere, “It’s Been,” will toss all rules out the window by dedicating its first half-hour of back-to-back episodes solely to Jimmy’s (Chris Geere) post-proposal journey.

“Stephen asked me to grow a beard, so I knew that A) there was going to be a time jump and B) Jimmy was going to run away,” Geere tells Variety. “And I thought, ‘Of course he’s going to run away!’ He’s not going to turn the car around and try to sort it out, is he? He’s going to take his own self-indulgent amount of time to realize that he needs to take responsibility for his actions.”

After proposing to long-time girlfriend Gretchen (Aya Cash) at

‘You’re the Worst’ Review: Season 4 Transcends Romantic-Comedies with an Invigorating New Beginning

‘You’re the Worst’ Review: Season 4 Transcends Romantic-Comedies with an Invigorating New Beginning
The end of “You’re the Worst” Season 3 was a reversal of the ending to so many rom-coms. On top of a mountain, Jimmy (Chris Geere) proposed to Gretchen (Aya Cash) with fireworks in the background and a personal twist to popping the question. (His proposal was themed around local murders — her favorite thing.) She said yes and they kissed.

Except the credits didn’t roll. The mood was sour, not celebratory, despite the two happy faces. Their kiss was in darkness, with just the dim light of Gretchen’s phone illuminating their faces. Under the pretense of getting her a hoodie from the car (to lay on during sex), Jimmy walked away from Gretchen as the fireworks began. Instead of celebrating under the brightly lit sky, he fled the scene, leaving his new fiance without a clue to his whereabouts or why he walked away from the bond he proposed.

That is what every normal, well-adjusted person does, right? No? In the exclusive trailer below, get a sneak peek at what's in store when Gretchen, Jimmy, Lindsay and Edgar (Desmin Borges) return for new...

Emmys 2017: Was the TV Academy on Autopilot When Nominating Comedies?

Emmys 2017: Was the TV Academy on Autopilot When Nominating Comedies?
At first glance, this year’s Emmy noms may seem like a boon for new programs. A whopping five freshman shows are nominated for best drama series, projecting a considerable sense of freshness. But when you cast the spotlight over to the comedy side, it’s difficult to shake a sense of stagnancy.

Granted, across the major categories (series, acting, directing, writing), more comedies were Emmy-nominated overall this year than dramas — 17 to 15. But FX’s “Atlanta” (best series, lead actor, directing and writing) and “Better Things” (lead actress) were the only two new comedies recognized on July 13.

It seems as if every year the same question lurks going into nominations: How much will voters revert to standbys in the face of the ongoing peak TV glut? Among other things, the presence of ABC’s “Modern Family” in the comedy series category suggests a level of autopilot may have kicked in. That
